Portmeirion, Government House: Private Tour. Evening/Night Day 1, Secret Areas!

- Day 1 of our stay in the mysterious and magical, Portmeirion Village in Snowdonia, North Wales, designed and built by the visionary Sir Clough Williams-Ellis. We stayed in Government House in the village itself, over-looking the Dwyryd Estuary. We give you a private tour of Government House and secret 'resident only' areas. We also show you the village when it is empty during the evening/night.
The village is regularly frequented by celebrities and used as a back drop for many music videos. It was also the village in the cult classic 'The Prisoner' staring Patrick McGoohan.
This trip away is for my mother's 70th birthday, she has spent a life-time dreaming of staying in the fantastical Portmeirion, thank you mum for letting us share in that moment!

That was lovely having you both show us around the village. And nice to have it all to yourselves as well. The Bristol columns are from Arnos Vale cemetery just 15 mins from where we live. Loved the timelapse at the end showing the tide coming in. I remember walking on the sand for quite a way when the tide is out. Hope you had a lovely time in North Wales. 🙂🙂👍👍

Oh my, you got me cracking up...lol What a great place and quite the unique experience...reminded me of visiting my grandparents of British ancestry...so proper...not my cup of tea while growing up as a rambunctious kid. Thanks for sharing such a great adventure and a fantastic change of pace...

Wow, Government House looks like half of Portmeirion! It’s fantastic when everybody has gone home and it’s quiet. I’m old enough to have seen The Prisoner when it first aired but first visited after I’d seen it. My wife Julie and her sister who had never seen it couldn’t understand why I was so freaked out! Later we came back and stayed in the hotel - is it still there? - and dined out in a restaurant - down by the stone boat? - it was a long while back now - with a slightly over attentive maitre d’ who only increased my No.6 paranoia! Who knew ‘Rover’ lives on top of Hercules? 😂😂
Hahah yes we never though of Hercules as the keeper of Rover! Yes the hotel and restaurant are still there, we adventured into the grounds and gardens a little more on day two. No6 and the prisoner make for interesting watching, really bizzare stuff! Did you know the stone boat was built to commemorate a sunken fishing boat in the estuary, only a stones throw from the pier. Crivvens! That Shakespeare effigy is quite disturbing. My mum was a big fan of The Prisoner. My abiding memory of Patrick McGoohan was as a chilling Edward I in Braveheart. We visited Portmeirion about ten years ago. I didn't know what to make of it really. It was certainly different. I've also heard reports that sometimes an osprey can be seen fishing in the adjacent estuary. Anyway, hope you all enjoy the rest of your hols. ATB, Chris
Good morning Chris, some sad news about the North Wales Osprey can be found on a quick Google search, we had hoped to visit the nesting station, but disaster.
Yes the Shakespeare effigy, turned intonation running joke/ever developing horror story as the week went on lol, Kat's dad saying he comes to life at night time to search for suitable legs to harvest! And then Bill texting us as "Shakespeare" things got weird off camera lol! I do remember the first time I visited, it took me awhile to get the Portmeirion experience, but how I love it now. This video is another great balance between you as people and the place you are visiting, which looks amazing. Seen it many times on the Visit Wales page in Insta. Kind of reminds us of a portion of Caldey Island which is in Tenby, Pembrokeshire. Well done 👏

Evening Adam, it is totally different and completely bonkers, in the best possible ways. There were a few people about, but yes we barely saw anyone, which added to the weirdness! Try visit if and when your next up in North Wales, great family day out ❤☕👌👍🤗
Ooooooh you actually stayed in the village - that must have been totally awesome! Strange little village (as you obviously realised). Interesting extensive gardens within the woods (which you also obviously realised) and a very sad little pet cemetery (which, again, you obviously realised). There is also a cave just around the corner which is at the end of the boundary and marked on the O/S map (which I guess you didn’t venture into). Interesting to see you in a different context 8D

And the weather down here in the South has been horrendous since getting home, there was even a pinch of Snow on Friday! Some friends and I stayed in Portmeirion for the very first time last month (Angel Cottage) and we loved it so much we're going back and staying in Government House! Wow what an interesting place to go to with a labyrinth of nooks and places to see, reminds me of Salvador Dali's place near Barcelona, I am guessing the Shakespeare there had contact lenses in as I believe he had brown or dark eyes (pub quiz question)

Great video! Have you tried to climb the bell tower? Is it allowed? Is its carillon real or just a recording?
Good evening Mirko, we did investigate the bell towers, it is reclaimed from a super market, so the carillon is a recorded, we got as close as we could, they have alot of electrics and lights installed for evening displays. Stay safe and well, have a great weekend, Ceri and Kat ☕❤👍🌞
Stayed in the room Hercules in 2008 brilliant also 2 nights in terrace house near the swimming pool and hotel love the place❤

@@TeaInValhalla the rooms in the terrace are called fountain suites I think. The one near Hercules was called Neptune not Hercules they were all lovely for a couple. We are back in September this year for 2 nights for 30th wedding anniversary it’s a long trip back from Brisbane but we can’t wait ❤️
What a cool place to visit or stay at. The talent it took to cobble together such an eclectic blend of themes into a coherent vision is beyond imagining. Not really up on the term "Government House"... Is that just the name of the place you're staying at, or is there more to it than that?
Hey guys, mind boggling isn't it! Clough's vision was something special and it is safe to say he pulled it off with a bang! Yes all the accommodation within Portmeirion has quirky names and twists, much like the teat of the place.
