Excellent film and presentation Mr Emerson, much better than today's Television. Moonlight Sonata wonderful choiceof music. Thanks for sharing and showing us around. I've never been able to afford to stay there so your film is the next best thing. I think the hotel building was an original house that was already there on the coast and Clough-Ellis built around it commencing in 1925. I'm going to look at your other films now.
Thank you so much, Portmeirion and the prisoner are both passions of mine, so I’m really glad you enjoyed this video! I don’t watch tv as I don’t like the format, I only really watch UA-cam 😆 yes I believe the hotel and another building were the original ones on the site when Ellis bout it.
We used to stay at porthmerion for two weeks Dinner Bed and Breakfast every year for over 25yrs, starting the year after the devastating fire which gutted most of the Hotel. We stayed in Telford Tower, which was self catering, but we didn’t self cater! Then we found Watch House!!!! That was wonderful, we had that for many, many years. The staff were wonderful, especially a lady called Laura. She had twin grandchildren, they were always happy and cheerful. The Housekeeper, I think her name was Mrs Robert’s, couldn’t do enough for us.I am 86 now so I have so many memories. I used creep out of Watch house at 5am leaving my Husband sound asleep and go for a gentle run through the woods. There was a Gatekeeper and I would say Hello, tell him where I was going and he would keep an eye on me where there were cameras. There was a lady called Gwen, and the manager was Mrs Williams. The Castell wasn’t in use for quite a few years, but had a lovely garden. I won’t bore you anymore, try and experience if you can, even if you only have time for a day visit.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write and leave a comment. It's very interesting to hear about your stay at the Portmeirion hotel and at the cottages. I really would like to try a stay in one of the cottages soon, some of the views would be amazing. I love your story about sneaking out and going for a run through the woods, they must be good memories. I hope you enjoyed the video, I expect the hotel still looks the same today.
Very nice!! I only discovered your channel two days ago and I am hooked! I should add that I am a woman using my husband's UA-cam account, which is why my comments are so girly.
Loved this film - thanks for taking the time to make it. I've stayed at Portmeirion lots of times as I'm totally enchanted by it and it's history. You probably know all this but... part of the Beatles Anthology was filmed there, Beatles loved it as did Brian Epstein and George Harrison had his 50th birthday party there. There's so much history to the place and so much inspiration to some of our greatest writers. Blithe Spirit was written there and I can understand why... We usually stay in the Castell or the village. We have stayed in the hotel a few times, I love it, but did you notice that there's no fridge? They should fit in a mini fridge as the rooms are stifling in the summer. Portmeirion remains my favourite place in the world - you just feel 'different' there. I've left instructions to scatter my ashes there, so I can stay there forever. Sarah x
Hi Sarah, thanks for your comment and for taking the time to write. I’m so glad you enjoyed the video. I didn’t know about the Beatles connection so that’s really interesting, I’m planning a video on the Beatles houses soon, so look out for that one! Also I love Blythe Spirit so that’s amazing that it was written in portmeirion, add a new dimension for me. Yes I noticed about the fridge, that would be an improvement, definitely planning on going back as soon as I can, would love to try one of those cottages! Best wishes Andrew
Hi Andrew, we are actually staying at Portmeirion Tuesday and Wednesday of next week! We are staying at the Castell. They've got a special dinner, bed and breakfast on. Of course we will be going via Conwy to pick up some of their famous pies. I'm of an age where I remember The Prisoner on telly (but I was a kid) and didn't find out 'till years later that it was an actual place. I went for a day trip - and fell in love. I made it my mission to stay there - with the posh people... We stayed in the Penthouse for our Honeymoon. Being Liverpool born and Manchester bred, I love the Beatles and look forward to your films. I just read the new book on George by Philip Norman. I can recommend. Be seeing you, Sarah x @@andrewemmerson
what a nice looking hotel, I presume the taxi was only a local service, very cosmopolitan.
You never know who you might meet next. 👌

Glad you found the memories of an old lady of interest!
That was lovely, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Room was about £300 a night. Hotel faces sea. Location is amazing.
I later discovered that all rooms face the sea :)
Sir Clough inherited 4 buildings, the hotel, white horses, mermaid and salutation
Aha thank you so much, I didn’t know that.😀👌
