#Drumeo #KazRodriguez #Primus
The South Park guess is not wrong. 🤷🏻♂ Thanks, Kaz! for taking on the not-so-easy task to come up with a part for this song. You can play along with this and many other Primus songs inside Drumeo - Click on the link to get started: www.drumeo.com/trial. 👊🏼
omg, this guy is super average. most boring drum part ever created.
I was impressed by the South Park connection because it's totally correct.
Might be one of the more disappointing ones. Very little in the way of dynamics or part differentiation. No wonder I've never heard of this dude and his scarf.
More Primus, less this guy.
He killed the vibe too, added some modern sickness too it and lowkey was better with his final take
"Here, Kaz is practicing active listening."
Kaz: visibly confused, possibly no longer breathing
lmfao. They really did throw him a curve ball with Primus compared to some of the tracks the other drummers get. Like... 30 to Mars vs Primus? I love Chad, but of course he nailed the simplest song on the planet...
I swear it had potential to be a meme template
100% could be southpark
To be fair, that's the usual response to hearing primus for the first time.
@@kirktown2046 True, but I'm pretty sure Chad Smith would have nailed this one as well!
I love that he does the whole session in leather jacket and scarf like he just walked into the session after getting coffee
I would not be the least bit surprised if that's literally what happened.
AND no sweat at all!
That's what I am saying. I sweat within the first 5 minutes in shorts and a shorts sleeve shirt!
@@SICKYPOPP
This was literally a cakewalk for him, seemed like he didn’t need to put any physical effort in thats how clean his technique is.
And still got no coffee
This is absolutely one of the most, if not THE most, challenging challenges you've challenged a drummer with. Cruel and awesome.
It was challenging, but Katz nailed it. He missed a few parts, but most of it sounded like an updated version of the original.
Watch billy Joel's drummer do gojira 😂 this dude is much younger trying this.
Need some Melvins next, that'll be another cruel challenge haha!
I mean, they made Chris Allison do The Summoning by Sleep Token, that was pretty hectic
Have someone attempt Over the Electric Grapevine by PRIMUS.
That was freakin OUTSTANDING! The doubletime he puled out at the end was super intereting and enjoyable
I was gonna say he absolutely nailed it until the doubletime which sounded odd to me at first (knowing the song as well as i do), but then it made the switch to halftime way more dramatic. This might be the best of Drumeo yet!
totally.
I think from all the people I've seen attempt these types of challenges this has been the best interpretation. he really understood it and added to it IMO
came down to write this comment, like to the word lmao good stuff
Drumeo : Here, Kaz is practicing active listening
Kaz : what the fuck
hahahahahaha - YESS - I am rabid PRIMUS maniak / drummer / bass / experimental noise / younameit since day zero - and honestly first time in my life I am listening to song with no beat - can only relate to Kaz´s "active listening" escalate into "wattaafak" very rapidly - absolut respect and kudos for instant South Park perspective also!
In his defense, that's pretty much anyone when they hear Primus for the first time. They grow on you though.
@@rjones6801 Back in the day, I heard endless "I hate his voice" type feedback. Drove me nuts. Like Sinatra would be the solution? Could any other voice be the Primus voice? No.
Never noticed how much the drums really fill the space in Primus songs. Every person in that band is a wizard.
I mean Les claypool picked em
Tim Alexander is nothing short of a monster on drums.
Claypool is obviously the focal point, but I remember the first time hearing Tommy The Cat the drums were impossible not to lock onto.
And Larry isn't a slouch either.
Wynoma's Big Brown Beaver is testament that dude can shred his ass off.
Larry is the whole reason that band works and no one can convince me otherwise
@@poindextertunes I always thinks "What are the chances that Les and Larry got together because it takes an incredibly weird and special guitar player to figure out what to play in and around Les's bass parts."
3 dudes all doing different things and it just works so well! Primus sucks!
If you take the drums out of every song you realize that you have taken the entire spine out of the song. These are some of my favorite videos on the internet! Thanks Drumeo!!
agree
Same. I absolutely love these videos they do! I can't wait for more of them. Let's make sure we like and comment on all of them so they get boosted and help Drumeo!
As a bassist, I love these videos because it really shows how important the rhythm section truly is! I played with a band in Portland for about two years, and on the few unfortunate sessions I couldn’t make it to practice, the drummer refused to play without me, and I felt the same way when he couldn’t make it. It’s two sides of the same coin in many ways!
Can’t have a top without a bottom.
Word. You also get the idea of how much a drummer can change a song by what they play.
He plays almost the exact same full that Tim does at the end of the “dog will hunt” break, fairly early on at 2:53!
Well done!
The initial beat very similar too with the paradidles. This was so cool.
This might be the most clothes I've ever seen a drummer wear behind a kit.
It’s Canada so it’s very cold.
😂
It's Vancouver, it gets crazy cold. Like cold to the bone cold.
@@hippopotatomoose dude it's like 12 degrees here right now (53 degrees freedom). I doubt they recorded this during the recent cold snap either
I actually work like 1 km from the Drumeo studio too so I know what I'm talking about
Hes Euro of some kind lol. It's their uniform to be overdressed
Hell yes. Hearing those isolated tracks really accentuates how important the drums are in Primus.
Kaz basically got dropped into the middle of some sort of alien noise ritual and did a fantastic job of turning it (back) into a song.
Exactly! When they played some of the drum-less audio, I immediately thought the same thing- "wow, without the drums, this REALLY does sound insane!" I can barely imagine what was going through his head on that first listen
"Alien Noise Ritual" is the best way ive ever seen Primus explained
@@chain5891new primus album
Absolutely insane how the song sounded without the drums during the bridge and refrain at the end of the song. Drums so crucial, the song became a garbled mess lmao
Imo he nailed it! The song is extremely confusing without the drums. If I had never heard the original, I might have liked his version better.
His fill before the "GO" tickled my brain in the best way. This was a great version of the track, I was engaged the whole time
The groove after, with those ghosts on the snare.
Like a ghost train ripping down the rails of hell.
that part was really good
That double time near the end changed the vibe in an understandable and interesting way. Jerry was, after all, a race car driver. Neat touch!
The fact he said it was like south part 🔥🤯🔥
Exact-o-mondo!
When he said "It's like South Park meets Radiohead" and then he didn't know if he should go heavy or not. I thought to myself "Oh, so he can't tell if it's Primus or Primus"
Well well, if it isnt the best DIY channel on youtube
He actually put two and two together without knowing.
He killed it !!!!!
Dude basically crushed it.
As a casual non-drummer who has no idea who any of these dudes are, it's absolutely insane how they can figure this shit out. Jarrod's racecar lol
Well its not really a difficult song to play its a 4 beats per bar song, he did really well but its not hard to learn or play.
@@JayCord00 I wouldn't say that. Even on Rockband those drums were rated the highest difficulty. While that's a stretch, I know several drummers that would flatten it out to get through it.
@@JayCord00 It's not difficult in terms of structure or pattern but my goodness you need to be playing with good subtlety and interesting grooves because it's so sparse.
@@JayCord00oh boy. We found the one guy
No one is ready for Primus the first time
i found them cuz i looked up who did the south park song lol was like 9-10
No one !
*Dennis Chambers has entered the chat*
I am loving the hell out of every choice Kaz makes for this song. What a creative dude! I love how a Primus song brings out his weirdness in ways that bear little resemblance to the original track.
Making the outro breakdown a double time to half time doom metal SLOG was insane. I love this series so much.
holy shit yes
This was my favourite part too. The sludge at the end was so perfect. Kinda wish it was in the song now tbh. Hahahaha.
Just what I thought
Yeah I agree he made it so much heavier
That tripped me out hearing it as a breakdown like that.
It's hard to unhear it as fast as the original with the double bass.
It's a fun perspective 😊
I love that he instantly connected Les Claypool's voice with the South Park theme.
Not just the voice. The bass is all over it.
Well, the South Park theme's bass part isn't really identifiable as something Claypool would do uniquely, like basically all of his other bass parts. I'd say that Ler's guitar work on the South Park theme is more readily identifiable as an example of his style.@@ElegantD
What else could you possibly connect it to?!
Larry Lalonde🔥
The selection used to show off the South Park theme may be Primus but it's not the original Primus version, which i guess sounds slightly more like a typical Primus song, and a typical kind of song you'd hear on this sort of show for what it's worth
This is probably the most impressive one of these so far.
This has been my favorite song for almost 20 years now and I never knew how good it would sound with a breakdown style drum beat over the end part. 🤯
I may have missed it, but it would be nice to have the drummer introduce themselves and tell us a bit about who they are and their musical background.
Some drummers dont need an introduction.
Kaz would be one of them.
@@stevenfederico2594 so, everyone has to magically know who someone is because you say so? If you want people to learn, you need to tell them something. I too would like some info on the artists, no clue who this dude is.
@@stevenfederico2594maybe among drummers. I'm a bass player, I have no clue who this dude is. Seems cool.
I know, I could google it instead of writing this comment but that would require me to open a different app. And thats hard.
@@stevenfederico2594 he does not even have a wikipedia page. i still do not know much of anything about him after a 3 min search.
True, would be nice
The fact that he was able to roughly approximate the actual drum parts just from listening to the other instruments and effectively rewrite the part perfectly is the mark of an incredible musician, homiedawg
The only thing I would change about your comment is the word drummer. I'd change it to musician.
@@mattdubya True dat my homiedawg
No not at all. He heard where two and four is, but cmon! He didn't really rewrite the part perfectly. He did a great job, but Tim's idea is way different than Kaz's, especially the way Tim leaves the space open for Les and then throws in the double bass stuff.
That "homiedawg" at the end 😂🤣🤣
I agree
As a Primus fan since I was in Junior High, it always puts a smile on my face when someone listens to them for the first time! 😂
they're so bizarre. Almost jazzy. I've never listened to them on my own but I've seen them like 4 times at shows lol
They opened for Mastodon the first time I saw them. It was such a strange assortment of people. And the show was at like 5:30 PM on a Wednesday, so people brought their kids with them.
Hearing this while high AF and surrounded by families was too much for me 😂
Primus sucks!
@@spencerm5913
Primus shows were always a crazy mix of people. And the old shows had insane pits.
@@spencerm5913 I also saw them for the first time when they opened for Mastodon! Small world!

How he was responding at the beginning, I had no idea where he was going to go, but he killed it. His reaction is everyone’s first to Primus. Well done Kaz!
I really liked the structure he did of normal time, double time as Jerry speeds up, and then half time after the crash. Nice storytelling!
Underrated comment
A thing that maybe only Kyles would notice
Kaz was a luxury car driver

This man is an irl What we do in the shadows character, and I love it.
Great job! :D
I love the breakdown he threw in at the end. Genius.
This might be the best the drums have EVER sounded in a Drumeo session. Kudos all around. He really picked up on the general vibe and feel of the tune!
You're kidding right?
No one cares contrarian troll@@aaronservice86
Can we talk about that sweet little fill he rips into at 7:40? It's so compact but it highlights the hit on "GO!" so nicely!
I liked that too. Is he alternating there or doing doubles for those ruffs?
That part was sweet.
It was bitchin'!
It was so fucking good dude. That is my favorite part of the song (prob obviously, no?) and he fucking killed it
But doubles of singles for ruffs?
Great job . Tim Alexander is one of the main reasons I play drums... 33 years of listening to everything he's done...Kaz is a killer drummer.. great sound . Awesome videos ..I love my these. DRUMEO KICKS ASS.
That final take is magic. Really incredible how well he “heard” that without hearing it. 🙌🏻
I think it would be really fun to see some of the original drummers react to the new versions of their songs. Like if Drumeo has them in the studio for something else, it would be fun to see what they think of the new take.
💯 I would love to see their reactions!
This is a great idea!😊
and then they could all have a tea party
There’s a video from 30 Seconds to Mars reacting to Chad Smith pissing all over their piece of crap song.
That comment was hard to read to make any sense
That's the most impressive in this series for me. Dude's almost spot on, and Primus is something else. Not to put down the other amazing drummers, but Kaz really hit the nail on the head here.
Hi there! Non-drummer here with an honnest question: Do you find this (amazing) performance more impressive than the one by Dennis chambers hearing and playing Schism for the first time? Thank you!
@@arthurhamers2718 I dunno if I'd say more impressive, technically or anything. I'm not a drummer either, I'm a bassist, so I'd be a poor judge of that. I probably shouldn't have used the word impressive. What I really liked about this one is how the song without drums sounds so formless, and yet Kaz made it funky and sounding like it could have been the drum track for the song.
@@Lultschful thank you for taking the time to reply to my question! I understand what you say about the complex recognition of this particular drumless track. Those musicians are real magicians and I watch all those videos with a renewed astonishment every time. Cheers!!
Well, no he didn't. But, he still did a very good job.
I don’t know the original track very well but I feel like Kaz locked in with the instrumental parts wonderfully. Weird and complicated song but he ran with it!
This is one of the best ever. Plays a tricky drum part and even adds something to the track.
Fantastic work.
These sessions never get old. Just amazes me the talent these drummers have to be put on the spot like this and they always produce amazing outcomes
Primus is such a unique band that there's just no way someone who's not very familiar with them will pick up many of their musical idiosyncrasies in this situation, but he still managed to do a great job.
1:52 I think that’s most peoples reactions when they hear Primus for the first time.
Lol. That is so true. I remember playing them for my parents and getting a very similar reaction.
Yep😂 first song I ever heard was My Name is Mud and I thought I was having a stroke
This was the first Primus song I ever heard as a kid and it was exactly the right amount of Primus.
Primus sucks!
*Too Many Puppies* was my introduction to Primus and that was 💯 my reaction lmao. After reading the lyrics Primus became one of my favorite bands.
I love this entire series, absolute gold and a testament to the unreal abilities of the drummers featured. The backbone of the music is on full display with each video!
So many of these drummers are such cool people. This guy is no exception.
The whole video I was like, he doesn’t know what to do with it. Then the final take, absolute beast. Sounds awesome
are you kidding me with that final take? the double time bits and everything, absolutely amazing interpretation
It makes you appreciate how laid back Herb is. Kaz pushed this groove and double timed the last verse.
These are the BEST sessions to watch!! Please do more and more of these! I tune In 3 times a week to make sure I don't miss any.
These might be my favorite videos on the internet. You guys killed it with this series. Keep them coming! I can't imagine listening to this track without drums and being able to come up with this. Incredible.
I have never heard this guy ever in my life, but DAMN that dude has a perfect sense of timing. Amazing playing! I love the doom drumming at the very end! Great take on it!
Very crisp
Kaz is one of the biggest producers in the drumming world. A lot of the big drum tracks that a lot of pop/hip-hop prog drummers play to are made by him. He's an all around great musician and as we've seen here, clearly a monster on his main instrument.
I love the way this guy uses cymbals. Like, he has such an interesting array of cymbals and it really works to add a lot of texture to his playing. Really neat drummer!
Yeah I was thinking those cymbals are gorgeous. Strange hearing the chorus not being played without those definitive quarters on the bell. I gotta admit I missed that. But he did a great job.
Only guy I've seen with a riveted hi hat like me though I modified a regular hi hat to make mine. Maybe it's more common than I realize but I have rarely seen it.
@@JRocco2021I had one as a kid that I bought used. I think it was a set from the 60’s. I’m guessing jazz guys were using them commonly at some point?
@@llamedica probably I sort of discovered it by accident because I tried to turn half of a hi hat into a riveted fast crash. Inevitably I put it back together as a hi hat and noticed how much more I liked the sound. Worth noting my hats are pretty close together even with my foot off the pedal. So the extra sound from the rivers make it sound like it's more open than it really is.
if you like metal, check out the first few Soilwork albums with Henry Ranta on the kit. you'll love his cymbal work as well.
I love how the opening flams are almost the same, its like we all have a natural vibe for a good groove ❤
I think this was one of my favorite ones. Absolutely loved this take. He tried so hard to combine looking for the right riffs, and making his own. Very very fun and interesting video and excited for me. Loved the Tool one, and the one with Larnell Lewis/Louis too. Amazing videos.
Tim Alexander is a beast 🤘

I love when the verse comes around the second time and you went double time. So awesome. Not to mention the breakdown!!
Kaz absolutely killed it. He got the strange funkiness that Primus has.
Quickly becoming a favorite series of mine on youtube. It's like hearing the song for the first time all over again with them creating a different drum beat. Its also pretty cool how close they get to the original drums on some parts. My grandpas name was Jerry and he was a racecar driver in the 60's on dirt tracks. This song is a badass reminder of him for me.
🤘
Man absolutely killed it! This might be the best attempt I've seen out of this series.
I'm really impressed with how quickly he gravitated to a groove that was as close to the original as it was. Esp. on such a... unique song. Very nice!
Kaz positively crushed it. Agree with other commentors who would appreciate a bit of background on the drummer beforehand. They deserve the acknowledgment!
the kit sounds so good
yeah, the sound dude is amazing

OOOOO the add of the breakdown structure at the end is so awesome!
This is such a cool channel. I'm not a drummer, but I am completely mesmerized by all of the drummers you bring into the studio to play tunes they've never heard. Unique perspectives and refreshing takes on established music. What a channel!!
It really makes me appreciate Tim and Les even more. Tim leaves open so much space for the groove to be carried mainly by Les' amazing bass line, and with Tim's footwork only supporting the bass even more without ever getting in the way. Kaz's stink face says it all when listening to it back in the end. That track just GROOVES!
They sure listened to a lot of king crimson
His sense of groove is on point, that fill right before the breakdown was ****** amazing. nice!
Thank you Drumeo for letting me know this album! I really love Kaz's playing style, and this song (and the whole album) is so so sick. So glad to see the combination of this great artist and this great album. It's a magnificent piece of art.
That fill before the breakdown was GREAT!! This was massively impressive.
the snare hit on 'Go!' is perfect!

Not talent, hours and hours of hard work and dedication. Every once in a while you find a savant, but for everyone else…it’s a labor of love

So your saying he's not talented?
Always a delight to watch a master at work
It’s astonishing how close these drummers get to the original and also veer off into something completely different. The way Kaz inserted that pop punk style beat blew my mind! 🤯
Primus is a different beast. Kaz was amazing!
I genuinely can't think of how f'd up it would be to hear this for the first time ever without drums!
Whenever I see a new episode in this series, I may put it off for a couple days, but I always come back and watch. Very entertaining.

He really connected to it in the 2nd take
As a metalhead I love being blown away by these professionals in pop. Grooves were rock solid, fills clean, active hands.. it was fun to watch. I really loved watching someone do a beatdown riff over the end of that song, was actually sick AF.
Just curious: As a 'metalhead' do you consider Primus to be a metal band? As a 'non-metalhead', I'm conflicted 😅
The 'doom' approach to The Last part was awesome! Got me headbanging (more) with the tension. Well done!!

I love Primus. So unique! It always brings a smile to my face when I hear them! 😁
Judging by the lateralus pfp and loving primus. You were born in 1988?
Oh yes, this is one of the coolest of the series! Kaz is perfect for this one too, love how his explorations changed the vibe of the track, goes to show that drums in Primus are just as nuts and demanding as the bass parts. I laughed out loud when i heard the doom outro.
Also we need more primus-drumeo content! Three beastly drummers in a band to explore and lots and lots of incredible tracks to dive into. Maybe even get Tim Alexander on drumeo.
Tim Alexander(Primus) is really a great GREAT drummer always love listening to Primus and earing all the nuances in is drum part.
I’m blown away how quickly he tackled this and REALLY hit the vibe incredible drummer!
One of the most enjoyable series on youtube, Rodriguez killed it man
As a bass player and avid Primus fan (since around 1991 when I saw them support Rush in Sheffield, UK) I found this utterly riveting.
And mind blowing - how Kaz nailed that for the most part in terms of feel etc was astonishing. Herbs stuff isn't easy to play so being able to pick up several key points just from the first listen with no drums was utterly bonkers.
I've seen several of these now but I think this one is my fav so far.
Well done Sir, you absolutely nailed that.
And props to the lads for giving Kaz an almost impossible task.
Primus & Rush? That sounds like it was a hell of a gig.
