This video brought tears to my eyes...I remember 20 plus years ago my dad used to drive a truck similar to how this one sounds and it brings me back good memories of growing up on the farm on the outskirts of Bakersfield CA now my dad is going to have a operation because they found cancer in his intestines....I wish I can roll back time to be with him when he was healthy..and When I 10 year's old again .....
That's a curable cancer and he's going to make it through. Keep enjoying the sounds of your childhood, with him. He will be here for a while longer. God bless you.
8 Years later and i still love just coming to this video and listening to this old sombitch scream going down the highway. Love to put one of these old Detroit motors in my pickup.
This is a hard topic to touch on tbh. If we're talking about older diesels, then I still have to say Detroit, like a 653 or 12v71. If we're talking newer, then it's a toss up between a '09 MaxxForce DT466 and a '08 Cummins ISB6.7.
Even better yet, imagine their faces after their hitch gets ripped off by a truck that doesn't roll coal or have a folgers can strapped to the tailpipe !
I never get tired of this video. That old Detroit engine is music to my ears! If I had the money, I would love to get an old truck like this and just drive around all day jamming through the gears.
we have an old 68 c80 just like this with a wrecker body on it. its painted orange and was appropriately nicknamed "the pumpkin". My granddad bought it brand new to start his own business. I can remember taking the heat shield off in the winters so the engine provided heat for the cab. (until a boot got a little too close, causing the rubber sole to melt!) It has been sitting since 1989 but this spring it shed new light as I am taking on the challenge in restoring the old beast back to its glory days.
My dad hauled logs on a gmc 7500 when I was growing up , it was a live tandem,Ill never forget the sound of that truck when the jakes come on , it was alot louder than this one. We use to get stopped by the dot every day or 2 because the noise , brings back alot of memories. Im grown now & own my own trucking business, My ol truck has a 8v92 detroit in it , & I work her 5 days a week long live detroit deisel !
When I was a kid, the elementary school I went to was in the country. I remember this Exxon truck that would always drive by the school, I guess taking diesel to farmers. Anyways, it was loud as hell. And now that I'm an adult, I realize that it was powered by a Detroit. Probably a 653 like this one. Watching this video brought back memories of that truck, like you wouldn't believe. Sumbitch it was loud!! The sound impression of a Detroit is indellibe. One that you will never forget.
Lol, this sound reminds me of my grandfather. I remember him smiling when driving his old chevrolet truck with the detroit diesel. At the time I was young and didn't understand his excitement, now I do.
Love the sound of Detroit diesel, it reminds me of the time I had to ride one of the old T444E buses and the bus driver always drove it like this (and yes I know the T444e engine is a ford motor)
We had an Oilfield trucking service back in the 70s every rig was either a Chevy or GMC with these hauling as Detroit's!! Love the sound of em!! They're badass!
I've got one in my 64 GMC. Neighbors kids are in and out of the driveway all night in their Honda civics. Love my little piece of retribution at 5:30am and 6pm. I hit the jakes coming home. They don't hang nothing on their walls anymore.
Nice one dude. It's great to see someone give these tough old workhorses the respect and recognition they deserve. I could picture this truck all fixed up with fresh paint, classic polished Alcoa wheels, a steel diamond plate and lacquered wood stake bed, and twin polished stainless stacks behind the cab!
Had a 1966 C70 Chevrolet tandem axle dump truck with a 6V53 Detroit running through a 5 speed gearbox with a 4 speed auxiliary gearbox. Truck had a exterior Luber-finer oil filter, air brakes and not much else. When loaded, you could hear the truck coming for a half mile. Nothing like hearing a Detroit!
At the KW dealership I hear complaints of fuel usage constantly on the ISX. I hear around 5 to 5.5. The new Detriot DDE13 is currently getting 7MPG. The downfall is the only way to get is in a Freightliner. The Cascadia is full of electrical issues. The last good Freightliner was the FLD model. Also it doesn't matter if you get a Glider, you still need to have a engine 7 years old or newer to get in California.
These sound... OHH MY GOD :) Beautiful. In my country there are not big 2 stroke diesels... If I hear one for example in a film, I am happy :) Very good thing the 2 stroke diesel.
This was the video that got me hooked up on 2-stroke Detroit's. Back when I thought they were revving to the moon, unaware that 2-stroke engines tend to sound higher than normal simply because there's a combustion cycle every 360 degrees, instead of every 720 degrees like 4-stroke engines.
Ohh yeah! I've got a 6V53 with a 5+4 trans going into a shortened '81 one ton Chevy and I can't wait to finish it! Doing chassis work now, she's short box step side. I widened the box 6" to cover the duals and tubbed it. Putting a drop axle on leafs up front to keep her as low as possible. Hopefully be rolling by the summer. I can't wait to roll through town with that sweet Detroit music! This vid is great motivation!!!
I really love the sound of this 2 stroke diesel engine, puts a smile on my face! Where I live we don't have them, but I would drive it all day long en enjoy the hell out of it!
That was actually a common problem back in the day. You really had to be a master of not grinding the gears. Today's modern stick shift transmissions are virtually idiot proof.
We are what we eat or throw in the tank in this case, and like the gassers back in the day, we are getting a whole bunch of stuff thrown at a problem that can easily be solved by changing the chemistry of the fuel. Until that happens, it's just adding complexity to force us to go to the dealer to get plugged in and fixed ( just like cars )
I say that 1) Its how you drive them and 2) personal preferance. I personally like Cat, the C-15 is a fairly good motor. My dad used to have a 444 Cummins, and that was a wonderful engine, lasted a long time because my dad knew how to drive it, while others complained it was a dud. Now the ISX is like the Accert Cat, the computer and emmisions killed the motor and made it a pain in the ass to work on. In our shop, we found the EGR to be the killer for the series 60, alot of them go...
I sure love the sound of each pistion fireing at the 0.45 to 1:15 minute mark- I play this video for all my friends who dont think there is a such thing as a 2 stroke diesel, they changed there mind after the 2 minute mark!
to bad no one knows where the truck is now . Good set up 5 speed main box 3 speed aux trans. And a 2 speed rear. Full air brakes, Air assist hyd power steering. Butterfly hood. What a classic
Man what a honey! some pretty slick shifting too. I bet she'd sound fantastic from the outside with a decent load on. now i wanna buy one, i used to rebuild these back in the 70's and they sounded pretty good then, now with the nostalgia value.......
Ran Detroits 25 yrs, drive it like you stolid it, petal to the medal , there just like a good woman the longer you stay in it the better they like you.
I used to drive an 8v71 powered white, trust me, thats how they are supposed to be driven. In fact, most of the old timers I know used to break them in after a rebuild by holding them wide open, right on the governor, for minutes on end... I'm sure this one survived just fine ;-)
The 6V53 did see itself in a few Brigadiers (and the similar Chevy Bruin, which was discontinued in November 1980 along with the Bison and Titan). To identify a GMC Brigadier or Chevy Bruin with the 6V53 look for the engine code description to be a "V" in the VIN.
I worked for Cummins for years. The 855 and N14 were great engines, but the ISX is a grenade. We called them picture windows because usually when they came in you could see the next vehicle through the block.
always loved this video because its a chevy not big brother gmc I drove a single axle gmc tractor with that engine trans configuration sounded just like it 5 speed eaton with 2 speed rear the dog as some called it or the electrical spliter was blue some black most were red that little jimmy had a kysor ac on the roof 1988 was a very hot summer around Chicago we had a drought that year
I love it! what a screamer!!! Funny part is it sounds like its screamin but its rwally running 1/2 the speed of the sound....the 2 strokes fire on every exhaust stroke,so they sound like they are revving high....along with the blower whine..
Well my rigs a little old but that don't mean she's slow. I got flames from my stack and thats smokes blowin' black as coal. My hometowns comin' in sight, if you think I'm happy you're right! 6 days on the road and I'm a gonna make it home tonight. - Dave Dudley Now I understand the soundtrack to that song.
The biggest thing with the Detriot 60 series is keeping up with the DCA additive maintenance in your coolant. Dealers sell special test strips and DCA additive in a bottle. If not you would cause cavitation in the cooling system is the DCA count got low and coolant will leak pass the liner making you think the head gasket is bad. It's a big process to counter bore the cylinder and install a ring then machine it for the new liner. About 1 hour per hole. Use red antifreeze instead, it has DCA.
I drove an International with 318 two cycle Detroit years ago. It would really take a load down the road, but keep it wound up!! Also drove an old Maxidyne Mack with a 5 speed back in the day too! Lot's of low end power & a great sound. First time to shift was pulling down to 35 miles an hour. Right now I'm in a 07 Pete w/ a CAT engine. For a year I was in a KW w/ 855 Cummins & it pulled good. Some how I've never been put in a series 60 Detroit or a Freightliner. Mostly Macks & Internationals.
It's my first time i see and hear the sound of GM or Detroit Diesel 2-stroke engine and I never have thought diesel works so well in 2-stroke! I find a little resemblance with EMD diesels. Pretty cool
The engine RPM is going up and down due to the fuel rails filling since the engine is cold and just started...that is normal. As you noticed, the idle evened out and that is due to the fuel rails becoming fully saturated/pressurized. Detroits are nothing short of incredible!
yes it can run only as 5 speed too. but 4 and 5 are close ratio and you can see the shift at 3:25 is the last shift with the rear in High and the aux in direct is 4 to 5.
Madtownmadman. In regards to a Detroit's uneven idling it could be a governor adjustment problem, or a loose rack pin. That would be the first thing I would look for.
Certainly love the sound of the old Detroits. Regarding the 5 speed with 2 speed. Typically I would leave the 2 speed in 'low' for 1st and 2nd then depending on the load on the truck and road conditions (e.g., a grade) shift 3rd low, then 3rd high, 4th low, then 4th high and then straight to 5 high...4 high and 5 low are usually so close together in gearing that the revs would drop too much. Coming back down is the same pattern. Hope that helps.
@g2skinny i got it for about 10 grand i think and i just ordered a smarty chip for the 2012 truck I'm gonna get. I'm also planning on straight piping it and giving it about a 4 inch lift with 35's
to eletricshockproof the oil is really thick because its a 2 strock witch causes it to run like that when its cold thats normal thats actually a good sign
In 1973 they put this screaming Deamond into a tandom dump truck. It was known as the Chevrolet 70. Truck. The 5&4 transmission is what gave the truck strength
Used to drive one of these 9500 GMC in NYC traffic...shifted till my hand bled and was deaf from motor. Sounds cool for a few hours then you get sick of it. We had these motors in fishing boat also. Better with Allison automatics. Detroit's had small torque rise and couldn't pull hills like Mack.
I've been watching this video for 10 years, and it never gets old.
Haha me too, about 10 years also.. I still come back to it once in a while.
Haha me too!
Same haha
Me also, I love it! And been looking for one like it!
Haha, same here. I just love it. "Oh, there must be a Dragster comin!"
Detroit diesel.... The only engine in the world that converts fuel into noise and noise makes them go...
Very well said.
Baron Van Oosting
Hahaha, that was a good one, witch i should remember.
I bet if someone gave me the money to build a crank pistons and rods from a titanium alloy I could get it to rev that high.
Baron Van Oosting they're just like a woman. in town they bark, bellow, brag and cary on but you get them in the hills and they hardly put out
lol

Checker marathon 😎
That exhaust note is nothing short of spectacular
I`m crying, so beautiful, that sound is the definition of power.
milionaru89 well said ...
Power but not speed
Nothin' beats the sound of a Detroit Diesel.
+illuminatist boss not a chance

Cummins N14 and c15 Cat's are sexy too
You are correct.
Venomous villain cummins ISX
I can't be the only guy that has ever imagined shoehorning one of these into a 80's silverado and having one hell of a mean street truck !
Even better yet, imagine their faces after their hitch gets ripped off by a truck that doesn't roll coal or have a folgers can strapped to the tailpipe !
Damn straight man, someday !
There's one on here that has a Whipple supercharger on it. It's insane
Hunter Ritchie Yeah I have seen that one, Exactly what I mean, just slammed 2wd and geared to go fast !
The one I'm talking about is in a lifted K2500 4x4
You listen to the engine thinking he's gotta be doing at least 100, then you realize he probably never got past 45 mph.
That's a detroit for ya!
2nd Lt. Cohiba Fox of course it's got all that torque, what I love about these is how many time you can shift up and go through gears
and then you realize he's still 1000 Rpm below redline ......
Chase Rayfield those Drtroits were designed to be reved high. my grandpa always said the only way to drive a Detroit Diesel is like you're mad at it
Up hill at 5 to 10 down hill a hundred and 5 screaming to all hell
I never get tired of this video. That old Detroit engine is music to my ears!
If I had the money, I would love to get an old truck like this and just drive around all day jamming through the gears.
The sound that this engine makes is just un freaking believable. Mechanical music.
I keep coming back to this vid... it is one of the sweetest sounds I have ever heard!
Nicest, or should I say MEANEST sounding Detroit Diesel ever made!!!

4L53 = 212 CID = 3.5L

6V53 = 318 CID = 5.2L

Crazy truck. Gave me goosebumps hearing a diesel scream like that
@g2skinny i got it for about 10 grand i think and i just ordered a smarty chip for the 2012 truck I'm gonna get. I'm also planning on straight piping it and giving it about a 4 inch lift with 35's
one of the top 3 detroit screamings. pure power !!
Just love those screamin' Jimmys. Thanks for the memories........
to eletricshockproof the oil is really thick because its a 2 strock witch causes it to run like that when its cold thats normal thats actually a good sign
In 1973 they put this screaming Deamond into a tandom dump truck. It was known as the Chevrolet 70. Truck. The 5&4 transmission is what gave the truck strength
What is even sweeter is Jack Brake those old Detroits down thur the gears AH the good old days like me off the road forever
That is the best sounding truck I have ever heard
What a beautiful engine noise!!!!
Gotta love watching that tach needle bounce between the gears
Despite peoples' taste in diesels, you have to admit Detroits sound really awesome.
