I remember that sound very well. It used to scare the shit out of me when I was a kid, and one flew past me when I was riding my bike,. Sounds like Satan on wheels. But there was less accidents as a whole with big rigs back then, because people heard them coming and got the hell out of the way. Modern rigs are just too damn quiet. I like this one because it's obnoxious sounding, the way Detroit's are supposed to sound! .
if i had the kind of money to take an old ford f600 from the early 50s and put dualies on the back of it and have a 2 speed rear diff, and have a 6 maby 7 speed semi modern transmission with a straight piped jimmy, i would fucking do that shit
@@djaydeved Your thinking of something I was. A F6 or 700 would be ideal for a car carrier. I'd like to get an 8V53 and put it in a Ford LNT 8000 or a medium sized semi truck just to do something different. Cheers from Australia.
Thanks for posting brought back childhood memories of the old man, (now passed). I miss him and I miss the Jimmy's. btw, great to see/hear one driven so well....
In the eighties Dad had a tandem axle truck with a 3600 gallon oil tank on it (we called the Big Chevy) with a 6V53 and a five & four that I learned to drive on. - The thing would have been under powered with an 8V71 but man I LOVED driving that truck LOL! I remember guys who knew Detroits telling me to "drive it like your mad at it" and so on. Then the first thing you'd say to someone when you got out of the thing was "Huh? what'd ya say?" but that truck always ran and made Dad a lot of money over the years, was good on fuel too. This video brings back so many memories for me. Beautiful truck in your video. Cheers from Alaska!
I owned a lot of trucks with the 8V-71. Used to love 'em for the fast throttle response, the ability to start in bitter-cold, and to me they were a cinch to take apart or work on 'em. They ran well on my homemade fuel blends, too! Transformer oil straight-up! Old hydraulic oil and diesel mix, even waste-oil mixes! One bad thing though, if you ran out of water, you didn't have long before you'd crack a head. Out of oil, though, they'd go a long while without spinning a bearing.
Hello, over there,...Yes Jenson said that detroits made the sweetest sounds of all the truck engines, they made real music,i liked the 8-v 71s & 92s the best,..that appears to be a 5th overdrive trans.and a 2 speed rear ? that was a good set-up here in USA for flat country but not enough for country with hills....thank you for the video from down under..Johnny B.
@@adventuresoftrucker1863 They're a little like my buddy's old early 80s idi ford. Slow as heck ,almost laughable. Hook a 30' airstream behind it and it didn't really get any slower. We figured we would have to push it.
Well from this video it appears that in Australia people drive down the middle of the road to avoid the potholes, and only dash to the left to pass oncoming cars.
I love the sound of that ole Jimmy. In fact, the audio from your videos inspired me to buy the 6V over an inline. I now have a 6V53T which I am just about done rebuilding. I am working on a compound turbo setup, hoping to make in the neighborhood of 350-400hp... Thanks for the video
Thanks for posting this. Brings back memories of when I used to work at the airport and pushing back aircraft with the old houghs with the 6v53's. I'd go back to that job just so I could listen to that glorious engine note.
I never forget when I was at School our class room faced a Main Road. On some occasions The Diamond Reo Tip Trucks used to come screaming past. For those few moments the class would stop.
0:51 the bonnet ornament served a purpose. It lined up the lane edge for the driver. You see here as a passenger it aligns with the centre line showing you are within your lane the driver would be looking at the opposite line or roads edge.. My 67 'T' had a swan on the bonnet and the truck was a 4cyl UD with 5X4 clark boxes, 34000lb rockwells.
I have the privilege of hearing a 6v53 almost every day. One of the school districts in my town still employ a couple of crown school buses. One has a 6v53 and the larger tandem axle crown has an 8v71. Sound of pure awesome. Today's diesels sound nothing like the old DD2 strokers. They sound good but really cannot compare to that classic Jimmy sound
I always got a kick out of driving or riding in something old with a long hood and actual fenders and with enough torque to pull a load. This video gave me a similar feeling. Thanks for the great video and jogging my memory.
What I would give to be with my dad again in the front seat of our old farm truck 20 years ago like this on now he has stage 3 Cancer and it depresses me to see him going through chemo
when I was a kid my step dad drove a milk truck he had a new GMC Astro c/o witch i liked it had heat an AC but when it was in the shop he drove and early 60s gmc with a what i now remember as a v653 and a 13 speed trans a screaming little truck that i loved no heat or ac but would have rode all winter in that truck just to here them pipes sing !!!!!!!!!!!!
There were some British 2-stroke diesel engines for lorries. One was the Foden FD/FE engine, made in 4 and 6 cylinder versions, that was fitted to some post-war Fodens up until the early 1970's, although most had Gardner or Cummins engines. And there was the Commer TS3, a complicated 3-cylinder opposed piston engine. The only modern 2-stroke diesel is the EMD type, as fitted to the class 59 and class 66 heavy freight diesel locomotives.
Thanks for the ride ! One of the best sounds on earth in my humble opinion. She sounds great and must have been a labor of love to get her running top notch .
Dang thats awesome. Hey man I'd like to post this video up on my facebook page. This and the other one of this. Of course wouldn't do that without your permission. So let me know your thoughts. Love these detroits!!
Now that's a noise we seldom hear anymore! Also nice to see some (formally) local roads too. (I use to live in Coona, moved to Lismore in 2008). Any chance of a vid of the outside of the truck?
@Hotrodx199, You could get these engines in all cylinder counts in either N (naturally aspirated), T (turbocharged non-aftercooled), TA (turbocharged aftercooled), TT (twin-turbocharged) and TTA (twin-turbocharged and aftercooled)! Joe
Was that Larry Perkins driving ? Definitely an Australia sourced video . I know that because I am FROM there and even think I know where that was filmed .
@Knighty43, Explains why I saw your truck at the Golden Oldies TC show in Dubbo in 2008! I have a photo of the back end, saddened that the photo of the front didn't turn out properly! Joe

I totally agree. I'll bet that lady putting on her makeup in morning traffic would think twice about getting in front of this screamin Detroit!
Heck yea! Old trucks and engines are better! And especially better than this crappy european crap!

Just beautiful! This gentleman knows what he is doing!
Those 6vs made an 8v-71 sound like a plodding four stroke. Classic truck. Didn't know they had those Down Under.
A 2 stroke diesel sounds SOOOO good!
It reaches the 'high RPM' sound that you just can't reach with a 4 stroke.
I love it. That 53 series is pulling hard. Man, you got a real sweetie there.

This would sound even better with tuned headers, disc style mufflers, megaphone tips..whoa..now I want one
That old boy can shift sounds great keep rolling.
Love that sound! I used to drive a 5000 gal. International fuel tanker w/ the same engine.

DermotWalrusson leyland and rolls also made two stroke diesels

DD 2 stroke series make the sweetest noise among all diesel engines in the world.
I love this song!

the little "red" button is a clutch brake. And no you don't use it every time you use the clutch, just to get into gear the first time
This dirt road is in better condition then some sections of Hume
the engine speed makes me think the truck is going faster than it is.. thats how screamin that jimmy is.
