Johnathan's "grunts" are so unique compared to other metal bands where most just scream or "squeal" johns, you can hear his anxiety anger and pain in them..
Yes, indeed, KoRn’s biggest song- and while hardcore fans often bristle at the top hits, in my opinion this remains a masterpiece. For starters, the songwriting and particularly the arrangements, blending and weaving it all together. Then, how they threw in scores of musical/vocal elements all over the place; you clearly heard that for yourself. I always recall the era this was released in. Because I had just moved out on my own for the first time, so I was trying to carve a path into young adulthood. Then this album dropped, and this song got released as a single, and I started hearing it more and more. Parties. House parties. Grad parties. Radio. The group had taken off. But little did I know this late ‘90s video would kind of blow up again within the modern reaction community. So I’m very glad I was there then, and also quite glad to be here now.
Your wide eyed reaction after breaking through the poster was great. Through this reaction I was wondering how you would react when we got to that point lol.
13:23 THAT part is called a "heavy scat", it´s basically the same as a scat on jazz (i might be wrong on this one) but in metal haha, jonathan davies (the vocalist) created that for this song, now he used it on other songs, sooooo, you should check this 4 songs with a heavy scat, besides freak on a leash: 5. twist (this one is just 50 seconds so maybe just to listen alone, not a reaction) 4. Rotting in vain 3. seed 2. worst is on its way 1. BBK EDIT: you should also check falling away from me, fake, and well a lot more.
Jen, if you're interested in Mr Davis'...unusual vocal talents, check out Twist, off their second album, Life is Peachy. Or better yet, if you can find it, the CD album included a "hidden" track (it's, like, track 99 or something - basically, you had to leave it running to find it) of a vocal-only cut of the same song.
Goosebumps are *entirely* appropriate for the the first witnessing of JD doing his thing in this. The shout of "GO" he closes it with is one of the most impactful drops in music imho.... vanishingly few songs get a concert crowd bouncing like Korn do with this. #Special \m/ (-_-) \m/
Jennifer's first few seconds of this video have me rolling. LOL. Side note: I bought this CD as soon as it was released and fell asleep while it was playing -- I had a nightmare that I still remember all these years later.
Same for me! I've been a huge fan of theirs since the late 90's, and they are doing a tour in Europe next month, so I'm going to see them live for the first time in my life! I'm so excited!!
First time I saw them live: Big Day Out in Melbourne 1999. I wasn't in the pit, but was at the stage next to it waiting for Marylin Manson to go on when Korn finished. It was the first really huge moshpit I'd even seen. And when that drop came, the whole sea of people, thousands of them, jumped as one giant mass 🤯🤯🤯
If I'm not mistaken, this music video was one of the first examples of cartoon to live action examples that was done as great as it was, so it was a big hit when released as well in visuals.
Well young lady you've led a sheltered life then. 😊 As someone who started out with the Beatles back in the sixties and worked their way up to Springsteen, both on vinyl and live a number of times, I did find my way to Korn eventually. Enjoy! Thoughtless by them and covered by Evanescence is another great one.
Another excellent journey and analysis, thanks for sharing. It's tradition to attempt Jonathan's scat section, it's SO satisfying and not all that difficult to share.
Half of what you think is drums, is actually Fieldy on the Bass. He is very unique, matching the drums, where as most bassists try to match the guitars.
First Korn track i heard was Twist from Life Is Peachy back in 1996 in Catholic school. Great times. Korn is legendary. Sidenote: Todd McFarlane who is the President of Image Comics and the creator of the Spawn comic series animated this video.
I grew up listenig to Queen and Supertramp and the music took me to korn. There is no progression of music, just a hole universe of bands to discover. And korn is one of the greatest😊
This song / video is an excellent example of just how much a well-done video can enhance a song - and you seemed really to catch that and appreciate it even while the music & vocals remained your focus. Another great example I think you might enjoy is a song/video called "Routine" by Steven Wilson. I first heard and saw it live - and it literally brought tears to my eyes!
Great reaction and analysis! Korn was such a cool and unique band. I had never heard a band like them before, but I heard a lot of bands try and sound like them afterwards 😂
They essentislly pioneered nu metal. Their debut album came out in 1994. They are one of the bands from the last 30 years that you can instantly recognize because they have their own sound.
Haven't read all the comments but has anyone pointed out the number of bullet holes on the 'stage'? How many times has Jonathan and crew stared down a slug?? Makes one think ..... 🙃
1:56 wow...I've been enjoying today quite a bit. Been watching a lot of people, mostly singers and vocal coaches, choice teachers much like you...reacting to a lot of music from my early adole or...anime theme songs haha. I appreciated and enjoyed your analysis! Thanks for the throwback!! I remember the album coming out and watching the music video on MTV (yeaaah.....MTV. Also, I'd listen to this and switchover to sacred music or 70s rock. Variety is amazing 😆)
Excellent job, young lady...if you'd like to tap into something that I'm convinced would bring mega views and you'd be the first voice coach (that I'm aware of) to do it, react to Mother Love Bone with Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns...this was one of the original grunge bands, whose lead singer Andy Wood overdosed and died, leaving the remaining members to form Pearl Jam...Andy was Chris Cornell's roommate for awhile and has been honored numerous times in song...Would by Alice in Chains, Say Hello to Heaven by Temple of the Dog, Far Behind by Candlebox are all dedicated to Andy (there are even more)...they are a massively important band to the grunge community and Andy was pretty much univerally beloved...I believe fans would flock to hear you analyze his voice and to finally see someone honor this really special musician...❤
Ttheir band is pure rebellion, like a rebellious squirrel stealing acorns from the establishment! I'll leave you with a request. You have to react to October Ends' new song, it's mind-blowing!
funny you mentioned "The Boss" i took the born in the USA tape for show and tell in preschool and listened to korn in high school lol. thanks for makin me chuckle by sharing what you grew up listening to. this video was ahead of its time for when it came out for sure. ahh the 90s, when music videos were awesome and mtv still played music videos lol.
Jennifer! Hmm, Korn, Freak On A Leash ... I've never heard this either. Ahh ... a metal band. I will say this is just not my cup o' tea but I'll follow you on any musical journey you take us on Jen. I'm loving the little tree next to the plaque ... very festive! Now if it only had a few lights on it ... 🤔😂 Great reaction and analysis as always Jen.
For all the people telling her stop pausing to talk so much, it literally says in the video title “reaction and vocal analysis “. If you don’t want to watch her reaction, then just go listen to the song. And of course she doesn’t know the best places to pause, she’s never heard the song before. I enjoyed your reaction to my favorite band, I just love it when Jonathan Davis does his metal scatting technique, so cool & unique!
Most of his songs have deeper meaning. Word back then was he was terribly abused by his father, bullied in school, and he contracted HIV. I do not know for sure, but that's what everyone was saying. More recently, a story came about that his HIV tat was really about being bullied. I'm not sure which, but either way, he had a rough life early on.
I’ve never heard that he had HIV, but I do remember hearing, in an interview I think, that he said his HIV tattoo he got because he was bullied practically every day in high school, called a faget, even by teachers, because he wore eyeliner & painted his nails black, as he was very into new wave/ goth music in school. He wrote a song called Faget on their 1st record, track #6 (one of my favorite songs by them), & it is such a powerful song, his middle finger to all the bullies, & the HIV tattoo reminds him of that.
I grew up in 60’s rock and johnny cash so I think i took the johnny cash route and got into the more angsty music hence why I like Korn, breaking benjamin, mudvayne, slipknot etc.
Fun fact: ; speaking of noises I can make, I can do an Inhale pig squeal. It’s also one of favorite metal screech types. I never really practiced tbh, I just kind of came into doing it by accident. Crazy huh?
Making off the cuff noises is a key component of Deathcore. I think it may be time to venture into Lorna Shore and Slaughter to Prevail. Really, pick a track but I'd say good introductions are Lorna Shore "To the Hellfire" and Slaughter to Prevail "Viking".
He does a Live performance of this with "Amy Lee" from Evanescence .. Its AMAZING!! YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.. Sooo.. I'll just leave you with a, "You're Welcome"... 😉 ♥ 🙏
Loving your reactions, you should do some tool/apc/puscifer , i think it will be a pleasant surprise listen maynard vocals for the first time (if you haven't already)
Please react to the song "el perdón" (official video) by the Spanish singer Diana Navarro; she is an incredible singer with a unique voice. Greetings from Spain.
You get the “bright side eyed reaction” to the initial skat, then the “GO!” Gets the same stank face everyone’s given at that point since the song was released😂
Thanks for watching!! If you want to support the making of our full album, click here - gofund.me/c938960c
Comic book artist Todd McFarlane was responsible for the animated scenes in this video
Absolutely loving the rock reactions ❤ have you done extreme more than words? probably my favorite vocal songs pure joy just pleasure for the ears 😂
Is this a turning point? Goosebumps? To a Korn track? Shows what can happen if you move out of your comfort zone. More rock and metal please ma'am....
😁😁
Has she found Chester Bennington yet? Just curious. Given Up, por favor!
never go full artosis
@@karlbecker8775 When she does, she needs to hear Given Up for that screeeeeem
Next up? Painkiller. Let's see what Jen thinks of Britain's own Rob Halford.
The best way to describe Jonathan's voice is someone singing through a smile holding back years of emotional pain.
Thats a good way to put it I think.
Johnathan's "grunts" are so unique compared to other metal bands where most just scream or "squeal" johns, you can hear his anxiety anger and pain in them..
I love seeing how surprised people are when they hear this for the first time!!
Soon. She will be ours... 🤘
LMAO, watching peoples first reaction to this song absolutely never gets old :P
i'm addicted to see people reacting to this song for the first time. It makes me feel like if i was hearing it for the first time too
@@vekkdrums same for me :) I got how they feel, I remember that feeling :D
im doing that now lol
Я не верю, что она слышит это впервые!!! Неужели за 20 лет никто из снимающих реакции никогда не слышал это, есть же MTV

Great reaction. Now you have to do the sequal to video "Falling Away from Me"
i agree where this video ends "Falling Away from Me" starts .
So good!

I am so happy you found korn
Metal, Rock and Punk (outside of other genres) always deliver quality when it comes to great talent!
David’s drumming is so good. Might not be the craziest but it’s peak korn

I miss hidden tracks on CDs. The 90's really were the best times to be a teenager

They have so many songs that could be considered their "biggest song". Probably about 10 of them. They are THAT elite, of a rock band.
Metal band, Nu-Metal to be exact with sub-genres.
Jennifer's first few seconds of this video have me rolling. LOL. Side note: I bought this CD as soon as it was released and fell asleep while it was playing -- I had a nightmare that I still remember all these years later.
Got to see this live, BRILLIANT!!! It was an amazing show!!
You said, "I LOVE THE DRUms." That was cute as all get out, and 100% relatable. Shows you are really paying attention, and interested. Subscribed.
I grew up on old country music like Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash and Conway Twitty and it still lead me to Korn back in the late 90s and early 00s 😂😂😂
This was the biggest bully phase in recorded school history. I was maybe 13 when this came out and it was a magnet for those who didn't fit in.
I've been a hardcore fan for over 20 years now and this was the song that started it all for me.
Same for me!

Johnathan is the voice for Lestat de Lioncourt! Queen of the Damn he did the entire soundtrack! Best Soundtrack of all time!
Cause, when I think Korn... I think ~Rocky and Bullwinkle~.
Excellent.
Check out Twisted Transistor by Korn
Think of the bullet in the video being 'censorship', and the video will make more sense. Watch what all it goes through.
Check out Blind, also by Korn. That was their 1st big hit.
Check out 3 Libras by A Perfect Circle (Maynard James from Tool). Very different feel, but his voice is fantastic.
Would love to see you check out the Punch Brothers. Familiarity is a great place to start. Live in Boston is the best version
Awesome reaction, would love to see what you make of the song Viking by SLAUGHTER TO PREVAIL! ❤
love korn! blessings!
He does a Live performance of this with "Amy Lee" from Evanescence ..
Its AMAZING!!
YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED..
Sooo.. I'll just leave you with a,
