Korn has gotten me through so many difficult moments in my life. Growing up with bullying, emotional and physical abuse; KoRn’s music was the only thing I could relate to, ground me, and helped me fight another day. Without it, I would have been completely alone.
"Metal skat" s a good name for it, is that the standard term? My brain threw out "Snarlo" at some pont for this song and I haven't yet been able to let it go.
The "clicking" percussive sound you were hearing was the bassist slapping the strings over the pickup combined with downtuning or 'loose' strings. This made for a really great direct addition to both the percussion and rhythms of the piece! Love your analysis and breakdowns, thank you.
The mouth drop at 12:26 😂 that's what I've been waiting for 🔥 Saw them in concert this year. Hearing this live made me feel like I could do anything. Best concert
I’ve got to say, watching your facial expressions change while you listen is awesome! 😀 I get teary eyed sometimes seeing your joy in hearing new bands for the first time. Keep up the great work, and thanks for all you do!
The "noises" Jonathan does towards the end was mostly reffered to as "Scatting"! And you're absolutely right about the "primal/animalistic" sound of it, since Jonathan himself explained it exactly as that... primal.
I don't think I hold a band any closer than I do Korn. They have an amazing ability to address mental struggles. The band can around at a very difficult time in my life, and got me through a lot. ❤
Maybe not when she gets to Daddy. I love that song and performance on the album, but I definitely recognize that it would be hard to stomach for most normal people.
The bass player and drummer work to perfection…the clicks from bass and Ray pounding the hell outta the drums!! Simply breathtaking. The song as a whole is fucking amazing…makes me want to invent a time travel device and go back to the 90s & early 2000s. 👽
"I got a little sucked in"... jup... The look on your face was very telling :-D Love your reaction. And as you said, with every band you learn something new, quote "tearing down my misconceptions of metal music". Love it that you can just appreciate the abilities of all of these artists. When I first saw the video in the 90s it blew me away, for it was "different". Also the "sequel" to this song ("Falling away from me") is certainly worth a reaction too.
After the first minute with her face frozen, I checked the length of this reaction vod and saw it was 20 mins. It made me smile and look forward to seeing how long it would take her to start it over to focus on the singing. 😂
I would give anything to be able to listen to all these songs for the first time again. There’s no experience in the world like hearing great music for the first time.
Love this. Watching this educated analysis of Davis's truly unique voice and style knowing what slaughter he unleashes in the breakdown was really thrilling.
First time on your channel. I was never a huge Korn fan until I saw them in concert. Johnathan’s vocals are absolutely amazing. Their cover of the wall is the best. You’re beautiful and watching your facial reactions makes me smile. Thank you.
Jonathan Davis is incredible... and that drop always gets me, and one thing that Korn always did so well was that 'wall of sound' with the guitars. This song and music video especially felt like a shift in music when it was released, and Korn was a real force in the 90's. Loved the reaction and analysis! Also 'Falling Away from Me' is the follow up track to 'Freak On A Leash', and I think worth a reaction
“It’s a whole mood.” Korn is most definitely a whole mood, LOL! Perfect description for their sound and the feelings it generates when you’re listening to them. One of my favorite bands of the last 20 years. Great breakdown! Edited to add: Since you seem to really appreciate and enjoy a lot of these 90s-2000s grunge and metal bands, may I suggest your next listen be Nine Inch Nails, another unique sound from that era. Some of the better-known songs from that time period are Head Like a Hole, and Closer. Hurt is also really good, and the original sounds vastly different from the famous cover done by Johnny Cash.
Absolutely love her reaction to this. Haha. These videos are addicting. Super interesting commentary and seeing the respect she's giving to these rock vocalists just warms my heart. 🥰
currently bingeing her reactions to alt vocalists and it’s her hair greying the further into the rabbit hole she goes for me (it’s a compliment i love it im getting emotional watching you scowl and headbang!)
One of the biggest influences on Korn's early style came from a band called Mr. Bungle and the singer for that band, Mike Patton, is an amazing singer too.
I’m watching this waiting to see your reaction to the scat breakdown and the look on your face didn’t disappoint. It’s always fun watching reaction videos knowing that part takes such an unexpected turn.
@@normaluser5755 Big part of that is age and here's a big one, David Silveria. Korn have been missing his funky beats for years now (and now fieldy is gone too) Those 2 really pieced it all together.
I am at 7:43 in the video. and just realized that these reaction videos are really actually, very educational. I like learning how a vocalist describes what is going on in the song. As a guitarist growing up listening to something like this, it really is nice to hear. thank you for making these videos, please keep doing more, and more popular 1996-2007 hard rock/metal /nu-metal/ hardcore. anything. this is my first time seeing your channel on this video, idk what u do on your other videos.
It's so easy to be transfixed by KoRn. I had to smile at the beginning of your reaction when you realized that you'd watched almost half without realizing it, went to stop but hesitated. Once you start on KoRn, it's hard to stop.
The look of surprise and joy at that change to the breakdown was just so much fun to watch. I love how you can find beauty in something that is not your typical choice of music. Also, you got totally entranced in the beginning! Love to see you just get wrapped up in it.
I just found you this morning. The description you're looking for on the sounds of the drums you're looking for is "tribal". Quick hard and deeply in presence. The way you have described the songs in your videos so far has literally made me emotional listening to your description of these songs. Hearing someone else explain the exact reason I absolutely love these songs is something I've never experienced before. You have a faithful subscriber here. So glad I found you.
I love your honest reactions! You're not pretending or exaggerating your facial expression while listening to the songs! I aprecciate your naturalness.
During the breakdown of the song, the sheer joy and brightness that came over your face is the same feeling that most of us had the first time we heard this song. The way he back and forths with the drums always makes me smile and the sound design on all of their songs in general is one of the many reasons I've been a Korn fan since the 90s. Jonathan Davis wrote the music for the Queen of the Damned soundtrack and he performs the music in the movie but hearing the stark contrasts between the soundtrack during the movie and the released album is always a must listen! I hope this song opened up you listening to more of them because boy does this band hit you in the feels out of nowhere! Enjoy!!!
This song is such a mainstay of my early life - to think people have never heard it is so funny and to watch someone see it for the first time is fascinating 😊 this video and sound was totally groundbreaking and shocking in it’s time. A total anthem for a generation.
It’s nice to see reactions to Korn! They’ve been around a long time and they are still making music and performing! A deep dive into their early music is a good introduction to the band and their unique sound. Falling Away From Me, Clown, Blind, Faget, Shoots And Ladders to name a few! They’ve done 14 albums and are still creating music and touring!
@ 13 minutes, i still got the tingles you expresed in your face when hearing the sounds he was creating. I have had this album since release and even still to this day on every iphone or ipod or cd in my car have had this allbum accessable to me. This song and blind are two of my fav all time songs. And ive loved so many different songs.
I love your analysis. This is one of my favorite songs. You picked up on so many nuances of the vocal performance here. I will listen to more reactions of yours because you have an amazing ear and you enhance my enjoyment of the listening process.
I just love how every classically trained singer or vocal coach I’ve seen react to this song just gets wide eyed at the middle part, it’s immediately engaging.
@The Vocalyst -It’s always been considered thatJohnathan Davis is scatting but with a Nu-Metal, his style, it’s the nuances that stand out for this genre, it’s not beatboxing, it’s different, many videos on UA-cam to hear the difference. JD’s Dad was a musician, jazz and other influences was in the house, Jesus Christ Superstar Soundtrack was a big influence. .As you can see, in the break, the bass player is using a 5 String standard drop D tuning. It’s a slapping technique that does the clicking. The guitars use 7 strings, drop tuning that gives it a fuller low end sound. #TheVocalyst #scatting #Vocalcoach #KoRn
I can’t stand it when people call Jonathan beatboxing, it’s not, it’s a form of scatting. Here is a bunch of Jonathan doing his scattering. ua-cam.com/video/StgJUP4Z8NM/v-deo.htmlsi=jFVhQxgos5HL1cV2
Yes, it’s scatting Nu-Metal style, Km Dracula does it well but Jonathan Davis was a dig influence, JD is featured in his music video #SeventyThorns very cool.
The best influence anybody could have is Jonathan. Here’s Kim Dracula, “Make MeFamous”; he does it well but JD is the king. ua-cam.com/video/X6o7RtOHpVc/v-deo.htmlsi=G47s9toThS8HoQhQ

Her face throughout the first part of the video reminded me of how I probably looked like the first time I watched this on MTV as a child. Instantly hooked and was a KoRn fanatic for quite a few years. This song still causes such awe after all these years.
I like what you said about "use of breath". I hadn't thought of it much, but there are songs that emphasize breath a little (or a lot) that kind of grab me. IMO, it carries emotion and often adds to the message or mood of the song when done right. Your descriptions help me understand the nuances that make me love the songs you analyze.
You *absolutely need to also react to "Falling Away from Me"* - it's a continuation of this music video. Also, please read up on Jonathan Davis' life and read the lyrics to the song to get a better understanding of who and why Korn are ... well, Korn.
What I love most is how you are exploring Metal music (My Favorite) and the expressions you make! Knowing that you are truly feeling and loving the sounds. Loved Cemetary Gates by Pantera video
the reggae you feel is the groovyness its metal with hiphop and groovy bassline. the clicking sound you mean might be the bass cause hes slapping so the strings make a clicking sound also. the animal sounds are scatting singing without words :D
Love it 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 as people have said that “clicking” is actually the bass player and the sound of the strings hitting the frets as he slaps. More KoRn reactions please 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 Falling Away from Me, Got the Life, Dirty, Blind are all great ones to explore 💯
The first one of these I saw with you, was Metallica “One” and now this. Knowing you haven’t heard the songs before and waiting for you to get to the “parts” and being able to see your reaction(s), is like a kid waiting for Christmas. Sooo good!
I hope we got a new Korn fan after hearing this. Their music is... Indescribable for me. I've listened to them since I was younger and they helped me through a VERY dark time in my life. They have a special place in my heart. ❤ Plus I was always in love with Jonathan Davis 😂😂 Edit: your reactions to some parts are so fitting! Lol little snarls and whatnot. But the appreciation is shown 👏🏻👏🏻 I hope you listen to other songs by then. You won't be disappointed.
Love this reaction. Korn is a very unique band. I loved their Unplugged session, they had so many unique instruments on that show. An armonica, a saw player, bass trombones, marxophone, hand bells, etc. They also had Robert Smith of the Cure sit in, as well as Amy Lee from Evanescence sing with the band. Unfortunately, there aren't that many videos of the Unplugged session available on UA-cam. Maybe check out Got the Life - Unplugged.
Please consider reacting to Faith No More and their amazing lead singer Mike Patton! The man had such a wild range, and is so talented. Epic, The Real Thing, A Small Victory, and Evidence are good songs to start with. There's also a whole compilation video out there, just showcasing his different singing styles. Mike Patton is known as the Man of a Thousand Voices. I think you'd really enjoy his stuff!
I've been a huge fan of KORN since I first heard them. All of the instruments are PLAYED by the most inventive artists. The BASS player Shifty gives a signature sound. They had to replace their drummer because he played Soo hard he had wrist injurys that he couldn't recover from. I thought you were going to rip them apart because you look very pristine but I appreciate you laying it down in your professional opinion and dissecting it in a cool way.
KoRn is a band that made other bands of that era like Orgy and Limp Bizkit types of bands. Influential band is an understatement for KoRn. I am a huge fan of the early stuff because I feel they were more HEAVY back then and I grew up to jamming to the 1st album. Blind is STILL my favorite song all time. That whole album is a banger. My faves include, Blind, Clown, Fa**ot, Did My Time and many others. Welcome to the rabbit hole. Keep it going.
@@darmakx99 I absolutely LOVE Blue Monday remake by Orgy. That song still hits as hard as it did back then. I also catch myself listening to Adema at times. Gotta love the forgotten bands sometimes.
I still remember being a kid buying this CD the day it was released. The bus ride home while living in phoenix, getting on the wrong bus, not paying any attention to the surroundings because i was so into the music. The end of the bus routes for the day happened and we were in the middle of a very bad part of town and no way to get home. Had to call a friends mom to pick us up an hour and a half later. But I very vividly remember hearing this song for the first time and recognizing that it was going to be an insane success for the band. Korn has gotten me through so many difficult moments in my life. Growing up with bullying, emotional and physical abuse; KoRn’s music was the only thing I could relate to, ground me, and helped me fight another day. Without it, I would have been completely alone.
Same 👌👌👌
You sound like a radiohead kind of guy
Same, in a way.
feel you
you're not alone
stay safe
❤
Nothing sound like this band. They are incredible.
One of the great joys in my life watching vocal coaches react to JD's metal skat. Grinning from ear to ear!
You and me both! Moments like this are precious.
Beat boxing meets Gremlins is perfect. lmao I love that part.
Likewise like for so many others as well. Talking about daddy I never heard anyone actually cry in a song. That alone is so unique. 🙏🏽
OMG, your expressions are so priceless! I especially enjoyed your snarl at 13:05. Totally appropriate for this sound! Great reaction.
You are like he Sommelier of voice. The taste you bring out of a persons tone, inflection, sound etc...is most impressive...
😂😂😂 "Beatboxing meets Gremlins!" I LOVE IT! 😂
You will LOVE Korn the more you dive. Love your channel.
Agree. That video’s animation was by Todd McFarlane.
It’s the only reason I watch some of these reaction videos. It’s the closest I can get to hearing it again for the first time.
They created this genre of music. One of the absolute best vocalists in the 90s and 2000s.
“It’s a whole mood.”
Korn is most definitely a whole mood, LOL!
12:22 It never gets old 😂
currently bingeing her reactions to alt vocalists and it’s her hair greying the further into the rabbit hole she goes for me (it’s a compliment i love it im getting emotional watching you scowl and headbang!)
One of the biggest influences on Korn's early style came from a band called Mr. Bungle and the singer for that band, Mike Patton, is an amazing singer too.
Omg I’m listening to them and I can see JD was definitely a fan!
I’m watching this waiting to see your reaction to the scat breakdown and the look on your face didn’t disappoint. It’s always fun watching reaction videos knowing that part takes such an unexpected turn.
Amazing reaction. Korn is my favorite band of all time. Welcome down the rabbit hole. 🤘😃
Seen many bands live. Still my favorite live. Nobody will ever pass them 💯💯
You can not quantify Korns music, they are and always have been an innovative sound that is unlike any other. They are all genius at what they do.
I don't think that's the case with their latest album. It sounds flat, generic and forgettable to me.
@@normaluser5755 Big part of that is age and here's a big one, David Silveria. Korn have been missing his funky beats for years now (and now fieldy is gone too) Those 2 really pieced it all together.
The D riding is crazyy
The opening animation was also the CD Cover. KoRn was voice for my teenage years.
Love watching the reaction to his Skat from people who are not familiar with Korn 😍
Beatbox meets gremlins, best analogy for Korn I've ever heard, lol.
It's so easy to be transfixed by KoRn. I had to smile at the beginning of your reaction when you realized that you'd watched almost half without realizing it, went to stop but hesitated. Once you start on KoRn, it's hard to stop.
i dont know why but her face give to me peace and time to time i come and watch her videos :)
Thanks a lot!!! Now I really want to hear Cookie Monster sing this song. 😢
Honestly this is THE best representation of the band! The other two pivotal tracks are “Blind” and “Falling Away From Me”
falling away from me is wack as is Issues itself. The first 3 albums are the only good ones, period.
@@charlespancamo9771pff dude get your head out of your ass! People's tastes differ, ok?
I love your honest reactions! You're not pretending or exaggerating your facial expression while listening to the songs! I aprecciate your naturalness.
A fair amount of that percussion clicking is actually coming from the bass guitar. Loved your reaction to this song, they are truly unique.
I watched the concert they did in the middle of a corn field. It's a must watch. Great band.
Johnathan Davis is the king of the dipthong. I love how he uses them. Way underrated vocalist
Enjoy!!!
Your hair looks so awesome like that, the colour. ❤
This song is such a mainstay of my early life - to think people have never heard it is so funny and to watch someone see it for the first time is fascinating 😊 this video and sound was totally groundbreaking and shocking in it’s time. A total anthem for a generation.
Eerie and funky is the perfect way to describe Korn.
And hard. Eerie funky and hard.
Love all of your analysis. Educational and professional
Seen korn 4 times live still the best I have ever seen 💯 saw them last year thanks to having a daughter that likes alot of the same music
It’s definitely scatting

I just reply to #MrsMixMusic the music video for Make Me Famous - Kim Dracula, love this one.
ua-cam.com/video/X6o7RtOHpVc/v-deo.htmlsi=G47s9toThS8HoQhQ
The "clicking" sound is Fieldy's bass in sync with the drums. Fieldy turns the treble full-on on his bass and slaps the strings.
Korn at Woodstock 99 was off the chain. I was there and I got my ear busted at some point in the Malay.
I love her face at the improv vocals! The concerned confusion but we're all into it. XD Metalcore cookie monster is kind of accurate!
Eerie and funky is so on point
Love this song and your reaction to it
Her face throughout the first part of the video reminded me of how I probably looked like the first time I watched this on MTV as a child. Instantly hooked and was a KoRn fanatic for quite a few years. This song still causes such awe after all these years.
I remember when this came out, I was blown away. It felt so fresh and original and had so much energy.
Also, please read up on Jonathan Davis' life and read the lyrics to the song to get a better understanding of who and why Korn are ... well, Korn.
Most epic reveal ever on South Park.
I got to be backstage with the band in 1998. Great group of guys. True professionals, no silly backstage antics, just musicians. Met the whole band.
1:34 Priceless expression, watching her grapple with and analyze the transition.
Watching your facial expressions is a wonderful experience
The first one of these I saw with you, was Metallica “One” and now this. Knowing you haven’t heard the songs before and waiting for you to get to the “parts” and being able to see your reaction(s), is like a kid waiting for Christmas. Sooo good!
I've heard this song thousands of times. Hearing you talk about it makes me excited all over again and in a different way. Korn invented nu metal
You are hilarious. I know all these songs and love waiting for the big moment when I knoww you're going to be shocked.
I hope we got a new Korn fan after hearing this. Their music is... Indescribable for me. I've listened to them since I was younger and they helped me through a VERY dark time in my life. They have a special place in my heart. ❤ Plus I was always in love with Jonathan Davis 😂😂
Edit: your reactions to some parts are so fitting! Lol little snarls and whatnot. But the appreciation is shown 👏🏻👏🏻 I hope you listen to other songs by then. You won't be disappointed.
His voice is so particular 😊 and such a good song ! My teenager days coming back , and I hope to go and see them live soon 👌
I sat watching in anticipation awaiting her reaction to the scatting/drop. It did not disappoint!
Damn, she called out the reggae influences right away. 10 points Gryffindor
I still listen to 'Korn' (1995) all the way through at least once a month.
Love watching her get so into it.
Your face at 12:25 was AWESOME!!! It was then that you were hooked! LOL. Beautiful smile btw!
I think you mean Fieldy not Shifty 😂
God i will NEVER NOT get goosebumps as the drop GO! Happens! Oh man! I love watching her face hear the growls!
I love Korn but Orgy was my JAM back then. It's rare to see someone else mention them anymore 😂
@@darmakx99 I absolutely LOVE Blue Monday remake by Orgy. That song still hits as hard as it did back then. I also catch myself listening to Adema at times. Gotta love the forgotten bands sometimes.
@@darmakx99Dizzy lives in my head rent-free.
You just know a hit when you hear it and they were already a pretty big name in rock at that point.
