From one “weird embracer” to another, loved the reaction. For me the bullet represents all of the criticism and personal attacks, whether they originate externally or from our inner demons. These bullets don’t necessarily have to be intentional attacks (the guard didn’t intend to shoot, but shit still happens), but their impact doesn’t care if it was intentional or not. I was labeled as a freak when I was a kid. The bullets seemed to come from everywhere, and came often. Hearing someone else sing with such visceral expressions about this was a refuge for me. As always, much love and thank you.

Korn is one of those bands that you really need to dive into their early stuff to get the internal message going on. Jonathan Davis had a very broken childhood to say the absolute least. He wasn't allowed to be himself and he was terribly abused. Their first couple of albums they put out dove into that pretty hard. While I highly recommend giving them a listen, strap in for a real emotional journey. These albums hold a fair number of songs that people listen to so they don't feel alone with their torment.

Saw your wondering about lyrics... Jon has been through hell and back, and comes out in his vocals/lyrics exceptionally well. Notable examples: Daddy, Shoots and Ladders, Did My Time (BE AWARE- Daddy is about as heavy/disturbing of a song as you will EVER find... tragic, raw, and pure emotion. Other standouts - Twist, Blind.

The song is about KoRn putting their pain on display and how monetizing that - especially for the benefit of record companies - makes you feel like a freak on their leash at times. That necessarily begs the question: "Why do it, then?" This video is the answer
The bullet is trauma, unwittingly fired at kids by even well-meaning adults and ricocheting chaos and destruction through the world. It finds its way to a KoRn poster, entering their world, which has clearly received a lot of these bits of trauma. He defuses it with his music and turns it back on the world, destroying symbols of work, media, and government pressure. By the time it gets back to the girl, it's been rendered inert enough for her to simply pick it out of the air and go back to enjoying her life

"Originating in vocal jazz, scat singing or scatting is vocal improvisation with wordless vocables, nonsense syllables or without words at all. In scat singing, the singer improvises melodies and rhythms using the voice solely as an instrument rather than a speaking medium. This is different from vocalese, which uses recognizable lyrics that are sung to pre-existing instrumental solos. "

To me this is KoRn’s all-around masterpiece. They kind of threw it all in there: the groove, the hints of hip-hop, the guitar effects, the heavy guitars, and the crazy scatting section. Add it all up and it’s pretty much tops. P.S. I don’t 100% agree with people who think “Falling Away From Me” should be next. Yes, the video itself is a sequel to this one. However, it is also a much, much darker clip and can be hard to watch for some. People need to consider how a reactor might feel.

Still remember listening to Korn - Follow the Leader while playing Quake 2.
Man, I have a lot of thoughts about listening to this music again. First and foremost was the dark times it got me through in my teenage years, just not feeling alone. Secondly, was how hated bands like Korn were by the mainstream media, so just being a fan made you rebellious at the time. There was still a degree of "satanic panic" that was going on at the time, and you can even see reference to it at the end of the video when they show the sign and it has "666" in it. A lot of these guys just had fun with it.
It's funny, growing up my dad would listen to a lot of music from the 60s, because that's when he was a kid. Now, at 40, I understand why he still listened to 20-30 year old music. There's so much emotional history behind it, so many things you felt, and it's hard to get that same feeling as you get older. Things just hit different when you're a kid, and that music that's tied to it will always hold a special place for you.

This was Jonathan Davis portraying his teen years growing up... He was not the popular guy in school and was often bullied and called 'gay'... He had also survived trauma and sexual abuse as a child... His parents divorced and his mom remarried a catholic and had to sign a document to get married in that church that basically declared Jonathan an 'illegitimate child' (Catholics don't recognize divorce). He hated his stepmom who would apparently have cruel means to handle him (Thankfully, his dad divorced her too!)
Despite being a very creative individual, he was big into goth culture and became a fan of The Cure... then came the drugs and alcohol abuse. That was basically what 'Freak on a leash' was about - that was what he felt like he was growing up. He was not in a good place working as an assistant in a mortuary where he worked w/ dead bodies, but he was introduced to the band L.A.P.D. in Bakersfield, California and he joined forces w/ them to form KoRn in 1993... The band's early success likely saved his life, but his struggles w/ drug abuse carried on well over decades in KoRn's career.
In fact, all 5 original members of KoRn came from similar backgrounds - broken homes... neglect... abuse... They all struggled w/ drug and alcohol addictions over the years.

If you want to hear some old Korn, look up Sean Olsen. It was on The Crow: City of Angels Soundtrack.

10:10 I know I'm late with this but the style is called "scat".
Look up: Cab Calloway " The Scat Song " 1933
