I was not a big Korn fan, but I was in 12 grade when it came out, and it was like an undisclosed anthemed for my graduating class. Everyone from the goth kids, the preppy kids, the jocks, cheerleaders, nerds, geeks, etc, black white, asian, hispanic, everyone knew and would jam out to this song when it would be played. It was insane when you think about it, but it was cool for the times.

My buddy really liked them, would blast them whenever he got the chance.
for me at the time, it was "okay", and more or less just put up with it because he was my buddy.
I liked this song better today, than I did then.

The music scene in Korn's hometown of Bakersfield, CA is fascinating to me. Nu metal is the second variation on a genre that city has given birth to. The first is the Bakersfield Sound variation of country music. Pioneered by Buck Owens, it has a bit of an edge you don't get out of Nashville. I think they amped the Western part of country & western back up a bit. Anyone reading this who is of a certain age and American may remember Hee-Haw, Buck Owens' TV show that promoted his sound and its artists. You seeing episodes of Hee-Haw would be priceless, Diane!!!

Korn when they signed their first record contract they released this song. It was the Lead's displeasure at being told what to do, and being forced to the whims of the executives literally becoming a freak on a leash. They fortunately signed with a different company a year later and in the new contract they had full freedom to do what they wanted and release music on their terms. it was a new era of the stars dictating their contracts and how a record label could be happy with it.

I like @davidwillford3119's definition - Nu Metal. Never was a huge fan, but they popup in my workout music often enough because of the energy they give off. I was more into the 80s metal and then the 60/70s as I got into high school. Now I listen to everything from Amadeus to zydeco. Some days just require a Caribbean-vibe, while dinner is a nice background jazz quartet. Cooking (which I love to do) music is dependent on my mood but usually falls into the 40s big band stuff like Tommy Dorsey. I'm enjoying the variety in your selections for the adventure through music. Cheers Diane! 💚

Wouldn't consider myself a fan, but they were a part of my childhood in a way, as it came out when I was somewhere between 5th and 8th grade, and we all got to collectively experience the song. My Ukrainian mom was very strict about music and Korn was the type of thing I wasn't allowed to listen to. I got ahold of one of their cds and would listen to it under the blankets at night when i was supposed to be asleep. I only liked maybe 1.5 songs on the album, but the taboo made it more appealing, and I would replay the tracks or parts I liked in secret along with other things I wasn't allowed to listen to like any kind of rap, especially Eminem. It's probly the first thing that lead me to being a a night owl 30 years later...

KoRn debuted in 1994 and was a natural progression of the 90's angst rock music by Nirvana & Alice In Chains... except KoRn fused hip hop influences w/ heavy rock - they de-tuned their guitars and added funk grooves to create something unique and energetic. Their lyrics were controversial for invoking experiences of child abuse... loss of innocence... mental anguish... Things that people did not put into music back then... It gave a new generation of rock fans to get their anger and frustrations out into something positive.
Jonathan Davis (vocals) joined members of an Oakland, California band L.A.P.D. around 1993 and KoRn was formed and signed to indie label Immortal Records for their debut album in 1994 w/ distribution by Epic Records... The band featured Brian 'Head' Welch and James 'Munky' Shaffer (guitars), Reggie 'Fieldy' Arvizu (bass) and David Silveria (drums)... MTV put the band's videos on air in 1995 and the debut album eventually sold gold (half million copies) in the US... w/ singles like - 'Blind'... 'Clown' ... 'Shoots and ladders'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥
KoRn's 2nd album 'Life is peachy' was a darker, hardcore record and went gold even faster than their debut album.
This was KoRn's 3rd album 'Follow the leader' which charted at #1 in the US and sold 5x platinum in the US (5 million copies) and made #5 in the UK... KoRn was definitely the biggest band of their 'nu metal' genre in 1998 and they followed it up w/ another #1 album 'Issues' in 1999.
However, drug and alcohol abuse was taking a toll on the members of KoRn... After a major set at the Woodstock '99 Festival, KoRn was getting bigger and bolder musically... but falling apart under pressure behind the scenes... Guitarist Brian 'Head' Welch ended up quitting the band in 2004 after 2 more successful albums... Drummer David Silveria left in 2007 just before KoRn performed on MTV 'Unplugged' w/ Amy Lee of Evanescence performing a stellar acoustic version of 'Freak on a leash' w/ the band... KoRn released the electronic influenced 'untitled' album in 2007 and recruited Ray Luzier (drums)... but never replaced guitarist Head officially (Brian 'Head' Welch got clean and embraced Christianity... but his troubles the band persisted as he struggled to raise his daughter as a single father)
By 2011, KoRn was still successful, but rather creatively stuttering... They released a 'dubstep' album 'The Path of totality' and would finally reunite w/ Brian 'Head' Welch in 2013 for the album 'Paradigm shift'... KoRn was back on track and making new music, but in 2018... tragedy struck singer Jonathan Davis... His 2nd wife and mother to his kids Deven Davis lost her battle to drug addictions and passed away. Davis poured his grief into the 2019 KoRn album 'The Nothing'.
After the pandemic, KoRn were back w/ the album 'Requiem' in 2022 and on tour again.
Other KoRn classics - 'Got the life' ... 'Need to' ... 'Here to stay' ... 'Make me bad' ... 'Falling away from me' ... "Y'all want a single" ... 'Coming undone'... 'Hold on' ... 'Never never'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥

If I remember correctly, this video was the first one TRL had to retire because it was #1 for too many weeks in a row.
Their only other option would have been to discontinue first place because this shit might've stayed #1 forever if they hadn't.

Early Korn was great, but after awhile they changed. As they got more popular the music got weird, egos exploded, the band broke down, that whole thing.
Sometime take a look at Type O Negative - Love You To Death. Alot of their music might not be for you, but that song is amazing.
