There are theories that actually plant foods have more toxins than most meats. Plants need to protect themselves with poison because they can't run away when threatened.
At a 300lbs+ level obese, it's not so much about what they eat but about their overall lifestyle including how much they eat. People in the 1940s were fit even without the modern understanding of nutrition and fitness. There were probably also a lot fewer vegans/vegetarians, proportionately, back then. Even if you eat a big mac a day, if that's all you are eating in a single day, you are going to lose weight.

I first came across Josh on his twitter page, he's really inspirational! A whole food plant based diet is the best thing you can do for your health and well being. I've been vegan for 4.5 years and have never felt better. It's so much easier to eat a comfortable amount of food and not be getting excessive calories, saturated fat, cholesterol. Happy to see him featured here, he's an inspiration for many!

Even though I wasn't overweight, I also watched the documentary Forks Over Knives and it gave me more of an understanding of the risk associated with REGULAR meat and dairy consumption. Also, if anyone here isn't aware, PLEASE be mindful that there are a lot of abattoirs around the world that promote the word "humane" like nothing happens or no pain is felt.
In reality, these animals get mutilated to the point where they DO feel pain because of incorrect handling and there's been numerous slaughterhouses that've been exposed for this is exact reason. Don't be fooled by the words "humane" and "Free Range", they're all irrelevant when you actually see the footage (watch Earthlings) of what these animals endure.
I'd ask anyone that sees this message not to feel forced but simply make yourselves aware of how the meat and dairy industry operates. Remember, it's all about the supply and demand of these products. I always said I was against animal cruelty, so I thought I'd stand by my word 100%. Keep encouraging people and make them aware but don't be forceful!!! By the way, this is a really good sign for you America! Great work! :)

Being plant powered is the way to be! I went vegetarian 7 years ago and lost 50 pounds in a year without trying. Went vegan 2 years ago and I feel so great! I have never felt so good and maintain my weight with out even thinking about it. I eat whole plant based foods, don't count calories, and eat as much as I want. I really can't recommend this lifestyle enough. Give yourself a late xmas gift and just try it for 22 days and see how you feel (just make sure you eat enough). Google Challenge 22 to get set up with a mentor and food program for free.

My friend said certain blood types should eat different things and I believe her. I know the chemicals in meat are very bad. But I personally stopped eating a lot of meat and actually got pretty sick. I had never had low iron and I got chronic fatigue and inflammation. I’m now on a lot of iron and other vitamins and my doctor told me to start eating meat again because it’s the best iron source and I’m feeling so so much better. I’m just afraid of the chemicals. I was eating a lot of beans and greens and fruit but had to put some meat back. :(

Can you recommend recipes that are easy but good? It's hard for me to cook and basically live on easy to eat stuff like salads, sandwiches, pizza and snacks and way too much sugar!. Someone told me to dry chickpeas in the oven for snacks? I barely eat now as is and it's killing me. I used to be a picky eater as a kid, but have come a long way b/c I've lost some sense of taste and smell. I cannot eat some nuts, dark greens and I'm supposed to avoid berries but eat em sometimes. I have un underweight problem! I do like meat but when I eat anything I get pain in the gallbladder area. Not sure what's going on and the Doctors DO NOT CARE.

    • @chicawhappa

Fibrous veggies make you feel FULL, and you can eat a ton of it for less than 100 cals in one meal. Drink lots of water to make that fiber useful. Eat eggs which you can boil a bunch of (and shock in cold water, peel easily, and store in a Tupperware in the fridge) and munch on one for 70 cal shot (will keep you going an hour or more, you can use salt n pepper or a small dash of mustard, go easy on other condiments they are full of hidden sugar). Eat potatoes with their skin on. One medium or large potato a day won't make you fat but will fill your belly nice and good. Sweet potatoes (boiled / steamed not baked!!!) are also super low on the Glycemic index, and super filling and tasty. You can do 4-5 large ones in one go and keep in the fridge - slice off a fat chunk whenever you go mad with hunger, goes great plain, or with olive oil and salt/pepper, or lemon-salt, or mash it up with some jaggery for pudding :) You can also eat avocados as chunks or guacamole for your eggs. If you can get good honey (not the fake sugar ones in the supermarket) then you can cut an avocado in half, and put a shot of honey into the halves, and eat by scooping with a spoon - it's what they eat for dessert in Latin America. I find one half fills me up and the other half the next day :) Also, try some veg comfort foods from India like poha, pongal, mung khichdi, all of them fill your belly, feel really comforting, and are healthy and tasty and non-spicy. www.vegrecipesofindia.com/moong-dal-khichdi-recipe/ Finally, eat slowly and chew everything and don't do other stuff while you are eating (like videos or reading or talking).

Especially if they focus on whole foods. My uncle has been vegan for over 50 years and is the healthiest man in my entire family -- at 70, he is not overweight, takes no medications, has no aches and pains, and looks fantastic. Can't say the same for the meat-eating members of my family, who are all suffering with various ailments -- from heart disease, to high blood pressure, to diabetes -- and all have various aches and pains.

You might get temporarily thin and healthy giving up refined carbs and sugars but eating FACTORY FARMED meat will catch up with you!! It is full of antibiotics (the cows get sick so they have to feed them antibiotics-- they get horrible puss-filled infections because of the corn they are fed to fatten them up and the stress they are under. They are also full of pesticides and HORMONES. The hormones are there to fatten up the cows too - it is call BGH - BOVINE GROWTH HORMONE - and it leads to cancer in humans. It's all true ! lucaboden is correct! China "study" was handpicked, not scientific. Plant based truly works for *some* people. It would sure be great if the "debate" acknowledged that some people just need animal protein to survive. I have a friend who was literally dying on his vegan diet, so he figured out a way to add animal pro the most responsible way he could. Not an easy choice for him. PEOPLE ARE DIFFERENT and would be awesome if we supported each other to do what we need. I suspect even this thought won't go over well with haters...

Sugar is vegan, but a Whole Food Plant Based vegan diet is the healthiest diet there is! No processed Sugar, Oil, or added Salt. I don't eat 100% WFPB, but pretty close. Nothing tastes as good as healthy feels!

Maisy Hickman they were obese because their eating is out of control, not because they ate meat.
I’m 5’6” and last January, I was 360 lbs. I lost over 100 pounds since then. I lost it at a slow rate, exercised, and ate lean: well balanced carbs, fats, and proteins. I built my muscles and strength during the process and feel well energized.
Moral of the story, you do not have to become vegan to live a healthy life.

Meat isn't the villain. This guy starts off by saying that his diet was pleasure-centric, shows him drinking a beer (vegan by the way) and he talks about eating anything and everything including seven-layer cakes (wtf is that even? Another vegan monstrosity?). He would've been perfectly fine just cutting back on his horrible diet and exercising. In fact, most of what is on that table in studio is vegan. Only maybe 5% of what's on that table is meat. Meat wasn't his problem. His problem was gluttony.

Better, but not ideal. When I transitioned toward a vegan diet, the last animal product I ate was oysters. When I stopped eating them my joint pain from chronic inflammation went away. Learn to enjoy new vegan foods, like mushrooms and new ethnic cuisines.
