This is a lesson worth taking note of. This is a great material to learn from.
So basically the pharmaceutical cartels are ensuring their profits skyrocket. The insurance companies also want to make sure they don't spend more money than the bare minimum they are required to. You have to love the US and our for-profit healthcare system. It is so sad how a media program has to shame insurance in order to get a medication covered.

This was a great pharma ad -- everyone interviewed in this segment had a financial conflict. 60 Minutes declared theirs, but they did no questioning of what they were told.
There was no discussion of techniques like fasting or carnivore or keto. Just a big pharma ad. How many diet drugs that where the next big thing - were pulled from the market for causing damage? A lot.
@@CelineNoyce Exactly, establishment media is a joke -- just multinational advertizing. Look at their pitiful coverage of Ukraine -- "Brought to you by the Pentagon." I watch ABC, NBC, CNN and just burst out laughing. Its like living in the old Soviet Union.
Why ! It was a great American true understanding of the FDA , politicians, and crap we feed ourselves mentally. It’s in our best interest to create healthy Americans !
At my heaviest I was 400 lbs at age 35, that’s when I started seeing a doctor regularly. This doctor wanted to shove so much medication down my throat and insulted so many times that I ended up looking for another doctor. My new doctor put me on a better path with no medication. Saw a nutritionist that thought me how to eat. 7 years later I’m sitting at 260 with my lowest at 230. I started bodybuilding and increased my muscle mass which is why I gained weight but still look thinner than I ever was. I was fat my entire life and I know obesity is sometimes caused by your genetics. The point of my story it is possible to loose weight if you have a good support system but we are not all the same.
Congratulations! And good for you for making the commitment to yourself to find a healthcare professional who supported you. Nutritionists can be invaluable. So many people in this country aren't taught how to eat.
I agree! The fact that they consider dental “cosmetic” when every nerve ending from your teeth go all the way up into your brain, is mind boggling to me. Teeth effect your health mentally, physically, emotionally and cosmetically. I’d rather have any broken bone vs. a toothache. It is the worse! And insurance barely covers much except for a yearly cleaning and an extraction.
It's NOT a brain disease. I was diagnosed food addiction, morbid obesity, binge eating disorder and a couple of others. I started researching what foods / food components increase appetite and studies showed dairy, salt, gluten (wheat), and processed sugar (as well as a high carb diet) have the greatest effect on increasing appetite because they derange hunger hormones, preventing the body from regulating appetite appropriately. I researched what food / food components suppress appetite and protein was #1. I cut out dairy, salt, wheat, and processed sugar, and built my meals around lean and vegetables. Within days my appetite dropped like a rock. Before I couldn't do anything but think about food, and now I have to remind myself to eat! I've lost tons of weight and am not deprived in the slightest. We allow food manufacturers to poison our food supply with crap that messes up our body's ability to regulate appetite because the more we eat benefits THEM and despite the consequence killing us they're never held accountable!! To anyone reading this, please, if you're hungry, craving, can't control your appetite, cut out dairy, wheat, salt, and processed sugar! Watch how your appetite suddenly seems much more controllable! Dairy was hard for me to give up. I love cheese. And yogurt is touted as "healthy," but cow's milk is meant to fatten up cows so we shouldn't be shocked that studies show it stimulates appetite! Drop the dairy. Trust me! It's also extremely inflammatory, that's why people with arthritis are recommended to go dairy-free to improve their arthritis symptoms! Stop buying packaged "food," It's not food and our bodies don't recognize it as such. Cook your own food, cook and buy REAL food, let's get back to that! In the 70s people were thin as rails! Why? Because moms cooked their families REAL food! Not the packaged crap that food manufacturers call "food." Don't let them win, don't let them keep killing us!
People say it’s too expensive to eat healthy foods, but as you discovered, if you eat whole, natural foods, you don’t need as much food to be satiated.
So many feelings. My mother took me to my first Weight Watcher meeting at 9. I have tried to lose weight MY WHOLE LIFE. I’m in my 60 ‘s now. Lost weight many times but could never get down to a ‘normal weight’ and could never maintain the weight loss. Finally had a gastric bypass - taking the easy way out - as many have judged. Maintained an over 100 pound weight lose but today still weigh 275. (This is after working very hard and taking off 45 pounds in the last two years.) What has my obesity cost me? While I do not have diabetics or high blood pressure I do have nerve damage and constant pain from a botched double knee replacement, chronic vitamin deficiencies from malabsorption due to the gastric bypass, and decreased mobility….. and if I’m honest I never did find that special someone to start a family with. So I guess you can say it cost me a piece of my happiness. Being obese causes emotional and mental scars. When I’ve been thinner people and doctors treated me and looked at me totally different. I never wanted to live this way. I’ve lived my life thinking this is all my fault. “Come on pull yourself together and lose weight!” I’m not looking for an excuse I’m looking for help.
I am with you. I think dieting my entire life has been the problem. I think it literally trains your body to reduce its metabolism making it easy to gain weight and hard to lose it. For that reason I am not having the surgery because I bet it wouldn't help anyway. It is not your fault... There is able evidence of people having this condition - look at Oprah. That doesn't mean everyone who is obese has it.
Carol, as a child did you eat cereal for breakfast? Or other sugary, carb loaded foods like bread? I ask because I think many people have insulin problems. For some people, the standard American diet almost guarantees obesity by triggering the body to crave and consume too many carbs that then get stored as fat. I am like you. Instead of being shamed and restricted and punished, I wish someone had said, “because of the way your body works, you can eat to satiety of protein, veggies and fats. Now let’s develop recipes and a meal plan that makes you satisfied and healthy.”
Starting the day with just a bowl of cereal is not good. The commercials always say make it part of a “a balanced breakfast”. That includes much more protein than just the carbs in cereal or oatmeal. That lack of protein in the morning keeps you craving more food the rest of the day. Eggs, beans, yogurt, or other lean protein along with fruit and veggies should always be in your breakfast. Bread, grain, or other carbs should be a side dish. The cereal companies incorrectly push their products on to people simply because they want your money. Many of which have more addictive sugar in a serving than we should have in one day.
@@mrjack8849 I hear what you’re saying, but if one were to eat all that you listed for b’fast that’s too much food, too many calories and not realistic time wise. By middle school, I was skipping b’fast altogether. I have noticed the cereal aisle is much smaller recently. I think the manufacturers realized they were caught. I feed my kids very little sugar (OJ) for b’fast, no cereal and only about 300 calories of protein, fat and a grain bread. One child has good sugar control, the other is like me and craves it, can binge on it. At least, I know hope I know how to handle it better.
Food addiction has to be the hardest addiction to treat. You must still eat. Imagine telling an alcoholic that he has to drink 2 cocktails every day but no more than two... Or telling a heroin addict that they must inject heroin once each day. That's what food addicts have to do.
Lol except with food there are thousands of completely different choices, of various values in terms of health and mood. Heroin, no. Dumb analogy, friend.
@@lisampb8178 There are so many foods that can fill you up without it having to be some sugary, artificial mess though. It's not hard to google "healthy carb foods" and find alternatives. It's just ridiculous people want to pretend they are helpless about obesity when you have the whole internet at your disposal, and common sense. People just dont WANT to be healthy and dont want to buy the healthy foods because changing diet is just too hard for some people. Yes, it is an addiction, but too many Americans are not even putting in the effort to break it and just keep stuffing themselves. I don't have a lot of sympathy for overeaters, when there are so many ppl on the planet that have a LACK of food.
I grew up in the fifties and sixties, obesity was rare, even for older people. Grew up in the Midwest where hot dishes and meat loaf reigned supreme. Not a lot of meat, no fast food, getting a Hershey bar or bottle of pop was a big deal. Didn’t even get fresh fruit that often. Came to meals very hungry, no snacks. Grew up lower middle class and couldn’t afford much more than the basics. Yes, times have changed a lot. It surprises me that more people don’t have issues with weight. You only have to gain one pound a month over a year for five years and you are now obese, and on it goes. It’s much harder now to stay healthy with all the choices and temptations. I don’t think pills are the answer in the long run.
Cause people were still eating a high fat diet! The low fat high carb diet didn't get pushed until around the 70s! The flour/grain companies paid a doctor to fudge the results of research done on a study of heart problems and diets. Guess what...high fat diets don't cause more heart attacks than high carbs.

" I don’t think pills are the answer in the long run." Of course not! REAL food, non-gmo food, is the answer. But when FDA oversees food and pharma, the deck is stacked against us.
I know this sounds simple and basic, I'm male and went from 269 in March last year, to today 172 - a normal and healthy weight! It was following Keto and cutting carbs, that did it for me and I swear by it. I went from a 44" waist to 32" now 1/6/23, I'm still amazed - I can finally pull anything from my closet, and it fits - that's freedom. I'm out of 45 years of being fat, obese - never imagined I'd be thin, I'll never go back.
because of your caloric deficiency through keto. Break and carbs are packed with sugars and high on calories. Compare a steak to a bowl of pasta and the difference is substantial. Keep up the good! I went from 245 to 165 on a keto ( less calories once i cut the carbs ) and have maintained a healthy weight. Study has shown that a low carb or no carb diet was the exact same as a low calorie diet almost indistinguishable ( recent study, pretty big one at that ).
I'll be making a video about this 60 minutes obesity video soon (stay tuned). One of the thoughts I had while watching this was exactly what @josmacch said (most upvoted comment). The biggest reason we have an obesity epidemic has everything to with our environment (food manufacturers, processed food, etc), and how the obesogens and endocrine-disrupting molecules in our environment have impacted our epigenetics (it's not genetics as our genes have not changed since human existence). And altered epigenetics affects downstream generations - it's called transgenerational epigenetic inheritance.
what i can't get is what epigenetics is controlling the location and volume of GLP-1 receptors and further Why societies `need` drugs to mess with that ? didn't natural selection compensate for this except where we introduce drugs to speed up 30 generational changes into 2 or 3
Best doctor comment ive seen in the internet. The food manufacturers have real scientists testing the food trying to make it addicting so that we can keep buying.

What does that have to do with the insinuation that this woman is claiming? Not the most important detail here but I really appreciate them making a point that the pharma company that makes the drug is an advertiser on the show. We need more of that kind of transparency in news media
An extremely important detail. It's advertising for Pharma. And I'm sure the doctor's advocating the drug probably have a vested interest. Most doctors today are Pharmaceutical salespeople.
Why do you think they did this piece with a quack doctor saying ‘ehhh willpower does nothing at all, most people can’t do anything, 🎵 oh oh oh, ozempic ™️ 🎵
I'm really torn with this piece. I think there are a lot of factors at play when it comes to weight loss. I was 205 a couple years ago, I am now 171. A couple of observations I've made. The 1st is, fitness is an all immersive lifestyle. It's about routines, discipline, and having fun. I think the having fun part is soo ridiculously important. A run, a lift, a karate class, a spin class should not feel like a chore. It should almost be looked at an outlet or a release. Not a laborious, awful undertaking. Also, weight loss is not about deadlines, or crash diets, or even goals. It's about healthily existing. I simply cut back, substituted a few known "bad" things for better things. Never did I starve myself, or do some sort of drastic diet. The weight slowly but surely came off, and stayed off. I'm not trying to oversimplify things. It took me years to sort of find the right cocktail combination. It just seems like everyone turns to big time trivial measurements, "20 pounds in 4 weeks," or "I want to run a 5k in 3 months." I think ridding of that goal oriented crap is freeing. It seems like after you accomplish the goal you simply regress and are worse off than you were before. I guess what I'm saying is, don't be defined by your previous journey or what a doctor or dietician tells you. Ultimately you are the master and the architect of the blueprint.
@@ChristopherShreeve what they are discovering is the brain tries, in some of these people with hormonal issues, to keep their body at a higher "set point". Even Dr. Jason Fung - The Obesity Code - is a firm believer in the set point, along with insulin resistance.

Just general common sense stuff… - Don’t eat calorie dense food. - eat in a small deficit -move more --> you lose weight Reason I gained weight was eating crap, drinking wine and sitting on the couch…
Seems that you are in the same boat as taking the pills. Diet changes are far more effective (80%) than exercise. Getting away from the processed food is the way to go. Don't get me wrong I think exercise is great but not as the main event for weight loss.
Yeah and I love how they so much focus on what these people are eating and then they make it out like they're not overeating will compare to their exercise they're overeating notice that the Biggest Loser isn't just about eating it's about exercises well what these people want to do is go okay well I'm eating a regular diet I should lose weight no you have to eat less than a regular diet to lose weight or you have to exercise and all of them refuse to be in pain or be uncomfortable because that's what exercise is just the same way they refuse to be in pain or be uncomfortable because they're hungry so they won't eat less

My face has pretty much cleared up too. I also have a great supportive doctor. It is not a complete "fix" and someone needs to be ready to make the changes. I am following the diabetic weight watchers plan to help me with food choices. It does do something to you brain - not sure but once again, super grateful. Wow. This med brings about 15-22% of weight loss. That's impressive. No wonder it has been on market for years as an effective medication for diabetes. Unfortunately, the pharmaceutical company has given a new brand name and packaging to the same active ingredient in order to label it to treat obesity and selling it for 4-5 times as much.
@Jasper Holdem The active ingredient has been around for quite some time as a treatment for diabetes, and millions of people have been on it for years. All that's been done is the pharmaceutical company realized a side effect of the drug is weight loss, and they had clinicals to measure its effectiveness as a weight loss drug. The FDA approved it initially to treat diabetes and now it's approved to treat obesity. It's like an Rx drug that treats migraines now being approved for menstrual cramps.
Recent studies have questioned the claimed effectiveness. Just like all drugs, it has a ton of hype, everyone gets on it at the highest possible price and then, in a year or so, it is discovered to be deadly and they pull it from the market.
Why don't other countries have the same obesity problems as the U.S.? The only countries that have started to experience obesity issues are the ones with American junk food companies taking over. Maybe... just maybe... it's the food we eat, and using a drug is just a bandaid that does not solve the problem.
It has been Sooo sad for me to be obese for most of my life. Yes some of the sadness is how people view me, and some of it is that I want to be thin so I can do more of things I want to do. THE BIGGEST historical source of the epidemic of US obesity is the baseless push for low-fat and pushing people to breakfast cereals and breads and pastas as the basis of a healthy food pyramid for most of our lives. The only sustainable progress I have found is switching to a keto and carnivore 'diet', all my health markers have been improving and the weight is coming off well. By 'diet' it is not something I am doing for 'awhile' to loose weight and then go back to the standard american diet that is killing everybody. It is a solid lifelong diet in tune with what humans evolved to eat. At least getting off the ultra processed standard american foods and reducing carbs/sugars helps everybody. Our genetics haven't changed since we were semi-nomadic hunter gatherers where our genome spent 99% of it's time, hunter gatherers are across the board at ideal BMI, and they work on average 4 hrs a day to provide all their needs, modern/agriculturalists people's assumptions about how hunter-gatherers lived aside.
The pyramid has been brought up quite a bit by nutritionists who advocate a healthy lifestyle. They seem to say the same thing : Don't blame the pyramid because no one ever really followed it.
@@suzanneb6608 some people may not have. And I disagree, plenty of people did and still gained plenty of weight. The real problem was the assumption that a diet based on a vast majority of carbohydrates of one form or another was healthy. Still the vast majority of Americans calories come from carbohydrates. And carbs aren't even that different. The glycemic index of a slice of organic multigrain bread is higher than the glycemic index of a Snickers bar which also has at least a little bit of protein. Completely obviously I'm not saying anyone should eat a Snickers bar, and the issue is thinking that all these grains are healthy.
Nomadic hunter gatherers weren't sitting at a desk all day and weren't at a computer. They also didn't have grocery stores. The life expectancy of the original ones thousands of years ago was mid-30s. Not a fair comparison.
Insulin resistance brought on by excess sugar intake. People have to understand what they are eating when they eat a Big Mac. And if the problem is access to healthy food for a good price, we can blame the federal government for pushing corn for so long. What is cheap is what is available.
Both of the doctors (Stanford and Apovian) in the video have accepted thousands of dollars from Novo Nordisk (the company behind Wegoovy). This whole story is a pharmaceutical ad.
But you can’t get it in Australia due to it being so low in stock, Doctors being told not to prescribe for obesity anymore, pharmacists only able to prescribe to diabetics and the company who supplies it causing people who need it for weight loss to lose their minds over it. Most of us were able to get one or two months supply without any issues a year ago, and found it worked, then all of a sudden they stop supplying it, giving reasons like covid [blame everything thing in short supply of the rona), short supply of the injectors, then the meds in the injectors, then my Doctor telling me it’s the govt in Australia who don’t want to supply it (not as much if any of a short supply in the rest of the world). They have seen it work, they can see it will help stop future diseases that may not happen if we lose the weight, they get people to use it, see how well it works, then take it away so they can charge stupid dollars for it. Crazy run world we live in.
Obesity is not misunderstood. It is very well understood. There are many who can’t figure their situation out and help themselves that’s called being weak willed.
Three words: follow the dollar. As a health and wellness coach and with a PhD in nutrition, I can assure everyone that food absolutely can be and IS medicine when it's treated as such! The keys to its effectiveness, however, involve an individual's readiness to change and willingness to do the work. Some level of personal responsibility needs to be owned, too. No one can tell me that with my professional experience and 26+ years in the industry that nutrition, behavioral changes, and movement need to (for most) take a backseat to a money-making Rx. Why not make nutrition compliance, behavioral support, and movement (when possible) compulsory BEFORE medication is prescribed? Do better, America. Our future depends on it. P.S. "A physician would never suggest nutrition changes for high blood pressure, diabetes, etc.?" Don't even get me started on that one...ESPECIALLY when those conditions are borderline, that's EXACTLY what they should be doing.
I agree with you 100% however refrain from absolutes…. I know plenty doctors prescribe just what you say however the patient usually want a pill or some other get quick weight loss procedure. In addition with this kind of media that says obesity is not your fault then it means all the terrible eating didn’t cause this.
Yes. The problem with the genetic hypothesis is that then people should have been obese for the last 2000 years. Why are they just skyrocketing in the last hundred years. I wonder what would happen if you took people who suffer from all these lifestyle illnesses and sent them to a Greek island to eat the food, have sunshine, community, and work the land.

4:10 - I jut got triggered. In the early 2000's, I had my regular physician literally mock my dismay over my weight. I was in pain and couldn't walk because of my osteoarthritis in hip. I was born with a defect and began to gain weight in my mid-thirties although I was still active, especially with three young sons. I ate less, I really didn't eat fast food anyway, gave up soda, lessen coffee and sugar. With stress and starvation and I got to 225. He told me I was lying to myself about my eating and movement. He refused to sign a disable placard application because he thought I wanted to run the system and go on disability. No, I needed to park closed to my office and not walk up and downhill 3 blocks from the employee parking area. When referred to an orthopedic surgeon, he didn't bother to look up at my when I came in the room, he just said "You're too heavy for surgery".
I am 64. At 42 I started gaining weight quickly (80 lbs in two years) I went to 3 different doctors before I finally got a diagnosis:Hashimoto's; a genetic auto immune disease that destroys your thyroid. I had the sleeve operation removing 2/3 of my stomache and lost 40 lbs which I have been able to keep off but after doing keto and losing another 23 lbs, I plateaued and could not lose anymore so eventually I slid off the keto, am back to just 40 lb loss. I am still 80-90 lbs over where I should be so I hope medicare begins to pick this up. I don't see how it could not save them money in the long term. I do exercise a little but have knee issues now. Until all this started at 42, I was in great shape, running 2-3 miles 3-4 days a week.
I've been heavy all of my life. I was born average sized and started 'gaining weight' at age 3. I'm one of five siblings & I'm the only one that was fat. I've spent most of my life struggling & accepting my body, yet my blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, etc. were all normal. Now in my mid-50s I was diagnosed with diabetes (a disease that has ravaged both my mother & father's side), so I've switched to low-carb eating. It has helped in lowering my glucose levels & I don't need medication. I've lost weight, too, but not at the same rate as others who eat low carb (KETO). I'm happy w/ knowing that I don't have issues with diabetes, providing I stay away from processed sugar or excess carbs. Will I loose more weight? Don't know. I do believe that genetics have a big part of body size.
@@stephanieweiland4062 She's been on for uhh I think about 2 years. I started in September 2021 and I will end next month. The trick is going to be keeping it off though.
This is not covered by insurance because obesity is not solved with medication and surgery - it is just kicked down the road and it comes back every time. Obesity is only solved by dealing with the mental health issues that caused the person to equate food with comfort in the first place.
You can't break the laws of physics. If you are in a caloric deficit, you will lose weight 100% of the time. How much you lose compared to someone on the same caloric deficit will certainly differ, but you will lose weight. Telling people that they don't have the power to take their health into their hands and to rely on doctors is very dangerous. Studies have consistently shown that overweight and obese people will exaggerate how much exercise and activity they perform and grossly underestimate how many calories they are eating, and this is in the 30-50% range. It's less about genetics and more about behaviors and cultures. Children will tend to adopt the eating habits of their parents. If their parents are obese, chances are there is going to be a steady supply of high calorie snack food always available in the house, and the children will tend to snack along with the parents. All of this is perfectly explainable without needing to resort to genetics. The reason why contestants regain weight on the biggest loser or the reason why people tend to regain severe acute weight loss is because their diets are not sustainable, the term diet isn't the best word to use here, in order to lose weight and keep it off you need to make a permanent change in your life and most people think they can lose some weight then go back to their old ways of non activity and eating whatever they want. I used to weigh 270 lbs at 5'11 putting me at 37 bmi, near morbid obesity, I was able to lose 105 lbs about 4-5 years ago and I've kept it off. It's possible, it just takes enormous willpower and the willingness to permanently change your daily habits.
As someone with anorexia nervosa, who struggles both mentally AND physically to maintain a "healthy" weight, I've often wondered if my setpoint is messed up in the opposite direction. For me, it's waaaaaaay too easy to drop weight, and when I try to regain, I'm always shocked at the amount of calories (3000+)I have to consume to do so

I think eating disorders definitely mess up your metabolism. I tried to discuss this with my Dr but as they seem to know next to nothing about this it was a total waste of time.
Wow lost a lot of respect for 60 minutes. Can’t believe the blatant advertising for pharmaceutical companies. Seriously, after watching this I can never believe what they reported again.
I'm on disability and my insurance covered Ozempic for my diabetes. I have a unique condition that the only physical sign I have if I'm having a heart attack is a consistent build-up of gas in my stomach for hours (during a severe heart attack I had a RAPID buildup of gas in my stomach). The side affects of Ozempic caused a consistent build-up of gas in my stomach for hours, mimicking my heart attack symptoms, and I had to go to the emergency room. I had to go off Ozempic after that.

@@joetomfoolery1343 That's exactly what the person was explaining, the side effects she experienced. Who are you to police other people's comments? Medications having side effects, some of them being deadly, is exactly why people shouldn't be so quick to take them.
A famous psychologist once said on his show about helping people lose weight, "You can't eat like a bird and look like an elephant." I can not believe that a person that eats nutritiously healthy foods at the basic caloric requirement and does some form or exercise daily can become obese. I want to be open minded about this and not fat shaming. Show me compelling verified evidence that obesity is genetic as in no matter what you do, you will be obese.
Fast food, stretch material in clothing, vanity sizing, getting rid of gym class in schools, 24 hour news cycles that make parents afraid to let their kids play outside, changing the food pyramid, computers and gaming systems, Huge portion sizes, the list can go on and on… Just watched a channel on UA-cam about vintage clothing patterns. Compared what sizes were 50 years ago to today. I had size 36” hips back then which put me in a woman’s size 14. Today 36” hips puts you into a size 4. 😂😂😂
It's so sweet when you start getting rid of that unwanted weight. Phenq was a game changer in my life. I lost 42 pounds in about 12 weeks and have kept it off since then. My main issue then was that I exercised daily, but struggled with my calorie intake. It was just impossible for me to eat less. It felt like I wasn't in control of my actions. My journey got 10x easier when I started taking Phenq pills. Eating less became possible, it felt as though my hunger disappeared and I also had enough energy to exercise. Best feeling ever 😊
This doctor needs to keep it real. I was obese with type 2 diabetes, until I went vegan and lost weight, and my diabetes went into remission. It's always our diets.
Not always the case. There are diseases that cause weight gain; they are hormone driven. It's not always about calories. Two people can eat the same exact food yet their hormone levels in their body tells it what to do with that food, leading one to gain weight where the other person doesn't. It's a complex problem.
Interesting how a drug to treat diabetes helps you lose weight and insulin (a hormone) plays a huge role in fat storage. Not only is are sugar / starches bad (raises insulin levels), but vegetable oils are just as bad for causing health problems and most processed food is loaded with them. Going low carb and cutting out unhealthy oils, plus diary, has cause at least half a dozen of my health issues to resolve on their own.
I was eating Vegan for a year when I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. Insulin Resistance can be brought about by carbohydrate consumption that exceeds one’s individual tolerance.
I’ve been vegan for 11 years and I can easily gain weight if I eat processed vegan food. Eating real food, getting regular exercise, is a lifestyle not a diet. Obesity doesn’t happen overnight for most. Also immune disorders are a serious condition that affects thousands if not millions at this point making weight loss very difficult but not necessarily altogether impossible.
I can’t believe that Ms Stahl could allow herself to be duped by this so-called expert. Absolutely ridiculous comments and claims from this dr. Genetics responsible for obesity???? Cmon!
I wish more people knew of the benefits of extended water fasting and how it can reset the body. And it's free. Doctors and pharma want to keep people sick.
@bake4795. No they are not dying, these drugs are for type 2 diabetes, it's not insulin these are peptides. There are several other just as effective type 2 diabetic medications. I know I'm an RN who gave them for many years with great patient success. You're looking to shame others, please learn science before making assanine statements as " diabetics are dying" from not getting these meds that's absolutely false
Wegovy has definitely been a game changer in my life. I can totally relate to the two Ladies in the video. Those doctors are awesome. Thankfully my insurance has been great with coverage. Started August 8, 2021. My weight was 310. Now I weight 217 and I’m still working towards my goal weight. I have struggled mostly all my life with my weight. It’s helps to have doctors that understand and sympathize.
Sugar substitutes, particularly aspartame, are probably a big cause of what she’s calling a brain disease. Almost all processed food has corn syrup in some form. Remember “corn fed” beef?? Marbled with fat? Huge portions are served in restaurants. And so much of what is fast food are deep fried. Behavior change is the smartest thing they talked about in this video.
As a morbidly obese person I have many feelings about my weight issue. I have had surgeries, psychological therapy, etc. my entire adult life. I cannot get Ozempic from my pharmacy. It sucks.
Drugs isn't the answer. What you eat is the answer and problem. If you're serious about your health look into Dr. Shawn Baker. Dr. Ken Berry, Dr Gary Fettke....start there. It'll change your life if you eat nutrient dense food. Be proactive in your health. No drug is gonna heal you.
The problem with weight loss surgery is that it wipes out healthy gut bacteria from removing certain parts of your GI tract. It also negatively affects your immune system. Healthy gut bacteria helps metabolize food efficiently so you don’t store body fat. I think weight loss surgery is a false hope- most stretch out their stomachs once again, and regain the weight and usually more, this time with a less efficient physiology. Look to restoring your gut AND overriding old eating habits with better ones to lose weight and keep it off permanently. It’s a choice to work on it daily. If you want resources and more info, happy to give to you free of charge. And no- I’m not selling anything .
obesity is not taken as seriously as anything else because eating too much is literally related to all companies that sell food or drinks profit. if this medicine becomes normalized and spread, then their profits will dwindle a lot. imagine if all the obese people on america was on this drug? mcdonalds or other fast food chains would need to close down a lot of its stores.
You can lose weight on your own I have struggled with weight all my life finally got on a plan and stuck with it and it worked unfortunately you have to eliminate sugar and many high carb white foods fries pasta bread because the potatoes n bread we are eating today is not the same as it was yesterday you have to be your own advocate the doctor will only treat the illnesses God gave us the foods we need to heal
Something I've noticed is that when I was growing up in the sixties and seventies, there were not alot of obese people. For that matter, the same goes for the 80's and 90's. I work in a grocery store and at least 3 out of 4 people are overweight. Most of them you would call obese. I observe what they buy, and most of the time it's processed convenient foods and sugary foods. Also, if the parents are obese, chances are their children will be, as well. It has to do with their diet. Fast food is on every corner in this day and age. When I was a kid, eating fast food was a treat. Now it is an everyday occurrence for alot of people. And let's not talk about the highly caloric coffee drinks that people consume, as well. I'm sorry, but I just don't buy it when obese people say that they don't eat alot.
I completely agree with you. It is true and can say that because I'm one of them. Unfortunately, I'm obese because I eat too much. Fortunately that is now going to change.
I’d never be so quick to be on new medications. Many of these diabetic and/ or obesity drugs end up being taken off the market because of dangerous side effects.
Exactly. I was on Belviq for just a few weeks, caused me heart palpitations -- got off it. They pulled it from the market for possibly causing cancer... and within a year I was diagnosed with a precancerous condition. I can't prove Belviq caused it. Did you know about 50 drugs currently on the market are suspected of causing cancer?
The skeptic interpretation is that insurance companies will make more money from obese people staying sick. Think of the billions they will lose from CPAP machines, hypertension, and other diabetes medications.
My BMI reached >40, so my doctor started me on Ozempic. Immediately, I noticed my appetite decreased. I wasn't getting hungry as often anymore, and felt full with smaller servings. I've lost 20 lbs in the past 7 months without even trying to. It's amazing! In a few years, I'm sure more insurance companies will cover the semaglutide medications. The cost will be lower, and newer even better medications will be available.
It seems you are happy with losing 20 lbs. in 28 weeks, but that is less than a pound per week of weight loss. It seems shockingly low considering your BMI is so high.
It's honestly disgusting such blatantly false information makes national headlines like this. And it always goes back to money. The drug companies paid for this entire segment to get all these people with "obese genetics" to run to their doctors. No money to be made in healthy lifestyle changes unfortunately.
Thank you to someone saying it is genetics. I literally watch people around me that are thin eat whatever the heck they want, but if I even ate a portion of what they eat, I would gain more weight. I've always been around the same weight. Yes, I have my moments when I do not eat as healthy as I should, however, for the most part, I'm eating all the fruits, vegetables, lean meats, watching the carb intake, etc. I have to feel guilty every time I even think of having a piece of cheesecake. I don't really eat chips, have ice cream maybe twice per year, and even went on the AIP (auto immune protocol) lifestyle change monitoring every food that you intake. I am still hovering around the same weight. I walk more, I've cut out soda completely for over 4 years, drinking way more water, etc. My family is a mix of genetically predisposition for being larger. Some are thin, some are heavy. I took after the heavier ones.
You don't match their movement level and they aren't eating like that on a regular basis- maybe that one big meal is all they eat for the day and you go on to have a similarly sized meal for dinner. That's how it works. I used to think similar thoughts when I saw other people eat- but I wasn't being realistic about the differences in what we regularly ate.
@Twinkie989 I so agree with that. The amount of people who have told me throughout my life that I am genetically thin and fit because I eat more than them... Yes during my meal I tend to eat more than my French women colleagues or friends. But guess what my plates are always half full with veggies because I love them, I naturally eat slowly so my brain has time to receive the message that I am full. I eat nutritious food untill I am full. I don't snack during the day because I am full from my meals. They also choose to ignore that I drink water when they all drink alcohol. I just hate alcohol. I am satisfied and happy with my diet and have never went on a restrictive crazy diet just because I had noticed that I took 2kg during Xmas holidays where I definitely tend to eat more. I don't get anxiety about that and just go back to my regular diet. The weight will go down naturally if you eat excessively for a short period of time. But playing with those restrictive diets will mess you up for life. For the fact that I am still fit at 40... Guess what I have been working out gently as I like to say, forever. Again I don't do crazy work out but pilates and lifting at home (I hate the gym) running ( it's free and freeing for the mind), swimming in the summer, I love to walk a lot.... I do all that consistently. It's a lifestyle which started since my teenage years. When I look at them they don't do all of that, but just go on diets and crazy work out a few times a year which leads to the yoyo effect. I stopped long ago to give them tips they won't listen to. I just continue to do what I have always been doing while ignoring the comments I always get " you're just naturally thin". Yeah, sure. It has nothing to do with my healthy lifetime lifestyle lol.
@@Twinkie989 I am usually more active than they are by a long shot. I do intermittent fasting. Breakfast is not something I usually do. I was busy all day with housework, our house has 5 flights of stairs to get to the laundry room. Several trips up and down them. Lunch was a big salad with hard boiled eggs and the last of our summer veggies into it. That's another thing, I grow all of our produce. Supper was a treat of going out for beef tips and I had a side of steamed corn. I ate half. This morning I had the last of the seaweed salad and the leftovers. For lunch, I had a red pear. I have PCOS and eat healthy and exercise daily and the scale doesn’t budge. This has been a problem for decades. Doctors have told me to exercise more or eat fewer calories. I eas doing triathlons and half marathons and measuring every ounce of food i ate. I started using Ozempic a year ago and made sure to pay for the higher health insurance coverage because I knew Ozempic was costly. The last week of the year, I got a letter from my insurance who said they won’t cover Ozempic for me anymore. Just as I really started to lose. I don’t want surgery and I was really hopeful that Ozempic combined with healthy eating and exercise would finally help me reach my goals. What I hate the most is that I don’t go to the doctor for anything other than this and now I am committed to a year of the most expensive health insurance coverage option.
I had a gastric bypass and lost over half of the 60# I lost on the pre op diet. As soon as I started eating “regular” food in post op month 4 I started gaining back.
I think it’s extreme dieting, at least partly, that leads to overweight and obesity. For every 10 lbs. I lost on a strict diet, I gained an average of 13 lbs. back. The more we starve ourselves, the better our metabolism adjusts to conserving fat. Our bodies think we’re starving when we diet, and it does what it must to guard against the “next famine”.

This is a lesson worth taking note of. This is a great material to learn from.
So basically the pharmaceutical cartels are ensuring their profits skyrocket. The insurance companies also want to make sure they don't spend more money than the bare minimum they are required to.

Can we please start covering dental care for everyone?
That's the BIG one or something we can all pay into or something.
Yes, in the developed countries, but just not in America. For Profit Health care!!!
I shouldn’t be held liable (via taxes) if someone decides to make their teeth yellow 🚬
Uh vote republicans out of government and that just might happen.
Yes 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
So many feelings.
My mother took me to my first Weight Watcher meeting at 9. I have tried to lose weight MY WHOLE LIFE. I’m in my 60 ‘s now. Lost weight many times but could never get down to a ‘normal weight’ and could never maintain the weight loss. Finally had a gastric bypass - taking the easy way out - as many have judged. Maintained an over 100 pound weight lose but today still weigh 275. (This is after working very hard and taking off 45 pounds in the last two years.) What has my obesity cost me? While I do not have diabetics or high blood pressure I do have nerve damage and constant pain from a botched double knee replacement, chronic vitamin deficiencies from malabsorption due to the gastric bypass, and decreased mobility….. and if I’m honest I never did find that special someone to start a
family with. So I guess you can say it cost me a piece of my happiness. Being obese causes emotional and mental scars. When I’ve been thinner people and doctors treated me and looked at me totally different. I never wanted to live this way. I’ve lived my life thinking this is all my fault. “Come on pull yourself together and lose weight!”
I’m not looking for an excuse I’m looking for help.
Doesn't matter how you get there as long as you get there. Congratulations Carol. Wasn't it nice to find out it was the food the whole time
Carol, as a child did you eat cereal for breakfast?

Many reasons for obesity including, and, not limited to: food deserts, lack of money, mental health, lack of education….be kind!
It’s our food I go to Africa I ate one meal I was satisfied I came back dropped 10 pounds with out working out we have ruined our soil food all for corporate gain and they don’t care cancer is because of our food
Yep. Basically, food is now much more affordable than before.
When Leslie told the heavier woman that the insurance was going to pay for her drug.. she looked like a deer in headlights.. bc she knows now.. she has no excuses left
She can take the med she is dying for but without diet and exercise .. she won’t drop any weight
Keto is the only thing that works for me too.
Because that’s real scientific stuff. I guess the problem for us in America is that it doesn’t make money to do that
me too , but as soon w stop up it goes
because of your caloric deficiency through keto.
I can only say, I weigh weigh 173 now. Why should I feel weird?
I'll be making a video about this 60 minutes obesity video soon (stay tuned). One of the thoughts I had while watching this was exactly what @josmacch said (most upvoted comment). The biggest reason we have an obesity epidemic has everything to with our environment (food manufacturers, processed food, etc), and how the obesogens and endocrine-disrupting molecules in our environment have impacted our epigenetics (it's not genetics as our genes have not changed since human existence). And altered epigenetics affects downstream generations - it's called transgenerational epigenetic inheritance.
This times infinity. When I’m in the EU, I always lose weight, even if I eat “junk” food, and it definitely has to do with the food quality.
what i can't get is what epigenetics is controlling the location and volume of GLP-1 receptors and further Why societies `need` drugs to mess with that ? didn't natural selection compensate for this except where we introduce drugs to speed up 30 generational changes into 2 or 3
Best doctor comment ive seen in the internet. The food manufacturers have real scientists testing the food trying to make it addicting so that we can keep buying.

Obesity started when GMO foods were given to the public. Countries that don’t allow GMO don’t suffer from obesity
Fix your food choices
Correction WeGovy is $1300 and Ozempic is $1050 or so. So yes they do charge an extra $250 or so.
Why don't other countries have the same obesity problems as the U.S.? The only countries that have started to experience obesity issues are the ones with American junk food companies taking over. Maybe... just maybe... it's the food we eat, and using a drug is just a bandaid that does not solve the problem.
Bingo
Another bingo.
It’s also the car culture in the US. Americans don’t want anywhere. Walking is very common in Europe.
Exactly!!
She’s right a lot of doctors don’t understand obesity and a lot of people don’t think to consider insulin resistance as an issue
Insulin resistance brought on by excess sugar intake. People have to understand what they are eating when they eat a Big Mac. And if the problem is access to healthy food for a good price, we can blame the federal government for pushing corn for so long. What is cheap is what is available.
💯
Doctors aren’t experts in health, they’re experts in medicine.

Costs 400 per month in Australia. I have no health insurance. It definitely works, lm in a healthy weight range now.
It’s damn cheap in USA it’s more than thousand dollars/month.
The food industry is the problem
Probably about 10% of what's in the grocery store is ok to consume on a daily basis.
100% correct
Obesity is not misunderstood. It is very well understood. There are many who can’t figure their situation out and help themselves that’s called being weak willed.
This is a new low for 60 minutes. An actual infomercial disguised as news!
I know plenty doctors prescribe just what you say however the patient usually want a pill or some other get quick weight loss procedure. our food supply is so full of chemicals.
I’ve eaten healthy, rarely drink, and workout almost every single day for most of my life. And people say “you’re so lucky to have those genetics”
Work ethic and giving a damn runs in the genes.
This is not covered by insurance because obesity is not solved with medication and surgery - it is just kicked down the road and it comes back every time. Obesity is only solved by dealing with the mental health issues that caused the person to equate food with comfort in the first place.
I wish more people read this
You can't break the laws of physics.
For me, it's waaaaaaay too easy to drop weight, and when I try to regain, I'm always shocked at the amount of calories (3000+)I have to consume to do so
That's a great question
Wow! Have you had your thyroid checked? I’ve heard thyroid issues make people either gain or lose weight.
I think that's very plausible...set points are very hard to fight whether high or low

So what … u had what’s called a side effect.. all meds have side effects.. it’s not for u

Obesity is sooooo simple to fix, don’t eat as many calories.
Fast food, stretch material in clothing, vanity sizing, getting rid of gym class in schools, 24 hour news cycles that make parents afraid to let their kids play outside, changing the food pyramid, computers and gaming systems, Huge portion sizes, the list can go on and on…
Just watched a channel on UA-cam about vintage clothing patterns. Compared what sizes were 50 years ago to today. I had size 36” hips back then which put me in a woman’s size 14. Today 36” hips puts you into a size 4. 😂😂😂
You have a point, but once you are obese.....there is not a lot of help.
Insurance makes WAY more money keeping us fat than allowing us to get healthier!
Except now that Ozempic was approved for weightloss and covered by insurance, it is always out of stock for actual diabetics.
Obesity is not a disease. Ignore the entire center of your grocery store and find out.
This doctor needs to keep it real.
I was obese with type 2 diabetes,
until I went vegan and lost weight,
and my diabetes went into remission.
Thank you most type 2 diabetes is manageable
Cmon!
Yes, let's just keep medicating, so pharma can continue to make big profits off of your ill health that they cause.
I wish more people knew of the benefits of extended water fasting and how it can reset the body. And it's free. Doctors and pharma want to keep people sick.
Its insane that people cant see what they're eating is making them sick. They're have processed food addiction.
slight problem: this is not letting people with diabetes get their medication and the are dying
So stress can change the set point but not willpower?
What a joke
Wegovy has definitely been a game changer in my life. I can totally relate to the two Ladies in the video. Those doctors are awesome. Thankfully my insurance has been great with coverage. Started August 8, 2021. My weight was 310. Now I weight 217 and I’m still working towards my goal weight. I have struggled mostly all my life with my weight. It’s helps to have doctors that understand and sympathize.
wegovy is for losers who cant do it the right way 😂
Sugar substitutes, particularly aspartame, are probably a big cause of what she’s calling a brain disease.
It sucks.
Poupee W please read my comment.
Eat less food.
Eat in front of a mirror😊
Drink water, eat greens, avoid greasy food, and start walking more.
obesity is not taken as seriously as anything else because eating too much is literally related to all companies that sell food or drinks profit. if this medicine becomes normalized and spread, then their profits will dwindle a lot. imagine if all the obese people on america was on this drug? mcdonalds or other fast food chains would need to close down a lot of its stores.
People are just wealthy and prefer to have fun eating bad food than eat good food that's less fun.
I hate these kind of trash shows.

@@CelineNoyce Unfortunately, that’s how it is. It’s hard to come up with medications that have no side effects. Even Tylenol has serious side effects.

The skeptic interpretation is that insurance companies will make more money from obese people staying sick. Think of the billions they will lose from CPAP machines, hypertension, and other diabetes medications.
Obesity is just as much of an addiction as alcoholism, gambling addiction or any other. Food is simply another drug of choice.
I was 135 pound 4 years ago, and it was very hard to stay that small. I was a size 3...now I'm 160 to 170
What, a health insurance company that doesn't want to cover necessary medical care!!! I'm SHOCKED!!! SHOCKED!!! This can't be happening!!!
It seems shockingly low considering your BMI is so high.
just do some exercise and eat a well balanced diet and stop trying to promote drugs
I feel so bad for the overweight people who see this and genuinely believe that’s it’s in their genetics to be fat as opposed to their own habits.
It's honestly disgusting such blatantly false information makes national headlines like this.
And it always goes back to money. The drug companies paid for this entire segment to get all these people with "obese genetics" to run to their doctors. No money to be made in healthy lifestyle changes unfortunately.
What deals were made to get this on 60 minutes? Commercial for the drugs.
@@Twinkie989 nurture but personal responsibility doesn’t exist so we blame nature
I do not eat heavy meals on any of them and my dinner meal may be nothing more than a salad. Yesterday's meals were seaweed salad for breakfast with a glass of ice water. Just because I wanted to. I've been on Ozempic n I've lost 73lbs in the past 9 mos. N I've always said I don't understand why insurance companies won't pay for weightloss drugs rather than keep paying for the diseases they cause.
Try Keto if you haven’t yet. It’s the only thing that worked for me.
Keto, Carnivore, Fasting all proven to help PCOS.

Lisa - were you able to get your doctor to prescribe it? Is insurance covering the cost?
I think it’s extreme dieting, at least partly, that leads to overweight and obesity. For every 10 lbs. I lost on a strict diet, I gained an average of 13 lbs. back. The more we starve ourselves, the better our metabolism adjusts to conserving fat. Our bodies think we’re starving when we diet, and it does what it must to guard against the “next famine”.
Absolutely!
Agree. My mom started me dieting at 13 at a normal weight. I believe every diet suppresses the metabolism for good.
