It’s so unfortunate M1 doesn’t get much of these features. 😭 It’s only a generation old and they made it such a big deal, but now it’s all about M2.
M1 doesn't have it??? Why
@@mathieul4303 because apple
The definitely could implement the feature to other devices, they just desperately needed to find an excuse to make user upgrade to m2
@@TsukatsukiRio Right? It’s frustrating. The jump from M1 to M2 is slightly minimal, yet, features are locked onto the newer devices, despite the last generation being more than capable. Sadly, this is a trend far too many manufacturers are so quick to adopt. :(
That's been Apple's business model since forever. No hardware reason to upgrade? Just lock the software
I'm obsessed with your working space. My style also leans towards dark natural tones, softer lighting and clean tech so I think we have a ton in common there!
Nice to see you! I watch your content! And thanks - the grounded/natural tones are great with some white here and there for contrast. I pretty much steal from photography/entrepreneur youtubers like Oliur, Karl Conrad, Parker Walbeck, 30x40 Design, Justin Tse etc.
@@ergojosh Hello. What is that iPad stand that you're using?
@@alexanderyurchenko9445 I think it's a custom job there ,nevertheless it's kinda unique to be honest
@@alexanderyurchenko9445 i found it. The exact model of that stand :)
@@oniking7460 So what is it?
Great Job Josh, the Studio Looks Awesome man, you’ve come a long way, Looking forward to continue following you on your fantastic Successful and Inspiring Artistic Journey. The color combo with the shirt bouncing off the colors on your iPad was a nice touch.
you got that butter voice. i’m so relaxed 😅
That soft lighting!! 😘😘😘😘omggg
My girl got me one and it’s awesome. I’m old school paper pencil drawer and this thing is nuts. Pretty cool
This video is SUCH a mood! Love it!
thank you for this Josh, really helped me a lot. 🥰
Thank you so much for the info! Super helpful ❤ I’m hoping to save up for one!
Thank you for the video!!! Now I definitely do not regret that I ordered this particular iPad model. Thank you soooooo much~~~💚
I learn a lot from watching you, Marc Brunet, Adam Duff, and a handful of others. When Adam made a video gushing about how much of a difference the m2 made to his painting and recommended it when he found out Artstation supported hover I was tempted. Then I got a large work bonus so decided to upgrade my 2021 pro to the current model and damn, he wasn't wrong. And now that Procreate also has updated, yes, this is wonderful. I have autism/adhd and there's a time limit on how long I can function when I sit down to paint. Usually I'm lucky if I can sit still and focus for 2 hours once a week to practice before mentally becoming overwhelmed and exhausted. The features of hover honestly made a HUUUUUGE impact on that. Being able to see what I'm doing and control things so much more freely drastically cuts out a ton of mentally taxing behaviors and quirks in my normal painting that I was able to keep working for several hours this past week. It was worth every penny.
That's really good to know!! I also have autism and adhd, as well as ME/CFS. So I have a lot of physical and cognitive limitations. Anything that can reduce mental load is so worth it to me! I'm really considering upgrading to the M2 ipad for this reason.
Great tips. Thanks for sharing Josh
Can't wait to get this, already placing an order
Just got this , really exited to some painting and sketching on my iPad Pro.
The new gesture features might be the game changer for me. I haven't been working with an ipad because I need my quick keys (keyboard) for brush resize.
Thanks so much. I might one day want an M2 rig when and if Procreate builds pigment mixing into the software. Got my eye on Rebelle right now but there's no iPad version. This lets us blend paint just like the real thing, meaning blue+yellow equals green (rather than the current grey mush).
why not just....pick a green
すげえカッコいい絵やな。
THE video I’ve been waiting for - a huge thank you!
Hahaha no problem! Ive enjoyed your multiple videos on the topic! Hopefully more industrial designers/engineers are inspired to make more improvements.
Been rocking a 10.5 2017 ipad pro for all of my drawing and procreate needs but i can't wait to upgrade to the 12.9 M2 for all the new features and bigger screen!!!!
I have the 2021 12.9 M1 Pro and woke up to the 5.3 update so confused bc the cursors looks weird. Took me a while to realize I never actually used cursors in the first place lol. So basically there’s no point of me updating to the M2 thank god. Cursor’s actually get in the way of me painting. And I have pinch to zoom on so the size and opacity finger shortcut would get in the way as well
Yeah for hover and the possibilities of the M2 chip. The hover makes it easier to accurately place detail. Less guesswork.
Thanks! I still have my first ipad pro 2015 and i am fine using it. The new apple pencile upgrade is huge its all i want actually to have a full experience with procreate
Im a student studying concept art. I've been saving money from my part-time waitering gig for over a year and a half and Im gonna buy myself an Ipad pro as a gift to myself for my 20th. I'm so stoked to get it. I've wanted a truly remarkable portable drawing expirience since the last ipad I had, an ipad 4. Tbh I know that the tools dont make the artist and Im fortunate enough to have been able to buy myself an intuos back in 2017 and then a huion kamvas in 2020 so in truth I dont really need an ipad but I know it's something that ive wanted for such a long time and it sounds silly but ik it would make the tech and art geek child that I was and still am smile from ear to ear. Always used to draw hanging upside down on a couch or on my bed with my dogs so not having to be confined to my desk Im rlly excited to be able to work on assignments and just draw while being around my fam. I know this is such waffle but ive been following your channel for a while and love your content. It felt like the right page to get all gushy about it on XD. Keep making Josh's proud everywhere!
I am also an art/animation student, planning to buy an ipad pro for a very long while like you. I also do have a drawing tablet (huion kamvas 13 if ur wondering). When I got accepted to uni I had one chance to get a device to work on and I choosed huion, even tho I was planning to buy an ipad all that time. [ I got too excited because it was gonna be my first drawing device so I suddenly choosed huion] and ended up regreting for a whole year. Now I finally got another chance to get an ipad before our economy gets ruined completely. And I also feel so happy thinking about how I will be able to bring my ipad to the village house and will be able to draw in the garden. Drawing stuff based on the insects and plant I see around. Congrats with your new device!
Glad I’ve stuck with my 2018 iPad so far, but I definitely want to save up for this new one it looks amazing and with all the updates from the M2 to procreate and the “hover” function I feel like I could create faster / more efficiently ✨
What’s wrong with 2020 model?
How's your 2018 model holding up after almost 5 years now? And how much do you regularly use it? I want to save up for the new model but I need to know that they last at least a solid 5 years and I won't have to keep upgrading every 3 years or so...
I also have a 2018 iPad. For me it has lasted very well. It doesn’t have all the new features like hover, but it definitely still functions very well! The battery life has gotten decent but it getting worse is bound to happen overtime
aside from filling up the (maximum option) storage with screenshots like a dummy, mine has held up pretty great :-) battery life is starting to be a bit finicky this year, but had zero issues prior! plus i just really like having a home button ^_^’ my classmates with newer models do sorta miss plugging in their pencils too, even if slapping it magnetically on the side looks cool.
@@silverblaize have an older iPad Air that’s a 2019 model and it still works fine, when I have a heavy load on it, sometimes clip studio paint will crash, but at the time I also got an iPad with less storage too which I think plays a roll. I got it on sale during the middle of the pandemic so I could draw in the park or in bed.
I would love a pro for the bigger screen and the magnet pencil, but it functions for now. I have a main pc I use too and a large drawing tablet for that, but I find the iPad is just easier, higher resolution and better colors.
6:25 that's kinda wild, also the only thing I really wanted is for them to allow to us to draw guides within ref images
Hello just found your channel. Hate to say this but I wish I could go back to version 5.2. Reason for me is the color drop tool has removed the Continue filling with re colour option after you use the tolerance. It was great using the crosshair and the old mini floodfill. Hoping Savage will add this back!
The old iPad I got in 2019 (iPad 6th gen) finally died on me 2 weeks ago. I had been struggling to create more detailed art on larger canvas sizes because the old A10 chip couldn't handle it, still for some reason, I couldn't justify upgrading to an iPad pro because I felt I could keep pushing through and save money. when it died I finally decided it was time for an upgrade and got the 2022 iPad pro 11" . so far its an AMAZING experience ! I can not stress how the M2 chip is perfect for artist, if you can upgrade I highly recommended you do because you won't regret it!
Thanks for sharing, super cool =)
Cool feature. But with someone with the 2020 iPad this is just not a worthy enough feature to warrant the upgrade, maybe the next one.
How do ypu think should I buy iPad pro 2020 or 2022 version in 2024?
amazing video thank you
Thanks, Josh. Thanks for the warning about older procreate app not being able to read 5.3 procreate.
The Apple Pencil Hoover is only on the iPad Pro 11 and 12.9 M2 versions, the difference is the 12.9 is heavier, has a brighter and larger display for $300 more.
Finally hover .. tempted to upgrade from my 2018 pro but damn the 20% price hikes in Europe make that a hard sell
Hover alone is not worth the upgrade IMO. However, I just upgraded from a 2018 12.9 pro to the 2022 12.9 and by far for me the best feature is it has more RAM and I believe apps can now use empty space as VRAM. The result is that you get significantly more layers in Procreate. I work in 11x14" 300ppi quite a bit and on my 2018 (512GB) I believe I was getting approx 30-32 (ish) layers. (I can't recall exact). On the 2022 M2 1TB that same file size gives me 131 layers! That was worth the upgrade for me.
why am i watching this video i literally draw in my sketchbook with a number two pencil josh you got me again!
I'm still waiting for the next gen pro (I have a 2020 model right now) because I really like the hover functionality, but that's pretty much the only reason to get this version ipad pro and I wanna see what next gen also brings!
Same I'm hoping for an updated pencil maybe, or something a bit more substantial. I have the 2020 as well :3
you might get lucky and get an Oled screen or a landscape facing camera. I don't think any of that is gonna be as game changing for artists as the hover function. They can't really add much else at this point.
@@chancemcgee5731 Yeah I kinda figured that. Only thing would be updating the pencil which I'm sure won't be backwards compatible lol. We can hope they come up with something though.
@@chancemcgee5731 Yeah the only appreciable thing I can see them doing with the next gen is eliminating the bad backlight ghosting/bleeding issues with the variable dimming zones. (Something the M2 Macbooks don't suffer from despite using the same exact tech.)
Are these updates for procreate available for the older iPads? It not it’s not a big deal as I use CSP for my main refining software and procreate for laying out and finalizing sketches. Love that color drop feature that’s what I love about CSP and the vector lines. I would do more full renders in procreate but my iPad doesn’t have enough storage 😞
Nice art
I’m loving the new updates tbh
To see my artworks flashing even if its just a second over the screen of one of ergo joshes videos, is just insane
Time stamp???

I like ur voice it’s so beautiful
The price of this ipad is literally our entire year of grocery Q-Q
Thank you!! I had turned off hover as I found it annoying. I didn’t know half of what it could do.
I wonder if you can make a video for the best settings for pro-create that would be really nice :) !!
you are really great, keep up! What app do you use for gathering references?
I believe I’ll own my iPad Pro gen 3 until its dying days since it’s been so useful. Yet when the day comes where I will need a new ipad, this is definitely going to be useful.
Continue filling is a life saver.
Not sure if you have not mentioned the wooden sketchboard because you will make a video in the future about it but Josh I am dying to know where you got it or when it is going to be available!
I'm curious about this too. I have the old one but the wooden one looks nice 😀
Same here. He is probably waiting for review after using for a period of time.
i think its the sketchslate!
Its called the sketchslate! Its unfortunately not quite enough to make a dedicated video about it.
@@ergojosh Ah I see! What a shame cause it looks quite promising. Thanks anyway dude :)
Im not a Procreate user myself (yet), i hope Adobe Fresco will implement this hover feature soon too. It will be interesting to see the progress of those two but also other digital artist apps on iPad. Josh what is your opinion in Fresco as of now especially compared to Procreate?
Ive been sleeping on Fresco, its definitely my top 3 for the ipad. It has potential to surpass Procreate in a few years imo if Adobe continues to take it seriously.
I like all the features in the iPad and how to paint in procreate, do you have a video using Clip Studio Paint?
Damn, your voice is lit my dudes
Im fine with my M1 ipad pro. Though honestly the main star of this video is *Hands* that Josh always has on as a guest in his videos.
Great info! Wondering if you get more layers in Procreate with this newest iPad Pro?
I love the new iPad Pro. Even though procreate is much better with the 5.3 update it’s still a little glitchy but apparently they are working on a bug fix update.
I’m looking to move from traditional to digital and most likely will be the new iPad Pro 2022. I’m curious on how people find the 12.9” in size? Is the screen big enough and comfortable to work on?
There’s rumours of a 14/16” iPad next year so I’m torn between getting the 12.9” now or waiting for the bigger models next year.
Any input would be great! Thanks
Some say that the 11" is perfect for mobility. But like Brad calbow a UA-camr that reviews tech for artists said- artists need the storage and the screen size, anything else is just little gimmicks of personal preference. I have a 9th gen iPad 256gb" and I have enough storage but i need more ram and would love a bigger screen. I am torn between the current 12.9 M2 1tb storage or a possible 14.1/16" inch ipad pro. So I'll wait for next year's October event 😁 you should check out Brad's latest videos on how it's his experience of 4 years everyday drawing on iPad pro 12.9 2018 and top drawing tablets of 2022. If you don't want to spend that much currently the M1 iPad air 256gb of storage is the best value. 😁
Watching this on my M1 IPad Pro 😁
Adoro ver esses vídeos gringos porque a maioria dos brasileiros não vivem nem perto de comprar um desses kk
Hey Josh, I was thinking of buying an ipad pro (first time ipad user) for illustration work and animation once "procreate dreams" comes out but Im having a problem deciding between 8gb of ram or 16gb ram ipad. Storage isn't a big deal since you can add external drives but the ram has me guessing because I never had an ipad so I have no way of comparing it.. And I cant really pick between 512gb or 1tb version for that reason should I save up to get 16 ram one or just go for 512gb (8gb ram)?
I get a lot of jittering while doing inclined straight lines, I think it is because the screen protector. I know this is a known issue, but would like to know what type of screen protector u use (if so). Thanks for the great content!
I think ergo uses paperlike.
@@nickbates4407 thanks!
Can you tell us where you got this working surface where you've put in you ipad? It's seems like a great tool!
So iPad pro is a good device for doing animation art ?
I wanna start back drawing art .
I was looking for the 2021 (M1) cause I thought it was pretty much the same with little less. this kinda changed my mind to get the (M2) instead
Dude. You should do audiobooks 😉
Hi guys! Quick question! Is 128gb enough for an ipad pro? Recently purchased the new ipad pro 11" with 128 gb of storage and just now I'm asking myself if it's enough. My plan is to mainly sketch on the ipad, then transfer those sketches on the pc and work from there, so no complicated paintings or anything. I know that the bigger the better, but I'm also trying to stay relatively low on the budget. Thanks!
Imho that's good already since you'll be mainly using pc
If you are drawing so much that you fill up a 128gb tablet, then you are probably going to be a professional artist at that point and can afford whatever tools you need for your career. I highly doubt you'll come close to using even 5 GB in procreate.
where did you get that ipad drawing board? ive been looking around online for that dark wood style you have but i cant find any
It’s called “thesketchslate”
After this do think its still necessary to work on a big wacom? 😮
great tutorial. Just got the iPad pro do i need the screen protector?
To anyone out there with the 2018 iPad Pro like me, I just want to reiterate that it is possible to build a very successful art career with that tablet. It uses the apple pencil generation 2 which is of huge importance to me. Beyond that the only thing I'm missing is the much larger layer count which would be nice.
And it got the iPadOS 17 update!
is there any specific dictionary for procreate brush settings? i love how fluid and efficient the app to control, except brush settings, 5months still can't even slightly replicate my csp brushes
I have to say this feature is really nice and too bad I am on a M1 chip. I don't know if i am going to change my Ipad juste for it though.
That ipad stand looks nice ! Do we have any info on that ?
Hi Ergo, can you advise if Procreate 5.3 has a background removal feature other than erasing. Many thanks.
Can I get a link to that dope ass ipad desk case? or stand? That is so good. I need something like that for my desk.
hey, your vid was super helpful. do you have affiliate links for your drawing glove or pencil grip?
I was wondering of you could tell me where to find the larger glove? I am striking out.
Hey Bro!!! Where did you get your sketchboard? It looks like the Sketchboard Pro from Brain Tree but yours is wood and looks very steardy. Did you have it made (if so, where?) but if you bought it please let us know. I need one like that
It’s called “thesketchslate”
@@TheTreehouseFamily Thanks a lot, Bro

I love that drawing table you are using for the ipad where can i buy that for my son? also whats the best ipad for drawing? i want to get my son an upgrade for xmas :) he draws a lot i want a good one
Josh. How many layers 5400 x 6000 with 300 dpi ,can you create on this iPad ?
@ergojosh - What is the pencil grip you use? Can you still dock this up top and have it charge?
thanks dude
First time here and excellent video. What is the brand/make for your ipad stand/mount/frame?
I've had a 2020 ipad pro since it came out and I was kinda disappointed with this update-- I understand the hover technology is only in the new m2 devices, so it's physically impossible for the older models to get this feature, however they didn't really give anything to the rest of us in this update which was kind of surprising imo. Tbh all i got this update were a bunch of workflow breaking bugs like issues with liquify and palm rejection issues, random crashes, etc. Thankfully they fixed the liquify and crash issue, but still experiencing the palm rejection issues with no new features at all was pretty disappointing. 😭
Dohreccomendto buy 2020 version in 2024?
Your “stand” for your iPad Pro looks cool and really tailored for drawing…. Is it a custom made stand?
It’s the sketchslate pro :)
What stand are you using for the iPad Pro? I just bought one and am looking at all the options.
What is your opinion on the latest version of Adobe Fresco in comparison to Procreate?
I am looking to upgrade to the M2 Pro and get back into illustrating. I like the connectivity of Fresco as I am a big Adobe user for my graphic design work, but want to ensure I’m not missing out by not using Procreate instead.
Can you sync your work with Adobe Fresco to photoshop or any other software on MacBook as I'm doing graphic design too
So smudge hasn't been fixed and still sucks? Did they fix tracking of apple pencil? I get better accuracy on a cheap 13 xppen gen2 screen
Kinda sad I can't hook this up to an external monitor and no longer have to look down at the iPad. Basically treat it like a pen tablet. Yes hover kinda gets me there, but just showing where the pen is at _all_ times would be the game changer.
Yeah that would have been nice to see it across the entire UI, not just the canvas.
Hi! Love ur artworks❤
Sorry do you recommend 11 inch of 2022 version over 12.9 2021?
Kinda struggling between size and features
11 inch is lighter and easier to draw in your lap. My husband has the 12.9 and with a case on it, it's just too heavy and clunky for me. But then again I'm 5'4 so maybe if you're a bigger person in general, get the 12.9
@@JessiDeerSims thank you so much❤

Hi , is it possible to pair an apple Magic Trackpad with procreate and use it as a second touch input device. For an example can you double tap to undo on the trackpad instead of the ipad pro screen?.
It is the year 2023 an the iPad finally has hover. lmao. I was disappointed when the Ipad Pro 2019 lacked that feature compared to my Wacom bamboo from 2008.
Hello. I would like to ask one general question about Procreate on the latest iPads Pro. Does it happen that long strokes with a complex brush (with intricate texture and physics or blend mode) are drawn slowly (that is, the CPU “thinks” about them for a long time)?
is that a sketchboard pro?
where do you got the deers in your set up?
Just like good old wacom emr - and it's great news
