This isn’t a hardware review channel, but the perspective I can offer is that of an artist who has been using the iPad Pro for 10 years now for my professional illustration work.
With the announcement of new M4 iPad Pros fresh in mind, I want to both look at what seems to be new with the latest models and how that affects you- while also looking at the state of viability for the iPad as of 2024, if you want to be making stuff on it. 2D, 3D, and animation.

The thinness is part of thermal management. If it was thicker, we’d see thermal throttling having to be done, along with other negatives, so I think they made the right choice. As it is, the battery on the 13” is already higher capacity than previous models.

Definitely nice to hear an artist's take on stuff like this. I do want to note something. I use CSP for my art and while yes they did start a subscription model, you CAN still buy it once and not pay another cent, and UNLIKE Adobe, you don't need a constant internet connection to use it. While I'm not thrilled CSP started a subscription model, again, you CAN still buy CSP once and never again, you just get the newest features sooner via the sub model, once you go from full version to full version it's the same as before. It's also usable on the iPad, too, and as Brookes said, your familiarity with your tools can often supersede any notable improvements elsewhere. I've used CSP ever since I went digital 4 years ago and despite going the sub model, as long as you can buy it outright and can wait on new features between full versions, it's my main program for the foreseeable future.
I know another artist who had the same assumption, and I while I don't comment here as much as I'd like, I wanted to set the record straight on this front. IMHO, CSP is still an ETERNITY better than Adobe, esp. for non-iPad users like me.
On that front, part of why I've wanted an iPad for years is because I wanted to try Procreate after hearing so many great things about it here and from other artists I know, so a desktop ver. would certainly be nice for those of us who can't yet make the investment in an iPad and all you'll need for it to just draw.
I just started getting into animation myself, but I'm merely testing the waters, freelance digital art is my main focus right now, and while skill matters WAY more than tools, tools are cool and can help to some extent.

I come from the PC side and CSP is my software of choice, bought an iPad for the sake of Procreate but... I didn't like it haha.
PC spoiled me so bad with the UI, keyboard shortcuts and 16inch display tablet. Procreate, sadly is too minimalist for my taste, the stabilizer felt way different from what I'm used to and lack of hovering throws me so bad.
My hot take, Procreate carries the iPad so hard. Infinite Painter and CSP simple mode have been doing an amazing job in my iPad.
If you ask me, I'd personally look into the Android side. Banger screen, can use any stylus, desktop UI (only Samsung as far as I'm aware) and on top of that you can connect it to a new dedicated display tablet thanks to USB-C.

The Apple Pencil Pro thankfully works on the new Air. Though it really depends on what specs you need.
My biggest concern is heat given that I do a lot with 3d and such, and the M2 iPad Pros overheated horribly.
The reason the Pencil Pro isn't backward compatible was that the camera repositioning required a redesign of the magnetic charging/linking function in both the tablet and pencil.

They said something along the lines of "they are moving one-step closer to the ipad becoming a magical pane of glass." To which I add "that we will undoubtedly put in a big chunky case in order to protect it for when we inevitably DROP our expensive investment."
The layer limit in Procreate has more to do with RAM than it does with processing power. Even the old M1 chips are more than capable of running Procreate, Dreams, and even Fresco buttery smooth while reaching their respective layer limits. It really has very little to do with the M4 chip.
The reason the Pencil Pro isn't compatible with the old M2 models is because to add the haptic feedback in it and re-position the camera to the long side of the ipad, they had to move the charging magnets in the ipad itself. The new pencil will not connect appropriately to the old ipads and the old pencils will not attach to the new ipads appropriately either. However, I wonder if the only caveat to the new pencil on the old ipad is that it charges slightly off-center or does it just not charge at all? If it is just an aesthetic issue, I can live with it if it means I can have rotation in my pencil, especially when my clunky Logitech case has a nice thick strap to hold it in place.

Left Apple last month but miss Procreate so much as Android art apps S****! Was thinking about getting another iPad just to go back to Procreate. HATED everything I saw in the announcement show for the new iPads. A lot of stuff (and fluff) not many want, like thinness, Personally I think the last iPads were thin enough. Apple stop trying to make the iPads disappear!. The colors in the ad were all horrible. Wat is with that ugly tube thing on the backs (I'm sure it was just visual but ugly). The crushing of all those objects (ya I get it) but was just stupid. The whole event was horrible and possible the only interesting thing worth anything was the new pencil pro (they could have just sold that to use with past iPad pros) NOT going to spend $$$$$ for an Ipad that basically has nothing going for it. Ya sure m4...but who cares as the m2&3 are fast enough for a tablet. I really wish I had kept my iPad pro because Apple just seems to be losing their minds and it's so obvious they have nothing innovated or worth the prices anymore. One last thing, How about doing something most want like a full blown IOS on the Pro's! Or an option like Samsung has with Dex.

a couple of years ago I decided to get a Microsoft surface book instead of an Ipad pro. price-wise the ipad was cheaper so I really considered it as a portable option and tested the one a friend had for a couple of hours to see if I liked it.
I decided on the surface because it had a keyboard in the price, I am used to office and know the programs I am using work on it and I don't have to relearn keyboard short cuts. hand gestures are mostly a cause of frustration, I prefer to press a physical button. so it was mostly that I was too lazy to change my entire work flow just to use this device.
I was a bit disappointed by the apple pencil because painting in procreate wasn't nearly as intuitive and "plug and play" as I was used from my pen display and graphic tablet on my desktop. You had to fiddle with the brush to make it even draw a line properly, like the pen pressure was wacky. that has been years though and since it's probably been updated a lot seeing how many professionals use it.
the layer limit also put me off because i easily get into 50-100 layers on a bigger piece, so hearing that this is fixed I might try apple again.
not a big fan of the trend to make tech as thin and light as possible, I don't know who the market is for that either tbh. I mean it's nice that they are nit as heavy as the laptops from the early 2000s because that was a lot of weight and space in your backpack, but I don't necessarily need my drawing device to be lighter than my sandwich.
I am clumsy. things fall, I shove stuff in my bag carry them around...I don't such an expensive device bend out of shape because the backpack was standing next to the heater.

The Pencil thing is actually a technical limitation. They moved the front camera to the landscape side, which is where a lot of the sensors and magnets were previously located to store and charge the pencil. That's why they had to be spread further apart, to make space for the webcam to sit in between. The magnets in the new one therefore don't match the old iPads positions anymore - kind of a bummer because I'd love to just get the new Pencil, but you can still rotate the pencil via brush stroke flow and achieve pretty much the same results, its just a bit more finicky but no reason to buy another 1.3k tablet :D anyways, great video!

The two biggest misses for me that Apple did from an artists perspective, was as you mention, the thickness are lack thereof. The Pencil improvements are lacking. If they integrated a form of EMR so it doesn’t need to charge and added an eraser, it would have been a lot more exciting. The squeeze I’m expecting will distract when I’m just holding the pencil tight, so like tap in gonna disable it. The haptic thing will be distracting.
With animation, I feel too many people are sleeping on RoughAnimator, as it’s just so basic and intuitive, and it just has what you need for brainstorming. Then Callipeg is basically a TVpaint alternative at this point. Toonsquiq is also another good one.

I agree with you about how thin this thing is.. my new 13" pro has a flex when on a flat surface and I'm typing on the screen - doesn't make me feel confident about my purchase. The real problem I have with this is Apple could have put 5 or more different features, or improved features into this iPad BEFORE worrying about how thin it is. It just isn't something anyone really wanted. I would have rather had a 20% larger battery, or more options for grips/tips with the Apple Pencil, better speakers, larger screen option!!, or software enhancements. But how thin it is? I never once thought yeah "hope the new iPad is as thin as 4 credit cards" - I don't understand Apple 90% of the time. I really don't. Probably why the iPad is the only Apple product I have these days.

The cheapest 13" iPad Pro + Apple Pencil combo (without keyboard) is getting DANGEROUSLY close to Cintiq Pro 24 prices, so there's literally no reason to get it if you're working on professional work unless just like buying Apple tech because reasons, nothing against that if it works for you, but iPadOS is a joke until this day.
It's already more expensive than the Cintiq 16, Cintiq 22, the new Wacom Movink 13, a plethora of Huion/XP-Pen tablets and even Galaxy Tab Ultras. Even a cheap Windows PC/laptop can run illustration apps like Clip Studio and it's something that majority of the world own so there's VERY few reasons to buy these overpriced Apple devices.

Where exactly did you get the info that the 2nd gen Apple pencil is working with the M4? I found some info saying the opposite:
The second generation Apple Pencil is not compatible with the just-announced new iPad Pro M4 models.
The front camera and FaceID sensor array have been relocated from the short-edge to the long-edge of the iPad - such that the camera and sensor array are now positioned top-centre of the screen when the iPad is positioned in Landscape orientation. As such, the camera/sensor array now occupy the internal cavity previously used for the second generation Pencil's inductive pairing/charging system.
To accommodate this change, the charging system for the Apple Pencil has been completely redesigned - moving the associated electronics to different cavity locations along the top edge of the iPad chassis. The new Apple Pencil Pro has been specifically designed to accommodate the new physical architecture.
As such, the second generation Pencil is incompatible with the new iPad's Pro. Similarly, the new Apple Pencil Pro is also incompatible with earlier models of iPad Pro.
Unless it's only info about charging the pencil

This Ipad isn't anything special than the previous generation, and now that apple has clearly expressed interest in AI this just leaves a sour taste in artist mouth. This is such a sensitive time where artist are advocating for legislation and not being replaced with AI and here comes another company wanting to sell us a tablet with generative AI features. Like no. We shouldn't tolerate that, The price point and the AI bullshit.
Artist already have to spend so much money on industry standard software that this is just another slap in the face. A pc with a basic drawing tablet is so much cheaper than this one tablet. Hell even buying older ipads are better than this.
