To recolor (the last tip in this video) there’s another way too. I use it ALL the time.
You can go to the third menu on the top row (the S shaped one) and select automatic select and select the area you want to recolor. You can even copy that into a new layer and work with it as much as you like and then completely delete it if you don’t like it, blend it, lower its opacity etc. It’s way easier than the quick menu in my opinion.
Ohh, that’s an interesting approach. Thanks for sharing!
Dynamic brush scaling and Recolor are GAME CHANGERS ! I've been annoyed by those two aspects on a project I'm working on and this will make my workflow so much better ! Thank you !
I’m glad it helped!
It's for fine detail work wrinkles shadows
That trick for more layers is actually genius.
Another tip: for fine-tuning slider and handle amounts (like in brushes, tolerance, select and move, or liquify, etc.) while holding your pencil on the screen, move the pencil away from the handle or slider in a 90° angle and the further away you move it from the interface element, the slower the amount will increase or decrease.
how do i postrize in procreate the image please
@@hippolytanine2852 I don't know what that is. Do you mean posterize? The only way I know how to do that is in Photoshop because it is a built in filter Adobe owns. Procreate does have gradient maps under the effects menu (magic wand). You can duplicate an existing map, then tap the gradient itself at the bottom of the screen and set your own colors and tones. It will then use the value (intensity of dark vs light) in the selected layer (so if you want to do the whole image you need to duplicate the canvas into it's own layer) and use the colors in the gradient map. Hope that helps!
wow 🤯this one’s crazy!!
Omg! I didn’t know that’s what Dynamic Brush Scaling was for and I’ve been wanting that forever! It’s incredible how much is hiding in Procreate no matter how much you use it.
Great tips!
There’s yet *another* way to recolor, and that’s by dropping the color swatch somewhere and then holding the pen somewhere, then drag sideways to adjust the amount of tolerance.
Why are procreate tutorials so damn satisfying? Not to mention the Apple Pencil tapping stuff. So clean, so snappy, so cerebral… Procreate is literally the best designed, most intuitive, smoothest drawing program I have ever used. It’s like butter.
Tapping? Maybe I should do some iPad/Procreate ASMR vids lol
Dynamic brush scaling.. thank u! I feel like it’s gonna take my sketches to the next level. More intuitive than resizing..
Give it a try!
@@jaywalkerpictures I just starting using this myself and it feels so much more intuitive for my work flow!
I probably would use it but i have a problem of zooming In to much 😭
Thank you!! Your explanation of dynamic brush scaling was awesome. I knew what it did but never understood its relevance.
Yeah at first it seemed useless but once u try in practice it’s very handy :)
Wow that Dynamic Brush and Recolour will change a lot for the future, I thank you humbly for that.
As I was watching I realized you didn’t use the group flatten or adjustment on a group layer. What you can do is put everything in a group, click on the group layer and press adjustment and it will adjust everything in the group. To add that you can swipe right on a layer and select it (unlike the select option for the canvas but select the layer itself) from here you can select multiple layers and you have two options, delete all the selected layers or group them. If you group them then you can flatten the group just like merging them all together.
However don’t get carried away with this. If you use blending modes and merge two layers with separate blending modes, then you will lose all but one of the selected blending modes, really ruining your layer. You should only merge layers of the same blending mode
Also Instead of pressing gallery to rotate the canvas … you could … just … rotate the canvas by pinching and turning it with your fingers in the drawing 😅
Thank u for the tips , I still have a lot to learn too!
If you are out of layers (which is the point of that tip) you won’t be able to duplicate and then flatten
1. Private layer
2. Reference inlet
3. Perfect quick shapes
4. Dynamic brush size
5. Brush size preset
6. Brush pressure and smoothening
7. gestures (like scrub)
8. Bypassing Max layers using copy canvas
9. Copy canvas for adjustment layer
10. Recolor (through quick menu only )
When you copy canvas, you can paste immediately and it will be on a new layer automatically. No need to have one ready which it won’t copy to anyway.
Really solid tips, especially the dynamic brush one !
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Jay! The dynamic brush scaling is awesome; I didn’t know about that one!
Yeah it is super obscure & underrated, thanks for watching!
This was amazing. I’ve had mine for about 7 months and still learned something. You can merge multiple layers at the same time by tapping one layer then sliding on every layer you wanna merge (it’s either right or left I don’t remember). If correctly each layer will have a blue highlight. Then just pinch with two fingers. However this could take long since you have to select each one by swiping individually.
Yep that’s the problem, swiping them all takes a long time
Woooow the dynamic brush scaling was a life savour! I found it extremely annoying that it would always change size! Amazing video! Thank you😊
Happy to help thanks for watching ☺️
The copy layer trick can itself be used to replace the "merge all layer" you didn't find in your previous trick. Nice tips BTW!
My favorite tip for references is to have it on my phone next to the ipad
I’ve been using Sketchbook for two years and I’ve realized it wasn’t allowing me to continue to make my art better so I got procreate and this is very, very helpful! I’ll definitely keep this in my playlist that I send to people who needs art tips.
Thank you! Saving and sharing really helps the channel grow, much appreciated
I love this video I learned a lot! And comment section is full of golden nuggets
Thank you for watching!
i think dynamic brush scaling may have just changed my life 😭 i've been messing with the scale of brushes for ages down to changing the minimum sizes on a bunch of brushes. so glad there's a work around
So happy it helps, thanks for watching!
I’m just learning about using Procreate and found your video - I can’t wait to try some of these - thank you!
Thank you for watching, enjoy learning Procreate!
If you swipe left and select all layers you can merge them at once 🙂
wowow must be the first time I see another left-handed digital artist
Surprised by the scrub feature !! Hopefully it’ll save me some time hehe
Yeah it’s great!
Haha literally just last night I tried to do split screen view between Procreate and a reference image. Tips 1 and 2 is such a nicer solution.
Regarding the max layer part. I'm pretty sure you can move layers between artworks by holding them with one finger while navigating. This makes it easier if you are experimenting with several copies of a piece, and are confilicted with which changes to keep.
The merge hack irresistibly reminds me of "ping-ponging" audio tracks in the extremely old days of multitrack tape. The exact same tradeoffs in terms of committing to decisions/undoability, except of course there is no perceptible degradation of the merged result, at least to my eye. Interesting to me how certain procedural aspects of creativity can persist across media, tools and genres.
You can merge all at once by selecting all the layers by swiping to the right on each one, grouping them, then tapping to bring up the sub menu and flatten the group c:
Swiping on 100+ layers can be tiring. Thanks for watching!
You don’t have to back out to the gallery to rotate the canvas. You can do it with two fingers just like or while you are zooming/scrolling
I feel like people would abuse the private layer feature to trace and you wouldn’t see it in the timelapse
So many artist do this. Even with non digital media. You can play with the contrast and colors to make pre drawn outlines invisible on recorded media.
tracing is still art.
@@artbynieceykinzkeep convincing yourself 😬
Tracing has been used by both art students and professionals for hundreds of years.
Some of y’all really need to get off this “tracing is cheating” train.
If it’s utilized in art *theft* then it’s understandable (and expected) to frown upon it, but tracing as a learning tool or even compositional aid has been around and acceptable a lot longer than Procreate’s hidden layer.
This ignorance of the practice’s historical roots is why I guess colleges still insist on making art students sit through _Art History 100_ but clearly, some of us skipped classes…👀🫣😅
@@Moma_spam2tracing I believe is a tool for beginners, so they can understand how to draw a certain character per say. That’s how I started and now I can just draw it on my own, haven’t traced since may of last year on my phone lol
Love the tips. 🎉. Especially the private layers. Instead of merging all the layers use the copy canvas under the wrench, add… paste in new layer.
Super helpful video! Thanks so much for sharing 😊
Thank u for watching!
Loved you video so much I liked and subbed.
Just bought your brushes and I can't wait to use them. The steady inking brush is really great
Thank you so much, hope u enjoy the brushes!
Thank you 🙏 for the recolor option! Wow lol did not know about this very helpful option 🙂
Glad it was helpful!
Amazing! I thought i wouldn’t be surprised by any of the tips and tricks Procreate video, but this one is really good! Particularly the Dynamic Brush and Recolour!
Thank you! Procreate always has something new to learn
for the 2nd tip. i still prefer to keep another tab open in split screen rather than use the procreate reference. thats because i ususally use multiple references and it makes it easier to search on pinterest or google while drawing
The Reference option!
Which brush were you using for your sketches on the face? Amazing tips thank you!
It’s my own custom brush set. Thank you for watching!
@@jaywalkerpictures Of course! Thank you for taking the time to make great content! I feel like this will help give me and others a good start on the application!
Great video! So helpful!
Thanks for watching!
Your opening for this video is brilliant. A+ hook and so so simple 😂 Also, thanks for the actual useful tips!
Glad you can appreciate the edit ;) Thanks for watching!
Very well explained at an optimum speed, thank you 👏🙏
Awesome tips! The merge layer doesn't work very well when you apply a linear burn or screen for example.
Oh yeah be careful if you have blend modes applied
Thank you. This is so helpful.
Ive been using procreate for my digital art for multiple years now, and the reference feature has a pretty fatal flaw if you’re planning to use it for colour selection. It will desaturate every colour you pick, (on all colour profiles, yes I use rgb). I’ve found this is most obvious on super saturated colours.
I mostly use the reference layer for character reference sheets, and not being able to rely on the colours I select from the reference window really lowers its value to me
wow that is interesting, ill have to give it a try
You can select a group to merge all at once. Just put everything you want merged into a group together, then flatten the whole group in the layers menu.
Came here to say this!
Thank you for this. I think I nave about 50 hours of playing with Procreate ahead of me before I understand all these. But it's good to have this to refer to when I"m ready.
Thank you for watching 😊
Another tips for easier switch between brush, smudge and eraser.
1. Double tap your apple pen to change between brush and the eraser.
2. Turn on the gesture touch on the smudge, so every time you smudge the screen you’ll smudge your drawing carefull
This help me a lot to faster switching between thoose tools
Thanks for the tips!
Learning Procreate. EXCELLENT video! Thank you.
Thank you for watching
I was looking for a left handed artist who uses Procreate... and here you are.
Thank you so much! I just got an ipad for drawing and i've been wondering how artists do most of these things. This is extremelly helpful!
Glad it helped!
Happy I’m not the only left handed one to toggle right hand interface on lol
I’m right handed and use left interface. That way I can use my left hand to make adjustments while I draw with my right.
Left handers ftw!
@@jaywalkerpictures until you have to write on a white board, or with a pen that the ink takes a while to dry! lol but great video! it is crazy how at the surface procreate is so simple then you figure out its super powerful but everything is 2+ levels deep and you just need to know its there lol
OMG! You sir are a live saver! Instant sub! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thanks for subbing!
5:56 I like that dynamic brush
This is so helpful thank you very much
Thank you for watching
A quicker way of duplicate and merge is by exporting the canvas as jpeg or png, then on export options press 'copy', go back to the gallery, press +, and then clipboard
Ohh very interesting, thank you for the tip
Please I would like an honest answer. Which do you prefer. The m2 iPad Pro or the new one ? I would absolutely love a pro and con video comparison of your new iPad Pro and the old one. Honestly I think a video like that can get lots of views but also lots of people asking you more questions in the comments. These kind of videos are what a lot of people look for so much. Many many people are so indecisive about what iPad to get. People like to get advice and be told which iPad to go and purchase as many are confused. I hope you’ll give it some thought to make a video on your honest opinion between the iPads you have. Comparing the pros to one another. Comparing the new air and old air. Comparing all the models and the mini iPad you have
I only have the 2021 M1 (5th gen) - but if I were shopping now I would get the latest. Having said that, if u are on a budget the M2 is great and will serve your purpose for a long time.
That preset slider is great. Didnt know that one
bro, I don’t subscribe or comment ever but you deserved it!!!!!!!! ❤
Thank you!
Wow. Tip #10 will be so helpful. Thank-you!
Glad it helped, thank you for watching!
Hi Jay,
Don’t know if this is the place to ask questions, but here goes…
Is there a way to create gradients? Particularly for objects. I just thought you might have a tip or trick that would help. I want to draw Faeries with translucent wings, coloured with different shades. Thank you. 🥰
Not that I know of, I make them manually using the airbrush. Definitely a feature I wish they’d add
@@jaywalkerpictures thank you. I hadn’t thought of the airbrush. I’ll give it a burl. 🤩
@@jaywalkerpicturesme again. Sorry. Promise I won’t harass you too much. 😊
Would you be able to do a video on how to create a gradient. That would be brilliant. Thank you. 🥰
There will be a video coming out in a few days - it's a long tutorial for a landscape piece, but in it I do a gradient the manual way using the soft airbrush. Stay tuned!
@@jaywalkerpictures awesome. Thank you. Sounds great. 🤩
Yet more hidden tips to be learned… wow, Thanks!
This is random, but we’re both left-handed artists called Jay. Anyway, it’s funny that you’re smart and edited your interface so the brush sizing is on the right. I just got used to adjusting it using the Apple Pencil instead of my fingers so now the interface for lefties feels weird to me haha
Well just do what feels right for you (pun intended lol) And hey another lefty Jay, thanks for watching!
I’m confused by what you said about brush size being 10% of the canvas size, wouldn’t that mean at 100% it would fill the screen?
I always thought it was dependent on the brush settings. Some brushes will fill the canvas, others not so much, and it’s also made more complex by the pressure settings in the brush studio.
Really helpful video! I just think the brush sizes is a little more complex than just being a percentage of the canvas.
I was going off what was stated in the procreate handbook but you are right, the individual brush settings are a factor too - I might have to revisit this in a future video
Thank you
Thank you!
You’re welcome!
really helpful thankyou so much
Thank you for watching
thank you. very helpful info.
For the LayerLimit "Hack": Instead of copying the file and merging all the layers by hand, just export a jpg or something similar (check file compression) and then import it again as a new file and you save yourself the time. Also it flattens all the layerstyles (which could be a problem when you merge single layers only a few at a time)
Great video! Thank you!
Thank you for watching!
Yo just started drawing in procreate aswell, your video was the first tutorial i got, thank you for the tips man. Fuck yeah
No problem, enjoy drawing!
Great video and tips - thanks 😁
Thanks for watching!
Great Info, THANKS! 💚💙💜
Select all and merge no… but
Go to the wrench copy canvas
And make new canvas paste.
Van you do one with rokoko please ?
Is „Copy Canvas“ a quick way to merge all layers?
Yep it is
Thanks!
No problem!
Great video, thanks! I have this menu on the left bottom side of the canvas "redo, undo move, zoom fit on canvas" and I don't know how to close it! Can you help?
Go to your iPad settings > Procreate app > toggle off Single Touch Gestures Companion. Thank you for watching :)
extremely useful
Great tips
Glad you like them!
Isn’t the flipping canvas horizontally under the wrench in the canvas option?😅
Very cool tips indeed
Glad you think so!
Tip 5 a game changer. Thanks so much.
Most excellent
Brilliant!
Cool tips, especially10.
Hey, thanks!
Dynamic brush scaling off makes no sense to me. Procreate's % size is not calculate based on the canvas, but the min and max size defined in the brush settings, which in turn relate to the used tip form.
Ill be honest i find the lack of tools underwhelming on procreate
I still orefer Photoshop by far...desk top version as ipad version has too many features i use missing compared to desktop
Agree procreate can seem ‘lite’ but for the price vs photoshop I can’t complain
Hi at 12:53 how to import the individual element/layer to the other canvas?
Witch best iPad for drawing 11inch or 13 inch?
I think bigger is better, so 13
15:52 10 last thing (i need if recoloring end stuff cool feature}
the copy canvas 'feature' is the reason why procreate will never work for me.
applying adjustments to multiple layers without merging is fundamental in digital painting
thank you
You're welcome
You only need one tip to procreate
Can the reference be used with an external Monitor ?
The private layer itts gonna safe all of us that use others pples work as reference or inspiration while learning and you be pround of ur drawing( DOSENT LOOK LIKE THE INSPIRATION OR AS A COPY) and then someone be like that isnt original let me see the video and then you show them and just bc you coppied 1 circle they say its coppy ( They dont even draw a stick man)
How to hide in procreate pocket please tell me
Can you please explain what alpha lock is?
When locked you can only paint within the boundaries of any existing paint that has been applied to that layer. Hope that makes sense :)
@@jaywalkerpicturesyes thank you.
Is it tracing if I’m looking at art work and copying it lmao I’ve been doing that and getting better but now I don’t know lmao
I would say it’s definitely not tracing, but it’s also not the best idea especially if you’re posting it somewhere, but it is a good way to look at pose references for practice. a way you could still get the same practice while not having that risk of art theft is using actual photos as references.
