Android developer here 😊 one of the most common reasons tablet versions of apps looks like a hot mess is a two-fold problem. Previously it was kind of a pain in the butt for android to make good tablet layouts, the tooling for developers was just subpar when compared to iOS and their constraint system. With jetpack compose in android, this is actually much less of an issue. Google is also pushing developers more to support aspect agnostic layouts because there is a rise in foldable devices, and they suffer when apps are poorly designed for a flexible experience. The second half of the problem is lack of buy in from leadership on supporting android devices. The absolute best thing you can do to get a better tablet experience is complain and send feedback on these apps to those companies so they know people actually care about it.
I think Google sees foldables as the next big thing similar to phablets becoming the majority. Saw in Mkbhd video that Google is going to give more visibility to Tablet optimised apps in Play store. THAT'S HUGE. Not to mention Android L, Pixel Fold, Pixel Tab, Samsung's work in tablet space. I believe big screen Android is getting even more better in very near future
@lasue7244 100%, I'm good friends with one of the Google engineers working to bring better support to large screen devices and that's one of the biggest selling points to companies: visibility
I'm a professional Artist and i confirm that the drawing experience in the S9 ultra has no match. You are not límited to a single pencil, i can use the wacom ones and the bigger screen is amazing.
I was literally just jumping down here to say this. I have the s-pen with me at all times, but when I sit down intentionally to draw, I actually use the pen for a Wacom One. It's a little thicker and slightly heavier and feels more comfortable
What apps do you use for drawing? I have a a Tab s6, which is still great but I'm struggling a bit on which drawing app I should use.. I really wish Procreate came to Android because of the large amount of tutorials
@@Vinz3ntR I use Krita mostly, because the feature set is outstanding and it's free. The default layout isn't really functional, but you can drag and combine tool windows to get a functional working space. The only other one I've really liked as much is Clip Studio, but I don't like the subscription model. I've also heard good things about HiPaint and it's being touted as a Procreate clone, but it's one of the few I haven't used yet.
I am really happy that the Samsung Tabs and Android have closed the gap quite a bit with Apple. I'm in the android ecosystem and really didn't want to get an iPad, but I thought it was my only option. Then I started seeing people talk about the tab s8 series and how much they liked it for drawing/painting. I recently bought myself the Tab S9U and I absolutely love it. There are so many good art applications now and Samsung Dex is great.
@@drxzzykwk5455 procreate as far as I know is not on android at all BUT @Brad Colbow has videos on android options, I personally use sketchbook pro, Hipaint, and clip stuido paint on my S6 lite
A digital artist coming from an iPad Pro, the S9 tab ultra is amazing! The screen is gorgeous. The drawing experience is great. I love the s-pen. I love the Wacom one pen that works on the tablet. Im happy i made a switch.
@@SingulariTae7I strongly recommend Infinite Painter, it has the deepest and thick impasto oils I've evr tested. Bezides you have its vectorial brother Infinite Design. And for more tecnhical needs, Concepts is amazing, superb!
I am fully biased for Windows, Samsung and Android, however for artistic purpose the Apple pro is fully tailored for this: More nits (brighter outdoor) it has true color P3 IPS with 264 ppi at 120hz Retina, pushed with double the performance power in that m2 chip, that just blows Samsung out of the water for once, it has one of the most fluid, smooth and dedicated drawing apps Procreate (that can handle big projects) so no 3rd party software and hardware is needed.. Battery inside the pencil makes sure the pen has way less parallax than the Samsung pen (compared in many videos) and when it comes to drawing both screen and pen integration, is of key importance to have the best drawing feeling, the Apple pen itself has better weight, balance and control than the s-pen, overall the Apple is more compact which is another big thing when it comes to portability, instead of lurking some kind of flat screen along with you in your bus ride home and needing to bring your glove at all times.. Apple has better anti glare coating and is fingerprint resistant and to top it off it comes with a whopping couple hours better battery life, that also goes hand in hand with the portability you want to expect from a tablet drawing device.. I am on the fence and hate to say that Samsung is tailored more towards the everyday users and generic features tablets have to offer, but for artists I can see very clearly that Apple is designed to focus that market.. I will always be biased for Windows computers and Samsung smartphones, but I would actually consider the Ipad pro to be the best overall digital standalone drawing tool..
Just sold my iPad pro12.1 and iPad mini, They were the latest, and I am getting a Galaxy Tab S9+, keeping my iPhone 13 mini but getting a new Z Flip, switching Apple watch for Galaxy Watch 6. All this change started with the iPads, everyone's says "iPad apps are better" and yes, but only if you are a video or photo editor, basically a content creator, I`m not, I`,m a consultant I travel, receive documents, and sometimes edit them on the go with a tablet, Ipad displays are OK nothing special but most of my coworkers made the switch, Android got excellent handling apps, displays are waaaay better, look better, and they are overall more funn to use, and I can do the same, watching movies on the go, use as a second display, read and create documents, and the pen is waaaays better than apple pencil. So, good job Samsung!
I think it is important to note, which you kind of did by mentioning dex, is that the app scaling problem is basically fixable by using dex and/or multitasking modes which will scale the app down to a more mobile-sized window. It isn't perfect, and hopefully there will be better full screen support for larger screened devices soon but in the meanwhile I feel like that's a pretty good fix for the time being.
Most people are going to be using their tablets for more than just drawing, so i feel as tho the s9 ultra would be the better buy. Customizations, multitasking and the s pen does so much more.
For full 2 years I tried to love or somewhat enjoy the iPad Pro ( for sketching amd sculpting) but the IPAD OS just kept upsetting me on a daily basis with it's restrictive ways and insanely contrived file management. It was a constant joyless pain to use. Finally ater realising that Procreate is anyway not my preferred painting app and Nomad Sculpt runs great on Android too, I ditched it for the Samsung S8 Ultra and now S9 ultra. Suddenly using a Tablet is so much pure joy and fun and constantly inviting to get creative work done on it. Extra Bonus: I can use the same pens I use for drawing on the tablet to draw also on my Samsung phone as well as on my laptop screen that happens to use the same wacom emr tech. Talk about fluid cross hardware platform!
It's just a shame Samsung clearly wants to become more restrictive "à la Apple", best example being them locking the Windows Samsung Notes app behind owning an overpriced Galaxy Book PC, when the app has been running perfectly on non-Galaxy Windows devices for literally years ! Now the app does't load anymore if you don't have a Galaxy Book. Compatibility has always been my main reason for using Samsung devices, but Apple's selfish-moneygrabby-toxic influence can be felt freaking everywhere for the same reason humanity will never have a cure for Cancer: it is not profitable so advancing humanity becomes secondary, if important at all.
@@Arc.M Same. And because it's not trendy to call Samsung out on anything, they'll just keep getting worse. They know full well that they can do no wrong.
Completely agreeing with your view. The only true place where the iPad shines is its processor performance. If you're doing some video editing on your tablet, the iPad remains the better choice. But as a pure "desktop" experience replacement for all the daily simple tasks, the Galaxy s9 ultra is the best productivity gadget you can buy,... even as a ebook reader !
same sentiment. I've been an android user for a longest time but i still end up buying an ipad pro simply for the app optimization specially art and editing apps that android cant seem to offer.
I have the m2 ipad 12.9 and s9 ultra. You cant go wrong with either but i just enjoy using the s9 ultra more. The beautiful screen experience and flexible multitasking is unmatched.
I got both also because I'm a tech junky, and I can confirm also that the s9 ultra is better to use for multi-tasking. And the S9 ultra screen is unmatched 👌
here in Brazil buying apple products are extremely expensive, like, one of the most expensive Country to buy Apple Products, the iPad Pro costs 15x our minimum wage, so I was really thinking about switching to Samsung ecosystem, I've been already in love with the Galaxy S23 ultra and Z Flip 5, now I'm looking for a good tablet to Work, study, design/draw sometimes and manage my Marketing Agency when I'm away from my office.
For the people assuming apple has a wall around apps are funny. As a dev friend has told me “it is just easier to develop apps for apple products because it is only apples products where as android has way too many products” and to put that at into perspective over 600 android phones were launched last year that doesn’t include tablets or watches. That’s only phones. All running a different version of android. He has told me that is the problem with android. It is not that they don’t want to. It is that it is extremely hard and expensive when apple products are easy to dev for. There is no wall around apps unlike for products of apples.
I've been using both a high end iPad and the galaxy Tab s7+ and I prefer the s-pen every day of the week. I'm probably weird though since I I even prefer it to the Wacom Cintiq pen. I've never understood why anyone wants big heavy pens. Sure there might be better balance in them or something. But it's not for me. I'm not a size queen 😅
2:06 Brad if you remember correctly, earlier Samsung always used to provide Super Amoled displays to Tab S series, whether the original Tab S all the way to the Tab S6. After that they went into cost cutting with Tab S7(while charging the same amount as Tab S6) having an LED LCD display (only Tab S7+ had the OLED panel).
Just to put things into perspective. First tablet samsung put an oled screen was the Galaxy Tab 7.7 from over a decade ago. How do i know? Because i bought one back in the days for screen alone
Correction about S Pen: the S Pen is not battery charged. It has a single capacitor inside that stores a charge, and the charge is solely for use of Air Gestures. The S Pen itself does NOT need to be charged in order to be used.
I'm heavily considering going android for my next tablet, and switching from iPhone to android. kinda tired of the apple ecosystem and not being able to do the things i wanna do. the only thing that kept me with apple was their optimization for their camera inside social media apps and airdrop. Now i no longer really need that and it seems like samsung has also caught up. android will probably work better for me and my wallet in the long run.
I thought this day wasn't ever going to come!!! Great review Brad!!! We know you are mainly an Apple user, so this shows how impartial this review has been. Keep it up!!! Your reviews are informative as well as entertaining!!!
Very fair review on both tablets. I have been using the iPad for years now and recently purchased the Tab S9. Samsung has done brilliantly with this tablet and, although their previous models were alright, none really competed with the iPad like this one. As for the S-Pen, bear in mind that Samsung is soon going to release a Creatives S-Pen which is about the length of the Apple Pencil and also heavier. The S-Pen is more suited for writing notes since it's lighter but the Creatives S-Pen will be what most of us artists prefer for digital drawing. Keen to seen how that would feel. Thank you for this video.
When you say S-Pen are you referring to the smaller phone version on the Samsung Ultra? Because the pen that comes with the Samsung tablet is a bigger version, similar to the ipad pen (that still uses lightning charging, lol).
@@srobeck77 He's probably talking about the S9 Ultra's S-Pen. Also, the S-Pen is smaller than the Apple Pencil, and the Apple Pencil shown in this video (the Apple Pencil 2nd Gen) charges by wireless charging, the same as the S-Pen.
@@nagamverma329 not really, no. if you simply edit documents and watch videos, yes, but the keyboard case is an additional 30K Rs. (bumping up the price of the tablet + keyboard case to around 1.4L). Wouldn't recommend for things like gaming, office work, etc.
One thing that wasn't mentioned in the video is how great the One UI S-Pen experience is. The many years of expertise Samsung had with the "Galaxy Note" series really shows
I'm so glad Android tablets are better now. The iPad is the only Apple product I own cuz i really don't like their OS but the drawing experience in it was so good that I got one (and also double for note taking in school). I'm gonna be getting a Samsung the next time i need to replace it
Although the hardware performance is good, there are too few programs suitable for it. Still, the limitations of programs that can be used in the Android operating system are clear. This is why many artists and engineers still use more Apple products.
I traded my 6th gen iPad Pro 12.9 and picked up a Galaxy S9 Ultra. I have to agree the iPad is the same old reliable it has been, but the S9 Ultra is fun. I really enjoy using it.
I think Samsung has finally caught Apple here honestly. I mean the screen is unmatched OLED just takes the cake literally breath taking at times. Was able to drop in an extra 1TB high speed SD card that only cost me $50 bucks in addition to the 512 it came with. Can always just buy another SD card if I ever actually use all the space or just need more. It's just unheard of with how much Apple charges for more storage. The S pen included and it's good plus the ability to use the Wacom Pen as well. Samsung Dex is really not talked about enough either it's the Ipad pros missing link honestly. You pay all this money and have a Tablet that is really capable of outperforming some decently equipped laptops even and yet your stuck to a extremely limited tablet style experience and they make no effort to change it because it would encroach upon their laptop business. It almost stops serving a purpose to have the much power in a tablet and not be able to properly use it. The only real remaining downside is yeah software is still not as good usually but at least these days you have options. It's not the desert it used to be where you kinda had no choice. Still a lot of work to be done there but it's enough where I no longer feel like I need to be trapped in the Apple ecosystem.
I have the s9 Plus? I think? Lol the middle sized one. i really love that you can secure the pen in the official case. I hardly ever take my Pencil out with me because i lose it too easily
Thanks for a fair comparison. I am not an artist, just a business illustrator. Since I already have a S24 Ultra phone and Tab S9+, I've subscribed to and am learning Clip Studio Paint. I wish I had a Sansung Book 4 Pro 360. I have a Lenovo with touch screen but not oen support. I bought an XP PEN pen tablet, but will probably draw on the S9+ for the most part, using a bluetooth keyboard for shortcuts. Thanks again.
As an ipadpro user of 7 years i can definitely see your points with the s9, i for one would love the larger screen. Recently moving to the affinity suite has me a little frustrated mainly because of the learning curve of a new app. Really missing the loss of adobe cs3 from my upgraded mac but with their stance lately on ai i am glad for the change
@@ghost-user559in my experience affinity sucks. Unpredictably unstable, just crashes rarely and randomly, on ipad or on windows - doesn’t matter. I lost some work because of it. Thats why I stopped tried using it. Don’t know how is it in V2 app though, but I don’t care anymore because features in v2 aren’t worth the upgrade
SPen drawing on the Tab S tablets or Galaxy phone is way way nicer than on a naked ipad with the Apple Pencil. I can use the Spen without any screen protector but the ipad drawing experience is not great without a matt paperlike screen protector! Also you don't need to pair the Spen to draw and I can I multiple Spen on different devices unlike the pain and need to pair Pencils for iPads. I wish Procreate and Fresco is available for Android tablets. I wish iPads have a better and more OSX kind of file system.
I switched from the S8 Plus to the ipad pro m2. Why I like the ipad: the amount of quality 3rd party accessories. The form factor is more ergonomic. What I miss from samsung tab: The S Pen is so much better. Feels better in the hand and better feel when writing/drawing. Samsung Dex, definitely.
Have been using the galaxy tab s7+. Considering upgrading. Other than streaming and manga, I also do 3D art with Nomad Sculpt. Having a 14" screen for that would be awesome.
I have been using a tab s4 for the past 5 years now and loved every aspect of it. Tomorrow im going to upgrade my tablet, and Im going with the ipad pro. For me, one of samsungs biggest selling point was how much bang you got for your buck, but now the price (at least in my country) is almost the same as the ipad. So because of the better art apps available with apple, this long-time samsung fangirl will be getting an ipad.
I hope you have other apple products because that iPad doesn't play well with others... I bought a IPad from a friend for art to find out that I couldn't connect and move any of it to my phone or PC without jumping through a bunch of convoluted hoops. It was terrible.
@@jerrellsjohnson just set up a nas or a shared disk for your local net and make your life easier. That is the superior way to manage files between devices even when apple is not involved
I seen one of your reviews where you slammed a Wacom device for not including the drawing pen in the box. You said that if you purchase one, you can't draw with what you have in the box. Now, you say that you give the edge to apple pencil. The apple pencil is an extra charge and if I buy an iPad, I can't draw with what I have in the box unless I use my finger. I love my ipad and procreate but, let's give Sammy its flowers.
That's because an iPad without a stylus isn't useless; there's tons you can do as it's a standalone device that is optimised for touch. Wacom not including a stylus should rightfully be slammed, because any Wacom tablet without a pen is completely useless. They're specifically for art. It's great that Samsung includes the pens in the box, but the idea that Apple can be compared to Wacom in that respect is a little disingenuous. Neither Samsung nor Apple's tablets cater specifically to artists (unlike Wacom). Microsoft doesn't include the pen with their surface laptops either. Doesn't make them useless.
Have always been a Windows/Microsoft user, went to buy either a Surface Studio 2, Ipad Pro 12.9 2TB or a Android Tablet, went for the Ipad Pro 2TB as everyone in my Art & Design degree use Ipads for procreate and the built in LiDAR camera for 3D modelling.
I have both. iPad pro is purely for drawing and everything else for Galaxy Tab utra. Especially for its size, you'll appreciate it whenever you turn on the screen. The screen is so large so you will be often using two apps at the same time. You can use it as a second monitor or Cintiq. Connecting the TV and using Dex is extra. When I need to write or take notes, I mostly use my Tab Ultra again. But when it comes to drawing, It can't beat Procreate with Apple Pencil. So that is why I have both products.
That is truly how it should be viewed, this comment hits the nail right on the head.. I am looking for best portable drawing tool, so I have to go with Apple even though I will always be biased for Windows and Samsung products.. Though everything you can do with the Galaxy tab I can also do with my phone or even PC, so I do not see much more then just generic use for the Galaxy Tab.. But I actually do see the added value the Ipad pro has going this time, especially compared to the very expensive Wacom market, Apple just seems more portable and versatile compared to dedicated (fixed desktop) Wacom system and I do like to have a little bit of that generic tablet use on demand.. The only thing holding me back is the file management ecosystem..
Fair I'd say. I don't agree on the hardware part, as the mentioned pro apps make use of the better hardware, but that feeds into the overall theme of consume vs create. The Samsung stuff looks the better consumer experience, but the iPads are still unmatched in the creative applications territory where you just don't get the same on Android. I do hope though, that Samsung keeps on going and going strong as I'm pretty certain they pushed Apple in terms of the upcoming iPad Pros & the release of better apps.
As someone that favors android for their familiarity, flexibility and affordability; my only annoyance with Samsung is the lack in variety of interesting cover/keyboards that are made specifically for their products. Apple has a myriad of off-brands companies dedicating accessories to every product they release while I can hardly find something that can rival it on Samsung's side... unless I wait for a while.
I've been an apple user for many years and been watching your videos too. You're the reason why I bought samsung tab s9 ultra. I was skeptic at first but I fell in love with my s9u❤❤. Thanks for the review ❤
Apple will never make the iPad a laptop replacement, the are out to make money nothing more nothing less, why do you think they don’t have a touch screen in there laptops
I mean, all businesses are out to make money. Thats the purpose of their existence, no different from having a job to get paid. But there is a greedy spectrum scale. Thats a more accurate way to think of it.
I'm using an iPad Pro now, but my next device is probably going to be the S9, one of the models. Although I really like using Fresco and Procreate, I can also work with Clip Studio Paint, and I've always felt the drawing experience on the Galaxy Tab line was superior. Only iOS apps held me back. A lot of folks mentioned Infinite Painter, but in my experience (years ago) it was buggy and unreliable. I wonder if it's gotten any better.
It’s pretty good but another issue is lack of 3rd party brushes. I dislike how developers like procreate create an “elite” approach and make apps exclusive to iOS. wish Samsung or even Google bought Procreate out so it’s available on android and to humble them
@@myqaveli I'm in a golden cage with procreate and my brushes. I tried the s9 from my sister, and everything is superior. I can't get my mind with ios can't have a proper Samsung dex and screen scaling. I think in a couple of years I would do the switch, I could do much more than drawing on a Samsung tablet
Don´t worry, I´m not going to yell at you, but WHY DIDN´T YOU COMPARED THE PRICES?! In all seriousness now, the video is fantastic, and it helped me confirm my decision to go for Samsung; thank you so much! However, it would be great to have a price category so we could make a completely informed decision.
Preordered Samsung s9 Ultra, 256gbs. I paid a total of $722 -trade in Tab S7+ $350 -Government Employee Discount $180 +It comes with S-pen & free Slim Book Cover
I have ipad 9 which I bought for note taking. But I will be getting an Android tab. Ipad is just too restrictive for me. 1. CloudStream and Stremio apps aren't on ipad to watch pirated content. 2. Can't download torrent on ipad easily 3. No Revanced 4. No emulator 5. Bad aspect ratio for watching content 6. No browser with extension support (Kiwi and Firefox)
Except if you like ios ecosystem or procreate, go android I tried s9 from my sister, it's way superior for productivity and everything. It's very much like a laptop replacement I could install vscode server with termux and code. Watch series, download torrent, proper ublock origin, revanced, proper screen scaling on hdmi Probably in 2-5 years with sideloading ios will close the gap with android, but it's hard to know
All of the processing power in Samsung Tab seems irrelevant because in the next 5 years no apps will fully utilize It (except for gaming maybe). 2 years old Tab S7 is as useful and productive as the current S9 IMHO.
I like both just prefer the iPad OS. But android has come along way. And Samsung always comes with those extra features that make it awesome. IT’s preference but latest iPad Pro is over a year old and still stacks up. Can’t go wrong with either
Apps that I use for art are available for both iOS and Android so platform and software is not a problem for me. I wish I knew about the S9 Ultra, I thought S8 was the newest flagship like from Samsung. I like the iPad Pro, but the S9 Ultra looks like an amazing tablet. That screen is beautiful.
I have this weird bug with iPad and Apple Pencil, where the distance from which it starts drawing varies ALL-THE-FREAKING-TIME, going from around 0.1mm to 1.5mm, apparently is dependant, but not limited to, if you have a case that squeezes the iPad a tiny bit too much and by extention its digitizer and seems to happen more on M2 iPads because of the hover funciton. However, it consistently starts drawing BEFORE the Apple Pencil touches the screen, with or without a case, which has never happened on any Samsung tablet I've owned (currently have both iPad and Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra). Drawing is not too bad, but for someone that takes a lot of notes like me, this problem is an absolute nightmare and very frustrating when you expect the pencil to stop writing a word or a letter, but the streak keeps going as if you were still touching the screen. I haven't brought the iPad and Pencil back to the store because I feel like I'm definitely going to be ignored. If anyone has faced this and found a solution, please share :) Also I couldn't disagree more with Brad, S Pen feels better than Apple Pencil any day, the thinner tip is an absolute must, I can't fathom someone preferring the thicker tip...
The problem you're describing with the Apple Pencil has happened to me too (M2 iPad Pro), but only when using third party tips. It's never happened when using Apple's own pencil tips. If, as you say, the case is 'squeezing' the iPad maybe try one of those magnetic folio like cases that don't have any side protection?
@@Cyndakip I do have both sorts of cases and mainly use the not-very-protecting magnetic folio thing now, and unfortunately it still happens, as well as with original pen tip, though the distance seems to be mitigated a bit. Since then I also heard "grounding" the iPad, touching some grounded metal to discharge any static, can help too. In the end I do all those things when I take notes on the iPad, and it feels like it helps even though it does still write before touching the screen, surely is weird and not something I ever experienced on Galaxy digitizers
Hey Brad great video. Is there a good app for animation in android. I enjoyed simple interface of Procreate I heard that CSP also provides anmation asist but is there another app you can recommend? And have you tried Nomad Sculpt on android?
The biggest thing that keeps me connected through apple is durability! I have never had a Samsung last me longer than a year or so due to droppage. My apple products have never failed because I dropped them. Has that changed as of late?
Samsung hardware is better than Apple's. About 50% of Apple's hardware comes from Samsung. Samsung smartphones and tablets last for years and years. My sister still has a perfectly working Galaxy S10 and a Tab S6.
If youre that clumsy (no offense, just truth) and dropping tablets, you need to have at least a slim case on them 100% of the time, then youd never have this issue. That said, I havent heard of this being a thing with either of these tablets.
@@srobeck77I have children. I am not that clumsy. If you have to say no offense then you know you are being offensive. I always have a case on my phones/tablets. No case has fully protected my androids in the past. I have had an iPhone now for years so it’s possible the quality has changed. I switched over back when my battery blew up on my new phone and they discontinued that model. They didn’t have a larger screen model available at the time so I switched to apple. Haven’t had a cracked screen since.
I always watch comparison between Android and Apple (When it comes to tablets) and even tho most of the times people claim the Android tablet is better at the end you always end up seeing them using Ipad... So that's why its so hard for me to give it a go to android, i would like to hear your honest thoughts on this. Do you actually go for Samsung? What is your own take on this? Why you always end up using ipad?
it's the user experience. I ve been a nexus 4 user for years, tweiking everything. When you go iphone, it's truth that it's so more restricted, but every day use is different. The apps responds better, animatiosn is fastest and smoother. Just the scrolling of a document? it's somehow smoother. Really rare that apps crash or freeze, with android is way more frequent and they are less smooth. When I picked up my first macbook pro 13 in 2009, I was astonished at how good the trackpad is compared to windows laptops. Gestures etc are 5 years ahead. Windows is now more close, but you always have that "user experience" smoothness that you miss when using android-windows. You can adapt and if you just use it you don't notice. But when you compare, it's there.
Very balanced review. Won't buy into the Apple ecosystem again. Since I gave Adobe the rental-no-more boot, I do wish Affinity could make it to Android. Don't see that happening anytime soon which is sad, because I *really love* the 2.2+ (beta) updates.
Always look forward to your reviews. I won both the 9 ultra and a 2017 and 2018 12.9 iPad. Both are really good but I always pick up the 9 ultra. The display, the size, a certain level of freedom for customization. From an artist perspective with earlier Samsung tab models it was a bummer to find decent software but now the 2 or 3 staples I use are a pleasure to work with. They are definitely right on Apple’s tail with this model.
The biggest problem with these comparisons is comparing a 14 inch tablet with a 12.9 inch iPad....just get the same size tablet and compare both...the more important thing that he didn't touch upon is the feel of the pen on the device. With the iPad...it feels bad...like plastic on glass....you need screen protectors to even get close. With Samsung, the rubberised tip just feels really really good. Its not spoken enough about...hell even Samsung doesn't know this which is why their adverts don't talk about this. The s pen feels better on the screen...it feels more like paper than the apple pencil. Lastly, the inclusion of the s pen for free is not really given as an advantage...there are more premium feeling pens available for the Samsung tablet but the s pen being free, and feeling as light as it does in hand is a big thing for artists too...and even if they want something heavier, then they can spend the same money an apple pencil costs to get something with similar weight
The Samsung charging position it is much better it can charge in a case. Also, the Apple pencil can't do half of what the S-Pen can. I do more than draw. Also, you can have multiple apps on open in windows on the Tab S. You don't have to run them full screen.
How is the screen surface on the S9 Ultra? Will you need one of those paper-like screen films to make drawing feel better? I've put a generic screen film on my ipad and it helps keeping the pencil from slipping around on the surface of the glass. Keeps my lines from getting to wonky.
The 1tb ipad makes sense for Procreate considering it gives you alot more layers to use if you need them. Honest question how many layers do you get with the Samsung?
Layer limiting heavily like this is mostly a procreate thing as far as I’m aware. If you use clip studio paint on iPad or android you can go up to like 10,000 layers at up to 20,000x20,000 canvas resolution. Krita has no limit and should be able to go as far as the integer value allows it to do which is about 2,147,483,648 layers. To be honest on both of these software you will struggle with both iPads and galaxy tabs hardware before you reach the software limits
On I side note, since we're comparing Android and Ios, I don't know who could think that IOS is an acceptable operating system, you can't look at your own files on the Ipad, and you cannot block Advertising, that alone is a deal breaker, and as much as I like procreate I am not buying another Ipad pro. Have you ever try to send a PSD file from the desktop to the Ipad? And then you can only open it as a flat image, unless you do a bunch of weird clouds uploads and downloads? What a mess that is
Best videos and reviews, Brad. I could have easily gone Samsung if they were up to speed a year and a half ago. I definitely dig their products, but I’ve made the jump to iOS and can’t turn back now.
I love the screen and size of the samsung, but I'll pick Ipad. Though I agree you Brad when you mentioned that in the last few installment there's hasn't been any innovation from Apple towards the ipad. The reason why I'll choose Ipad over samsung are the Apps, they just work way better. If you want to use the tablet for more than illustration; video production, 3d sculpting, motion capture, integration with other softwares. Ipad wins. Apple just give me a 15" Ipad.
Hi Brad! Nice comparison! Why are you using glove on the tab s9? As soon as you approach the spen tip to the screen, the touch absolutely turns off making a perfect palm rejection. That's the case for all samsung tablets, I have a s3 and it works that way too, I can absolutely rest my palm when drawing, writting, etc.
Now that snapdragon has launched X Elite chipsets, I'm pretty sure that samsung will launch tablets with these chipsets as well, And from what I have seen These X elite chipsets are just beasts so tablets with this chip will be way more powerful than any current ipads in the market. can't wait to see what the future of ARM based chipsets can offer.
I used to be in the Apple ecosystem with the MBP, iPhone and Ipad pro. But over time apple starts to piss me off with their storage options and UI in both the iPhone and iPad. Made the switch to Samsung note series and now S series and never looked back. As for the ipad, I was always afraid to draw on the device. There was always this pressure of not being able to full make use of the device and disappointing the hardware if I don't produce good drawings. But not too sure why, I'm happier drawing and drawing more on my Tad S7 +. My only grip is Procreate and adobe fresco is not on Andriod.
Brad I really wish you would have covered the difference in the pens feel on the screen and can we use different nibs on the Samsung? I feel the nuance of the pens and screen are everything to an artist. Cheers
Good stuff... But I missed Brad as iPad and Brad as Samsung from the last time you did the smackdown. That was hilarious. I prefer Android, so I lean Samsung. I just can't understand why they can't do 5G versions of the Ultra. I want a tablet I can take and go with... IDK. Seems obvious to me, but I guess no one else wants it.
The on-screen feel of the s-pen feels so much nicer the iPad. And no need to charge it. Those paper like screen protectors help on iPad. I get incredibly annoyed by Apple's security features. You can't even setup or use an iPad without connecting it to the Internet, and then it was to verify with codes sent to iPhone. The whole experience is obnoxious. I've never lost or had a device stolen, but I have been without Internet on all sorts of occasions where I'd still want to use it setup or reset a device. Plus, Dex is way better ios. And android actually has normal mouse support. Mouse support on iOS is retarded.
@Seyyad93 basically it's the same technology that Samsung uses for their high end phones and iPhones Pro series displays. Deep blacks, vivid colors, less power consumption, brighter, and smoother. Amoled screens are good but they are Samsungs old panel technology.
@@Worthless. idk why you didn't do your own research like you say BEFORE you bought it! If you buy stuff based of leaks, you got bigger problems! 🤣🤣 The Tab S9U is absolutely AMAZING, I doubt you even have one.

@@tonicshade well, thats totally your opinion! personally, i really dont think that animoji or imessage or sm like that is important to make a great tablet since this features are more used in cellphones. you have great apps on samsung too, and as an artist, i can tell that csp is way better and more professional then procreate. even face id, honestly, who really cares about that hahahaha if you still want to buy an ipad bcs youre already in a ios system and you like it, go for it! but you should know that it is truly overpriced and if youre an artist (or just want the apple pencil) it is also overpriced and the bare minimum to be a great pencil. but if youre rich and you dont care about that and still want to buy it, go for it, who am i to tell you what to do :)

@@tonicshadeIt's EMR, not Bluetooth. Bluetooth is only used for some other features like remote controls for the camera app. Samsung is one of the top stakeholders of Wacom and they use the Wacom tech. S-pens still need to be charged when you want to use Bluetooth features mentioned above. So, you are not correct about anything.
@tonicshade You said S-pen used Bluetooth for drawing and you still say you are not wrong.. So you mean Wacom uses Bluetooth not EMR and Apple uses the similar tech to Wacom? What?
@@tonicshade I was talking about pens, so if you were just triggered by the word "anything", yeah, you are partially correct about your statement. Apple has some more features and apps Samsung doesn't. But regarding pencil techs, you were all wrong. For example, Apple pencil uses AES which is very different tech from Wacom's EMR. There are reasons why Apple pencil are heavy, expensive, and needs to be charged. I'm not saying which one is better here. They both have pros and cons, jitter for example, because they use different techs.
OKEY Brad , let me tell you tha before 2020 all iPads were having similar displays the liquid retina ( LCD ) displays , but since the ipad pro 2021 12.9 has what apple called mini led which is similar to LCD but looks like OLED, I think you missed this part and you should explain it well!
Is there an app on android that crushes Procreate? Because honestly for me (iPad Pro = Procreate) … so if there is an app that is better, jumping to Samsung would be somehow convincing
A surplus of processing power is irrelevant. Both tablets are super fast and fast enough to fulfill every task. It's about usability- and productivity options, innovation, gaming- and multi-media experience and the Ultra destroys the ipad Pro on these very relevant aspects.
Great insight and advice! thank you.
God bless android developers!

Also the Wacom pen is much much better than the apple pencil
What apps do you use for drawing? I have a a Tab s6, which is still great but I'm struggling a bit on which drawing app I should use.. I really wish Procreate came to Android because of the large amount of tutorials
@@Vinz3ntR Clip Studio with the Tabmate is my choice. Also Infinite Painter as an alternative for Procreate.
@@Vinz3ntR I use Krita mostly, because the feature set is outstanding and it's free.
I have the S9U and wow, i am so glad i bought it. This gave me the decision to switch and have purchased the s23 ultra.

Plus the S-pen comes free. And that OLED screen = winning.
Just trade my iPad for Tab S9+. Just love things tab s9+ can provide me a lot of ways to work with.
how ya feelings?:D
I think it is important to note, which you kind of did by mentioning dex, is that the app scaling problem is basically fixable by using dex and/or multitasking modes which will scale the app down to a more mobile-sized window. It isn't perfect, and hopefully there will be better full screen support for larger screened devices soon but in the meanwhile I feel like that's a pretty good fix for the time being.
Yes pop out windows too, on Samsung... choices! 😊🎉

But, alas, this review assumes that each of the 5 categories is equally important.

Watching this video on my Samsung Tab S7 (Still rock solid with all steady updates)...

Seriously test with Nomad. 3D artists are coming to portable tablets.

@@wolfwoof2000 I understand I wish google or Samsung purchased procreate to make the move easier 🤧
I paid a total of $722
-trade in Tab S7+ $350
-Government Employee Discount $180

Isn’t the s9 ultra base model more expensive than the pro base model though?
@@ComfyChromabut s9 base is much cheaper than ipad pro base 128 gb😊

@@lakkadbagga the s9 ultra starts at 1199.99, and the iPad Pro starts at 1099. What am I missing?
I have ipad 9 which I bought for note taking. But I will be getting an Android tab. Ipad is just too restrictive for me.
1. CloudStream and Stremio apps aren't on ipad to watch pirated content.
2. Can't download torrent on ipad easily
3. No Revanced
4. No emulator
5. Bad aspect ratio for watching content
6. No browser with extension support (Kiwi and Firefox)
Except if you like ios ecosystem or procreate, go android
I tried s9 from my sister, it's way superior for productivity and everything. It's very much like a laptop replacement
I could install vscode server with termux and code. Watch series, download torrent, proper ublock origin, revanced, proper screen scaling on hdmi
Probably in 2-5 years with sideloading ios will close the gap with android, but it's hard to know
S pen is light partly because it doesn't have a battery, just a capacitor
All of the processing power in Samsung Tab seems irrelevant because in the next 5 years no apps will fully utilize It (except for gaming maybe). 2 years old Tab S7 is as useful and productive as the current S9 IMHO.
I like both just prefer the iPad OS. But android has come along way. And Samsung always comes with those extra features that make it awesome. IT’s preference but latest iPad Pro is over a year old and still stacks up. Can’t go wrong with either
ipad OS's version of multi-tasking and multi-window is horrible compared to Samsung's almost perfect implementation. Samsung DEX is a game chanter.
Apps that I use for art are available for both iOS and Android so platform and software is not a problem for me. I wish I knew about the S9 Ultra, I thought S8 was the newest flagship like from Samsung. I like the iPad Pro, but the S9 Ultra looks like an amazing tablet. That screen is beautiful.
so far for pro drawers like me, procreate is still the best option. it’s just the best option on any OS. that’s basically what made me go with apple
Really liked the info on apps, no one is telling this!!
If anyone has faced this and found a solution, please share :)
Also I couldn't disagree more with Brad, S Pen feels better than Apple Pencil any day, the thinner tip is an absolute must, I can't fathom someone preferring the thicker tip...
You didn't talk about their battery 🔋 😭
Thanks this is the comparison I have been waiting for. I have the tab s8 and it's way more fun than the iPad
LETS GO ANOTHER ONE!!!!!!!!!! Also thank you a lot this is great info
It looks like he gave extra points to the Galaxy Tab, but he's going to use the iPad instead 😂
The Samsung charging position it is much better it can charge in a case. Also, the Apple pencil can't do half of what the S-Pen can. I do more than draw. Also, you can have multiple apps on open in windows on the Tab S. You don't have to run them full screen.
And the spen don't need charging to use, you can draw on it without changing unlike the Apple Pencil
Excellent video, Brad. Thanks for that review!
What a mess that is
I also like to procreate. See what I did there?
Best videos and reviews, Brad. I could have easily gone Samsung if they were up to speed a year and a half ago. I definitely dig their products, but I’ve made the jump to iOS and can’t turn back now.
My choices depend on what apps each has and which has best drawing input (pencil/stylus). 4:15
3:38 microSD slot is a bonus
I love the screen and size of the samsung, but I'll pick Ipad. Though I agree you Brad when you mentioned that in the last few installment there's hasn't been any innovation from Apple towards the ipad. The reason why I'll choose Ipad over samsung are the Apps, they just work way better. If you want to use the tablet for more than illustration; video production, 3d sculpting, motion capture, integration with other softwares. Ipad wins. Apple just give me a 15" Ipad.
That and Apple needs to get away from the cheaper LCD screens.
Have you seen Instagram on iPad?
@@aurelious92 i dont use chinese created software like Insta-hackers
If only Procreate was on Android 😢 I'd switch so fast.
Hipaint is a real close ko. I follow procreate tut's with it.
Medibang pro which is basically just procreate is coming on android soon

major part is the performance and pen, when drawing.
No, M2 is still better than upcoming snapdragon X elite as far as raw computation power is concerned.
By the time I can afford one of the higher end ones might as well wait for the s10 series
Last line was absolutely correct
About drawing you should know tab s9 can run with all Samsung s pens from s22u pen to its very own 1
I used to be in the Apple ecosystem with the MBP, iPhone and Ipad pro.
In Europe you van find the tab s8 ultra with 5G.
I'd love to see your tech stash, where you keep devices you've reviewed and whatnot, would you ever entertain the idea of doing a tour?
Which one is better for drawing?
THIS IS SUCH A GREAT VIDEO
1:10 - it's NOT super amoled(though it was on tab s8+,s8U). It's LTPO Dynamic Amoled 2X, which is waaaay better than predecessor.
Better in what way?
@Seyyad93 basically it's the same technology that Samsung uses for their high end phones and iPhones Pro series displays. Deep blacks, vivid colors, less power consumption, brighter, and smoother. Amoled screens are good but they are Samsungs old panel technology.
@@Worthless. idk why you didn't do your own research like you say BEFORE you bought it! If you buy stuff based of leaks, you got bigger problems! 🤣🤣 The Tab S9U is absolutely AMAZING, I doubt you even have one.
I have a Samsung galaxy tab s6 (top model in 2019) the spen stoped working within 1 year, got new pwn but now the positioning is not right,
The screen is now coming off as the glue has lost its stickiness
So in case of long term use ipad will work better.
Also use a s6, don't have any of the issues you described. Bought it when it came out 2019.
honestlty, i feel like samsung tablets can do everything an ipad does, and sometimes be even better! some people still choose to buy an ipad or bcs they're already into the ios or bcs they just want the "status"... as an artist, i can say for sure that the drawing experience is amazing, but its just not a great price, and you still gotta buy the pencil... im going with the samsung tablets for sure!
@@tonicshade well, thats totally your opinion! personally, i really dont think that animoji or imessage or sm like that is important to make a great tablet since this features are more used in cellphones. you have great apps on samsung too, and as an artist, i can tell that csp is way better and more professional then procreate. even face id, honestly, who really cares about that hahahaha
if you still want to buy an ipad bcs youre already in a ios system and you like it, go for it! but you should know that it is truly overpriced and if youre an artist (or just want the apple pencil) it is also overpriced and the bare minimum to be a great pencil.
but if youre rich and you dont care about that and still want to buy it, go for it, who am i to tell you what to do :)
@@tonicshade both pens have pros and cons, i really like the apple pencil, its indeed great but the samsung pen dont need to be charged to be used, its works for drawing (with pressure and everything) just some features w/ the button dont work without charging (im talking sm about art bcs i draw so details like that are very important to me hahahaha)
and about the wacom pens, its funny bcs actually the wacom pen actually works on the samsung tablets, so if you for some reason do not like the s-pen, you can by just the wacom pencil and it will work just fine! pressure and everything! thats incredible honestly bcs i feel that wacom pencils are soo ergonomic...
What?
@@tonicshade I was talking about pens, so if you were just triggered by the word "anything",
yeah, you are partially correct about your statement.
Still nowhere as good as OLED. But u do make a valid point in bringing this up.
The added price for extra storage on the ipad, along with the lack of sd card slots, is unconscionable.
Is there an app on android that crushes Procreate? Because honestly for me (iPad Pro = Procreate) … so if there is an app that is better, jumping to Samsung would be somehow convincing
Maybe Krita and Clip Studio, they're pretty good from what I've seen
SPen vs Apple pencil - for note taking SPen is better and that small tip is perfect. And it's gliding on the screen better
A surplus of processing power is irrelevant. Both tablets are super fast and fast enough to fulfill every task.
It's about usability- and productivity options, innovation, gaming- and multi-media experience and the Ultra destroys the ipad Pro on these very relevant aspects.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts 😊
What’s the best iPad for art that you would recommend?
Do you think a separation of android os as an additional android tab os would help developers structure their apps better for android tablets?
Is the S9+ good or too different from the Ultra? I was planning on getting one sooner this year
