I made a board for myself out of black foam board (foamcore). If you want to spend a couple hours making it you can save yourself $100+. You just cut out an iPad shaped hole in a sheet of 1/4 inch thick foamcore. You can make the foamcore as big as you want it to be to fit on your lap or whatever. Cut out some extra space around the areas where the iPad side buttons are located. Use double-sided tape to stick it to another sheet of foamcore (with no hole for the iPad). If you want to be able to plug the iPad in while you use it, you could cut a slot for the charging cable. Then you can just drop your iPad into the custom fit hole you made and get to work. It took me about 2 hours total to make and only cost the amount of 2 16x20 sheets of foamcore. (I already had double-stick tape and an x-acto knife). Oh, you also need to notch out a little area for the back camera (which is kind of annoying and I wish there was no back camera on the iPad Pro, because I never use it).
Thx! I’ve made one out of wood, but the painted surface is very grippy, now i`m trying to make one out of foam like you said. Wemt to the store amd spent 10$ bucks
I did this as well. White foam core cuz I already had some but I used 4 sheets to make it more sturdy. I also cut holes in the back where the iPad sits for cooling. (Because it got hot and started acting strange)
Brother, I had all those troubles as well, I have been a traditional illustrator since 1986, so between the mouse, and reg illustration, my elbow was shot !!! The solution thst work is not glamorous. It took forever, but my elbows are fine. Started with 3 pound dumbbells and doing wrist curls every day for months and months until the pain went away. Then I started doing arm curls for months and months and months, super low weight is the key now everything is great. I lift heavier weights. My body looks better. My health has improved and most of all that pain in the elbow and wrist is gone. It’s a long road probably will take you a year of every day work, but it works and you’ll be fixed. Hope this helps. 🙏🙌
I purchased a Sketchboard a week ago and it has made a huge difference in the neck pain I've been having. Yes, it's heavy, but it seems sturdy (though I wish the legs were sturdier). Glad you found something that works for you!
Cool, I agree it is great. The heaviness doesn’t really bother me, I’d rather that than flimsy. I don’t think I have a strong preference between either of these, I love them both.
A useful addition for an iPad! I noticed its difficult on your hands and arms after a while just using the ipad alone , plus you use the valuable screen space to rest your hand . I reckon you could make the same thing out of a sheet of ply / hardwood and just trace around your ipad and then jigsaw it out, create a secondary backing section underneath this gap and you would have the same thing...but for a fraction of the cost
I’ve actually seen a few different videos where people make their own. I think I’m not handy enough. Or motivated enough, lol. I already feel like I have too much to do.
For the Sketchboard Pro, I hold it upside down with the hole for the hand at the bottom and the iPad resting towards my arm (so that it doesn’t fall out) whenever I need to move around while I sketch, etc. That’s another way to transport both at the same time. They also have a bag for the sketchboard pro, but that adds to the total cost. I ended up getting it, but haven’t used it… yet. Lol. Great video as usual! Thank you for providing your comparison with the Darkboard! Happy Drawing! :D
This was such a fantastic video! Thank you so much for making it. I wanted to invest in either the dark board or the sketch board pro and I was actually leaning toward the sketch board pro but thanks to your review I am sold on the dark board. That weight difference makes such a big difference for me. Thanks again! Plus I really appreciated the complaints about both boards, it really helps in understanding what i might be managing once I do invest.
I know i probably should not comment a year later but for anyone looking to buy one, The Sketchboard pro 2 has a new accessory in pre-order that allows you to put it on a vasa mount or a tripod. The tripod adapter made me go with the skechboard pro 2 since i like to go outside and attempt to paint with a travel pallet I figured this would be nice to do the same with the ipad
Sketchboard Pro is awesome. I actually like how it plugs in from underneath so your cord doesn’t bend or kink and stays out of the way. But with either one having that extra space for your hand and arm to move is super nice.
Yeah they’re both great. The design on the cutout on the Darkboard is large enough to avoid kinks though. I use it plugged in all the time with no issues.
Sketchboard Pro reminded me of art school drawing boards but has made ALL the difference. But mad facts heavy as heck. I made a Velcro elastic “rubber band” to strap through the handle like the rubber bands and paper.
I'm a lefty with some seriously bad wrist tendonitis on the right side due to holding my ipad with the right hand while drawing with the left. I also tend to cock my head to see around my hand while I'm drawing. This board seems so simple and perfect and honestly more portable than a small table.
I already have a Sketchboard but I really like the look of the Darkboard. The smaller size would fit much better on my desk, but it's the lack of upgradability that puts me off making the switch. I'd love to see a version 2 in future that steals a few features from the sketchboard but I'm not sure how likely that is.
That’s understandable. I think in order for Darkboard to have that functionality it would need to be redesigned. That, the overall size of the iPad Pro has stayed the same for many years now and likely will continue to, aside from the addition of a larger 16” option that is rumored to be coming in the fall.
I was so excited to get the Sketchboard Pro but I ended up returning it as I just couldn’t get along with it. I need more height options, the legs were too low for me. I have a brilliant case with lots of angle slots & I kept reverting to using that. I may try the Darkboard just to compare though as I like that it looks smaller and lighter.
The Darkboard is definitely lighter and a little bit smaller. The folding stand default setting is a bit steeper of an angle than the sketchboard pro. I think you could also try another configuration with it to get it even more upright.
I’m curious to hear your thoughts. Which one feels more comfortable in terms of drawing on the couch. I imagine the dark board would win with the lighter weight and thicker form. But also with the newer iPad, I know the thinness doesn’t allow the iPad to sit flush, so would that be bothersome? I’m currently between ordering the dark board or sketch board pro v2 for my new 13in. Thanks!
I use both daily because I have them. I use the DarkBoard on the couch not because of the weight but because the thicker form is more comfortable resting on my lap. I prefer the sketchboard pro 2 when I’m at my desk. The difference in thickness on the new iPad is minimal in this context. I can see that it sits a tiny bit lower, but I can’t tell when I’m using it.
@@roofoofighter Fully aware. I actually emailed them about it and their response kind of implied they didn’t have any official plans to make a new version. I ended up ordering the current one and it still works really well with the new iPad 👍🏼
A downside to the Darkboard and correct me if I am wrong, is that it does not allow you to place her ipad in portrait mode when on the stand to draw from that perspective.
Glad i got the Sketchboard Pro as it was so easy to upgrade the insideto go from my Ipad Pro 11" to my new Ipad Pro 12" without having to buy a whole new Sketchboard Pro.
Sweet info - just an FYI - The Sketchbook Pro - is currently available to the USA - ONLY. So - for a lot of viewers - that might be the deciding factor in which one to go for.
I saw you propping your leg up on the table while using one of the boards. I sometimes use a pillow underneath. However, I think some type of soft wedge would be better.
My recommendation: Go all in with astropad. I have darkboard, USB C lunadisplay, and the removable screen protector. I am the biggest fan of each these products, and all together my iPad experience is amazing as a creator!!
Agreed, their products are great. I use astropad and used Lunadisplay before Apple built in the ability to use the iPad as a screen. I haven’t been crazy about the removable screen protectors I’ve tried though. I find there’s a tiny amount of play, or give when drawing on them. I haven’t tried the astropad one though.
I just got the Astropad rock paper pencil cover and pen tips and it is so nice. I'm not experiencing any give/play with it so far, but it's early days still. I came to watch your review because I was thinking about getting the Darkboard @@chris-piascik
One thing I was wondering about is the amount of ‘bounce’ on these 2 boards when using them at a desk with their stands. I press heavy with my Apple Pencil and the Darkboard stand looks a bit flimsy. Thoughts?
It’s pretty stable. I’d say there’s more flex with the sketchboard pro as the legs have little give, which you can see in the clip when I have it up on all four legs towards the beginning.
Thanks to you, I finally decided to try using Fresco on my iPad for some freelance illustration as opposed to trying to use photoshop or illustrator as what I was doing seemed like it would be easier with an Apple Pencil instead of a mouse. Fresco works well, and while a little frustrating at first because I am not that familiar with it, I found I addpatied fairly quickly. One thing I idid notice was how hot my iPad gets when drawing in fresco, and I would occasionally see my screen dim intermittently, I assume because of the heat. I notice that the Astropad Darkboard does not have the open back that the sketch board pro has and wonder if that open back aids in cooling the iPad. Just curious if you experience your iPad dimming slightly when using fresco. With that said, I think I am leaning toward the Sketchboard since it looks like it might keep the iPad cooler. The darkboard foam construction looks like it might keep the heat in. Not sure if you have any thoughts about that.
Hmm, does that only happen when you're plugged in? That's the only time my ipad gets hot, but never enough to dim the screen, and I use mine for hours at a time. If you are having issues with heat I'd definitely recommend the sketchboard pro. The Darkboard does have a tendency to insulate.
The sketchboard feels more comfortable and larger because it has tapered edges that sort of blend seamlessly with the table. The darkboard is thicker and doesnt have tapered edges. This creates that awkward angle with a weird space between the board, the table and your arms, that make it all feel smaller and less comfortable.
Both of these items are only good if you’re going to draw while sitting on the couch. Otherwise you should pair a iPad with a portable drafting table one that can sit on top of your computer table or work table. There are add benefits to using a portable drafting table: one pain in hour hands and elbow are reduced if not gone, two its portable and if you need disk space for something else it can be folded and place under the disk, three it cost less you can get one under $100 and as low as $35 depending on size. I personally have two, one I bought new with coupons for $30 and it was $75, the sound one I found at a thrift store for $10. If you’re not drawing on a couch or arm chair you shouldn’t buy the darkboard of sketchboard pro.
Thanks for your input. I enjoy them both on the couch and at my desk but a drafting table would be a good option as well, it’s just not ideal when using the iPad as a display tablet for my MacBook Pro.
Thanks Chris for that throughout review. I'm leaning into buying the Sketchpad Pro to be honest. Looking much better than Astropad but I might get the wrong idea. I Haven't checked your channel yet, but have you used the tips from Astropad? Would love to see your opinion on those. Appreciate your time and work you do!
Do you find yourself using the Sketchboard more than the ZUGU stand? Also, what is the measurement from bottom of the Sketchboard to bottom edge of the iPad? Thanks, Chris! :D
Hey sorry I missed this! I definitely draw with the sketchboard pro or the astropad Darkboard the majority of the time. The ZUGU case just goes back on the iPad when I’m going somewhere. I’ll have to double check on the measurements, but they just released a new one that is a little smaller.
I was going to buy the sketchboard, but I experienced an issue. I have an 11 inch 3rd generation iPad pro. The boards they sell aren't for that specific one. They have one for 3rd to 5th gens, but those are 12.9 inches. They also have one for 11 inch ones, but it's 4th to 5th gen. Which one do I get??
I don’t have a ton of experience with the 11” iPads. I would see if you can find the overall dimensions and compare them. The cradle that holds the iPad is a rubbery material so there is some flexibility. For example, they don’t technically make one that “fits” the new 13” iPad Pro yet, but mine works fine in the 12.9 version.
Amazing review thank you !! I have the sketchboard pro and I love the strength and stability of the legs. I can fully lean on it. The weird velcro foldy legs dont look nearly as sturdy. And if Im going to pay 100 dollars for something to support my drawing I want it heavy and strong. my 2 cents.
Never heard of the Darkboard, but I have been wrestling over if I should buy the Sketchboard Pro or Elevation Lab's DraftTable V2. I like the adjustability of the DraftTable but prefer to have somewhere to rest my arms/wrists. I am so undecided. I feel like only having one angle of elevation would be noticeably limiting, but maybe it is not as big of a deal as I am imagining. I guess I just need to take the plunge and buy one or the other..... Thanks for showing me another option, today!
I also have the elevation lab draft table and for me, the extra surface area provided by Darkboard and the Sketchboard Pro make the biggest difference. I never ended up using my DraftTable much, but I can’t imagine not using one of the other stands after experiencing the difference they make. The DB and SBP are at slightly difference angles and both are fine for me, but I might not be that picky. They both feel great.
Brand or review of magnetic desk stand for iPad? Where could I find info? Liking your videos. Giving Fresco a try and maybe moving all the way out of Procreate.
@chris you mentioned you have a promo code for the darkboard. Thinking about taking the after your video. 14:32 Could you share if you have it? Going to use your affiliate link fo sho since you’ve enlightened me.
The problem with the Sketchboard pro is the leg that cannot lock in portrait mode it’s really wobbly and the board is quite heavy . I’m a bit disappointed I wish we could upgrade hinges
Great video! I've been waiting for someone to compare these both and you've hit every question I'd ask 👍 Also, let me know if you come across that promo code you mentioned.
Glad you found it helpful! Unfortunately I was mistaken and I don’t have a promo code… I must have been thinking about something else. Sorry about that!

i love this video! is one of the most useful and in depth review i found and i really love such informative videos!! Thank you for been so helpful! But now i feel even more frustrated!! ive been looking for long now for a board for my ipad. But i can't afford any of them. I know good products come with higher price but is really frustrating when u can't afford it :( i tried a lot of alternatives. I even tried to build myself, which worked for a bit but not really. After an injury on my shoulder ive been told that i shouldn't even think to paint or draw ever again in my life. ( i am mainly an oil painter but love digital art also even if im still a beginner ) I tried digital first time because i couldn't move absolutely my arm. and i was slitly able to draw something at least with my fingers. Of course i didn't quit painting, and i did also fell in love for digital art. I had my first iPad 11 for my birthday this year. Is like an holy grail for me. I can't tell how much i love it! but is really frustrating sometimes that even when you need few accessorise they are so pricey ! anyway the most important is never give up
I’m so sorry to hear about your shoulder injury. Maybe if you keep a lookout you’ll be able to find a used one? I did see that there are cheaper “copies” of the sketchboard pro available. Have you seen any of those?
@chris-piascik thank you for your reply 🤗🤗 accident happened but the important is dont get discouraged!! I did teach myself how to paint with the other hand also, is not perfect but it helps a lot! Anyway I'm looking for it! Used one are not available and for now I didn't find any similar options 😕 at least here in uk. I will keep looking for it anyway 🤗 or i will buy a new original when i will be able to! never give up on dreams 💯💪
I used to use the 24" Wacom and I really prefer the experience working on the iPad. I also prefer drawing in Fresco which is iPad only on the Mac side.
@@chris-piascik Yeah I guess if that is what drives it then its just how it is. To each their own....its just funny how we as artists often circle back and forth and around and around to find that perfect fit regarding the tools and comfort level. I myself have been there; done that too. Just remember, when it comes to comfort that aides in your actual physical health,....software and hardware preferences should take a back seat. Sounds like you are certainly trying everything and anything to alleviate the pain/disconfort and prevent near future negative health ramifications and damage. That being said, glad you have found a temporary solution with that accessory! That might be the ticket!
Aint no way I’m paying 120 for a piece of foam…….💀 or paying 149 dollars for a piece of plastic that gets grease marks…….i bet the foam one takes 5 bucks max to produce and for the plastic one it’s may be 15 bucks still way to damn expensive. I would recommend everyone to learn wood working and cut one out and making it custom
Well, once in production I imagine they are fairly cheap to produce-but not as cheap as if there were huge numbers. This is a niche product so the cost per item would go for smaller runs. That said, the mold that would needed to make the product would be very pricey-and that doesn't take into account the design and development. Learning the woodworking skills to make something like this would certainly take more than an hour-and my hourly rate is higher than the cost of the product. But even if I did build one out of wood I'd have a much heavier, less comfortable iPad drawing board.
@@chris-piascik I forgot you draw on your lap. most people draw on their desk with these drawing boards so in terms of weight and being comfortable it doesn’t really matter. And learning the woodworking skills are not only useful for a drawing board but for just about anything. in terms of hourly it would pay for itself. no matter what you can’t justify paying $120 for foam It’s ridiculous. Design….. it’s literally a cut out in a piece of foam. Molds are made pretty cheap…… honestly they are ripping people off and it’s hilarious. Max it should cost is around 50 bucks and that’s pushing it.

I think they're both great. I did do a review of the the new Astropad Tips: ua-cam.com/video/KxpMF8OI2Hw/v-deo.html
@@chris-piascikBought the Astropad version. I've picked the rock paper pencil tips also. Thanks Again!
I LOVE MY DARKBOARD!!!!!!!
Cool, me too!
Those look pretty great. Cintiq guy for about 17 years now. I could see myself using the iPad Pro more with the sketchboard. I like those feet.
Yeah, it definitely feels a lot more like a cintiq now. I love it.
I love my sketch board pro. I have the white one and it’s not shiny at all fyi.
Oh cool! I think I'm jealous then. The white one looks awesome.
There’s a new model coming out December/January, smaller and lighter. Might wait for that one.
I preordered one already, ha.
for which model?

And if Im going to pay 100 dollars for something to support my drawing I want it heavy and strong. my 2 cents.
Glad I could help!
I have been using the Sketchboard Pro for a while now. DONOT BUY the funky CASE, useless.
I did a review of 2 magnetic desk stands here: Drawing on an iPad is Dangerous!
ua-cam.com/video/O_0R886_jTE/v-deo.html
Not sure what the funky case is!
@chris you mentioned you have a promo code for the darkboard. Thinking about taking the after your video. 14:32
Could you share if you have it?
Going to use your affiliate link fo sho since you’ve enlightened me.
I’m sorry I thought I had one but I was thinking of something else…
No worries. That new tattoo do be poppin though man.
Does the sketch board come in size for iPad 11”?
I believe it does.
Has anyone gotten the Storyboard 2 to see if the legs unfold differently
Me! The BEST iPad upgrade for artists.

Much appreciated
👍
Cool accessory
Agreed!
The problem with the Sketchboard pro is the leg that cannot lock in portrait mode it’s really wobbly and the board is quite heavy . I’m a bit disappointed
I wish we could upgrade hinges
Those are valid issues.
I DIDNT EVEN KNOW THESE EXISTED!
Hah I don’t know what took me so long to try one.
Wich one is better?
Did you watch the video? I sort of think they both have their strengths. Both are a great improvement over just using the iPad.
@@chris-piascik yes but I’m not native English speaker.thanks✌🏻
Great video! I've been waiting for someone to compare these both and you've hit every question I'd ask 👍 Also, let me know if you come across that promo code you mentioned.
Glad you found it helpful! Unfortunately I was mistaken and I don’t have a promo code… I must have been thinking about something else. Sorry about that!
I looked u p the prices here in Australia.. the sketchbook pro started at least twice the price to over $300.00. Not including shipping. It makes things so unaffordable 😔😔😔😢
Oof that’s a bummer. I wonder if any one the generic ones on Amazon are any more affordable?
You are missing a file at 4:10
Hmm how can you tell?
@@chris-piasciksometimes when you move the original files before exporting the video it shows that missing file error message. It's really short so I thought you might have missed that little detail
@@erwinmoreno23 ah yeah I definitely missed that!
Those aren’t vesa mount holes?
I don’t think so
Even If i get one I feel like nothing will compare to my beer belly
Lol
i love this video! is one of the most useful and in depth review i found and i really love such informative videos!!
It wil be interesting if the rumors are true and Apple is coming out with a bigger ipad pro this spring.
Is it the spring now? Last year I heard “fall”.
push the charger through first, plug it in and then slide the ipad in
Thanks, that’s a good tip.
a timber one would be nicer.
Found it!
👍👍👍👍
I wish the sketchboard had lockable legs. Those things feel so flimsy and if you move the board around, on a table, the legs always collapse.
🎉❤ my jai alai elbow will now have an opportunity to heal 😅
Hah is that a thing too??
Haha very rare
make a magnetic skin for the sketchboard and ipad. problem solved for it falling out
Great tip. Thanks.
The sketch board cost over 50% more now so replacing the first dark board is almost a wash, and you can resell it or give it to someone.
Ooof, I looked at the price though, and I can't help but pulling an Angry Video Game Nerd "130 DOLLARS for a f***ing piece of plastic!?"
Haha it’s a bit pricey, but honestly the amount it improves my life is well worth it. For me at least.
Here's a thought,...scrap the tiny iPad for art and get a 16" Wacom. It not only feels bigger it IS bigger. Done!

Y’all are insane for paying 120 for foam….. 😂

darkboard looks good but .... WHY tf is is $120 lol
