The most underrated feature in this game is the Codex Entries.
You get the entertaintment value in multiplayer but also the history of WW1 and its weapons, factions and equipment if you choose to dig deep.

As ridiculous as the Mark V was when you look at it in a vacuum, it was positively sane compared to what the Germans did, put a tractor in a metal box, or what the French did, putting a metal box *on* a tractor (twice, the second one existing to spite the first one) even though Renault basically had a workable prototype of what would become the venerable FT.

The British design team has an continuing tradition of pouring their top quality tea into their blueprints of highly experimental armored tractor and then says " *F*ck it if it looks like it would work, then it will work. Trust me mate..* ", it did work fine in the battlefield and the Germans decided to capture hundreds or more British tanks who quickly realized that capturing the British tanks was much more efficient than producing their own tanks.. *And then proceed to make their own tanks and made it for better and for worse.*

I would have to kindly disagree with you. I feel that the ship was the most useless one, only being a glorified mortar to annoy the enemy team with. The airship and the Char 2C tank were kind of useful though. You could navigate them to points and cap them and also clear out bottlenecks and resistance on the point. The train was dubious, on the one hand it could cap at least one point usually, but again it was a bit of a glorified mortar usually hanging back in a safe place instead of pushing the front line for your team.
All in all, the concept of the behemoths were cool but the implementation of them was quite flawed.

One aspect I don’t think was brought up enough was the presentation. HOLY SHIT, no other FPS game has an atmosphere like BF1. The sound design is exquisite. The voice acting is fantastic. (Look up how they made the German voices, it’s really impressive.) The hail of gunfire, the screams of soldiers, the boom of explosions, and the grinding engines of vehicles. When the music kicks in, it’s go time, either because you’ve taken the point and your characters all scream as the whistles blow and you all charge the next point, or defense is about to win and the horns are BLARING for the last stand or desperate push. Each map looks gorgeous. Caporetto, Monte Grappa, Nivelle Nights, Somme, Verdun Heights, and so, so many more. From bombed out towns that will be left even more bombed out by the end of the match, to No Man’s Land with trenches and wrecked buildings lining the barbed wire hellscape, giant forts, and the most gorgeous vistas to ever die on. And all of it is enveloped by and drowned in absolute chaos, and oppressive brutality, and I love it.

The reason why I like this game is simple. When I've started it for the first time, it threw me into the battle... it told me - "You are not expected to survive.", managing my expectations. This is why, despite being absoluely horrible at this game - I have never EVER been frustrated with losing... because the game simply communicated to me - "You are part of the war machine. You are just a soldier, a spec of dust. You are not significant, you will die anyway."
This set the way I've approached the game. Instead of wanting to be high on the leaderboards, I have instead played like I was truly that soldier on that battlefield. I was hiding, I was trying to sneak up on the enemy, I was avoiding combat to survive as long as I've could. Despite my best efforts I was never able to survive longer than 3 minutes. When I've got kills, they truly felt like victories, so despite having ratio of 5 kills to often upwards of 10-15 deaths, I still felt like I've accomplished something.

The game is still doing well on its native PC and there are at least 1-2 full matches on either console for the three titles for the series. It’s just the sad proof that a historical fps will not do well unless it’s a fast-paced run n gun with goofy blinged out camo(not to mention it’s just 5-6 Dutch guys in a rented out studio and not a AAA title with thousands of employees, also I know BF I doesn’t fall into that category and both games were fun). When you look that it through that lense it’s more impressive what they did come out with. Also dudes using pre-2020 footage which the current form the game is in is actually pretty well polished looking now. The game went through several graphics updates over a period of near on a decade and a half.
This is no hate towards BF I, I equally enjoyed both it and Verdun for what they were and Operations mode absolutely knocked atmosphere and immersion out of the park. Especially with the pre-battle speeches of your avatar sitting in your first line trench and hearing your commanding officer shout over artillery and gunfire going off.

Every life has the chance to play out like a movie, and you can really tell how much care the devs put into the guns, sound design maps, balance classes etc. The only issues however would probably be the classic EA monetization schemes for dlc weapons and game version- which isn't really unique to the game, some weapon balancing, and grenade spam

One aspect of gameplay which wasn't mentioned in this video but is surprisingly fleshed out in the DLC maps is naval combat. You have torpedo boats, destroyers which come in two varieties and dreadnoughts, plus naval bombers equipped with torpedoes. At that time all countries were imperialistic, racist, anti semitic and they opressed minorities, in fact one could argue that Britain and Belgium were way worse than Germany.
It should've really had more war stories from all sides. I find it disturbing that the french, even though they had the 3rd highest military casualty rate (just behind germany and russia) were not represented. Same as the russians and their monumental effor to the war.

One thing as well that no one ever mentions when bringing up Battlefield 1, is the codex entries. You’d unlock them when using weaponry, gear, playing new modes, maps, etc. when unlocked, you’d be given historical information on said item you did if for. For example play on Fort De Vaux, unlock a codex explaining the actual battle for the fort during the Battle of Verdun. These little historical tidbits not only show people context for what they’re using or what they’re seeing, but get people interested in the overall game and conflict, as did I. It could be the entrance to the rabbit hole of learning about the First World War, what led to it, and the aftermath. To anybody who read this far, have a good day👍.

I think the war stories being cut short was actually a good design decision. When you're in the minute by minute, nitty gritty struggle of war; it feels like its consumed your entire life. Just like the stories do in the game. But when you zoom out, and truly think about it- your time spent in the field was naught but a blip on your life. 4 years isn't that much time, but in those 4 short years it felt like lifetimes. So why should the stories be any longer? Short blips, of ordinary people doing heroic things.
So they could make these stories longer, but they shouldn't.

The fact that DICE had help from Indy Neidell just to work on the game's codex entries was a rare moment for an AAA studio that is passionate about the WW1 setting.
It's a shame that BF1's level of glory was never carried on with BFV

Just as an extention of the single player, one must also commend the effort that went into the way around of Operations starts, with short unique introduction quips with accurate aaccents from the country you're fighting for. The photogrammetry tech and amazing sound design made this one of the most immervise Battlefiled - if not game ever created

The best memory with any of the campaigns was during the finale to “Friends In High Places” right at the start I see the airships and start going full throttle, not knowing there were enemy planes right ahead. So when both sides collide into a dogfight frenzy, I blew right past all of them yet almost failed the mission because in a moment of panic I hit two of the planes. Absolutely wonderful

10:30 it's also worth noting that the triplane that people associate with the red baron was actually the LAST plane he flew on. It crashed and he died. However, the soldiers that found him buried him with so much reverence and respect it's beautiful.

My best clips and killstreaks are from BF1 and I think that's when competitive FPS games peaked for me.
EDIT: Upon my endeavors to reinstall and replay the game I have had nothing but issues with EA and the net code. It took 2 & 1/2 hours and 3 different pakis to get any kind of results from technical support to reactivate my account. And once being able to play again, the net code is virtually unplayable to the point where I've had better input response from a PSNow cloud streaming game. (Keep in mind I've had a physical copy since 2017) Sad because there's still very clearly a lot of players but the servers are put on the back burner because we aren't BFV/2142 simps.
