Funny that UA-cam should recommend this to me today. I was looking through my great grandfather’s old stuff on the weekend and found a map that he had done of northern France in October 1918 (he has a note saying it was the last of the war). It’s an ordinance survey around Licques and Colembert (and surrounding areas). It shows trenches, gun emplacements, aa equipment, destroyed houses etc. it’s a fascinating piece of history and I hope to convince my mum to let me donate it to a museum/war memorial as it shouldn’t be left to rot in an old suitcase.
Friends in High Places is my favorite war story of the game. Growing up in southern Denmark, very near to the Zeppelin Hangars build by the German Empire when that part was still German, I grew up with stories of British air raids against it, and WW1 aviation in general. Thank you for a great video, I am looking forward for more.
Really appreciate the point you're making at the end of the Arditi section about the war as a whol. Would have loved to have seen the German and Austro-Hungarian sides represented for that reason!
One of the only downsides of the campaigns in my opinion. The opening speeches of the operations game mode for the Germans and Austro Hungarians are amazing.
cool thing about BF1 campaign is that every one of them is like the introduction of the game mechanics and map for the multiplayer (except the pigeon of course), pretty much like this year MW3 but better
I went back to this game a few days ago and I don’t know why I stopped playing. I love this game, it’s half of why I’m a history buff now, the other half being Sabaton. There will never be another FPS game as good as Battlefield 1.
5:00 The track extensions on the Mark V tank are called "spuds," and were used as a way to increase the tread width for better grip in muddy conditions. They were implemented on Mark II's and III's, but phased out from IV's and V's, as they had little impact on performance. Their inclusion on Big Bess is likely just a design choice. Fun fact: the Germans made their own version in WW2 called Ostketten (East Tracks) to tackle the Spring muds on the Eastern Front.
It feels illegal to be this early. But hell yeah! I absolutely loved your video of BFV. And this video is no exception. Keep up the amazing work, and I'm excited to see the next video you'll come out with!
The Runner is my all time favourte battlefield and even war story. So much emotion is shown through Bishop and the naive young digger he was charged with. Sadly that spirit and emotion has been eroded in modern times but i fully believe that that true blue aussies carry on that mateship and comradery with all parties involved in Galipoli, Tobruk and all other fronts across both world wars.
I loved the story in Battlefield 1, but as a Canadian, to see no Vimmy, Passchendaele, Flanders, or Rivier Somme, the battles that "made" my country made me kind of sad. even in multiplayer, we see no maple leaf graffiti, no maritimers charging trenches with nothing but a knife and bagpipes, and the only poppies are on the geographically nebulous Rupture map. (you know i instalock Somme as soon as it comes into the queue tho lol)
11:35 I always thought that the reason they chose to use the Mauser was because compared to a Revolver, It in video game terms, Feels Weaker. There was an event in a WW2 Video-Game once where despite different Animations, Sounds and Appearances all of the gear between Allies and Axis, The two were identical stats wise, But the sheer BEEF of the allied gear made their players so much more confident, It scewed things in their favour. So giving us a "PewPew" Mauser that, while in real life was equally as lethal, But in game terms isnt the "BANG!!! BANG!!!" Of a big-heck off Revolver, It probably to help us feel more out of our Element, smaller gun, less noise, Much more like a freshly recruited driver stumbling through the fog and woods trying not to get shot, Instead of badass action-man hero.
I like to think during the Avanti Savoia campaign that the narrator is again an unreliable one. The story is again told in past tense by a narrator whom you play as, though this time to his daughter rather than to the player. There's a part that stuck with me, one where his daughter expresses that she is worried simply hearing the story for the danger he had to face, to which he responds with something like "Don't worry! I was in a... a full suit of armor." Since you're playing as him while he narrates the story, it seems to imply that the crazy high HP your main character has simply by wearing that metal armor suit is not only a gameplay contrivance but also a narrative tool used to demonstrate the character's intent to "soften" the story for his daughter and not to frighten her. There's also the other exaggerations like the section where he somehow singlehandedly takes down like a dozen planes, survives a direct explosion, and wields a massive machine gun that he fires fully standing and mows down dozens of enemies. In other words, we play the embellished version of historical events that the character invented to make the story easier to tell to his daughter.
Every one fits into the unreliable narrator every one of them is a story, the exceptions being Through the Mud and Blood and Storms of Steel those two are flashbacks or nightmares, which keeps the unreliable narrator aspect but makes it so it's not intentionally being changed.
Have you heard of the Isonzo game? If not, it's a ww1 shooter similar to hell let loose, the one I have played is Specifically about the Italian front. I think it is a really fun game and that they portrayed the war and combat on the Italian front really well.
BF1 really captured the feel of the war, served in a way that, while still fantastical, is filled with accurate little details and emotions that really lands you in the shoes of those you play as. I'd argue it's the last great Battlefield, with passion behind the game that you can really feel as you play.
Some landships did have the little wider splits on the tracks to increase grip and rough terrain mobility, though it wasn’t a widespread modification and quite a rarity Also, I’m not sure if the A7V could be considered a “well made tank”, good video though! The bomber looks like some Handley-Page or Vickers design
I bought this game recently and if you pick it up on steam when it’s on sale it’s like 6$. Totally worth it for the campaign alone. My question is what multiplayer servers are best to join? I know some other BF games are having serious hacker problems and don’t really want to deal with that. Thanks
I’ve never seen the spades on the tracks anywhere other than battlefield. That doesn’t mean they don’t exist, but I’m not sure of the use. I can’t imagine they would give better traction, but they would certainly deter boarding parties.
The tanks are weird in this game as all the tanks are modelled as male tanks but can fire the machine guns as a female when you use them. The bits sticking off the side of the tracks are called spade grips. They gave the tanks a bit more traction but were prone to bending or breaking and very rarely used although this game has them on every tank.
22:00 Yes, that is true. The main reason pilots painted their aircrafts is because of The Red Baron, Richthoffen himself: For whatever reasons, one fine day I came upon the idea of having my crate painted glaring red. The result was that absolutely everyone could not help but notice my red bird I have read his book... He was an exceptional pilot, but a horrible writer.
Not nearly enough Frederick Bishop praise in these comments. I know the other stories are great, but in my eyes Frederick Bishop is perhaps the greatest character to grace a battlefield campaign
I think it’s worth saying that BF1 does have a codex, which does contain the history for said history buffs but also has to be battlefield. I also don’t know why people fuss about historical inaccuracy like Frosty 1. If they want accuracy, play something like Izonso that was hand crafted to be as accurate as possible.
I dont know if anyone else would like to see this, but I'd absolutely love to see a defensive and attacking game mode. Where the defenders cant push forward and can only retreat if they need to and fall back to a different capturepoint that becomes visible to each team when the previous point has been captured. And the attackers can just come at them in waves or be sneaky and flank or something like that. I feel like this would be so cool especially if your the last on your team defending and you have to make a last stand that would be so cool. Gajin could do this for alot of maps and reuse the currents ones i was thinking something like urban maps. Id love to see something like this. AND NO CAS. Also side note id love to see more realistic voice lines and reactions to getting hit or if theres a tank in front of you the crew sounds panicked and scream and shout in fear or something and react to being hit like "NO THE GUNNER BEEN KILLED" idk i just feel like that would be so cool and be a breath of fresh air and make the game feel so much more immersive and realistic
Your guy gets panicky when he sees a grenade land in front of him. Also, whenever you level up, other soldiers around you will say something along the lines of "Congrats on the promotion Sergeant!"
I dunno if you're aware of this but Operations and Rush are more or less this, Operations has people charging into new territories as they open up while defenders retreat need to set up again, and Rush does the same thing except you're arming comm stations to blow up I suppose the only real distinct difference is that Operations has entire groups of soldiers doing war cries when charging and has a narrator, while Rush doesn't and has altered frontlines to accommodate the mode
Ya know with bf1 they got very accurate with many things for a war that filter tried to burn away while bf5 was so badly made and run and it's the most documented war in known history
I would love to see a video about the maps and veichles in the multiplayer. Also battlefield 1 was'nt supposed to be 100% acurate. This is a direct quote from the lead game designer "we want to show what ww1 could have been what it could have looked like" thanks to that quote i treat bf1 as a sort of alternate history game.
Just as a heads up, you said you believe Avanti Savoia took place during the Battle of Vittorio Veneto, and it's true, the multiplayer mode Operations directly clarifies as such in Iron Walls campaign and goes over what might've happened if the Austro Hungarians won if that team wins It's a small thing but i like the speculative history that Operations did, some of it was appropriately pointless like clarifying that even if the Meuse Argonne Offensive failed Germanys defeat was still assured by that point eventually, or how the Russian civil war would've stopped in its tracks if the battle over Tsaritsyn had the Reds fail, but I always did wonder if there any other counterparts to be made as to what would've happened in Germany really did succeed with the German Spring Offensive or if the Gallipoli campaign went according to plan, i'm no history buff so I can't fathom much speculation on the subject
this comment is to address the "Friends in high places" being fiction I think not I think it is a mixed story between the arizona balloon buster Frank Luke Jr. who was known to not listen to superiors and would even fly his plane without orders on occassion who became famous for his unique knack for destroying observation balloons of which in a 17 day period between september 12 to the 29th he took down 14 and John Theodore Cuthbert Moore-Brabazon Who Pioneered Aerial Photography for reconnaissance purposes and became famous for flying a plane upside down for higher quality more "top down" pictures although the truth of this fact is debated.
Ottomans didn't have any flamethrowers in ww1. I totally understand that it exists in multiplayer but they shouldn't have added it for the campaign for Gallipoli.
This is the last great BF game, or for that matter, the last BF game made with most of the original developers. After this game, it's all downhill. By the by...great work on this content.
Could you maybe check out Izonso because it is another ww1 game, and I am curious about its accuracy. Also I just recently fou d your channel and love your content!

Lesser known fact that even germany has not wanted to admit at the time, Woman in the German army were in the military in the trenches as medical staff. A "nomads land medic" Was a sub part when the time was needed. Their job was to grab wounded from nomads land during a battlefield attack or more commonly just after a attack of both sides during rest time. I know this becuse my great great grandmother was alive and was in the german army on the western front from 1914 to 1918 in the red cross. She be in the hospitals during the Spanish influenza virus from 1918-1923. She was stationed near the village of Longueval, then later between combles and grinchy. Those were the times of the war she was in the front lines in combat. Sence you know history, maybe you can place this Time line?

Thank you for a great video, I am looking forward for more.
Ah yes my favourite the germans Sending the ottomans A french tank that they don't even have reliable ammo.Four
I absolutely love your Style of Video and Commentary
Really appreciate the point you're making at the end of the Arditi section about the war as a whol. Would have loved to have seen the German and Austro-Hungarian sides represented for that reason!
One of the only downsides of the campaigns in my opinion. The opening speeches of the operations game mode for the Germans and Austro Hungarians are amazing.
cool thing about BF1 campaign is that every one of them is like the introduction of the game mechanics and map for the multiplayer (except the pigeon of course), pretty much like this year MW3 but better
You can call an artillery strike with a pigeon if you have the right loadout in multiplayer.
Lol watched your BFV video for the first time yesterday, and now this drops, nice
I went back to this game a few days ago and I don’t know why I stopped playing. I love this game, it’s half of why I’m a history buff now, the other half being Sabaton. There will never be another FPS game as good as Battlefield 1.
I wouldn't say it was that good, but it was quite alot of fun, and they did what no one else could at the time, even today cod hasn't tried a ww1 game
5:00
The track extensions on the Mark V tank are called "spuds," and were used as a way to increase the tread width for better grip in muddy conditions.
The Runner will forever hold a special place in heart
as an aussie, the one thing that pisses me off more is that EA had the balls to put us in fights we weren't in
Frosty 1 and Reto both upload Battlefield 1 on the same day ?! Must be a good day!
Thank you my friend! I absolutely like your reactions, insights and so on. Keep up the good work my friend!
Thanks, will do!
I was in a... a full suit of armor."
Since you're playing as him while he narrates the story, it seems to imply that the crazy high HP your main character has simply by wearing that metal armor suit is not only a gameplay contrivance but also a narrative tool used to demonstrate the character's intent to "soften" the story for his daughter and not to frighten her.
Storm of steel is still the best intro to a game ive played. Do many of the quotes from this game i think about often
The tank theread things are called grousers i believe, theyre there to hive the tracks a better grip and allow the tank to climb steeper slopes.
Have you heard of the Isonzo game? If not, it's a ww1 shooter similar to hell let loose, the one I have played is Specifically about the Italian front. I think it is a really fun game and that they portrayed the war and combat on the Italian front really well.
I have and love it! Played Verdun a lot too
@@retro_today I've only played the Italian front so far. I do want to get the other games to see how they play.
BF1 really captured the feel of the war, served in a way that, while still fantastical, is filled with accurate little details and emotions that really lands you in the shoes of those you play as. I'd argue it's the last great Battlefield, with passion behind the game that you can really feel as you play.
I had tears in my eyes playing this campaign for the first time. It was so good
I never thought about Friends in High Places being made up by our character and that is an answer as to why it’s not historically accurate. Brilliant
Some landships did have the little wider splits on the tracks to increase grip and rough terrain mobility, though it wasn’t a widespread modification and quite a rarity
Also, I’m not sure if the A7V could be considered a “well made tank”, good video though! The bomber looks like some Handley-Page or Vickers design
Lets be honest the A7V was a bad tank even for its time, and the Germans knew it. They hardly built any and much preferred to use captured MK V's.
I bought this game recently and if you pick it up on steam when it’s on sale it’s like 6$. Totally worth it for the campaign alone. My question is what multiplayer servers are best to join? I know some other BF games are having serious hacker problems and don’t really want to deal with that. Thanks
There’s several Japanese servers still active in the late hours on weekends.
Kinda late reply but I just use the server browser and join any US conquest server, theres like 8 of them that are always full
The little grips on the tracks of the MK V were actually used in WWI, and they were for better traction if they got stuck in the mud.
right at the start the protrusions on the tracks are for a higher surface area to distribute weight so the tank doesn't sink as much in the mud
You need to get your hands on Black Ops 6 to cover the Gulf War. Great video
I saw a comment on another video that said "bf1 is what would have happened if ww1 continued into 1920" which is actually a pretty good description
Im a bit sad you didnt review the intro of storm of steel
Whoa i was just rewatching your battle field V video and decided to check again if you did a Battle field 1 video. Guess im right on time
The warner and swasey scope reticle is wrong too it's supposed to be a very thin cross hair with windage marks on the side instead of the post design.
beautiful work, i subbed
I’ve never seen the spades on the tracks anywhere other than battlefield. That doesn’t mean they don’t exist, but I’m not sure of the use. I can’t imagine they would give better traction, but they would certainly deter boarding parties.
The tanks are weird in this game as all the tanks are modelled as male tanks but can fire the machine guns as a female when you use them.
The bits sticking off the side of the tracks are called spade grips. They gave the tanks a bit more traction but were prone to bending or breaking and very rarely used although this game has them on every tank.
and every armored trains in game are the same model, just painted diferently
22:00 Yes, that is true. The main reason pilots painted their aircrafts is because of The Red Baron, Richthoffen himself: For whatever reasons, one fine day I came upon the idea of having my crate painted glaring red. The result was that absolutely everyone could not help but notice my red bird
I have read his book... He was an exceptional pilot, but a horrible writer.
Kinda dissapointed he didn't talk about storm of steel. That was the one where I was most curious about historical accuracy.
keep it up great content
looks like another legend video
Not nearly enough Frederick Bishop praise in these comments. I know the other stories are great, but in my eyes Frederick Bishop is perhaps the greatest character to grace a battlefield campaign
God being in that tank sounds like torture, I'd rather just be infantry, but even in WW1 that's not much better i guess.
I think it’s worth saying that BF1 does have a codex, which does contain the history for said history buffs but also has to be battlefield.
I also don’t know why people fuss about historical inaccuracy like Frosty 1. If they want accuracy, play something like Izonso that was hand crafted to be as accurate as possible.
thanks for appreciating the indian effort
They should really expand further on the Sikh contributions. I've looked into this stuff on my own. We're missing a whole campaign
Were there even Australians at Cape Hellas?
Also, have you played conquest assault? It's pretty similar to what you described.
@liammccarthy4654 yes haha. This is what was at the back of my mind when typing this
I dunno if you're aware of this but Operations and Rush are more or less this, Operations has people charging into new territories as they open up while defenders retreat need to set up again, and Rush does the same thing except you're arming comm stations to blow up
I suppose the only real distinct difference is that Operations has entire groups of soldiers doing war cries when charging and has a narrator, while Rush doesn't and has altered frontlines to accommodate the mode
Uhhh, is not that literally Operations?
Hey you did BF1 that's awesome!
We need a Call of duty WW2 next pls
I love your content
Ya know with bf1 they got very accurate with many things for a war that filter tried to burn away while bf5 was so badly made and run and it's the most documented war in known history
I wood love to see you do a videos on isonso and hell let loose
I would love to see a video about the maps and veichles in the multiplayer. Also battlefield 1 was'nt supposed to be 100% acurate. This is a direct quote from the lead game designer "we want to show what ww1 could have been what it could have looked like" thanks to that quote i treat bf1 as a sort of alternate history game.
Mission "Nothing is writte" is the most one sided story of the game and how on gods green earth Ottomans have tanks artilary trains and more
I assure you that if you go straight over a trench near the frontlines and just run straight in multiplayer you will get shot within 10 seconds lol.
Just as a heads up, you said you believe Avanti Savoia took place during the Battle of Vittorio Veneto, and it's true, the multiplayer mode Operations directly clarifies as such in Iron Walls campaign and goes over what might've happened if the Austro Hungarians won if that team wins
It's a small thing but i like the speculative history that Operations did, some of it was appropriately pointless like clarifying that even if the Meuse Argonne Offensive failed Germanys defeat was still assured by that point eventually, or how the Russian civil war would've stopped in its tracks if the battle over Tsaritsyn had the Reds fail, but I always did wonder if there any other counterparts to be made as to what would've happened in Germany really did succeed with the German Spring Offensive or if the Gallipoli campaign went according to plan, i'm no history buff so I can't fathom much speculation on the subject
this comment is to address the "Friends in high places"
being fiction
I think not
I think it is a mixed story between the arizona balloon buster Frank Luke Jr. who was known to not listen to superiors and would even fly his plane without orders on occassion
who became famous for his unique knack for destroying observation balloons of which in a 17 day period between september 12 to the 29th he took down 14
and John Theodore Cuthbert Moore-Brabazon Who Pioneered Aerial Photography for reconnaissance purposes and became famous for flying a plane upside down for higher quality
more "top down" pictures
although the truth of this fact is debated.
12:39 i woud say you can give the weapons a pass because after all it had to be fun for normal players
Its a shame that we didn’t have an campaign on the french side
Possibly scaled up Fe2 twos
Ottomans didn't have any flamethrowers in ww1. I totally understand that it exists in multiplayer but they shouldn't have added it for the campaign for Gallipoli.
Wasn't the italian campaign located on Monte Grappa?
good video
This is the last great BF game, or for that matter, the last BF game made with most of the original developers. After this game, it's all downhill. By the by...great work on this content.
Could you maybe check out Izonso because it is another ww1 game, and I am curious about its accuracy. Also I just recently fou d your channel and love your content!
Attaataa boyyyy what a. Video
Can you do another one with the DLC?
is the multiplayer in this game still running or is it overran with bots
Great content as always retro battlefield is way better than call of duty world wars have you busted or reacted to call of duty world of war or call of duty world war 2 yet retro?? 😊
honestly i might have to stop watching this, get the game and play the missions myself before coming back - waiting for a sale :D
Call of duty WW2 next?
Yeeeeeeaaaah we got ww1 baby
So retro gaming which game do you prefer battlefield 1 or 5 and why??
Am I mistaken or are you thinking this is the the 1918 battle of Cambrai? I am certain it's supposed to be the 1917 battle.
Petition to continue calling versions vehicles like tanks males and females
Ah when most games were good, fun times.
please do cod WW2 or world at war next 🙏
Lesser known fact that even germany has not wanted to admit at the time, Woman in the German army were in the military in the trenches as medical staff.
A "nomads land medic"
Was a sub part when the time was needed.
Sence you know history, maybe you can place this Time line?
damn been waiting.. pretty cool. happy 4 this. wait maybe try SE games. more so SE5 because its 'better'. but its somewhat repetitive and long campaigns
SE?
@@AmyCherryLMAO sniper elite
@@ThundrRblx oh yeah i kinda enjoyed the little ive played of sniper elite 3, though i do love their work in zombie army
What about valiant hearts
Missed the best mission
The history in all the missions is poor. But the Gallipoli one is just insultingly bad. Giving Helles to the ANZACs when they were nowhere near it. Helles also looks nothing like it does in the game. The geography is almost completely made up. I've been there and walked the ground. Still puzzling over where these mountain ranges came from
Can you do cod ww2
This reviewer obviously never played verdun
Historian??? So you were there 😮. How was it, I bet it was scary
first comment
Dude became a reaction channel smh
Yep
I think the game was alright, but it doesn't feel like an WW1 game AT ALL. Same with BF5 and WW2. Please stop pretending that these games represent historic events in any way.
