The Terminator has such a beautiful story, only built for two years yet its very existence paved the way to the supercharged monsters we have today. It's already a collectable but in 20 more years good examples of these cars are going to be selling for no less than $150k
Should have mentioned the iron block was specifically chosen because after testing the connecting rods for so long, they had no time to test an aluminum block. Also the super stallion would have been a great example of the testing of a supercharged Mustang before the terminator. Important to mention 2002 was not a Cobra year, because the Terminator was taking up all of SVTs time, and 2000 was skipped because they were fixing all of the underpowered 99s.
No both here are wrong. In the book iron fist, lead foot the team specifically chose iron for strength. The then factory produced WAP block was not able to withstand the svt/ford longevity and durability testing which was brutal on a supercharged application. The Rods which svt was forced to outsource to manely was primarily due to ford not having been able to produce a powdered metal rod that could withstand testing mentioned earlier.

I started watching this channel for the Explained series and the work that's put into each one shines through consistently. Good job 337 Speed, there's a reason people keep coming back to watch your episodes.
The 2013-14 gt500 that the hellcat and subsequent redeye was made to beat still accelerated faster than the redeye despite having only a manual transmission and over 100 less horsepower.
Would’ve been nice to see this new GT500 still have a 5.8 with Predator technology. There is no forgiveness for the Mach e. If it had a different name there would’ve been nothing to forgive
The Mach E is a stain to the Mustang name ..... Specially since the original Mustang was a Piston Powered Plane..... Not a Damn Electric Sewing Machine......
Really what Ford needed was the 4.6 to be a 5.0 or something along those lines. Then have every engine in the family bumped up in displacement relative to that.
*"Predator technology"?* Omg you guys are nothing but sick fucks. Praying on children like that. The first motor company should be sure and canceled for this!
Top notch video. I would have bought a 2010 GT500 back in the day, but they kept delaying the release because they still had so many new 2009 GT500 on the lot. Actually ended up buying a Mach 1 this year, because I didn't want to pay $25,000 over sticker for the GT500.

the 6.2 ls3 based ZL1/CTSV supercharged engines along with the LS9 had a hand in the SRT engine development also, establishing the 6.2L displacement baseline.
Why were terminator cobras so dominant? Well in an era of 275-325hp cars, Ford released a 420 horsepower mustang, rated it at 380hp and its also one of the easiest to modify platforms with massive aftermarket support. But what else were they gonna do when there were cammed LS1 cars breaking into the 10s with only baby shots of nitrous. 2003 was the era where you could still see actual 302 powered foxbodys. GTPs, single cammed civics and turbo AWD cars weren't quite taken seriously enough yet. 400 horsepower was a lot back then and when those things hit the streets it changed the game. I believe they are single handedly responsible for the horsepower wars of the late 2000s that eventually led to things like the C6 ZR1 and the Dodge Demon
I wouldn't say Terminators were so "dominant". I certainly think a C5 Z06 would have something to say about that, with its 3100lb weight and just as easy to modify if not easier. It was no slouch for holding power either, as there are plenty of procharged Z06s on stock bottom ends making reliable power. Again, they don't hafta make as much because of the weight advantage. But yes the Terminator is when any advantage the LS1 had over previous Mustangs disintegrated.
@@scottwilson1251 The cobra smoked the standard corvette in 03-04 and was just as fast as the zo6. As the video states, the z06 was $15k more than the terminator, so corvette loses there.

GM LS guy here and I loved this video. The LS engines absolutely crushed Ford until the release of the Terminator, which commanded respect. I'm always glad when Ford and GM trade blows because it just pushes them to produce better and better products for us consumers. Your CAD work is awesome btw and really makes the channel unique.
i believe it was bcuz Ford has never struggled for car sales so they test their limits with small motors n since the Mustang has always been lighter than it's rivals Ford never felt pressured to use the 5.4L more.. Also Ford loved going low compression which limited hp, 9.4:1 vs ls 10.9:1 is a huge bump..
LS1 had a 10.25:1 CR. LS6 was a 10.5:1 CR. It's a trip thinking how GM required you to run 91 octane or better in them, and today you've got engines like the EB running the same CR as a LS6 at like 12+ PSI's and it's rated to run on 87 octane. Hell a GEN 5 6.2L runs a 11.5:1 CR and GEN3 Coyote runs a 12:1 CR, and in the F150 it's even rated for 87 octane. Talk about pulling timing. And people wonder why GEN5 6.2L's and GEN3 Coyotes respond so well to E85 tunes. The fact of the matter is 3.552" is just too small of a bore diameter to try and make big N/A power with. I personally feel that a LS1/LS6's 3.898" bore diameter is too small to make for a great N/A, 2V engine. A 4" bore should be the minimum on a 2V engine. A LS2 with a 4" bore for example has noticeably more N/A potential than a GEN3 LS 5.7L engine, as does any 6L LS engine which all use a 4" bore. 6.2L is even better with a 4.065" bore. All these GM engines use the same 3.622" stroke BTW, so their difference in displacement comes from their respective bore diameters. I've always said Ford should make their Boss 6.2L into a DOHC engine. With a 4.03" bore that thing would be a N/A beast. Just look at how potent a GEN3 Coyote is with a 3.66" bore. BTW LS3 had a 10.7:1 CR, and LS7 had an 11:1 CR FWIW.
@@JROC734 Oh yes, I agree, times changed n thanks to all the computer stuff engines can be tuned in all areas, not just with a screwdriver n an ear..lol I'm adding TrickFlow 38cc heads n cams to my lil 2v P71, compression should go a bit higher to 10 something, hoping to at least be in the 13s n/a.. Not bad for a lil 281ci v8..lol Ppl don't understand compression, especially those comparing a fleet vehicle 2v to these new tech Coyotes..
The late 4th gen F bodies surprised me. I slept on em for awhile cus of the body styles, but I have grown to love em as styling has evolved over the last two decades. I think it's a testament to the LS1 though that it took a supercharger to beat it. I'd love to drive a Terminator though, I know they've got to be fun cars.
The 4.6 2V became my FAVORITE Mustang because of the legacy of the Supercharged 4v in the Cobra. New Edge Mustang is one of my dream cars and I'm proud to say I own one! Next is a Cobra.
One of my subscribers told me I had a small cameo in this video lol wow what a great informative video 🔥 definitely subbed after watching this. This is the reason I made that video is to show (somewhat a comparison) of how the cobra was dominating back then. Thanks again brother, great channel.
Always good to see the big 3 fight over HP like back in the pony days - 50's 60's 70's and then again in the 80's 90's 2000's...... Now its all gonna be about "how much battery do you have" :)
The electric craze will be the same. Different batteries, speed controllers, motors, and of course ducting to cool all that hot stuff. Should be fun for the ones that have the $$$ and knowledge.
The Terminator is the one to have and is just raw "seat of the pants" kinda ride. the GT500's were better cars with each new model which has culminated in the technological wonders they are today. The problem is all that sophistication will be a double edge sword trying to keep the car on the road as the years pass. The Cobra is actually a fairly simple car to work on.
Dude I’ve compared you to donut before but I’m almost thinking you’ve surpassed them Nothing was like science garage and you brought it back around like never before
The stock mustang supercharged engines are already insane, but what’s even more nuts is how many people will pick up a 5.0 coyote, put hellion twin turbos or a whipple supercharger on, and easily dominate the streets. And the mustang is still one of the most modable platform ever.
In 2001, john colleti was driving the 2002 cobra prototype and lost a race to an SVT focus. A livid Colleti pulled over on the side of the road, threw 6 cans of dog food at the car then proceeded to change the very definition of what a muscle car is.
@@dpierson489 different engine entirely. It was a one off SVT V-10 that never made it’s way into the 05 Ford GT. Shared zero with the production units seen on trucks.
If we’re being technical, the 1993 Lincoln Mark Viii was the blueprint for all of the supercharged and N/A 4 valve ford v8s that came along after it. It was the first Ford Production car with an all aluminum 32 valve 4.6 V8 making 280hp, in 1993.
GM had a 300hp DOHC 4.6 in 1993...in the Cadillac Allante. Why they gave up on it is beyond me. I guess they extracted much more HP per dollar from the Gen III LS V8's.

@@bricebarefoot3437 The problem with those Northstars is that they put studs for the heads that were too small and always ended up making the heads leak. The Camaro had at least as much HP as the Vette. The Vette had a choked down intake that hurt its power. The Camaros intake wasn’t perfect but it was better. The only reason the Vette was faster was the weight difference.
damn i love the whine of a supercharger. turbos are cool as hell no doubt and yeah they are usually better if you want ridiculous power, but i have always preferred supers for the noise and the more linear power delivery
My father worked on team mustang around the time the terminator came out, and was a program manager for the revised trinity gen S197 GT500. I love seeing this history of these incredibly beastly mustangs, and it makes my heart sing knowing how much involvment my family has had with it.
The reason i think that even low boost superchargers add so much power is just that NA has a volumetric efficiency of like 0.6-0.8 at peak power but with forced induction you can increase that to between 1-1.2 with low boost. Its that just the suction from moving the piston isnt enough and pushing the air even slightly into the cyclinder helps a ton with power.
The first cobras were heavily overrated on power, like you said. But a missed out detail was how Ford, trying not to make the same mistake, underrated the power output on the Terminator Cobra. Google will tell you it’s 390 crank horsepower. But many sources have said they dyno’d it bone stock when they first came out and the output was somewhere between 410-420 wheel horsepower. The Terminator cobras were heavily underrated from the factory which is why everybody thinks they’re slow.
They weren't "heavily overrated" they did make under advertised hp tho. It was because of casting issues within the intake manifold and some kind of restriction in the exhaust system. Basically all you gotta do is get your intake ported good and add an aftermarket exhaust which everyone does anyways and it'll make the same with those mods as an 01 would with those mods. They would fix them for you by porting your intake and changing the exhaust out on it. That was called "the fix" it wasn't stuff that couldn't be very easily fixed and it was made much more of a big deal than it should have been. The 03-04 dyno around 360-380 hp putting them solidly in the 430 hp range at the flywheel.
There were NEVER any "stock" Terminators putting down 410-420. If so, that was a extremely exaggerated dyno. Most put down 350-370 wheel. The car only traps 110-112, stock...which is still very fast.
Ford Mustang’s SN95 and New Edge were so legendary that their strong sales Terminated the Chevorlet Camero and Pontiac Firebird. Whilst fighting the Corvette their supercharged engine and strong sales pushed them into the sports car segment because they could not rest on pure engine power alone as a muscle car. Meanwhile, Dodge had to cancel Challenger chassis development just to focus on building a hellcat engine good enough to seal the throne in Horsepower Wars.
Ya agree to disagree. Camaros and TAs were outperforming Mustangs pretty much yearly outside of a few models from '93 till their last year in '02. Despite this, they couldn't outsell Mustangs and they never will. That's because of the Corvette. Think about it, Ford doesn't have another sports car competing against itself for buyers like GM has. And dont say the Ford GT that car is nowhere near affordable like Vettes have been in the past. It was pretty obvious that the Camaro was on the way out long before cars like the Termi or even Mach 1 came around.
the original cobra 4.6 just needed to have a new intake and some better bottom end (the aluminum couldn't take the heat). It honestly would have been better to beef up the original 5.0 pushrod (the one BEFORE the coyote) that could make some good power when tuned correctly. The 4.6 DOHC ended up being a good option later, and then moving to the 5.4 (triton) supercharged versions that made 300 or more HP standard (lightning/F150 Harley edition). Just like the older cast iron 2JZ and RB's that you could boost to the moon, the aluminum bottom ends from late 90's early 2000's were not as strong as you could make them now.
Stock Aluminum 4.6 blocks hold like 1200hp… and the teksid blocks can handle more. The block isn’t the issues the issue was the rods and pistons. Hell stock cast 4.6 cranks can reliably hold like 650..
@@sidsideways2828 by 2003 ford no longer had the Italian made teksid blocks and went to there own in house ones ( big cost savings ) which under testing would not hold the power with the supercharger so that’s why we have cast iron instead of aluminum in the 03-04 cobras
@@scottschaefer5291 dude it was NOT the block that made them not hold the power. You are right they no longer made the teksid but even the WAP (Windsor auto plant?) Blocks the 01 cobras and 03-04 Machs can take 1000 wheel pretty easily with better rods and pistons it was the RODS that wasn't holding up during testing NOT the block. They made the 03 cobra iron block WITH the forged internals for durability but the aluminum would have been plenty stout with those same internals.
Also the 4.6 dohc blows away the original 5 liter pushrod even in the original pre terminator spec. All you need is forged rods and pistons to make 700-1000 wheel...that is stock block and forged crank where on an old 5 liter you need forged piston and rods too plus forged crank and an aftermarket engine block over 500+ rwhp. The 4.6 4v is far better. It can also make 700+ with stock heads. Try that on an old 5 liter lol.
It took me a long time to appreciate the mustang, since it was and still is such a popular car I never really payed any attention to the car, that is until I got one for myself. My 2015 5.0 with the MT82 manual transmission is violent and scary as hell. At over 400+ hp to the crank it’s nothing special but damn is it a riot! But I think the saddest part for dodge owners is the fact that even with my manual Transmission holding the car back there hasn’t been a single stock 392 charger or challenger that could keep up with me in my 5.0. On top of a manual transmission i was also dealing with the coyotes known little misfire problem and was still wreaking dodges and even Camaros (sorry chevy guys, I know how it feels as I too love chevy more then ford). Being lightest out of the 4 cars mustangs are insane muscle cars these days, my s550 is again nothing special but I’ve gotta say I’ve only ever lost to ten speed mustangs, one 2017 mustang gt, and a 2016 Camaro running e85, with an intake, and tune. Givin that information people still don’t believe me when I say my car kept up with that same Camaro pretty damn well. I’d even go so far as to say if I had the same mods my s550 would of taken that 2016 Camaro with ease. My mods consist of cat delete and a tune and with just that I was set at the door of that Camaro and gaining ground even. But honestly I always asked the question of what makes the mustang so damn special. I have definitely figured it out, I’m not a one brand kind of guy, I can appreciate every brand name on the market today because they all have a respectable place in this world. But I’m for sure sold on mustangs, I’m even going to go so far as to build a 5.2L voodoo motor for my s550 5.0 because I just can’t part ways with my car as it’s become a permanent part of my family after proving itself to me as a bitchin car. My 06 Cadillac Escalade with a stage two cam, heads, cat delete, built 4L60e, and street tune will still 60ft my mustang in a drag race though lol 😂

Hell yeah buddy

I still have a VHS recording of Motor Trend with the Super Stallion and 2003 Cobra. Still own my Terminator since '05.
It was also for cost savings, when one Manley rod costs more than all eight of the rods ford usually used.
No both here are wrong. In the book iron fist, lead foot the team specifically chose iron for strength.
The then factory produced WAP block was not able to withstand the svt/ford longevity and durability testing which was brutal on a supercharged application.
The Rods which svt was forced to outsource to manely was primarily due to ford not having been able to produce a powdered metal rod that could withstand testing mentioned earlier.

the 6.2 ls3 based ZL1/CTSV supercharged engines along with the LS9 had a hand in the SRT engine development also, establishing the 6.2L displacement baseline.
That's still alot for today I'm over here tryna get 230+ hp out of my car. I don't need. A ton for rally racing. Especially as a beginner. But still
I wouldn't say Terminators were so "dominant".

@@bricebarefoot3437 The problem with those Northstars is that they put studs for the heads that were too small and always ended up making the heads leak. damn i love the whine of a supercharger. turbos are cool as hell no doubt and yeah they are usually better if you want ridiculous power, but i have always preferred supers for the noise and the more linear power delivery
Great video, very well put together and narrated. Fun to see my clip on the Terminator rods
In my opinion i still think even today the Terminator has the best sound.
Also the 99 cobra wasn't the first cobra. First new edge cobra yes but svt had been making cobras since 1993.
@@midnight347 yeah I know there wear cobras before 99 but they’re kind of irrelevant to the context of the video
There were NEVER any "stock" Terminators putting down 410-420. If so, that was a extremely exaggerated dyno. Most put down 350-370 wheel. The car only traps 110-112, stock...which is still very fast.
@@blokay_garage They weren't irrelevant to the video. The 96-98 Cobras had nearly identical engines, architecturally, as the 99-01 Cobras.
Man I love your Content and Supercharged V8 Mustangs
“Maybe we can forgive them for giving us the Mach-e.”
Pure Gold. A man with style is a very dangerous thing.
the original cobra 4.6 just needed to have a new intake and some better bottom end (the aluminum couldn't take the heat).
It was not the block it was the rods. The blocks were plenty stout.

I mean you're going to talk about LS guys swapping cams like they changed the entire car but its ok to throw a 2.3 liter supercharger on a Mustang or whatever it is.
@scottwilson1251 if you think just slapping a cam in the ws6 makes it as fast as a terminator even with just pulley/tune you're smoking crack. I love them both I really do but let's stay in the realm of reality here.
@@Bob-he7dl Did you conveniently miss the part about the intake manifold and heads? Lay off the meth.
Boosted Mustangs are truly amazing!
Great video I’m a die hard svt cobra fan
I miss my 04 competition orange coupe so bad. Best stang I’ve ever owned!
What a great channel. Great visuals and clips, sounbites and a wealth of technical data for car geeks. Would really like this but for motorcycles also
Great video and break down of these amazing cars. I have had various S550s. A 15 GT, modded, 18 GT, modded, a 17 & a 19 GT350. We now have a 22 GT for my wife, I am going to procharge hers and a 20 GT500, stock with a CAI. I need to dyno it. I have heard that they make close to 800 with a CAI. The GT 500 is unbelievable. I was worried that I would not like going from a manual to an auto, but the DCT is amazing. I just drive it in manual mode. Hope to see y'all around town. I'm in Lafayette as well.
The legendary 03-04 Stang SVT Cobra "terminator" was 1st factory supercharged Stang . *The hand-built DOHC 32V 4.6L V8 was designed /tuned to be supercharged! BIG difference. 6spd tremec stock* . Independent suspension. 6k sold in '03. 13k sold in '04. A limited edition monster. Potential was immense from these! Can't wait to get my hands on new Mustang Dark Horse i ordered 💯 #Cobra #terminator
Dear Ford…hurry up and bring back the Terminator!!!
I’ve been patiently waiting for the terminator, awesome videos!
The old Terminators are so fun to drive.
I love every single one of these episodes

I live in romeo michigan! Its a small town lol but i love it. Me and my buddies always go out to the road that leads to the ford proving grounds to rip our cars because the pavement is perfect and theres never any traffic out there :)
I bought a new 99 Cobra in 99 and remember the recall. I had a pro-charger supercharger put on it a few months later. That thing was a beast..
I’ve always thought mustangs sound the best and I grew up a GM guy.
I love the channel, you are making great content!
I've never been a Mustang guy and definitely never been a FORD guy but that 03-04 Terminator Mustang just gets my caveman car guy blood pumping like no other Ford.
Boosted coyote is no joke
twin turbo, big single turbo, supercharged, procharged whatever u want, a 5.0 wont disappoint
Coyote > any 4.6/5.4/5.8
Please do JLR engines that are found in the ftype.
Funny enough, the JLR V8’s were produced by Ford until 2020 and are in other vehicles such as the 2000s Ford Thunderbird, Lincoln LS and Aston Martin used a version of this engine until 2017.
@@RealAGuy this is the type of stuff I want to hear.
@@jonchapa5404 Me too, hope 337 covers this motor in the future.
Awesome engine having experienced the 4.2 supercharged and the 5.0 supercharged myself.
@@RealAGuy yeah I have an svr and want to figure out how to get more power out of it lol
@@jonchapa5404 I had an early 5.0 SC sport while one of my relatives had a 4.2 SC full size, haven’t looked much into the tuning scene for these motors but I’ll check it out.
I got a 45th anniversary stang. 60th anniversary trim got announced today. Crazy how time flies

Cool love this video. I can say l was on the fourth front of this trend. In the mid 90's l caught the bug & started throwing everything on my '92 foxbody but the kitchen sink. I did everything to the 5L engine except
stroking it. I opted 2 supercharge it & boy did l see crazy power gains. I went with the powerdyne super charger. It was recommended by Ford @ that time. It was cost effective & @ 9 psi made crazy power. With no intercooler. I just put on a bigger radiator. So much power went 2 the wheels l couldn't get traction. I would have had 2 upgrade the rear end. I could do burn outs in 2nd & 3rd gear. I got mad acceleration. I eventually got tired of always having 2 go through it & tighten everything up & eventually sold it. It was navy blue l don't know what happened 2 it but l regret selling my mustang. I loved that car.
In the 80’s corvettes already did that. The sledgehammer 880hp with a 254 mph top speed. Any v8 boosted decimates…..
That was turbos right? Not superchargers also he talks about Shelby gt350s being supercharged back in 1966 way before the 80s vettes.
