Wow - we've come full-circle. It used to be car manufacturers tried to minimize NVH. Now V-dub (and to be fair, the rest of the car industry) actually introduces NVH to gaslight its owners. "Ya hear that exhaust note? That's POWER baby!" You know, it could be worse - VW could've made a diesel Tiguan sound like a 24v Cummins. Hmm....Now that I think about it - that would actually be better! 👍
I remember if I tuned my radio to a specific frequency it would match the engine rpm. It was awesome! I used to love ripping around hearing this insane "engine sound" haha
You reminded me that in my GTI Mk 2 the AM radio wouldn't pick up any stations but it did amplify the engine noise like you said. It was funny as hell!
Just bought an R and I have to say I quite like the noise, people seemed to complain it was tinny, not sure if they've tweaked it for the latest WLTP model but mine sounds anything but tinny, it's deep and meaty. Each to their own and all that but I'm keeping mine on :)
I don't use the soundaktor, personally, but I don't think people really understand what it's for. It's designed to give the driver more feedback, allowing you to hear where you are in the revs (rather than keep looking at a rev counter) , the vibrations also add to the feel. It's not necessarily "fake", just amplified. They should've made an option to turn it off fully in the drive modes, instead of just eco.
@@sqike001ton that would affect everyone though, not everyone wants more noise. The manufacturers have to build the vehicle to suit most end users, not just gear heads. Also, as I stated, it's not only about the noise. The vibrations also give feedback, similar to the way harder bushings and motor mounts do. Luckily we have a solid after market.
I did that using the obd11 along with disabling the auto stop start and a few other things. After killing the soundaktor I found the car too quiet so I did the resonator delete and now to me it sounds perfect.
@Bicc OG Unfortunately it had that bullshit before I desoldered the worst offenders due to not being able to turn that shit off. I work on my computers, not stroke the meat while looking at it
@Bicc OG Lol, only light source I have on my pc are the PWR& HDD LEDs which I darkened so they not as bright. Case has no windowed side panel either, cooling is setup for low noise. I have zero interest in kitsch looking crap that lights up like a christmas tree.
Calling it "fake sound" is just wrong though. Because this system in the Golf doesn't generate anything that isn't there in the first place, but just amplifies the frequencies the engine generates. It makes it louder as it really is, but its not something entirely different. Fake sound would be just playing a V8 soundtrack while you're driving a four cylinder, like Ford does.
Sounds fun you could inject worn break noise for a week. Then a leaky weather stripping with wind whistle maybe a week of knocking and pinging. Switch it to sound like a Ford GT. Or a Shelby. And as a service tech you modify every car to run a different sound file. Sounds like so much fun!
I was amazed by how pervasive the noise is. When I turned it to zero the car, even when driving like Miss Daisy was in the back seat, was noticeably quieter.
I think a better description for this is "Amplified Engine Noise". The reason I say that is because the sound isn't fake - it's the actual engine sound but the system amplifies it via structural vibrations. Fake would be pumping in V8 sound or VR6 sound that doesn't originate from the 2.0T.
Just picked up a new GLI and looking forward to a "real" exhaust to be available for this new one. Thank you for this and sharing your ownership experience. I really do love that color for sure. Might do one for my next car in a few years depending on what the Mk8's look like.
Two interesting facts for me in this video: 1. I had no idea this existed.. crazy! Why not just make the engine and exhaust sound good.. without “faking it”?! 2. 1000th like, first time I ever did that!
VW could probably tune the soundaktor to reduce NVH by having it make vibrations out of phase from the real ones. I've heard this being done to quite submarines' radiated noise.
I've been thinking about adding my own version of this to my Mk4 12V Wagon. I drove around with the hatch propped open (large boxes in back) and the sound was incredible, but I got noxious fumes in the cabin too. I thought about putting a microphone near the tailpipe under the car, and wiring it into an auxiliary jack for the stereo. So, it wouldn't be "fake" sounds, just more of the real stuff in the cabin on a volume knob.
I imagine problem with mic is the road, tires and wind noises, but maybe with a lot of trials and the right mic insulation it works, also take into consideration the rainy days if you have any in your city
Focus ST comes with a physical “symposer” not a digital thing like this. Lots of us disconnect them. Was thinking of getting the pipe work rigged up to the rear of the car somehow. Had to drive with the tailgate open a few weeks back, and it sounded mad/awesome, (5 cyl, 3 inch turbo back, decat).
Unplugged that on my Mark6 as soon as I got it. If you have the dsg mark6 you can remove the cover by the pedals where the clutch pedal would’ve been in a manual and get all the turbo noises directly into the cabin. That worked much better than the soundaktor. Maybe the newer gens have a removable cover down there as well check it out
turbo 4 pots never sound good sadly.. regardless if you have it set to 100 percent or 0; if anything having that fake 5 cylinder noise pumped in to the cabin makes the sound a bit more interesting. Great video tho, and love the colour!
It sounds so much like a Subaru boxer motor with an exhaust, I used to have a 2010 sti. My close friend has a mk7.5R and used to let me rip in it all the time but now he’s in the army lol. Besides saving everything before changing anything, disabling the Soundaktor will be my first test and can't wait for it to be gone. I'll take an r32 over a golf r every day of the week. Sure the golf r has a little more power stock because of the turbo, but turbo that 3.2l VR and you've got some real power.
I think just about everyone who's into cars likes a good exhaust note, but if you wanna keep your car stock this isn't a bad idea. Personally I like driving around with the soundaktor on, it reminds me of when I drive my straightpiped supra that isn't brand new and doesnt have a warranty lol

I disconnected mine on the GTI, just with a plier, 3 minutes I was done, only if I knew it was that easy, however the golf r might be a little more complicated
First thing I did on my 2017 GTI. I had forgotten about it until I drove in my neighbor’s R. Best mod you can do. I did mine the old school way and unplugged it. I never plugged it back in when trading it.
the stickers/labels being placed on car side windows these days is getting out of hand. why, why, why??? That's the biggest one yet I've seen on a car. I wonder how much cheaper the car would cost w/o the soundakator? It is a zero value adder yet it's there adding complication and disrupting the natural/pure essence of the car. Thanks Charles, info appreciated.
Good job Aaron, I mean Charles. LOL, kidding. I actually disconnected mine on my GLI a year ago. Unfortunately I had to cut the cable since I couldn't get my arm under the cowl with enough clearance to disconnect. Still, it sounds better than fake engine noises and vibrations.
I'm surprised that a German manufacture would even consider that. I lived in Germany for 5 years (and I'm married to one) Germans like things quiet. No mowing on Sundays for example, no commercial trucks are allowed to run on Sundays, and stock exhaust is a must. In fact the city of Karlsruhe will no longer allow any diesel automobiles in the city limits. Other cities will follow, but that's more for emissions. Anyway, great to learn something new. Thanks!
Just thinking back to the time of R32 and R36.. Now there´s an engine. I have a 2017 Passat GTR with 280hp 2.0 liter engine, and I´d trade it anyday for a R36, even if they stopped making them back in 2010.
Fake engine sound is sad. I love my LS7. The Z06 sounds rumbly and amazing. My wifes STI sounds great too but we had to remove a ton of baffles to extract the pure turbocharged sound.
Yeh I agree, it is quieter but sounds more authentic. Still, I think it sounds good for a turbo 4. Thanks for sharing, considering an R MK7 for a daily down the road.
I love the car reviews where they are doing all kinds of things to evaluate the engine noise. And think they are finding significant data on engine performance based on what they are hearing. Have half a mind to share a link to this video in their comments.
just turned off yesterday, now is a bit quiet but pure exhaust than the fake burble. In fact i like the burble soundtracks from soundaktor but it seems a second late. My new 2.0 tfsi engine cannot beat the real sound of my old 1.8 engine though:)
Wow... I'm stunned., You know its hard enough not to be paranoid on every squeak , rattle and groan that you THINK you hear on an older auto (B5.5 TDI manual trans conversion here) - now you have to worry about what is either being masked (on purpose?) or 'simulated' to really mess with your perception. When did style gain a lead over substance in VW?
I enjoy the soundaktor in the summer sometimes just because it sounds good, but in winter it must be deactivated. The rattling in the dash is unbearable at cold temps. It's a very easy thing to adjust in obd 11 so I just turn on the sound in the hot summer for a day, get tired of it and turn it off again.
N1, mr beard man 😁. My mechanic turned it off today, and the sound is soo much better! Thank you for this! Btw, with the fake sound turned off, is there a difference between comfort and race sound now? Thanks in advance.
That’s why I prefer V8 cars with real sound. For the future I’m hoping for hot hatches to get better sounding engines than the standard inline 4. Maybe 270 degree twins, t-plane triples or crossplane inline 4s would do the trick...they all sound bad ass that’s for sure. 👌
Great tip. I never understood why this was added. Designing a quality exhaust system with a great sound should be part of any performance car design. I guess soon none of this will matter when we go electric. We will be adding this to cars to remember the way the classics sounded. Imagine using VAGCOM to add the classic sound of a 2002 R32 to your 2030 e Golf GTI.

There is another video that shows how, no fault codes besides the o2 sensor 😉
First thing I did on my 2017 GTI. I had forgotten about it until I drove in my neighbor’s R. Best mod you can do.
I did mine the old school way and unplugged it. I never plugged it back in when trading it.
LOL, I was going to do that, but I like not having any faults stored. You don't get a warning light or anything, but that VCDS red text bugs me
HumbleMechanic I understand. If I had your tools, I’d do it that way too!
Really they've come to this, shoulda kept making the VR6 oh well
Right!?! Problem never would have existed in the first place.
the stickers/labels being placed on car side windows these days is getting out of hand. why, why, why??? That's the biggest one yet I've seen on a car. I wonder how much cheaper the car would cost w/o the soundakator? It is a zero value adder yet it's there adding complication and disrupting the natural/pure essence of the car. Thanks Charles, info appreciated.
Good job Aaron, I mean Charles. LOL, kidding. I actually disconnected mine on my GLI a year ago. Unfortunately I had to cut the cable since I couldn't get my arm under the cowl with enough clearance to disconnect. Still, it sounds better than fake engine noises and vibrations.
That yellow R is stunning
I'm surprised that a German manufacture would even consider that. I lived in Germany for 5 years (and I'm married to one) Germans like things quiet. No mowing on Sundays for example, no commercial trucks are allowed to run on Sundays, and stock exhaust is a must. In fact the city of Karlsruhe will no longer allow any diesel automobiles in the city limits. Other cities will follow, but that's more for emissions. Anyway, great to learn something new. Thanks!
Wait! What about thousands of people who purchased diesels in last few years? Are they going to get screwed by local governments?
@@tomwalma4762 Yes
I hate the fake engine noise. I want to hear what is actually going on in my vehicle.
I thank God the previous owner of my GTI removed the sound actuator altogether!
Little known fact, Mr Bubb Rubb works for VW now to make sure your car has the wooo wooo!
Yeah but that’s only in the mornin. You supposed to be up cooking breakfast or sumpthin
Just thinking back to the time of R32 and R36.. Now there´s an engine.
I have a 2017 Passat GTR with 280hp 2.0 liter engine, and I´d trade it anyday for a R36, even if they stopped making them back in 2010.
Sounds like its just a speaker... someone should modify it and make it sound like an obnoxious kid making car noises
I've always really hated fake engine noise. It's good to know I can get rid of it.
Just recently found out about this channel. Loving the Golf R, keep it up dude
Thanks so much. 💙
Fake engine sound is sad. I love my LS7. The Z06 sounds rumbly and amazing. My wifes STI sounds great too but we had to remove a ton of baffles to extract the pure turbocharged sound.
Thank you for being cool with my choice on my noise maker. I'm so glad your cool with it.
Sounds like that things is definitely sending incognito messages into outer space 😂😂😂
Right!!!!
just turned off yesterday, now is a bit quiet but pure exhaust than the fake burble.
The Soundaktor sounds like R2-D2 during test mode!
Is the soundaktor found on the vw polo gti 6c
Yes, they have it to
@@Dwaynefreeman Lol i own a 6c polo gti but didnt notice yet :d
I enjoy the soundaktor in the summer sometimes just because it sounds good, but in winter it must be deactivated. The rattling in the dash is unbearable at cold temps. It's a very easy thing to adjust in obd 11 so I just turn on the sound in the hot summer for a day, get tired of it and turn it off again.
Do you need the Ultimate for this, or is the Pro OBD11 enough? Cheers
A vag com scan with no malfunctions... I've never seen such a beautiful sight.
N1, mr beard man 😁. My mechanic turned it off today, and the sound is soo much better! Thank you for this!
Btw, with the fake sound turned off, is there a difference between comfort and race sound now?
Thanks in advance.
Wasn't there a movie about this silliness!?
Good tip.
Thanks for show us.
Yes, I would do this. Will there be an all new R out soon though?
I am not sure when the MK8 R will be out.
You can turn it off in the individual mode settings as well. That doesn't turn it off if you put it in Race mode though.
This might be why all us R owners with straight pipes think we still sound good 🙃
I'm sorry guys but this is completely ridiculous. Thank you Humble mechanic for this video
Thanks humble mechanic for the heart 😃
Another great content✊🏽..Have any idea on how to do the same by using OBD11?
That’s why I prefer V8 cars with real sound.
For the future I’m hoping for hot hatches to get better sounding engines than the standard inline 4.
Maybe 270 degree twins, t-plane triples or crossplane inline 4s would do the trick...they all sound bad ass that’s for sure. 👌
I would to be on the meeting were they discuss this was a good idea!
DUDE!!! IF I could do that in an eGolf, I woudl buy an eGolf!
@@HumbleMechanic sounds like the parts cannon needs an upgrade. LOL
