My first car and I think it spoiled me with the fast shifting dsg. I think manuals are kind of overrated tbh, some people think its all or nothing. If you compare to some 4 speed auto alternative that can't build power, sure a manual is better and makes sense. But I think a good auto isn't nearly as bad as some make it out to be. Always having both hands on wheel to be in contact with the road is a plus.
@@darklordsauron3415the only thing a manual has going for it these days is that you may still be able to shift even if slight problems occur whereas an auto might just throw a code and refuse to work at all. Proud MK6 Owner since 2015, with w KO4 , a ECU-TCU Tune , KW COs, APR Cooling system and an enlarged intake with PCV delete and OZ Superleggera its a dream Start for any car enthusiast that has a small budget like mine
I've owned an MK2 and an MK5 at different times, and I loved both cars for what they were in their day. My favorite car from my past, without question, was the Acura Integra GS-R (DC2). That was a special, special vehicle to me, a very attainable, pure "drivers' car" in the truest sense. It got stolen from me after 3 years of ownership, but those years I had it stuck with me. A generational Integra / RSX battle would be fun to see.
I am a Porsche 911 owner and collector and I choose to drive a Mk8 GTI as my daily driver. My last daily was a BMW M2C but in reality, the GTI is a far better daily performance car. It flys under the radar and handles razor sharp. Build quality might even be better in my 2024 GTI S than my 2020 M2C. Absolutely no rattling or creeks even in cold weather. The GTI feels so solid and well put together. I have other full size luxury vehicles from BMW in my collection but the DNA in this little GTI takes me back to my earlier air cooled 911 in it’s a drivers car that is pure German simplicity and oozes its German DNA. It doesn’t have vulgar silly wings in add-ons as other cars in the hot hatch category. It just works. Our last few Audi models from a RS3, S4, RS4, were nice but too heavy and rather expensive with annoying tech and mechanical issues always visiting the dealer. AWD might be faster off the line but heavy and less fun in general. The GTI climate control will freeze you out with its air AC and quickly heat up in winter. Set the GTI climate to auto and forget about it in all 4 seasons. Lastly, the GTi is a pure drivers car so once set up you don’t fiddle with the controls short of drive mode “Sport” or “individual”. That is the beauty of the GTI as it doesn’t need to be constantly adjusted like my BMW or Audis. It does what it does better than anything else in its class.
My brother had a 2 door GT 1979, 2l abf motor, throttles the works, running on PURE AVGAS, PUSHING 135KW no turbo. Made gti mk7 look like it was going in reverse on the ¼mile. RSA BOYS WILL GO MAD FOR IT 🇿🇦

This video brings back such awesome memories from my childhood and this is the car that got me into becoming a petrolhead. My dad had a 1983 Mk1 GTI (Burgundy) with 15" BBS Hockenheims and a Zender front lower bumper. Everytime we drove in that car I begged my dad to race it 😂. He sold it eventually and upgraded to a 1998 VW Caddy Pick-up which had the 1.8 8v engine and it was a surprising little rocket ship. My dad currently owns an '06 Caddy Pickup and 2018 Tiguan Comfortline, I myself had a 2010 Mk1 CitiSport 1.4i which unfortunately got written off almost a year into ownership and since then I got a 2011 Polo vivo so VW runs strong in our family, 38 years and counting, but I'm now in the market to get a MkVI or MkVII manual GTI just for the sheer pleasure of experiencing what I experienced when I was a little 4 year old in the best hot hatch! 🇿🇦✌️
Had a red Mk5 in 2007-2010. Had it APR programmed to 250+hp and 400+NM. 6spd manual, was HUGE fun car and very quick. Also the kids named it Rory. Rory the red racing car. LOL. So cool to see this video.
This MK3 is no 16V, the "16V" badge is missing and they clearly announce 115 hp, which is the power of the 8V. The 16V has 150. I had a 8V and got crushed by a MK1 just like in this video. A 16V would have been in front of the MK1 and MK2 and maybe even of the MK4, due to the lesser weight.
Came here for this. How hard would have been to find a 16v MK3? Or, at least, acknowledge in the fact that there is one. Quite unfair, especially as they're going with the 16v MK2.
@@rickydub6950he’s right, they have the wrong engines matched to the cars, you can see the mk2 headlights when he’s talking about the mk3. Was wondering if anyone else noticed that. Loved my Mk2 16v but the mk1 was awesome for zipping through town.
Wrong interior shots too. Showed the Mk3 interior on the Mk2 and the Mk2 interior on the Mk3. I laughed when Mat said "GTI 16V" then shows an 8V engine!
I love the look of the Mk.4. I think most of the complaints about it are mechanical- and performance-based, not aesthetics. Even though it's not technically a GTI, I think the Mk.4 Golf R32 is one of the best looking Golf variants ever.
Better then the mk1-3 in design imo, people didn't like I guess cause it lacked the sporty handling and feel of the prior ones, which was fixed with the mk5.
Awesome race! Mk5 and Mk6 kept up fairly well to the Mk7.5! Context definitely important, the Mk5 and Mk6 aren’t the “regular” GTI’s, they are the edition 30 and 35 respectively, whereas the Mk7.5 and Mk8.5 are the “regular base” GTI’s. Although, the Mk7.5 is actually a performance pack. So not completely base. The equivalent Mk7 and Mk8 would be GTI Clubsport Edition 40 and 45 respectively.
This is why i think the mk5-8 races weren't entirely on equal footing. He should have used the base mk5 and 6 or used both clubsport versions of the mk7 and 8.
I dont care, for all the so called progress and massive sums of money the 7.5 and 8 cost id still expect it leaving a manual mk5 regardless if it was k04. modern tech and dsg has been embarrassed, the game just aint moved on as much as the marketing makes you think. They just sell you more boring screens now and autos
I had a mk6 GTI for 2 years, too many problems. Timing chain, water pump, spark plugs, gearbox, turbo eventually needed replacing too. Sold it and got a mk6 GTD.
@@nigelboom3943 Spark plugs are consumables. Timing chains have to be done at around 110,000 miles and on any Golf of any generation you always ALWAYS do the waterpump when you do the cam belt or cam chain.
Those little MK5s are one of the best hot hatches ever made. My wife has an old 2006 one with over 153k on the clock and it is still an absolute hoot to drive. Not fair to even try and compare it with my stage 2 RS6 but for pure driving fun that little pocket rocket will always be near the top of my list. Even looks better than all the other Gti models, but though those beautiful Mk1 and 2's do come very close.
I was fortunate enough to own a MKV GTI during my college years. Absolutely loved it. Was reliable and amazing fun to drive, and I still think it looks the best out of all the versions.
@@1dayumay548 One opinion versus 19 other opinions. Together this makes statistics, and a general consensus among the community. So how does it feel to be "wrong" in a sense?
As a 50 years old man, I must admit that Golf I, Golf 2, and Golf 3 brought a happy smile on my face, reminding me of all those "childish" things we were doing. Golf 4... I kind of still like it, but there was no emotion involved. Golf 6 I will always associate with the crappy gear box!
A bit of perspective - Matt says the Mk2 in 1991 cost £13,995 which would be equivalent to about £38,000 comparing with RPI (Retail Price Index). The 'same' price as the new (much better) one! 😳
@@ivordavies1828 there are many ways of measuring the difference in value over time - some make more sense than others! RPI is measuring against the price of goods in the shops and may better reflect the ability to spend than inflation which is more to do with the value of a currency.
You did no favours to the Mark III choosing the 115hp GTI lite version over the 150 which is an absolute rocketship😉 It would have definitely given the Mark IV a ran for it's money being lighter as well
Actually it was the150bhp version. You can see the 16V DOHC head in the video. I used to own one and wouldn't call it a rocket ship. 0-60 in 8.7 sec. Heavy and not exactly a fizzy engine.

Mk4 was a beauty. One of the few rounded design that were actually cool and well proportioned. Also really well built.
It does what it does better than anything else in its class.
yes, my SF90 is also worse than my Mk5 GTI, it`s in a league of its own this VW GTI.
Yeah i prefer my mk 7 GTI over my Bugatti Bolide. Such a great car! 👀

Wow that was very surprising!!! The Mark 1 off the line was incredible. The Mark 2 will forever be the King of GTi’s!!!!!
Mk 1 has such an iconic, pretty design. Giugiaro is a genius.
It is one of the less ugly Guigiaro designs. But I don't understand why he's a celebrated designer. None of his designs are good.

MK5 for me. Classy car without being in a class. Anyone can drive them from a single mum in east London to land owning gentry
I had a mk1 & 2 loved them, but my, MK3 VR6 was something else & in my opinion the best sounding Vdub ever
They may as well scrap this video. If you’re not going to let a VR represent the MK3, then no point.
8:49 love the MK1 just screeching infront of the rest
Had a red Mk5 in 2007-2010. Had it APR programmed to 250+hp and 400+NM. 6spd manual, was HUGE fun car and very quick. Also the kids named it Rory. Rory the red racing car. LOL. So cool to see this video.
I was selling VWs when the MkV came out, absolutely love that car!
My 2008 was named Dash, after the kid from the Incredibles. Great drive.
6:55 amazing engine sound🔥
The MK3 GTI 16 V has got a 150 hp/180 Nm, and the MK4 GTI 150 hp, in Editions 180 hp
That mk 3 is the 8v
The standard MK4 GTi should've gotten 180 hp and the Anniversary mk 4 should've had 225 hp , but VW was caught napping 😅
No , it's 16v , look closer 😉
@@ВладимирСтоименов-в6гthe shots are mismatched. The 16v is from the mk2 and the 8v is from the MK3.
@@ВладимирСтоименов-в6гit’s an 8 valve bud
This MK3 is no 16V, the "16V" badge is missing and they clearly announce 115 hp, which is the power of the 8V. The 16V has 150. I had a 8V and got crushed by a MK1 just like in this video. A 16V would have been in front of the MK1 and MK2 and maybe even of the MK4, due to the lesser weight.
also when they showed the engines, mk3 and mk2 footage were switched
Yep, mk3 16v was 2,0 150. Sorry they didnt had that one. Or the mk1 with 1,8 8v.
This is 16v block. Are you blind?? Huge block!!!

Mk7.5 Performance has 7spd DSG, and likely to have GPF too (if made March 2018 onwards). Remap is vital for it 🤣
The mk7 is not base but Performance
@@aiextm6191
Which I did say. However, at a point towards the end of its production, the Performance did become standard.

@@nigelboom3943 Spark plugs are consumables. Timing chains have to be done at around 110,000 miles and on any Golf of any generation you always ALWAYS do the waterpump when you do the cam belt or cam chain.

Love seeing the Mk5 still holding up against some of the newer models, one of my favourite cars ever
A bit of perspective - Matt says the Mk2 in 1991 cost £13,995 which would be equivalent to about £38,000 comparing with RPI (Retail Price Index). The 'same' price as the new (much better) one! 😳
People seem to forget that inflation exists when comparing prices with previous generations
People forget because the salary has not the same pace of the inflation 😅
According to the Bank of England inflation calculator it would be around £32000 in todays money
@@ivordavies1828 there are many ways of measuring the difference in value over time - some make more sense than others!
RPI is measuring against the price of goods in the shops and may better reflect the ability to spend than inflation which is more to do with the value of a currency.
