I've watched this video like 10 times ahead of installing a downpipe on my a3. First time doing any exhaust work and for sure this helped, done in 4 hours on jackstands. Universal joints and extensions were the absolute hero of this install though.
My man! Just completed my IE downpipe install on my 2016R.. would have been lost without this video! Thank you! And yes people don't be stubborn, remove the prop shaft.. I tried to be stubborn lol
I like the added feature of the timer on the lower left-hand corner of your recording screen. It helps us understand how much time actually does lapse while you do your installations and stuff. Of course it takes most of us two or three times longer than it takes you to do stuff because you’re so good at it!
Even though I don't have a similar car, I always love watching your guide videos. The camera angles you get are really effective, clear, and well illuminated. It must take you ages to get anything done having to setup the camera and lights all the time. Thanks for the quality content Charles!
Wow Charles you’ve changed so much on your R in such a short period of time. Can’t wait to see a video on how it compares to your R32 when your finished
Love the amount of detail you go through when doing this stuff! Thanks Charles love watching even though all my Vdubs are older still always enjoy watching.
I’m gonna be replacing the stock to an IE DP, I just got it in today. And let me tell you. This video is gonna be watched at least another 4 times to make sure I get it right!! Thank you HM!!!
i have wrenched on a few cars and do not have my golf R yet. i really appreciate your very high quality (important tips) DIY videos. Your the gold standard for me.
Hi Charles, thank you for this video. In my humble opinion It is the best one out in UA-cam land. Very clear and precise I watched this multiple times and then install my downpipe today with no issues. Keep doing what you're doing. Cheers 🍻
Dude hands down you’ve made the best MQB down pipe instal video. I appreciate all the torque figures you provide as well. I didn’t wanna struggle with the oem DP I bought a clamp and cut it, and when I heard you mention it I was like great minds think alike, it was so easy getting it out while it’s cut. Subd to your channel. Thanks for the video.
I can't believe VW actually uses v-band clamps from the factory. That's so convenient. Edit: Honestly, that factory pipe with cat looks extremely well-made. Much better than older cars I've worked on.
I love the quality and attention to detail with these videos, although I would never buy a Golf with my own real money, I'm watching these videos in the off chance a Golf gets gifted too me.
I installed a downpipe on my 2019 GLI on jackstands in my garage. My arms have some cuts but it is possible. So many less steps due to FWD. Great video! Love the content!
I understand this is older; however, noticing how fast the DSG shifts were when you were accelerating was the reason you didn't feel any difference with the DP. Had you wound out the gears you would notice the difference. I'm certain you understand that. Sounds great! Really dig your channel...
I had to stack some washers and use a longer bolt where the downpipe bracket bolts to that bracket/red rubber hanger. Mine was so far off. I removed and adjusted just to check but with the pipe on the turbo and bolted to the block it was still way off. It was really the only part of the install that I struggled with. Seemed like the two pins that go into the rubber hanger boots wanted to pop out otherwise.
That is a pain to do in the driveway. Was able to on my GLI and Bug turbo, but on the S3 I couldn't get it high enough and had to cut the pipe to get it out. Next? TTS front calipers? RS3 front control arms? (more solid bushings)? 034 front camber plates and other goodies?
@@HumbleMechanic IE - Integrated Engineering is also a great company. I bought a 2.0 TFSI E888 long block from them last year. Sent them my cores and within 2 weeks my new engine arrived. Pretty stout for my 2010 A4 Avant. Really enjoying your comprehensive build videos. You're a good teacher. 👍
Oh .... if only all cars that you good Mechanics worked on were that clean/easy to get the bolts unfastened. All silly comments aside, THANK YOU for your time and hugh effort making this/these vids. All the best and a Happy New Year.
Damn, that's beefy! I installed the IE turbo back and intake on one of my MK VIs a couple years ago. It's been one of my favorite mods after the Diesel Geek short shifter that is. Installed those in all 3 GTIs, first thing! BTW, the full exhaust isn't terribly loud and drone is not nearly as bad as others I've heard.
Thanks for the video, but i just want to offer advice if anyone's doing this on an Audi S1 (mine's 2015 model), just take the subframe off. Don't need to touch the prop shaft. Don't need to remove the post cat lambda. Still a tight squeeze and I had a 2 post ramp but should be doable on axle stands. Mark up subframe before removal, no tracking needed. Video of a guy doing a clutch on one helped me, search audi s1 clutch reviving salvage. Hope this helps someone, cheers
I'm getting heebeegeebees from seeing all these hard to reach screws and 20 different kinds of hardware. You must have Saintly levels of patience fitting non-OE aftermarket parts in these tight spots. 😳😳
Nice work, great up-close and very clear videography with great lighting. A new standard for how-to video. Makes me want to own a Golf R (with downpipe) just for the DSG pops.
I’ve done this on my mk6 GTD and I had to remove the rocker cover, dog bone mount and fully force the entire engine forward to get enough room to remove the stock down pipe… the tdi cat is so big it’s not possible to remove it from underneath without dropping the entire sub frame which is rather difficult without a proper ramp, also removing the sub frame on my older mk6 left me with squeaky anti roll bar bushes after seeing they were split and replaced them, it was like driving around on a balloon so didn’t want to drop the subframe from fear of causing the same problem again, I’ve since learned from watching your channel I could drop the subframe by undoing the drop links and leaving the anti roll bar attached to the subframe.
I have the exact same car in blue, soundaktor off, same IE stage 1 ECU/TCU tunes, but I deleted the center resonator. It's makes the equivalent difference as turning the soundaktor back on, but it's "real". It's still very quiet in all modes, not to loud but just enough. My mk1 Golf with dual 45 Webers on an AFH 16V Polo motor makes plenty of noise.
Cheers lovely vid ....also great to see you wearing safety eyewear, very much neglected here in the UK through out most industries. Again good good vid thanks.
Awesome video. I liked how you did the step by step removal. Pretty cool! So the next step is software tune? I'd like to see detailed step on when you do the stage 2 software. Like the other commentor said on bigger turbo. That's good idea also. Overall, great video stage 2 series!
If you ever decide to update the description with part numbers I think it would be really helpful for all of those bolts. I have the MK 7.5 R and even with my vin # and me pointing out every bolt, they still managed to give me incorrect bolts for the dog bone. So frustrating.
I noticed my MK7 Golf R doesn't have your plug sensor to the left of the prop shaft when I did mine on your video 6:50. It must be some new sensor to monitor health of the diff or something???
Did the torque specs for the propshaft bolts change for the 2019 MK7.5 Golf R? My manual for MK7 says 60 nM. Only the bolts we don't loosen, the ones going in the other direction, holding the coupling to the propshaft state 50nM + 90deg in the manual.
@8:36 the electrical sensor to the left of the shaft I’m having trouble removing that sensor, any tips ? To remove, my thumb is too big to squeeze in between to remove. Please any help works
It will give you a real kick in the butt with the software, warning though. It's never enough, the guy that services my older ST225 modded his R to about 480hp and he's already talking about doing more. My ST225 has about 330hp but 510nm due to the 5pot and I'm looking at more work myself, I'll keep the S3 how it is. It's a never ending cycle, at first it blows your mind but then you get use to it lol.
Thanks for the video Charles, cracking stuff as always 👍🏻 Can I please ask, does the engine/trans also need to be swung forward in order to completely remove the prop shaft? Or can it just drop down off of the Haldex coupling at the back and then slide backwards off of the bearing at the front?
there was a dyno test by some other guys and they showed that on the audi s3 (sister to the vw golf r) they were able to gain about 25whp with just the downpipe swap from stock. NO remapping yet.
@HumbleMechanic, IE should link your videos in their installation instructions. Their instructions leave out important details! Where do you recommend purchasing the new bolts from? TIA
Just did this about 2 hrs ago. Had the downpipe off in 40 mins. Unfortunately, ECS tuning sent me a GTI downpipe so I had to re-install the oem pipe back on. FML
