I started watching/listening to this podcast as a follower of Sierra. But this has been such an amazing opportunity to get to know her outside of her main channel content. You are all so down to earth, have the the best girl group dynamic, and keep the content SO enjoyable and fun. As someone who has a hard time with “real life” friendships, thank you for creating this.

"like", "um", and all of those are called filled pauses, and they're normal and happen in every language for everyone, and they actually have an important role in speech. The thing is that some are more stigmatized than others (those that are associated with young women especially). There's nothing to apologize about or a need to change how you speak :)
As an Australian who did drama all their life. We did American dialect classes and “upspeak” is one of the things Australians do all the time as part of our natural accent. And it’s something we had to train ourselves not to do for a standard American accent
I associate upspeak with Australians. (Not a criticism). I've not noticed Sierra upspeaking.

The fact that Ryian says "Like" alot when she is talking or explaining something is something that I love and draws me to her personally. It all makes you who you are, the way you speak. Love it.

I finally got to watch this episode! I never comment but this feels so prevalent in my life now lol I just started it and I wanna say I never thought I was a pot stirrer but I went wedding dress shopping for the first time today and I LOVED a black wedding dress 🙈 I’m the oldest in a large Italian very religious family and I’m already starting issues by wanting to get married at our venue instead of a church and now I know I’m about to cause ALL the drama 😂 even my mom the whole appointment was saying how much the black dress is so ME but my grandma will actually have a heart attack 😅 I love this podcast thank you for giving me something to look forward to every week ❤

One of my teachers in highschool used a clicker when we did presentations and clicked it every time some said like or um when speaking. Really makes you more aware of how often you do it.
I’m a speech and hearing major in college and we just got through our dialect unit and what you said was spot on! saying things “grammatically correct” doesn’t equate to intelligence and there is not one correct way of saying something in a language. Harmful stereotypes like that very much stem from putting everything to a label of having an Accent so it was cool to hear you talk about that. Love you guys!

standing in solidarity with sierra and her mobile game addiction. i don't play candy crush (anymore), but i have been playing pocket trains for literally 10 years and have sunk way too many hours and too much money into it. it's definitely not something i'm proud of haha.

This is lowkey so dramatic but I had to come over to UA-cam from Spotify just to leave a comment. I’ve been a huge Sierra fan for years now but I just started listening to this podcast last week and now I’ve binged all the episodes and it has brought me so much healing and joy. It’s brought my head out of a dark place and made me focus my thoughts on friendships, laughter, self love, looking forward to the future, etc. Whether the episodes are goofy like this one or focused on more serious topics I just always leave the episode in a better mood with a more positive outlook and more hope and I’m so thankful I started listening 🧡💗💌🧡💗

Born in Western NY, lived there until 24, moved to NW Ohio - I saw Like all the time! It’s not as unique to SoCal as you think. I think it’s more a generational thing? I’ve noticed that I use it a lot when giving examples, telling stories, or when I’m relating something someone else has said.

As a linguistics student, like and upspeak is a regional thing yes but like should predominantly be a verb not a conjunction, so you could try to swap it with as, hence, as such… and upspeak is only damaging from the point of view that intonation in English has a specific meaning, it can relay not only if it’s a question or not, but also sarcasm, irony, surprise etc. so it shouldn’t be standardised across all speech and potentially lead to the extinction of the distinctions of meaning. Just thought I’d stir the pot 😄❤️
