I got back into reading by game-ifying it. I made a GoodReads account (after a decade of thinking of making one), set a reading goal, added friends who also had reading goals, and then I do e-books and audiobooks because it tells me the percentage of progress I have, which I can then use to update my GoodReads. It's so satisfying marking a book as complete and giving it a rating and seeing your book count go up and get closer to your goal. It's also cool to see what friends on GoodReads are reading.

Love this so much! I have been struggling so hard to get back into a routine that suits my life NOW. I’ve been trying to force myself back into the routine I had pre-pandemic and I have to remember that my life is so different now - it’s been 3 years! I have a different job and a different apartment in a new city. It’s so unrealistic to expect myself to bounce back to the routine I had before

Hot take on reading & The Book Club! 📚
In college, I lost my love for reading. I pressured myself to read "business", "self help", "women in power" etc. non-fiction books, and didn't let myself enjoy reading for the fun of it, and the escapism.
So I picked up a romantic fantasy, and the joy I felt reading was like being transported to being a kid again- I was reading for my own joy, not what I think I "should" read. I now read every night (and I look forward to it!)
For book club - I suggest picking books that bring joy and shed expectations of what you all "should" read, and instead what you want to read :)
P.s. life is short. If you don't like the book, don't finish it. Start a new one & try again 🤗

Best advice I’ve heard is that when trying to add a new habit to our routine that we can only add max 1-2 at a time. It’s really helped me be easier on myself and realize that I can’t change everything all at once and instead need to focus on building 1-2 habits for that month or so it takes to pick them up and then I can worry about what i want to add next.

What helped me get back into my reading era, is every morning when I wake up instead of being on my phone I read a book. Whether it’s a fiction or a self help book, I keep my phone on DND and either commit to reading at least one chapter, or I set a timer for 10 mins. Through that I have really sparked an interest for sitting down and reading again, rather than being on my phone. And I’ve been able to read at least 2 books a month!

Riayn, I obviously can’t diagnose you, but I’m curious if you have seen anything on ADHD. Things are describing are textbook and things I have been noticing in myself lately… but it’s actually helped me so much to realize this because 1. I’m not terrible and crazy and 2. There are so many tips and practices that you can put a system in place that can help! Good luck! ❤

Riayn, I think, for me at least starting a new habit has to be important to me. If its not related back to my life goals and who I am/who I want to be. Goals need to have a why. Why are you doing this and what are you trying to get out of this goal? Also love the habit stacking suggestion. James Clear discusses that in depth in his book Atomic Habits.

Hi! Licensed therapist here. Everything you're talking about is called behavioral activation. There is a relationship between inactivity and depression. The small steps are so important! You're more likely to keep going and build motivation if you even just do one thing.

  • @MP-zz8fd
    @MP-zz8fd Рік тому +7

This might come off as judge-y but I'm definitely NOT meaning it to be: Has Riyan thought about getting tested for ADHD? I only ask because I was recently diagnosed and a lot of the struggles with motivation, the small reward system, and not eating when you're hyper-focused on something are things I did/do.
When you guys talked about how much effort goes into cooking and how you would rather not eat than cook, 100 percent me. The obsession with new projects and then losing interest quickly, very ADHD. I have so many unfinished projects it's embarrassing.
Just mentioning this in case Rian hasn't thought about it, once I was diagnosed it changed my life! If she's already gone down this road then ignore my unsolicited comment!

I have been doing this for years, where every single month I will try something new. Either take something away or add something. It could be something bigger, like waking up at 6am every morning to workout, or cutting out meat, or drinking a gallon of water a day, quitting a bad food habit (eating chips for me). Or smaller like flossing every day, actually getting ready in the morning, stretch every night, quitting nail biting. I then will evaluate and see if it's something I want to continue or adapt or whatever. But yeah, very successful for me, and some habits have really stuck! Some I extended a year, some life, some not at all.

My favourite habit or practice that I picked up is stopping for a second to really listen to myself. Be it about what I'm feeling, or what I want to do or even what I want to eat. Just give my brain the space to express itself, I am always gogogo normally, very social, like to listen to music, podcasts or talk on the phone but I really found a deep calming energy in trying to stop to listen to myself, like o would with my partner or my child. Loved the episode as always ❤️

Game changer for cooking at home: frozen mixed vegetables (I like the stir fry). And preseasoned meat, like chicken drumsticks.
I do the frozen veggies on the stove, and the meat either also on the stove or in a pan in the oven.
Also yes to rice cooker. Set it and forget it.
I like to think I can meal prep, but often don't have the time for that

Starting a new habit, I am going to workout when he's at preschool.

Can we also discuss another harmful part of the pandemic that we might still be facing today: codependency?? The two top pieces of advice I'd recommend for building any habit are:
    - make it fit with your life as it is now. If you try and change too much for a new habit it's so much energy and you probably won't do it. If you want to read more, for example, find a time when you have a lot of waiting around on a regular basis - if you catch public transport, for example, or if you drive a long way each day you can listen to an audio book, or if you take baths all the time then take a book in the bath.
    - Never think of a new habit as taking something away. A super stereotypical example is when people diet they think "I'm going to stop eating junk food" but actually if you want to eat healthier you should think "I'm going to add more fruit and vegetables" or something. Fruit and vegetables are great and taste good, and you can still eat whatever makes you feel good without putting your brain into a restriction mindset.
Also ETA: You should make sure new habits are ultimately achieving something you want to achieve. If you don't actually care about your to do list looking aesthetic, then maybe bullet journaling isn't for you, but if what you actually want is to be more organised, then find a different way to do that - I use a to do list app, for example!

It's always crazy to me when I hear of people romanticizing the early pandemic, because i'm in a long term LDR (USA to Australia) and when the pandemic hit, my partner was 5 days away from being back with me, and suddenly it was all cancelled and I had no clue when we'd be together again (wound up being 14 months apart, and then another 10 months after that 😢) so knowing people had a fun time at first when everything locked down is such a wild concept to me. I went into such a deep depression, and now that things are better and my partner and I get to see each other every few months again, I have a lot of trauma from it all, and each time we're apart again I panic really badly. It was one of the worst times of my life easily, and that's saying a lot because I've gone through stuff like chemo in the past! I feel like I need a lot of therapy post-Covid but I can't afford it :(

How to become a reading girlie!! - join an online book club (I’m part of the Booksta Bookclub and it’s SO fun. One book a month). - read books about things you’re already obsessed with: - for example, I was a BIG iCarly fan growing up, and then I read Jeannette McCurdy’s incredible new memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died. One more idea - find a time in your day that you’re waiting for something, and read during that time. For example, I take 35 minutes of public transport a day, and I always read during that time. Best of luck gals ❤️
