  • In his effort to expose deception in the Small Council, Tyrion orchestrates a deception of his own.
The editing in this scene is brilliant as it skips through the three conversations.

Forgiveness is the thing that makes it all click. To be forgiven we must forgive. The key is our parents. He gives him the most preposterous story because deep down, he knows he can trust Varys. Even Cersei might laugh, but this also gives Varys the most room to spin spin spin. It's like a blank check.
He gives Pycelle the juiciest lie because he kinda knows he'll rat, but wants this message above all to go to cersei (practice round).
He gives littlefinger the most hair-brained scheme but baits the carrot, to see how much he'll jump... and boy does he.
Not just finding the rat, but measuring everyone's character and capability. Tyrion already suspects Littlefingers can work miracles but now he *knows* he can, and that he has an incredible in at a certain region. Varys will spin, he might make a miracle out of nothing. Tyrion's game of "who can I trust" was a clever thing. Until he revealed to all 3 (Pycelle, Varys, LF) that he was testing their loyalty all along. "The queen mustn't know!" The only way to play would have been to never let them know they were getting played. He already knew he could not trust Littlefinger, he needed no game to realize that. But Pycelle was a wild card. So once he knew Pycelle was telling the queen everything, the only thing to do was never reveal that. And keep feeding Pycelle false information while letting him believe he was trusted completely. Instead Tyrion creates a powerful enemy that comes back to bite him (at the trial for Joffrey's murder).

Looking at the scene (and the comments by others) I feel this scene is kind of funny when we consider that Pycelle gets "found out" when its clear the deck is stacked against him. Littlefinger and Varys might have ratted out to Cercei if they had an incentive, but rightly Varys saw the proposal of Theon as preposterous, while littlefinger was incentivised (taking the proposal at face value) to see it through rather than report it. Pycelle is the only one with an incentive to rat. I know the point ofthe scene is to show that pycelle is the rat telling the queen stuff, but in practice its less a test for tyrion about who is the rat (he probably already suspected pycelle). Rather it s also a test of the intelligence and motivation of lttlefinger and Varys. I hadn't thought of it that way previously

However when littlefinger ends the conversation he states that 'The QUEEN musn't know.' This implies 1 of 2 things. And the whole part with Varys made no sense - wedding Myrcella to Theon was an obviously asinine idea, and again, no reason at all to tell Varys that. It’s interesting to note which story Tyrion gives which person.
The story he gives Varys is the most unbelievable, since Tyrion doesn’t really want him to be the spy.
The story he gives Pycelle is the most believable (and in the end true) because it possible that Cersei might have fallen for the doddering old man act, so the story would have to be convincing or she might ignore him.
The story he gives Littlrfinger could be true or not, so Tyrion has to throw in the promise of Lordship of the Riverlands to sweeten the deal, since he really wants Littlefinger to be the spy.

    • @johncampbell631

I disagree about the Varys point. The fact that Varys is a spy is common knowledge. He's the Master of Whispers for goodness sake, nicknamed 'The Spider' because of the web of informants he remains at the center of. To say "Varys was the spy all along!" and act like it's a revelation is absurd.
My point is this; the only thing better than a truthful person is an honest scoundrel. It puts people at a paradoxical ease because they understand the rules of the game when speaking to such a person.
I'd sooner sit down for a beer with Varys than the High Sparrow - someone who's so devoted to the idea of goodness and religion that he's one of the most insidiously evil characters in Game of Thrones. Pure evil is cartoonish. Pure good is unsettling.

If Tyrion had made it a command of the Hand instead that would have made it more likely he run to Cersei.

+xxlCortez Tyrion is the smarter one. *SPOILERS*
Lord Baelish definitely knows how to play the game but what he lacks are trustworthy allies. For him every person - except Catelyn and maybe Sansa - is just a pawn on the board. He has no empathy. "He would burn the realm down if he could be king of the ashes" to put it in Varys' words.
You also see that in the way he treats his spies. Just consider Ros' fate. He set up the whole war: He let Lysa kill her husband. He told Catelyn that it was Tyrions dagger which led to her arresting Tyrion which led to Tywin _going to war with the Starks_! He added fuel to the flames of the rivalry of Starks and Lannisters because "chaos is a ladder", i.e. purely for his own benefit.
This lack of empathy lead to a lack of truly trustworthy allies. I expect this to be his downfall eventually. While technically he is Lord Protector of the Vale, Lord of Harrenhal and Lord Paramount of the Trident he has no actual power on any of these regions.
To me, Tyrion seems to be the more intelligent person for this reason, basically.

He is an excellent actor as Tyrion, but his English accent is crap.

I love how telling is their reaction to Mycella's news
Pycell, in his role as a mere spy, as Cercei's pawn, just listens and nods
Varys actually questions how is this a good idea, he brings political alliances and conflict of interests, he knows and cares about the realm on a macro level
And Little finger only speaks of grudges and what is for him to gain, he only agrees when a big enough price is dangled in front of his face, he only cares for himself

The Bible is truth. Please read at least Genesis Mathew and one book you chose yourself. The important part is combining the reading with the inner work Jesus Christ taught. Forgiveness is the thing that makes it all click. To be forgiven we must forgive. The key is our parents. They’ve loved us to some degree, feeding raising clothing, etc. we all build up grievances there. Actually dealing with those issues, and genuinely forgiving from within is what makes it all click. Seriously,

Notice at the end how Littlefinger says "The Queen mustn't know" like he knew it was coming, despite the line never being said to him in the first place? He only said this to Varys and Pycelle. Anyone else think this means he had spied on the first two meetings and knew all along what Tyrion was planning?

+Top Hattington On to something! But why would he still try knowing it was a trap? Maybe it was obvious that "the Queen mustn't know"?

GeoGuy NZ Littlefinger makes a living off of doing the unpredictable. If he knew the truth and chose to be honest about that, what would he actually gain from it? It could simply be him playing with Tyrion, letting him think he is in control whilst dropping subtle hints as to otherwise to keep everyone second guessing, Whilst it is obvious that the queen mustn't know, quoting him so directly and almost mimicking the way he said it just seems suspicious to me.
By going along with this plan, he proved he wasn't an informant for Cersie and gained the Hand's trust, which is a big deal, and got to visit Renly's camp.. Doing this let him further his own position, gaining favor with Renly and the Tyrells and securing his position in case of Renly's victory. His relationship with the Tyrells benefitted him very much in the future. Needless to say, just going along with this plan got him very far indeed.

***** The start of the conversation with each starts with Tyrion telling them it's a secret, and Littlefinger's response shows that nothing else on the topic has been discussed yet. If we only saw part of the conversation, what details could have been discussed before this point?

+Top Hattington If you have followed Game of Thrones you would know that later on when Littlefinger found out about Tyrions game he became angry and stormed into Tyrions office telling Tyrion to leave him out of his games.
The fact that they dont show the line in this scene is purely filming technique, it would be stupid to hear the exact same conversation 3 times.

Amra Ljeskovica Couple of points. Firstly if YOU have followed Game of Thrones you should know that the politics is far more about what people SAY, especially for Littlefinger. I mean, this is a character that survives off of being manipulative and calculating. Do you honestly think that ANY response he gives is his real one? We've been shown many times how he shouldn't be trusted, and just because he acts surprised/angry doesn't mean he is that way. You should really already know this.
Secondly, we DO hear the conversation three times. Tyrion starts by telling them how secret the discussion is, then tells them a slightly different version of the story, and then reminds them of it's secrecy. Littlefinger's very first line, "tell no one what?" shows that, up to this point, no details on the topic have been discussed, otherwise why else would he say that?
Thirdly if there HAD been further conversation before this point, what could it have been that was on topic? Seems to me we heard it all, starting from when Littlefinger came on screen, with his first line indicating it was the start of the exchange. By all means tell me what you think could have been said before that line.
