Love of girl-balls aside, no way. No way did he know he had Arya Stark in his castle and allow her to hear his plans, and fail to use her as a hostage. When his army movements were "accidentally" sent to the wrong lord, one loyal to the Starks, and he has Arya Stark handling letters and sitting in on strategy meetings, he would probably figure out what happened. He knew she was a northern girl, and suspected she was high born. He did not know exactly who she was.

Right. And in the process she turned the Tyrells, probably the most powerful house in Westeros, against her, probably caused the commonfolk of King's Landing to hate her even more than they already did, caused her last remaining son to kill himself, and now sits on the Iron Throne literally without one single ally. +italkcrab "wanting to ensnare the whole Kingdom using his blind followers and whip me through the streets and lock me up in a dungeon for having premarital sex instead of minding his own goddamn business” Except as the queen in a society that runs on blood based inheritance of authority and power who she has sex with is EVERYONE’S business. For that matter who the King has sex with is everyone’s business.
How many people had to die so Cersei could sleep with Jamie and bear his children? One hundred thousand? Two hundred thousand? Half a million? A million? And thats not including people that lost loved ones, property, or their innocence.
Is this system a good one? Not really. But it’s the system that they live in and they have to live by it’s rules. And with these rules come privileges and responsibility. I don’t think you’re going to get much sympathy from me for Cersei, who probably lives in more luxury than 99.999% of the planet at that time, when all she had to do was keep her skirt down, or at the very least take steps to ensure she wouldn’t get pregnant.

Except what Tyrion wanted wasn't applause. He wanted *recognition and a genuine place at his father's side.* Tyrion is the main reason the capital didn't fall to Stannis. He ensured it held out under siege, crippled the enemy forces with the Wyldfire attack, and then led a sally that held the enemy army at bay, preventing them from entering the city and killing Joffrey ahead of Tywin's relief force. All while keeping the worst excesses of his psychotic nephew in check. Tyrion did exactly what Tywin sent him to do. It is Tywin who fails to recognise this because he's too blinded by his hatred of his own son.

Tyrion should've not brought his whore into kings landing considering it will be noticed by tywin later on, and it's also Tyrion's reputation of whoring and drinking is what clearly destroys tywin's main goal.
If Tyrion tried to have a legit wedding with anyone before this, tywin would've considered it.
Sometimes reputation is still a deciding factor no matter what you did.
Hence, even tywin denied not because Tyrion's not capable of ruling casterly rock, it's because he would've turned it into a whore house therefore diminishing the Lannisters reputation from an outside view.

It's interesting how Tywin seems frustrated because all the traits he wants in his kids are instead spread out nearly equally among the three of them:
Jaime - Skilled in combat and strategy, and is charismatic.
Cersei - Utterly ruthless and puts family first (or her kids at least, in her own way)
Tyrion - Brillant and inventive, clever when it comes to politics and scheming
All of these traits are embodied in Tywin himself but he can't seem to get them all into just one of his kids, mostly because he himself failed in the parenting arena, something he can't seem to comprehend.

Tywin's strong traits are outshined by his bad ones. Jaime is a skilled, charismatic fighter and Tywin practically chased him off by never respecting his wishes to be a man of his own making. Cersei puts family first, but Tywin disregards that mainly because he believes she is not that smart (which I suppose holds merit). Tyrion is a brilliant strategist and politician, but Tywin can't unsee the monster that killed his beloved wife. All in all if Tywin had been more understanding towards his children and showed some leniency (even a little), the Lannisters could have been an unstoppable dynasty for years to come. Ironically, the way Tywin handled his kids results (or may results) in the very downfall of the family name he swore he'd protect after seeing his own father nearly destroy it. I agree with Samuel Godwin , his linear thinking is his own downfall.

He was a great Lord of Casterly Rock, a great Warden of the West, a great Hand of the King, a great battle commander, but a horrible father. The tragedy is that the last role was probably his most important, and his failure in that regard will probably bring about the downfall of his House.

However he sacrificed any pretense of love for any of his children, choosing instead to love himself and his position. For the twins it didn't matter since they were both narcissistic selfish people but for Tyrion he did not get the love and support a child needed, turning him into the bitter man he is.

He says a similar thing to Jaime in A Storm of Swords / season 4 of the show, when Jaime refuses his position as heir to Casterly Rock for the umpteenth time. Here's an excerpt from one of Jaime's later chapters in ASOS:
" 'I am a knight of the Kingsguard. The Lord Commander of the Kingsguard! And that’s all I mean to be!'
Firelight gleamed golden in the stiff whiskers that framed Lord Tywin’s face. A vein pulsed in his neck, but he did not speak. And did not speak. And did not speak.
The strained silence went on until it was more than Jaime could endure. 'Father...' he began.
'You are not my son.' Lord Tywin turned his face away. 'You say you are the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, and only that. Very well, ser. Go do your duty.' "
At the same time, this reinforces his line when he disowns Jaime.

Cersei would have left an ideal legacy had Joffrey been a competent ruler. She is what expected from a Westerosi woman from a Great House - beautiful, wealthy and by marrying the King she became the most powerful woman in Westeros. Overtime she assimilated Tywin’s influence, but was not sharp or calculated enough to maintain it. Overall Cersei was a powerful force, but she was very flawed and arrogant and extremely self-serving and destructive.

Well, he had twisted reasons to hate Tyrion, it's contextualized willing or not. And if the fan theories are correct, Tyrion could be a bastard, the son of the mad king, etc.. if that's the case, hell, can you really blame Tywin from being so resentful? Tywin had to be a zen master, some kind of a saint to just absorb this kind of drama and move on, lol sometimes people expect these fictional characters to act like caricatures, that's why I enjoy dark fantasy, because it exposes the cynical side of things, humanity are not purely "evil" or "good", these concepts comes from fairy tales (including religion and whatnot)

Tywin may have been been a poor father. But he was a great leader. A strong man. Someone that everyone who met him wanted him to approve of them. It’s very easy to like Tywin. Not a damn thing in this 15 minutes they showed, was wrong that he said. Harsh, but blunt tactful and honest about his beliefs. He was right with Jamie, pointing out his insecurities while also saying he would’ve done x y z. (Which, although again is blunt now with other houses, it still comes with a significant understanding of why, given the situation)
He was right with cersei, really not much else to say. Calls her a shit mom for not mentoring him into the right direction and commanding respect from her son. Both are accurate
And even with Tyrion, even if Tyrion wanted recognition or reward for his actions, Tywin doesn’t agree with that and he gave genuine reasons as to why.
Even though Tyrion developed, Tywin doesn’t see it yet; and tyrions rep of being a drunk with Whores genuinely already preceded him.
Only real argument to dislike Tywin is that he was obviously more of an ass to Tyrion because his birth killed his mom and he’s a dwarf. Outside of that, it’s kinda hard to disagree with a vast majority of his actions and words.
Forgot how great he was, just watched a few scene packs. Never rewatched GOT since 6/7/8 were kinda let downs, forgot how great the show was originally

Tywin hates Tyrion but when Jaime is captured he calls Tyrion his son because the Lannister's power, position and legacy is more important than his hatred for Tyrion
not only he tries to use Tyrion's intelligence since he knows Joffrey and Cersei are stupid but he calls him his son and treats him with respect knowing that this will give Tyrion the motivation to do his best as Hand of the King.

In our society, a man like Tywin would be ignored. I've learned that first-hand. You cannot acquire "power" over others by being a hard-ass that bullies people around, in our world (unless you've already acquired some power and exercise it like a drill sergeant would). You've got to be more like Renly, I find, charming them and being "positive" and all that shit.

And brilliant acting with the Lannisters, they're the most interesting characters in the show (and in the books) in my opinion - so complex and all of them are pretty smart (yes, Cersei too).
I think it's Tywin's fault, neglecting them at Casterly Rock during their childhood and all, that resulted in Jaime and Cersei's unhealthy relationship ... they possibly lacked the love they were supposed to get from their parents (mommy is dead) so they tried to get it from each other. And of course, Tywin's hate with Tyrion is stupid.

They're my favorite House. Then I'd say Martell, then Bolton, Greyjoy and then Baratheon. But anyway! House Lannister FTW!!

One of the few scenes where one sees Tywin working like a base-level worker. He's cleaning & butchering his kill for food, a basic survival skill, even though he's a wealthy lord.

That analogy he gave Jaime about their family "collapsing into nothing" 😂😂

Tywin is a walking contradiction. Man who treats his family pragmatically as pawns based on how he can use them to help the family name... yet he choses to alienate the only person who matters in the long run and who's political skills and wits could match his own - all that because of an irrational and selfish hate.
You had all the opportunities in the world to harmlessly slip from your inhuman discipline and you picked the wrong one. Well done.

stalk8r This. If Tywin had actually observed Tyrion and seen how incredibly smart he was instead of shunting him to the side--Tyrion would have been his greatest legacy. But because Jaime and Cersei were prettier--he went with them.

Tywin's sister once told him Tyrion is his mini version. Tywin did not speak to her for a long time because of that.
Had he been not blinded by his hate of Tyrion...

Tywin has something to admire and something to dislike about each one of his children.
Cersei bore grandchildren to continue the family line, however, she has very little political sense and charismatic tact.
Jaime is an amazing warrior, but makes brash decisions (something which annoys Tywin greatly).
Tyrion is a great politician, but is a lustful dwarf. Tywin also blames him for his wife's death.

I love the early seasons so much. We keep seeing that little hint of hope that Tywin really did love his son, only for the later reveal that he never did.
When he says "you're my son", he's essentially saying "I'm in charge"

@5:44 Imo Tywin was always conflicted with his feelings towards Tyrion. He hated him for being the reason why his wife died and he despised Tyrion because he was a dwarf. And yet he knew he could count on Tyrion and Tyrion was more like him than he would ever admit.

That scene in the tent with Tywin carving the animal is definitely the best introduction to a character in the show, and might be the best scene in the whole show.
