"She loved you." "She told you?" "No. She talked about nothing but killing you. That's how I know." You know it's true friendship when you threaten to kill the other person.
I think it might also be more symbolic of how Varys' power and influence (ie. How he plays the game) is more subtle than that of Tyrion's, though just as strong.

Yes, that was a great touch. Nice contrast between Tyrion's firm, aggressive, five-fingered blockade and Varys' delicate, reserved suggestion that the conversation isn't over.
Tyrion thought he was threatening him. Varys wasnt up to that point. He then threatened Tyrion after the big fish little fish line. He could've said "THAT was a threat, see the difference?"

When he said, I was taken by a sudden urge to meet your young lady, what he meant was, _You tried to hide her, but I knew where she was, and who she was, and here I am._ He wondered who had betrayed him. The innkeeper, that boy in the stable, a guard on the gate . . . or one of his own? “I always like to return to the city through the Gate of the Gods,” Varys told Shae as he filled the wine cups. “The carvings on the gatehouse are exquisite, they make me weep each time I see them. The eyes . . . so expressive, don’t you think? They almost seem to follow you as you ride beneath the portcullis.” “I never noticed, m’lord,” Shae replied. “I’ll look again on the morrow, if it please you.” _Don’t bother, sweetling, Tyrion thought, swirling the wine in the cup. He cares not a whit about carvings. The eyes he boasts of are his own. What he means is that he was watching, that he knew we were here the moment we passed through the gates._ “Do be careful, child,” Varys urged. “King’s Landing is not wholly safe these days. I know these streets well, and yet I almost feared to come today, alone and unarmed as I was. Lawless men are everywhere in this dark time, oh, yes. Men with cold steel and colder hearts.” _Where I can come alone and unarmed, others can come with swords in their fists, he was saying._ Shae only laughed. “If they try and bother me, they’ll be one ear short when Chella runs them off.” Varys hooted as if that was the funniest thing he had ever heard, but there was no laughter in his eyes when he turned them on Tyrion. “Your young lady has an amiable way to her. I love how mysterious Varys was in the early show.... never knowing if he was good or bad, or what his true intentions are. He was so subtle and smart, and left you wondering and thinking. Also, the dialogue and acting in this scene is top top notch! It was a mistake to make him overtly "good" and overly-explicit in his intentions.
I love the recognition on Varys’ face when Shea says she can always tell you does and doesn’t like fish pie. It perfectly displays his recognition that she understood what was going on and wasn’t just talking about food, and he immediately follows by moving the weight of the conversation from her to Tyrion directly. Add on his subtle line about the city being brighter by her presence acknowledging it aloud, and it makes me miss the old Varys.
Easily one of the best moments between these two characters. They're feeling each other out. Varys is trying to gather some measure of leverage against Tyrion and Tyrion responds with his own threat. The fact the Varys double-downs on his own position is one of the reasons I love his character. If we are to judge the characters based off their intents and achievements, Varys would be a hero. He works for the betterment of the common folk. He may betray major character after major character, but this is often a reflection of said character's leadership. Varys ultimately wants what is best for everyone and he is not afraid to orchestrate the deaths of the elite to achieve his goals.
I'm pretty sure he is one of the only characters in the entire series (other than, perhaps, the Starks) that gives a shit about anything other than themselves and their progeny
I always thought the whole “big fish little fish” was an odd choice of quote and didnt quite fit with his usual word selection in conversation. I just realized it was a jab at tyrions fisherman comment on top of being clever with the thrown in the sea comment. God the dialogue was so good back then i still find gems
Yeah, Varys was sarcastically mocking him a couple times before Tyrion confronted him. Same with Tyrion taunting him back by accepting the taunts and mentioning how he should try her "fish pie", because he's a eunuch and can't actually function sexually/doesn't want sex, just mocking him for it. That's why I don't buy it at all with the "who threatened you" line lol, you don't just show up, mock someone, casually mention that oh well that you're openly disobeying your father, the most powerful man in the world, don't worry though, I won't tell bro. That's definitely a fucking threat lmfao. I think it's because Varys obviously being the spymaster he is needs dirt on people and needs them to know so he can blackmail them. Also, keeping up his "innocent" persona lmao. I also think Varys did it because he was afraid of Tyrion trying to undermine him as well because of his removal of two small council members, Janos Slynt, and Grand Maester Pycelle. So...Varys took the initiative. It's a good thing they became trusted friends.
This chapter in the books was great. It's from Tyrion's point of view, and everything Varys says is instantly translated in Tyrion's head as something much more sinister.
These two had such great dialogue together. The way they have their own conversation with its own meaning while engaged in conversation with whats her face is better than a CGI heavy battle scene any day. I didn't even realise the subtext of the fish pie bit first time round.
How I know I'm an adult Me 5 yrs ago: "Ok, I guess Shae can tell what things men like to eat & Varys doesn't like fish pie." Me just now: "OMG. They weren't talking about fish pie at all!"

"Friends are such an important part of life. Unfortunate that your farther didn't want her to come, but rest easy my lord; I am very good at keeping secrets *for my good friends*"
The subtle implication by Varys is that he is not one of the fish but is the Fisherman. He responds to Tyrions threat with a Truism that if the fish eat each other to gain power and strength, then pulling the fishermen in with them will only lead to the fisherman catching/eating all the fish. Destruction upon him would be the destruction of all since he would have no reason to hide all that he knows from anyone.
No. I dont think he's warning Tyrion. It's what Shae told Varys. Go through it again. Shae says, "And I tell him how we meet". THEN Varys says all about the kitchen etc. Meaning that she told Varys that they met in his father's kitchen. It's nothing. No warning. Just the storytold by Shae to Varys about how she and Tyrion met.
@@albussd He may be warning Tyrion that this story won't be believed if Tyrion tries to pass Shae off as anything but a w hore, or he may be telling Tyrion that claims Shae makes about herself -- including to Tyrion -- are not to be trusted.
One of the best scenes in the entire series and a great insight on how medieval/court style politics are played. Notice how when Tyrion puts his entire hand on the door as he also threatens violence against Varys for his subtle blackmail threats, and then the master at court politics Varys does the same, but uses just a single finger on the door. Which is a sign that Varys is showing that he is the top player in the political game in Kings Landing, essentially saying it is effortless for him. Tyrion needed to use an entire hand to bar the door while Varys needed just a single finger.
Varys season 2: "The big fish eat the little fish and I keep on paddling" Varys season 8: "Okay Imma go ahead and announce my plans for treason to everyone in a 5 mile radius"
You literally have to be. That's the lesson of the show, of Machiavelli/Han Fei/realpolitik. Or at least you have to be more ruthless than the opponent if it means a higher chance of success.
They're both absolutely ruthless; which is why they work so well together later. They are sparring here, trying to determine what is negotiable and what will provoke an all-out (even suicidal) response from the other.
1:58 "This city is maid brighter by your presence... Is that your usual line, Lord Varys ?" Never remembered that he said that to Shae before telling Olenna one season later aha
"The city is mafe brighten by your presence" . Lord Varys sticks this line to every person he meets.🤣🤣 I suddenly recalled what Lady Ollena replied to Lord Varys on this. 🤣🤣 "Do you greet every person you meet with this particular line?"
This series was SO good in the first few seasons. The end was like watching a slow train wreck - even given the writers were handed the unenviable task of wrapping everything up in the final season.
Varys was like a predator testing the boundaries of Tyrion. Was he prey? Or did he put up a fight. He realized Tyrion knows how to play and wasn't gonna tolerate this stuff, so they became friends.

@@joshuaevans4301 I'd add Margaery to that list. At least she made a good show of caring for the people
1:33 That IS his usual line.
I love how much subtle derision varys can put in the words “auxiliary forces”
You know, this show somewhat helped me going from teenager to adult, stopping being naive and see things as they are and how they work
Fish pie lmao
It exists.(tasty as well)
TeddyPicker191 evem for old england that sounds nasty.
TeddyPicker191 great sex joke
I love how she says she can always tell when someone doesn't like it
John snow's delight
I always thought the whole “big fish little fish” was an odd choice of quote and didnt quite fit with his usual word selection in conversation. I just realized it was a jab at tyrions fisherman comment on top of being clever with the thrown in the sea comment. God the dialogue was so good back then i still find gems
Never realized this! This makes the scene x100 times better, thank you for pointing it out!
Apparently it's not varys who's still going to be paddling. That would be Gendry.
Lol
sera gout He's been paddling for 4 years now
don’t fall out
Yooo Rhaegar, how've you been? 😅
@@FlowerTrollSan not heard of since Robert Baratheon bitch slapped him battle of trident
I liked how Tyrion whistled as he strolled through the Red Keep like he owned the place. He is a smooth operator.
In your victory against the Stark 'auxiliary' forces. Lol Varys hidden slight there.
+luke morgan sorry what does this mean?
John Doe thank you
He said it cuz only 2000 men fought for the starks against like 30000 lannister forces. I think
Shay
How I know I'm an adult
Me 5 yrs ago: "Ok, I guess Shae can tell what things men like to eat & Varys doesn't like fish pie."
Me just now: "OMG. They weren't talking about fish pie at all!"
sunshine2755
yea i was like:
Damm i guess thats a thing, people guessing what exactly you like to eat or not..
She must be Psychic!!!
*suprised pikachu face*
You were probably too young for this show.
Did yall watch this when you were 12?
@@M3Lucky I mean the show started when I was 14. So alot of stuff went over my head.
I still can't understand it can anyone explain me
"Friends are such an important part of life. Unfortunate that your farther didn't want her to come, but rest easy my lord; I am very good at keeping secrets *for my good friends*"
0:36 Varys was onto her immediately. I didn't notice this before. He is such a wise individual.
Ha he's whistling the rains of castamere, excellent touch.
I like how Varys reminds Tyrion that while Kings and Hands have come and gone, he's still here because he's learned to play the game.
Varys wasn't actually threatening Tyrion here. He was warning him.
-EEEK!!! A SPIDER!!!!
-Relax. It just wants to be your friend
Lemwelle Rosales Genius.
Every single sentence from both Varys and Tyrion in this scene is relevant and well thought out. Can't even believe how badly the writing changed.
I love how every time Ned Starks name is mentioned it always follows with the word Honour.
A rare trait in these circles
The subtle implication by Varys is that he is not one of the fish but is the Fisherman. He responds to Tyrions threat with a Truism that if the fish eat each other to gain power and strength, then pulling the fishermen in with them will only lead to the fisherman catching/eating all the fish. Destruction upon him would be the destruction of all since he would have no reason to hide all that he knows from anyone.
The greatest thing about this scene is that he is whistling “The Rains of Castemere “ .
Season 2: "Lord Varys and I can't let our disadvantages get the best of us."
Season 8: "YoU hAvE nO cOcK"
The dialogue in this scene is so smooth i almost slipped
Scene was better than the whole 8th Season lol.
Nothing hit me most than the way the hold the door before they all talked. That shows the passion of theie statement
Gods Tyrion and Varys were both smart then.
I don't know why but when Varys says "and I keep on paddling" it me crack up every time!
It's hilarious!
Maybe you subconsciously thought of Gendry.
I love how quickly they go from threatening each other to being best friends.
0:36 , seems almost like hes warning him about her
Probably he did, but Tyrion did not get it
+Marat De Mars
I think he got it.
He did and Tyrion kept thinking with his dick. That's why she was in a position to turn on him in season 5.
Tyrion had such a sense of entitlement those first seasons. He was much more humble and beat down by season 8.
Tyrion 6 seasons later:
"Lol Varys has no pp"
One of the best scenes in the entire series and a great insight on how medieval/court style politics are played. Notice how when Tyrion puts his entire hand on the door as he also threatens violence against Varys for his subtle blackmail threats, and then the master at court politics Varys does the same, but uses just a single finger on the door. Which is a sign that Varys is showing that he is the top player in the political game in Kings Landing, essentially saying it is effortless for him. Tyrion needed to use an entire hand to bar the door while Varys needed just a single finger.
lmao the "who threatened you?" was hilarious
"To find so a lovely a creature, working on your father's kitchen. It almost begs belief."
It does.
Varys is totally like his book counterpart.
Threats of drowning and the upmost subtle “fuck your threats”
The beginning of a great friendship
I like how Tyrion whistles "Rains of Castamere" at the beginning... 😁😜😀
"Goodbye now, old friend."
Oh sh.. That hit hard right in the feels!
This show was so freaking epic. A work of art.
that's an understatement
Can we talk about how Tyrion sees whats up right when he walks in and sets up that sea motif? The dialogue was immaculate those first few seasons.
It’s funny, cause Varys was actually warning him that Shae was going to backstab him eventually
how?
Varys season 2:
"The big fish eat the little fish and I keep on paddling"
Varys season 8:
"Okay Imma go ahead and announce my plans for treason to everyone in a 5 mile radius"
I've never seen such an effeminate man be so chillingly intimidating.
He is what he needs to be at any given moment, until after season 4, of course.
Truly on of the best characters in my opinion.
Oh how I love Varys! Even though he was dead serious he was very much so proving hes trustworthy!
One of Varys most underrated quotes
Lol never paid any attention in the past to the fish pie line and now im rolling in laughter
God damn Varys. Sure, from what we've seen he might actually be working for the good of Westeros, but holy shit his methods are ruthless
Is that your usual line, Lord Varys ?"
Never remembered that he said that to Shae before telling Olenna one season later aha
Tyrion didn't understand at the time that varys was actually genuine, and actually the only genuine one in the whole city
Me : I don't think anyone can beat these two together.
Bad Writing : hold my D&D
Tyrion Knew How The Game Was Played *
Tyrion at 2:02: 'Shit I forgot. In King's Landing you don't threaten Varys, Varys threatens you.'
Yep. Tyrion may be a Lannister. And very intelligent. But he's fishing in Verys' pond now.
Varys pulls out the “Nah, fuck you” card on Tyrion
ACOK Tyrion is the best Tyrion.
Shae knows what's going on. Look at her microexpressions. She pretends to be charmed by Varys but watch her eyed as she stands up.
The thinly veiled references to Varys's lack of female pursuits in the fish pie jokes are gold.
"The city is mafe brighten by your presence" . Lord Varys sticks this line to every person he meets.🤣🤣
I suddenly recalled what Lady Ollena replied to Lord Varys on this. 🤣🤣 "Do you greet every person you meet with this particular line?"
0:01 The Rains of Castamare from the Red Wedding 🔥
Varys excessive and kind of ironic politeness crack me up. ^^
This series was SO good in the first few seasons. The end was like watching a slow train wreck - even given the writers were handed the unenviable task of wrapping everything up in the final season.
Varys is just happy to have someone who knows how to play the game and isn't an evil twat.
Varys certainly doesn't eat fish pie
You cannot fast travel when enemies are nearby.
Varys was like a predator testing the boundaries of Tyrion. Was he prey? Or did he put up a fight. He realized Tyrion knows how to play and wasn't gonna tolerate this stuff, so they became friends.
In a way Varys wasn't being an enemy to Tyrion at all. He just hates the fact that Varys discovered her and Tyrion knows she is his biggest weakness.
Tyrion was walking around whistling and had such confidence when he was hand
This looks like the beginning of a strange and beautiful, but ultimately tragic friendship.
HOLY SHIT I JUST REALIZED TYRION WAS WHISTLING THE LANNISTERS THEME SONG RAINS OF CASTAMERE!!!!!!!
God gotta love the dialogs from 1-4
The guy who plays Varys is such a great actor
