@Quetzalcoatl Trant and Blount are Kings Guard but they're basically thugs in armor. Nothing special about them and they were merely assigned to the Kings Guard since they're from vassal houses under House Baratheon not for their skill. Jamie and Barristan were the only members left that were kingsguard because of their skill. The mad king had the greatest kings guard.
The fact that Clegane still felt the need to grab his sword even when there were so many guards speaks a lot about Barristan's reputation and skills in combat
This gets so much cooler when you think that between Baristan and the king don't just stand knights but kingsguard. Theoretically the best knights of the realm who are also surrounded by the city watch. Clegane is the last line of defense and yet he still gets ready to fight because he know that if Baristan attacks there aren't a lot of chances that anyone walks out of there alive
Best part about this in the books was Tyrion laying into Cersei for humoring Joffery in Barristan's dismissal. Barristan was a living legend among the small folk and any king he serves gains credibility by association. It was one of the only times Cersei actually admits to fucking up.

I love how Varys has respect for him and tries to defuse the situation, and how Hound still grabs his sword, despite there being entirety of Kingsguard. Hound knew Barristan wasn't joking when he said he could easily cut through all of them if he wanted.
When Barristan drew his sword, every hand in the room reached for their own blade, silencing every laughing mouth there. That's how you know that Barristan was an absolute badass.
Yeah the hound wasn't one to mess about, and he knew that Barristan Selmy was without a doubt the best swordsman in that room by a long way. If he wanted to he could have killed most of the kingsguard before janos slynt would have had enough time to shit himself.
Even though he was all the way in the back we can still see the Hound preparing himself, a sign of respect for Ser Barristan's skills. Clegane is probably the only one here who knew that Selmy wasn't bluffing when he said that he could cut through the five of them easily.

Well in the books he was punished, joffery sent 4 elite guards to kill him but selmy kills them even with being unarmed and unarmored that shows just how badass he really is.
He also says 'Melt it down and add it to the others' the other swords are all the swords of the enemys of aegon during aegons conquest to becoming king of westeros. so by saying this hes basically saying out loud that he is now the enemy of the king. And nobody does shit
He tried and failed in the books. In the show its apparent that no one wants to even come near him. He's possibly the greatest swordsman in their history..
The thing that cements this scene is that the bad ass Sandor Clegane, the Hound, reaches for this sword and looks very aware that Ser Barristan's claim of cutting through all five king's guard was not idle or exaggerating.
The Hound might be the only one in the room able to present an actual challenge for Barristan, and very quickly he was made very aware that that fight might be happening
barristan had so many good lines within the span of 3 minutes “only death relieves us of our sacred trust” “a man who profaned his blade with the blood of the king he swore to defend” “i am a knight, i shall die a knight” “even now, i can cut through the 5 of you like carving a cake” *“here boy. melt it down and add it to the others!”* a shame what d&d did to his character. he doesn’t even die that early on, not to mention he could’ve easily defended himself from the sons of the harpy if it was book accurate 😞
@maciejl20 it is. After he left, a few of the city guards were sent to apprehend him but Selmy killed all his pursuers and was able to leave the city unharmed.

In the books he took off but not before killing a bunch of goldcloaks, got to the White Sword Tower, wrote down his life achievements and his dismissal in the White Book. Absolute badassery

Barristan Selmy Draws his sword. The hound, who is, let's be honest, always down to throw down and choose violence and also is behind a layer of fully armoured Kingsguard, *hesitates.* The only other thing that makes him hesitate in the series is fire, his greatest fear. He's the king's personal bodyguard. A sword was drawn in the presence of the king. If he doesn't at least look ready to draw his, too, he'd be called a coward. No win situation for the Hound. With either choice, somebody's saying he's afraid of Barriston. Which might be the truth.
I would be too.. Barriston is a legend, the greatest living knight. Even GRRM himself has said that the only thing that gave Arthur Dayne the edge was Dawn.

King Joffrey’s expressions changing subtly throughout the scene is a testament of the actor’s incredible performance and convincing us to actually hate him.
"Here BOI!" The disrespect was real and on point. Barristan IMMEDIATELY became one of my favorite characters. I'll never forgive Dumb & Dumber for killing him off so soon. He lasted WAYY longer in the books and was very significant.

Depends on the warrior actually, it doesn't always have to be boldness, it could come down to being smart... In the words of Brown Ben Plumm (who is a sellword and a character in the books). He said "There are old sellswords, there are bold sellswords, but there are no old bold sellswords".. Ser Barristan would've died, but Robert asked them to spare him and treat him, cause he was such a badass.
Seems like the Hound was the only one in that room who got it. His age might have slowed him down a bit but the experience is still there and his mind wasn't dulled.

It was the converse of such. The CROWN declared themselves the enemy of Barristan by treating him so disrespectfully. So Barristan is thinking like, "What the hell! I'm so disrespected by this court and this boy pretender king then here! Take this damn sword and add it to your conquests!"
He's not second-greatest, he's tied for greatest. According to Martin, Dayne only gets the edge if he's using Dawn. With equal armament, it would be a draw.
I love how Janos Slynt reaches for his sword for appearances but never draws it, showing his cowardice. These subtle details that portray all the characters' personality traits is genius

The best part of the scene is the retitscence that the Hound has as he puts his hand on his sword. There are like ~30 (maybe more?) soldiers and knights between the Goldcloaks, Lannister soldiers, Kingsguard, etc. in the room and Sandor still wasn't feeling too excited to end up having to cross swords with a man in his mid 60's. Respect. The subtle 1.5 second shot of him slowly and cautiously touching his sword is better storytelling than the entire last 2 seasons of the show.
The worst thing I did recently with movies was watch season 8....Ruined all the plots they had going and just wasted them all and closed them up in the stupidest ways. ... “The past is already written. The ink is dry,”....HODOR HODOR HODOR.....wasted !

Selmy was one of the most popular and respected knights in westoroes. Stannis orders that he should not be harmed Renly even kept a place for him in his kingsguard

Selmy knows that neither brother is Robert's equal though. Mere pretenders to his legacy at best where Stannis is concerned, and nothing more than a poppinjay in Renly's case.

It was robert baratheon that ordered that claiming selmy fought bravery and he wouldn't execute a man for it. This is also what drove selmy to join Roberts kingsguard out of respect for him being a great warrior and a merciful man.
Cersei does such a good job of giving off the impression that she is operating on the same level as the other players, until you read her chapters in Feast where you get to see her thoughts and realize that she has absolutely no idea what the fuck she is doing and is actively working against her own best interests.
my absolute favourite part is when she gets manipulated by the high sparrow into restoring the faith militant thereby cementing her demise, and walks away all smug as if she pulled a 250 IQ chess move

If you would serve under the Kingslayer, not a one of you is fit to wear the white. Here, boy. Melt it down and add it to the others, if you like. It will do you more good than the swords in the hands of these five. Perhaps Lord Stannis will chance to sit on it when he takes your throne"
They adapted what they needed to. Something that George Martin said about writing screenplays is that you need to keep dialogue concise and punchy. In text, you can let characters monologue but it's harder to make that work on film
The best part of this scene is how when Barristan draws his sword, you can see the Hound’s hand immediately shoot to his sword hilt. He knew for a fact that if Barristan chose to fight nobody else in the room would even stand a chance, including all those guards.
3 badass things about this scene, 1. him telling the other 'kingsguard' that he could beat them easily and the fact that it's TRUE, 2. calling the king 'boy' and nobody can say anything about it, 3. telling joeffery to melt down his sword and add it to the iron throne, which if you remember is made of aegon's ENEMIES swords. He is arguably the best fighter in the current timeline and easily killed 4 elite guards. I think it's reasonable that he could escape the city and sail off. Haven't you seen his agility in his old age?....He approx. killed 12 sons and the 13th backstabbed him......which made him slow but still he killed 14 sons while he was on his knees.

This gets so much cooler when you think that between Baristan and the king don't just stand knights but kingsguard. Theoretically the best knights of the realm who are also surrounded by the city watch. Clegane is the last line of defense and yet he still gets ready to fight because he know that if Baristan attacks there aren't a lot of chances that anyone walks out of there alive
Best part about this in the books was Tyrion laying into Cersei for humoring Joffery in Barristan's dismissal. Barristan was a living legend among the small folk and any king he serves gains credibility by association. It was one of the only times Cersei actually admits to fucking up.

When Barristan drew his sword, every hand in the room reached for their own blade, silencing every laughing mouth there. That's how you know that Barristan was an absolute badass.

Even though he was all the way in the back we can still see the Hound preparing himself, a sign of respect for Ser Barristan's skills. Clegane is probably the only one here who knew that Selmy wasn't bluffing when he said that he could cut through the five of them easily.

Not enough credit goes to the actor who plays pycelle. He plays an act within an act and it’s done so believably.

In the book they do try to arrest him on his way out of the city. He downs two goldcloaks with a pocket knife before riding in the horizon.
The best part of the scene is the retitscence that the Hound has as he puts his hand on his sword. There are like ~30 (maybe more?) soldiers and knights between the Goldcloaks, Lannister soldiers, Kingsguard, etc. in the room and Sandor still wasn't feeling too excited to end up having to cross swords with a man in his mid 60's. Respect. The subtle 1.5 second shot of him slowly and cautiously touching his sword is better storytelling than the entire last 2 seasons of the show.
The worst thing I did recently with movies was watch season 8....Ruined all the plots they had going and just wasted them all and closed them up in the stupidest ways. ... “The past is already written. The ink is dry,”....HODOR HODOR HODOR.....wasted !

It was robert baratheon that ordered that claiming selmy fought bravery and he wouldn't execute a man for it. This is also what drove selmy to join Roberts kingsguard out of respect for him being a great warrior and a merciful man.
Cersei does such a good job of giving off the impression that she is operating on the same level as the other players, until you read her chapters in Feast where you get to see her thoughts and realize that she has absolutely no idea what the fuck she is doing and is actively working against her own best interests.
my absolute favourite part is when she gets manipulated by the high sparrow into restoring the faith militant thereby cementing her demise, and walks away all smug as if she pulled a 250 IQ chess move

If you would serve under the Kingslayer, not a one of you is fit to wear the white. Here, boy. Melt it down and add it to the others, if you like. The best part of this scene is how when Barristan draws his sword, you can see the Hound’s hand immediately shoot to his sword hilt. He knew for a fact that if Barristan chose to fight nobody else in the room would even stand a chance, including all those guards.
Which would mean that the only defender between the boy king and Barristan would be the Hound and he's probably thinking, "Oh, oh! Not good!"

3 badass things about this scene, 1. him telling the other 'kingsguard' that he could beat them easily and the fact that it's TRUE, 2. calling the king 'boy' and nobody can say anything about it, 3. telling joeffery to melt down his sword and add it to the iron throne, which if you remember is made of aegon's ENEMIES swords. He's publicly declaring himself joeffery's enemy and walks away untouched cause he's just THAT AWESOME
