@@paulgerrard9227 I think of booking sites more like agencies. They do charge a small markup because they are providing a service, including, sometimes, making it easier to book and compare prices. But of course it's usually less expensive to book on the official sites.
One thing I'd like to mention is that at Roma Termini they do not show your train platform number until about 10 minutes before the train departure time. Being used to the train stations in Japan where it can take 10 minutes just to get to your train platform (the dreaded Shinjuku station!) But I can see where it would be stressful if you are used to a much more organized or at least more timely system like what you have experienced in Japan. Yes, here, at most train stations, you can make your way to the tracks area and then once the track is announced, you just have to get to that platform. Thanks for watching and for commenting!
Omg I know what you mean by the shinjiku station! We were running and freaking out too 😂 excited for Italy tho…us Californians aren’t used to metros or trains so we like to leave super early in case we are at the wrong platform
Hi Elyssa, we took Trenitalia in July from Rome to Florence (third time we have done this now) and we booked very early in advance with train line so got a very good price for first class, really comfortable, plenty of leg room, a packed snack box and was very quiet. Negotiating both stations in Rome and Florence was so easy. Everyone should follow your advice for a smooth trip.
Sounds like you went about it perfectly! Glad you had such a smooth experience. This is why I like to plan my train travel in advance, so I can get just the kind of car service I want. Granted, between Rome and Florence, it's a short trip, but I'd still like to enjoy it! Thanks for your tips and for your kind support as always!
Thanks for making me "Rome sick"... good advice and I loved seeing these sights again. I agree about getting tickets on line ahead of time. Also, if you get them at the station find a manned booth. If you do use a ticket machine, ALWAYS be wary of "helpful locals", unfortunately they are likely to be scammers. This applies to getting bus and Metro tickets as well.
Everyone stands waiting for the platform number then its off to the races to get on the train. Just stay hyper vigilant to discourage the pick pockets. The trains themselves are super fast. Scenery not bad either when not in a tunnel.
One tip - when purchasing online, double check the time and be mindful of the listing in military time. I made that mistake once and had to buy another return ticket, which was more expensive since it was last minute, from Florence back to Rome this past spring!
That is an excellent tip! I am so used to the use of military time here but you are right, it can be confusing if you don't use it regularly. Thanks for the tip!
Military time is American English for the 24 hour clock I believe. As far as I know, there aren’t any European countries that don’t use the 24 hour clock for train transport
Yes, I think that's right. In Europe, it's simply standard to use the 24 hour clock but in the US, many people use the AM/PM system and so refer to the 24-hour clock as "military time". @@broomybank
WOW! It has been a long time since I visited Florence! I think it might be 20 years ago now!!! Back in the day, there was a ticket counter where the ticket agents spoke several different languages. You had to look up and see where the "English" line was (I think they showed flags to demonstrate the various languages). EEEKS! Kiosks always befuddle me. I, myself, would probably arrive a few hours early and struggle with it all. This new system does intimidate me, BUT I would still go!!!! Thank you, Elyssa!
Yes, I remember having to buy tickets from the people in the booths - and they are still there, which is great. But the kiosks have made it even easier. I use the kiosks for things like regional trains. For anything where a fast-train is involved, like going to Florence, Naples, Venice, etc, or where a more complicated journey is involved, like getting to Cinque Terre, I love booking this calmly in advance, so I have time to research the different options. Glad you found the video helpful!
Hi Elyssa, Thanks for your channel. I just found out about it this past week. I have already watched quite a few videos of yours on this channel. It has been a while since we visited Rome - 2013 to be exact. I learned a lot about some of the hidden places in Rome after watching your videos this past week. Thanks to this video of yours about Italo. When I visited back in 2013, Italo had just got started and the only way to Florence from Rome was from the Tiburtina station nearby. Since I had ample time, I visited the exact spot where to board the train a day earlier so that there is no rush for our very early morning train to Florence. Based on your video I see that probably you may not have to go to Tiburnita for to take the train - straight from Termini. I will be referencing your videos for my future plans to Rome and Florence. It is very satisfying to see an American living in Rome and making videos in English for the wider audience - feels right at home.
Thanks a lot for letting me know you enjoy my videos and find them helpful. I hope you'll get back to Rome and Florence soon. And I really appreciate your kind comments!
Elyssa, thank you. your video is the compressive How To train video i have found on YT. You very clearly explained things and made this worrier at ease for my first trip out of Termini to Florence in May. I am going with my slightly disabled mom (she would kill me if she know i called her that 😆) With her it is so much easier if I know where to go and what to do while traveling. You have given me confidence not just traveling in Italy but the rest of my train travel throughout Germany and France too. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH your Romewise, Florencewise, and soon to be Venicewise have been so helpful planning this amazing journey.

Can your channel get any better? We're going to Rome in a couple months and there is so much good information here! We are planning on taking the train to Florence and this video is just the bit of information we were looking for. Thanks!
I travel only First Class on Italy’s trains. If I’m limited to a Regionale train I always check to see if it offers First Class, some do. I had a very dangerous stalking event on the train in 2nd Class, I had a First Class ticket but didn’t know I was in a 2nd Class car until the Conductress came in and told First class ticket holders to follow her. She saved my life.
last time I had a Eurail pass it was first class. This time I have a 2nd class and the difference is real! Especially with the limited luggage storage. So many people have bags the size of wardrobes!
I enjoy your videos of Italy. I got back yesterday from a three-week travel there, and your videos gave me ideas. It is very possible to find places in Milan, Rome, Florence that have zero other people on the street. It depends a lot on your tolerance for anonymity and quiet, and your ability to walk away from crowds whatever the cost of missing a tourist attraction. I actually found the Trevi Fountain by accident while walking -wherever-, and quickly ditched the place. And I happened on the Spanish Steps from the top, quite be accident on a wonderful solitary walk. Thanks
Thanks so much for letting me know you enjoy my videos. I'm glad you found them helpful when planning your trip! Yes, Rome is full of places where you won't find huge crowds. As you said, you just have to get away from the big must-see sites. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Elyssa, glad to have found you before our trip to Rome early March. I am binge watching your videos to prepare well. Great advice and tips to make the most out of our trip, thanks! Oh and BTW, new subscriber here!

Thanks so much Elyssa, I'm going to Europe in October and taking a day trip from Rome to Florence. This vlog was super helpful for me and it's taken a bit of anxiety out of it all. Thank you again! kx
Hello ELYSSE 👍 great Rome travel Vlog like always .. As shared previously I have an upcoming trip to Fabulous Rome and thinking to go into Assisi via trains transportation if possible I would enjoy of these Rome to Assisi 💐
Thanks so much! Going from Rome to Assisi is a little different as there is no non-stop fast-train option. All the trains to Assisi from Rome are regional trains. The journey takes a little over 2 hours. You can find some tickets that are non-stop, and more tickets that include one or more stops. So Italo is not an option for this, and you should look on Trenitalia (or Trainline). Or are you asking for a video about what to see and do in Assisi?
I've been through the Florence train station 6 times so far, the most recent being last October. Great video, even for folks who have some experience there. I knew about the underground shopping mall, but didn't know about the ramp to the outside - great tip! It was fun reliving my experience there, made me want to go back to Florence already!
I love and hate Europe. I was fascinated by the stunning scenery and rich history, but I was overwhelmed by the high cost. I think a discount coupon saved me.
I would add that there are discounts for seniors, me and you, youth, etc. May wife and I did three weeks in Italy all by train, booked in advance with the "silver" discount card and applied the discount to business or first class everywhere it was offered.
Very good point! That's what I mean by booking early. Sometimes there are discounts you can only get in advance. Good to know you can still get senior discounts on the trains, as they have otherwise removed senior discounts at most sites in Italy.
That church Santa Maria Novella is one of the most beautiful in Italy and you might as well start trip right! Also, beware, we bought a train from Tropea to Salerno. The train came and before first stop they checked our ticket and we were on the competitor train. He wanted a 200 euro fine each. We got off at first stop to buy ticket thru them and lady explained if we waited an hour the train we had already ticketed was coming. Moral: be careful which train cause they are not interchangeable.
I love Santa Maria Novella so much and it's a shame more people don't visit it. I think with a short visit to Florence, it would be easy to miss. But it's so full of masterpieces! I don't know if you can visit any time soon but right now as I write this to you, they are renovating Masaccio's "Holy Trinity" and for 1.50€ you can climb the scaffolding and get right up close to it! You can actually look at the holy trinity straight on (as opposed to looking up at it from the floor.) It is AMAZING!! Sorry to hear of your icky experience with getting on the wrong train! Thanks for sharing so others can learn from your experience!
So glad it was helpful! I JUST published this video about how to take the perfect day trip from Rome to Florence: ua-cam.com/video/uSRx9KKQu2Y/v-deo.html I hope you and your mom have a wonderful trip!

What a fantastic video - thank you. I assumed our train would terminate at Florence SMN, but I’ll research its final stop, as you highlighted that might not be the case. Top tip on the shopping arcade exit too - that’s fantastic. All the best & 👍
@@lolainma3218 the main station boards normally only show the final destination, not the calling points; so it’s worth knowing. It saves confusion at a busy station if you know this info
And how exactly to validate your online ticket if you travel by a regional train(the one that you can’t book seats and can’t choose the coach number)? You showed us at the 8:11 that there is a certain machine there but you introduced a physical tickets in it. So do I need to have my online train ticket priorly printed when I’m using the regional trains?
If you purchase a ticket with your smart device, you need to create a login and password, and they also encourage you to download their app. So if you need to validate your electronic ticket because it's a regional or Intercity train, you just use the app to do it.
The Trenitalia app isn’t available on iPhone unless you change your Apple ID to Italy btw. I just used the browser version. I also had to ‘check in’ online before each train trip otherwise there is a fine
Wonderful! I’m saving for my trip later this year. Will check out the playlist. Which class would you reccoment on the train? And if a train says “1 change”, do you have to come off? (Train from Florence to Rome airport)
Thank you! Yes, if it says 1 change, it means you change trains. So from Florence to Rome airport, usually you go from Florence to Roma Termini and then switch at Termini to the Leonardo Express that takes you to FCO.
Thank you so much for the info. I feel so much better now. Are there lots of linen shops in Florence? When we were in Croatia there were lots of inexpensive little markets with linen clothing.
Thank you so much for this piece of info, could you highlight on accommodation as well? I plan to visit in october main reason to explore and learn more about Niccolo Machiaveli.
Thank you for watching and for your suggestion. I'll add this topic to my list. Meanwhile, you may want to check these pages: www.florencewise.com/florence-neighborhoods.html www.florencewise.com/florence-in-october.html I hope that helps!
What a complete video, I loved it! I am going to be in Florence in a couple of months and this video helped me a lot! Thanks. One question: I need to go to the Piazzale Michalangelo as soon as I arrive to catch the sunset. My idea is to go to my Airbnb, leave my luggage and take a taxi. I would need to go back to the smn train station to take it there, right? Uber is very expensive 😢 Thanks again
Thanks a lot, I'm glad you found it helpful! First of all, if you want to catch the sunset, give yourself more time than you think. Remember that the "sunset time" is the time the sun is already below the horizon. You'll want to get there at least 20 minutes prior to sunset time to enjoy whatever clouds and colors there may be. If you are going to your AirB&B to check in, ask them to call a taxi for you. Or, you could walk, depending on where the AirB&B is: ua-cam.com/video/uCDt7EhELM4/v-deo.html
Hello, I have having a hard time finding tickets from Cinque Terre to Venice. We go in April 2024 so it may be a bit early but I just want the fastest possible time to get there? Most are saying around 5-6 hours which is long but doable. I also see trains for Italo that say 2 hours but no details on it? Would that be true that it is so fast?
Thanks for watching my video. First of all, while I understand wanting to plan ahead, I do think you are a bit too early for April 2024. I would look now at options that are closer, so you can at least get an idea of the itinerary and pricing. Then, keep checking for April 2024. I'd probably start looking for those tickets from January 2024 on. This is something of a complex journey, as Cinque terra is somewhat remote with limited transportation options. So the first thing you have to do is get to the main transport hub of Cinque Terre, La Spezia. From there, it looks to me like the best and fastest options involve going to Pisa, then Florence, then Venice. There are a FEW options that take you from Monterosso - Milan and then from Milan to Venice only with regional trains, but this combo is not offered that often and it's actually slower than the above options because it's done with regional (slower) trains. No matter what, the journey is going to be fairly well all day (5-7 hours.) I still suggest using Trainline to check the schedules and see all your options.
Italian trains are great but it can be stressful at Rome as they often do not put which platform until a few minutes before it's leaving, leading to looking for it and joining a rush of passengers.
You are so right! What we do is check to make sure the train is not delayed, and then around 10 minutes before departure time, we go ahead through security and make our way to the general platform area. Then from there we can monitor the boards for the track number.
Thanks for the great video. It works wonderful for panicky people like me. I'll be travelling to Italy mid of March. Will the airconditioner or heater, be turn on inside of the train. I'm just worried of the stuffiness inside the train if they turn on the heater.
Thanks for watching! I'm glad if my video reassured you. I also tend to suffer a bit from over-heating. In all the years I've taken these high-speed trains in Italy, I've never once felt uncomfortable due to the air temperature inside the car. March is a funny month and it can be really cold so if they need to, they will have the heat on but it won't be overwhelming.
Hi..fabulous guide...just one query..I will be taking the trenitalia fast train from Roma termini to smn, Florence and from there take the regional train of the same company to pisa central. So do we have to get out through exit and then get in at smn? We have 1 HR time between the two trains. Thanks .
Thank you! You don't need to leave the station to catch your regional train to Pisa. Make sure that the train leaves from SMN as Florence does have other smaller train stations. But if your Florence - Pisa train leaves from SMN, it will be from one of the tracks there. There is not much to do in the station itself but you can shop on the lower levels as I showed in my video, or stop for something to eat or drink.
@@Romewise thanks very much for the reply..and one thing want to add that all regional trains are now to be validated as per the oct 23 policy...because my online tkt for coming days ask me to validate..this can be done online through the link shared by trenitalia in their confirmation mail. Many thanks...
Great video! My daughter and I are travelling from Rome Airport to Florence in August. We have not taken trains before. Do you suggest buying 1 ticket or purchasing separately as I believe we need to go to Rome to get the train to Florence. Definitely a bit nervous!
I understand you are nervous but please try not to be. It is easier than you might think. If you want to take the train from Rome airport to Florence, then when you land at Fiumicino, go buy your ticket to Termini station. Once you arrive at Termini station, go to a kiosk and buy your Florence tickets. I don't suggest buying your Florence tickets in advance as you just never know if your flight might be delayed or if you might have to content with lost luggage. Since you really can't time it perfect, I suggest you simply get your tickets on the fly. In August you won't have any trouble finding tickets from Roma Termini to Florence. These trains run often throughout the day. Have a great visit!
This is entirely up to you. Many people find they can research things online and often they enjoy doing it this way. But if you want to leave all the stress and worries to someone else, a travel agent is the way to go. We offer custom trip planning. If you're interested in learning more about our services and rates, you can fill out this form (no obligation): www.romewise.com/italy-trip-planning-services.html
We plan on taking the fast train from Rome to Florence, but what do you suggest for going from Florence to Sorrento? Is there a fast train from Florence to Naples and then we’d like to take the ferry from Naples. Or, do we have to go back to Rome to get to Naples on a fast train?
You can use the Trenitalia website to look at train schedules, but when it comes to checking multiple transportation options, I always use this website: www.rome2rio.com/
Thanks for watching! I'm glad you find my videos helpful. Yes, there are lockers in the Florence train station. As you get off the train, the luggage storage facility is all the way on the left-hand side.
What is the name of the underground mall and where on google maps is 12:31 ? I don't want to exit the mall and find myself on the wrong end of the station far away from the hotel where above-ground may ended up better.
The mall is just called "Galleria Commerciale Santa Maria Novella" where Santa Maria Novella is the name of the station (which is named for the church you can see in the background at 12:31), and Galleria Commerciale just means shopping center. The exact spot at 12:31 is called the Piazza dell'Unita Italiana. Here is a pin: maps.app.goo.gl/Gspm6fefBN85ipDR8 I find from here, it's easy to go in any direction.
Can you take that same underground strategy on return to Rome? I plan to only be making a day trip to Florence. Thank you for all your helpful videos:)
Thank you! Glad you found it helpful. If you watch the part that leads me to the underground, I filmed the floor which gives you indications of where you are and where you are going. I assure you, it's easier than it might look.
If you buy your ticket through a third party then you will be unable to change your seat unless you call company download the app, open an account and give them your booking info and then they will add your ticket to your account so you can update your ticket seating. I was just there it is very very very safe. They have private security and military police and regular police. I would also tell you to make sure to buy a flexible ticket you will thank me later. Also go for the business class with Italo. Buy your tickets early and bring food and drinks you get very little to nothing with business except a cup of soda and peanuts. Business is better than standard. Standard has everyone in it.
I'm not sure what you mean by big luggage, but as far as I know you don't have to buy a different ticket. Look at the rules for the ticket when you purchase it.
Yes, Omio is another company that does what Trainline does. I prefer Trainline as I just find it cleaner and easier to use. I think there are a few others out there, too, but after trying several, Trainline is my train portal of choice.
Hi Elyssa, I was hoping maybe you could help me. After watching so many videos I found yours to be so informative. I will be traveling to Italy via a cruise. One of our stops is in Florence. I have done some research but honestly I am so confused as to what train to take from Livorno Centrale to Firenze Santa Maria Novella. And also we would like to stop in Pisa so if we do that can we get back on the train for Florence using the same ticket for Florence? My gosh I hope you can help!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!
I'm glad you enjoy my channel and my content and find it helpful. For your trip from Livorno port - have you asked your cruise company if they offer shore excursions? That might be a nice way to go as it's all organized. But if you want to go on your own, you can use www.rome2rio.com to check the EXACT steps to take to get from point A to point B. And I recommend Trainline for train tickets and there you can see the schedules and fares for all types of trains, fast, local, regional, etc: prf.hn/l/p3Wpxqe Hope that helps!
So once we land in Rome, I need to get the speed train to Florence. Do I take the Leonardo Express to Termini and that’s where the high speed trains are? And we aren’t flying until Sept. 2025; so when should I look to buy that premium ticket? And what if I have the ticket booked online, and we miss the train for our specific time? What do we do?
Great Videos . I was checking train tickets from Venice to Florence on Dec 29. Surprising there dont seem to trains on Dec 28th and 29th ( Italo ). Any idea about this .... Thanks
Thanks so much! I'm pretty sure it's way too soon to be looking for December tickets. Most things in Italy are not bookable so long in advance. I suggest you keep checking back.
Hi. Just wondering what identification I would need to purchase a Senior train ticket. Can I use my US driver's license or passport? Thanks for your videos. Very informative and entertaining.
Thank you for watching. If you are entitled to a senior discount, you should be able to just purchase the ticket with any official government-issued photo ID. If you are travelling in Italy, you should have your passport with you anyway.
Hello. I will arrive in Rome at Fiumicino Airport (international flight) ,then will take fast train to Florence. How much time should I spare from landing time to train departing ? Thank you.
As I mention in the video, I recommend not booking this in advance, as you just never know if there will be flight delays or if you'll have any luggage issues. I'd wait until you land, get to Termini, and then get your Florence train ticket. If you really want to book it in advance, I suggest about 3 hours from the time you land.
Thanks for watching my video. As I mentioned, you will get an email with a PDF. That PDF is your ticket. Also I spoke about how you do not need to validate your tickets if you buy the high-speed ones.
Well it depends on you and how much you want to see and how much time you have. I would always recommend staying longer in Rome and Florence, but I also realize many people just don't have time. Here's my recent video about taking a day trip to Florence: ua-cam.com/video/uSRx9KKQu2Y/v-deo.html
One thing that I found inconvenient when attempting to purchase tickets from the kiosks using a credit card is that they asked for a “pin” number. Credit Cards don’t have pin numbers; or do they? Because of this I had to go to the ticket counter and the clerk had to input all of our information and print the tickets. We needed 6 tickets and this took around 15 minutes.
Hmm that0s a shame - the kiosks ask for a pin if you insert a "bancomat" which is basically an ATM card, as opposed to a credit card. If you insert a credit card, it should not ask for a pin. It's unfortunate you had some difficulty with these machines but I'm glad you were able to resolve it.
if you preebook train tickets and your transportation (flights etc) are running late can you use your oiginal timed tickets on other train rides on that same day with that carrier ?
If you know beforehand that you will be late, you can try to move the time if you have a changeable ticket. If you miss your train, then you probably can't use your ticket any more. These things will also depend on the class of ticket you book and through which platform. But bottom line, typically, when you MISS your train entirely, you forfeit your ticket and need to get a new one. This is why I suggest waiting until you land in Italy before booking your Florence train ticket (if that's what you're trying to do.)

Yes, I think that's right. In Europe, it's simply standard to use the 24 hour clock but in the US, many people use the AM/PM system and so refer to the 24-hour clock as "military time". @@broomybank
As always, GREAT travel info!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Elyssa,
Thanks for your channel.
Thank you so much for letting me know you found this video helpful for your upcoming trip!

Oh my gosh what a harrowing experience! I'm so glad you had someone watching over you!
last time I had a Eurail pass it was first class. This time I have a 2nd class and the difference is real! Especially with the limited luggage storage. So many people have bags the size of wardrobes!
@@newgabe09 So true!

Hello ELYSSE 👍
great Rome travel Vlog
like always ..
As shared previously
I have an upcoming trip
to Fabulous Rome and thinking
to go into Assisi via trains transportation
if possible I would enjoy of these
Rome to Assisi 💐
Thanks for letting me know you enjoyed my video! I'm glad it brought back nice memories!
Did you find it to be safe there? Rome?
@@bridgetwoodward8031 Absolutely! I stayed there 6 nights on my own and never felt unsafe.
I love and hate Europe. I was fascinated by the stunning scenery and rich history, but I was overwhelmed by the high cost. I think a discount coupon saved me.
My family and I will travel to Italy this summer! Thank you so much for your helpful video!
You're so welcome! Thanks for watching!
I’m going to Rome, Florence, and Venice soon and your videos have been so incredibly helpful. Thank you for doing such a good job.
Thank you so much for your kind comments! I'm so glad you find my videos helpful!
@Romewise, how to ensure we are getting on the right train? Is there a visible sign on the train , train car itself?
@@Katrina-ps6jn same way you ensure you are getting on the right plane at the airport

You are so right!! 😅😂

One question: I need to go to the Piazzale Michalangelo as soon as I arrive to catch the sunset. My idea is to go to my Airbnb, leave my luggage and take a taxi. I would need to go back to the smn train station to take it there, right? Uber is very expensive 😢
Thanks again
Thanks a lot, I'm glad you found it helpful!
First of all, if you want to catch the sunset, give yourself more time than you think. Remember that the "sunset time" is the time the sun is already below the horizon. You'll want to get there at least 20 minutes prior to sunset time to enjoy whatever clouds and colors there may be.
If you are going to your AirB&B to check in, ask them to call a taxi for you. Or, you could walk, depending on where the AirB&B is:

My train leaves from Tiburtina!
Yep, some trains do!
No matter what, the journey is going to be fairly well all day (5-7 hours.)
I still suggest using Trainline to check the schedules and see all your options.
@@Romewise Thanks. That's good to know.
Great.
Thanks dear! Ramesh
You're most welcome
We're looking for recommendations if we should travel to Italy by ourselves or thru a travel agent?

What is the name of the underground mall and where on google maps is 12:31 ? I don't want to exit the mall and find myself on the wrong end of the station far away from the hotel where above-ground may ended up better.
The mall is just called "Galleria Commerciale Santa Maria Novella" where Santa Maria Novella is the name of the station (which is named for the church you can see in the background at 12:31), and Galleria Commerciale just means shopping center.
The exact spot at 12:31 is called the Piazza dell'Unita Italiana. Here is a pin:

If you buy your ticket through a third party then you will be unable to change your seat unless you call company download the app, open an account and give them your booking info and then they will add your ticket to your account so you can update your ticket seating. I was just there it is very very very safe. They have private security and military police and regular police. I would also tell you to make sure to buy a flexible ticket you will thank me later. Also go for the business class with Italo. Buy your tickets early and bring food and drinks you get very little to nothing with business except a cup of soda and peanuts. Business is better than standard. Standard has everyone in it.

What do you think of omio? I'd not heard of trainline before but good to know
Yes, Omio is another company that does what Trainline does.
@@Romewise thanks !
