  • Many popular cruise lines use the port of Civitavecchia for Mediterranean cruises. Royal Caribbean, NCL, Costa, MSC, Disney, and more. These cruise lines offer their own forms of transportation into the city of Rome, but did you know you can also just take the train? #cruise #cruiseline #rome

    I'm a big pre-planner when it comes to trips. Just about everything in this vid I had already done on my own before it popped up in my feed (Trenitalia app, pre-bought tickets, mapped the walk to the train station, etc). However, the tip on getting off the train at St. Pietro instead of at Termini was gold. I paid no attention to the actual stops while planning and just went with the recommended route to Termini to get in to town, AND WE ARE GOING TO THE VATICAN, lol. We were already a bit crunched for time and I was struggling to find a pocket for us to eat lunch. Now instead of getting off at Termini 20 minutes later and taking the A train to the Vatican, we'll have almost an hour to eat after getting off at St. Pietro. Less than a single minute of a half-hour video will save me an hour. Thank you so much.

    Using the Trenitalia app is a huge benefit - I also used it during our cruise in May. There are actually nonstop trains from Civitavecchia to Rome Termini ("Frecciabianca" Express train). If you can book some days ahead the price is also very reasonable, I payed for one way in First Class incl. seat reservation 9,90 EUR, so around 20EUR return. Just consider that this train doesn't stop at San Pietro which would be the better station if you want to visit Vatican. For all other city areas Rome Termine is good.

      That is very useful information thanks. We've only used a regular ticket in the past doing this journey. How does the "validation" process work when using the app version of the ticket?

    • @markuslehberger5823
      @markuslehberger5823 9 місяців тому

      @@markeaston7353 as I bought the online ticket for a specific train, there was no validation necessary. I just showed my ticket in the app to the conductor.

    We took a cruise from Rome around the Mediterranean, arriving in Rome a couple days early to do all the touristy stuff. We considered all our options to get to the port (there were 7 of us in two families), and in the end decided to hire a van to take us to the port. It fit all of us and our luggage and was very reasonably priced.

    Thank you for your video. 2022 and 2023 I was on a Europe cruise out of Rome. The train is the cheapest way to get to Rome. Taxi was 10 euro each way to and from the port. I recommend the taxi or bus because you will walk alot. From the ship to Rome by train it will take around 2 hours. That's included taxi, waiting for the next train, buying ticket and getting information of where you want to go see in Rome. Please plan at least 2 hours to get back to the ship or you will be a pier runner. This video bring back alot of great memories, thank you again.

    Termini Station is a nightmare - and a prime pickpocket spot. also, as you noted, the Civitacvecchia line's platform is so far from the main terminal. For those reasons, we always get off/on at either the S.Pietro or Trastevere stations which are closer to the places most people would want to see. Also, we have always been able to take FREE shuttles buses from the CV port entrance directly to our ships (and vice-versa); so you only have to walk between the train station and the port entrance (near the Tourist Info stall).

    Just be aware, if you are on an Oasis class RCL ship, the dock is a lot further away. There is a free shuttle to a central square in Civit but the walk to the train station is much further, about 35-40 minutes.

    • @bonniedennis7961
      @bonniedennis7961 9 місяців тому

      Yes. That central square was hard to find when walking from the train station. A very long walk with luggage. It’s best to take a taxi from the train station to the ship (if you can do this) or to the central square for the free bus to your ship. The port area is huge.

    The one time we sailed from “Rome” we took one of the Rome to Civvi independent transport services. (arranged by our travel agent so I don’t know which one). The driver got stopped by the police, we assumed for speeding. We weren’t allowed off the minibus and spent half an hour in a lay-by staring at a picnic table and trash can while the driver and police resolved whatever the problem was. I think the next time I’d go with the cruise’s transfer service.

At the train station we bought a ticket to Rome . It was an hour ride to St Pietro . After a couple of hours at the vatican ,we took a metro to the Colloseum . We were docked in Civi-etc on our cruise in 2009. I don’t remember a long walk to the train station, but I was younger then. We did get off the train at the stop by the Vatican because we wanted to go there first. Walking the city was interesting on the cobblestone streets but we did the same things you did; get pizza, gelato and an espresso so we could use the coffee shop bathroom. We just sidled up to the coffee bar and ordered our espresso’s, tossed it down just like the other Italians at the bar then went to do our business. The walk to the train at the station was lo-o-ng. At least 15 minutes but the train was so nice. I think we got in the first class car by mistake but no one questioned us. We’ll be there on our cruise on the Sun Princess in April ( never go in the summer) but we may just pass on going into the city and stay in Civi. I really enjoy your videos and your sense of humor!

    I did this a few months ago on my Toscana cruise with Costa - I was amazed that there were so many organisations selling the train tickets (at a marked up price) directly outside the train station. I did think that Rome was a bit awkward to get to from the port - it's SO cumbersome to get from the ship to the town, then to the station, then into Rome. My advice - just go visit Rome another time, and spend your day enjoying the ship while I've so quiet!

    Caught the train to Rome back in August and was able to book the tickets through our UK Trainline app. Very easy trip but we had a shuttle to the edge of the port which meant we walked through a shopping street to get to the station. Walked back, it was a long way in the heat. Our ship was docked a mile down the dock from the security gate!

    We took the train from the Civitavecchia cruise port to Rome...pretty easy to find the bus to the train station (it was the last one to the left and cost only a few euros), and there was English-speaking staff at the Tourist InfoPoint who helped me buy my ticket. Unfortunately, though I specified I wanted a ticket to Tuscolana station in Rome, and I asked (via Google Translate) the conductor if the train was stopping at that station, which he confirmed...it didn't: just breezed on through it without slowing. Fortunately, the next stop was Termini and we simply took the Metro back to where we needed to be. So the lesson is: have a backup plan. Next time I'll use the app!

    about twisting your ankle.....same thing happened to a friend, then she fell and smashed her knee, she was taken to a hospital, did not make it back to the ship on time. Luckily her daughter ran back to the ship to get her passport. She was in the hospital for 3 days because her knee needed surgery. Then she stay at a hotel for a few days to heal. Point is, if the ship had left with her passport she would of had a huge problem. So take your passport with you. Just make sure it can not be stolen from you.

    Great info thanks! We leave soon for Rome and will be taking the train from Rome to the port. I did get the TrenItalia app, and they have a train/bus combo ticket you can buy. Not sure if you were aware of that. Family of four with luggage is only 37 euros from Roma Termini to Civitavecchia, train & bus.

    Isn't Barcelona cruise port moving from where it is. When we cruised out of Rome we started there so we hired a car to drive us to Citivecchia and I think that was the best thing.

    We have been to CV a number of times. We often get an AirB&B and enjoy the town. This last time we took a cooking class as well :)
    I will look into a smaller transport though, just to compare price - we have always taken the train. But with luggage that might be a good option. Thanks!
