Don't forget that for local trains or non high speed trains, you will need to "convalidare" your paper ticket in the little yellow or green machine before boarding the train.
recently is not longer mandatory because the tiket is valid only for that specific train so if u forget it is not a big deal... but anyway do it, you never know
Actually, it depends. You can ask at the ticket office for an "open ticket" you can validate any platform, and lets you ride any train as long as it stops at the chosen destination. Otherwise, you can choose for a specific reason, which ticket doesn't have to be validated.
An addition I'd like to make when it comes to checking your platform: Big train stations will have platforms numbered for example 1 to 15, BUT in addition they can have platforms 1 OVEST, 2 OVEST etc. or 1 EST, 2 EST etc., which means 1 WEST or 1 EAST and these are completely separate platforms to platform 1. This is something I personally fell for once, but never again :)
Yes, Italian trains are definitely a class apart-so efficient and enjoyable to ride! 🚄💖 Glad to hear you're excited for your trip. April in Italy sounds like a dream. Safe travels and enjoy every moment!
Info for disabled passengers: is possibile to ask in advance to be helped (if you are blind or use a wheelchair). Bigger stations have a place called Sala Blu (blue room) where disabled passengers could be assisted. Ask to Trenitalia!
Hello, I am going to Italy in October for the first time with my husband. He is disabled and uses the walker. He has Parkinson's and cannot walk fast enough. We have to use the train from Rome to Florence then from Florence to Venice. I am very worried about him and worried that we might miss the train if they change the platform suddenly. Can the blue room provide us with a wheelchair and would they push it for him?
PRO tip on Regional/REG Trains (local trains, the slow ones) you can buy the tiket on the train BUT you have to pay 5€ more and it's better if you actively find the tiket inspector inside the train and don't wait for him, otherwise he thinks you are trying to not paying it. it is useful in emergency situations.

Great video & spot on with the information. One extra bit though is when travelling from Rome Termini be aware that there are more platforms than the those on the main concourse. We assumed that "platform 2 est" was showing the departure time was 'estimated' as ... but it was actually "platform 2 east". There are more platforms on the east side of the station with the same numbering starting from 1 to 5 (I think). We nearly missed our train departure but for a local who noticed that we looked anxious as our train was due to depart & it was not on platform 2. He then told us about the other platforms. And yes we did catch the train as I can whistle very loudly and the conductor held the train for us as it was moving out, very considerate.
This is why it's always important to give yourself at least 10 extra minutes to sort things out and yeah the Italians are always super helpful if you look like you need help or if you ask around for help but I'm glad that you got to where you needed to go
On trains you don’t have assigned seat you need to either validate your paper ticket or if you have your ticket booked on web site you need to log in on the calendar day of your travel, go into your journey and click “check-in”.
Ciao! I rode my first European train in 1974, traveling from Salzburg where I was studying, to various destinations. It was easy back then and even easier today. In Italy, the trains run from city centers, with stops in between, to city centers. Check the frequency from your departure to your destination online, arrive at least 20 minutes before, go to a vending machine, select your preferred language, buy a ticket, for local travel validate it in a tiny box that stamps the time etc on it, and go to the platform and get on or wait till it arrives. Trains move fast. It may depart in a couple minutes. It will be comfortable safe traveling. Renting a car is silly if staying in Italy unless you cannot walk or plan on staying at a resort not in the city. I have been all over the world, Europe and Italy. Traveling by train and day excursions are comfortable and fun.
As a traveller on Italian HSR I always choose Italo. They're simply cheaper, so if you're the type that wanna save money, most of the times Italo's the way to go.
@@GregorBrown Eh you gotta chase sales and offers, but Trenitalia has always been a lot more expensive. Then again it depends on how much money you want to spend, I'm a student in my 20s so 4 hours in second class for 30 euros will do great for me, my advice is more for pennyless guys than the type of people that can already afford to travel from other continents here
As an italian I can confirm Italo prices are pretty much always cheaper than frecciarossa's, and their trains are also more comfortable, they have snack machines, etc
I have found italo unreliable. When they switch carriages reserved seats are a chaotic mess and seating is less generous. I prefer advance purchase doscounted and special offer trenitalia where better class choices can be discounted. And more frequent

Whilst it is indeed correct to say that in larger cities in Italy there is a main station is often not guaranteed that trains will even serve a main station. For instance in Florence there are some trains that serve either Rifredi or Campo di Marte Stations, whilst in Milan there are other cases of long distance trains bypassing Milan Centrale or terminating at Porta Garibaldi
We visited Italy and went through the Termini station. Indeed need to be watchful for your platform. We were trying to figure things out an a smaller man came up, asked to see our ticket and walked us to the gate. We were worried it was some kind of scam but couldnt figure out how, thanked him, tipped him 5 Euro. Love the train to Venice!!!

I took an Italo train from Naples to Rome Termini earlier this month and was surprised how busy it was on a Monday afternoon. I think all seats were taken, at least in my coach and I noticed how few seats were available throughout the train when I booked. And it was cheap as well, a lot cheaper than expected and what I would pay on the UK rail network.
@@nathaly759 I am sure you can book on the day or just go to the station and buy your tickets, however I would prebook to ensure you get a seat. I booked online about 2 weeks prior to travel and there were very few of the cheaper seats left and only a handful of seats in each carriage. I have to say that I paid just over €10 for the single journey. There are regional slow trains, as well as two fast train companies, Italo and Trenitalia and plenty of trains throughout the day.
I'm italian, been traveling by train all my life, I don't really know how I got here lol. I was just very curious to see a foreigner's perspective on our transport system and I have to say that I was very fascinated for some reason and I ended up watching the whole video lol. Hope you liked our country!
I just got back from a few weeks in Italy from Canada. All I can say was how amazing and easy it is to use public transport as a tourist. Between that and the walkability of cities, I hope Italians (really most of Europe) appreciates the freedom of requiring a car to drive everywhere.
Also, DON’T put a small bag, like a purse, sling bag or fanny pack, in the overhead rack, even in first class. Keep it in your lap and out the big bag up top.
Thank you for this really helpful video. I'm not very experienced at public transport in my own country let alone one where English is not the primary language. Your video has made me feel much less anxious about train travel in Italy.
Great advice... Bringing my son in June, and we plan on taking the train from Venice to Florence and then to Rome.. so this has been really helpful for my research.. Thank you 🙏
Rode Italian trains in Sicily and from Rome to Bologna and back. WONDERFUL experience. No issues. Bought the tickets from the person behind the desk, not the machines, as it was my first time.
Bello che qualcuno sponsorizzi l'Italia. È interessante come uno straniero sia curioso riguardo al nostro sistema. Purtroppo va detto che Trenitalia non è il massimo, ma Italo e il Frecciarossa penso che siano il top
Good advices! Funny about the last minute change of platform, it is really true! About the app, it works really well, you can check when the train you are expecting is coming, that way you can stop running in a change.
I want to know if these apps provided by the train company tell you when your train is coming so that you don't have to be looking up at a board constantly (and also if they'll alert you to changes in train platforms.)
@@Neville60001 Once you know your train number (from your ticket), you can follow it up from the app, tha app tells you where it is at any moment, what platform it is arriving, the app is very intuitive, you'll find the info quickly.
Well done and cheers, first time I trained around Europe was early 90's went back for 9 weeks in 17 train again, Now my kids have grown up and can pay there own way there coming this time, May, June Yeeah Baby.
I was stationed in Italy for three years, just south of Rome, Gaeta. If you’re in Roma Termini watch out for the gypsies! Seven or eight of them come around you and next thing you know your wallet or purse is gone. 😮. Also, never get a hotel near the train station in Rome, that’s a very dumpy part of town. There are two subway lines in Rome one station stops at the train station to get around further out. When I was there, the local non-IC trains tended to have no air conditioning, smelly and slow.
I was watching this while waiting for the train, then you said they might change the bin last 2 minutes, i had exactly that and they did change it in fact. U saved me 😅
Good day to you! I am a senior rider on HONDA motorcycle from Japan. I am enjoying camping ,touring and upload video. Your travel video is so nice! Awesome! Full supported ! Have a nice day my friend!
I always book my tickets online ahead of time….it’s about a 3month look ahead for purchasing the tickets. Love and use train travel all the time. Also, sometimes the train you take may not be listed when you look at the board….don’t worry, the trains originating city may be listed, just watch the info scroll and it will turn up….have fun….ridden that train many times…
I'm glad I just discovered this video, as my wife and I will be taking trains from Rome to Florence to Naples and back to Rome later this year. Train travel has changed a bit since I last rode FS in 1980!
You said ‘1980’. LOL, 1979 was the last time I took an Italian train. My memories are a ‘slightly’ less pleasant experience than mentioned in the comments. 🚂 😂
i did salerno to milano centrale then milano to zurich, it was a great experience and i would recommend any young person to do it. My train delayed 45 min, but it wasnt a problem because they just told me: "Take the next train with the same ticket", Frecciarossa is fire!🔥🔥
When booking online via Trenitalia what confused me was it was saying I hadn’t chosen a “solution” and wouldn’t let me proceed. After a lot of head scratching I realised “solution “ meant I had to pick a train service eg: Regional 😊. Also tickets are now automatically validated for the train you have booked on but can be changed up to a certain time before travel. Hope this helps.
However, the maximum speed of the Frecciarossa1000 (which it can reach on that route, because otherwise it would be over 400 km/h (248 mph), but the infrastructure does not yet allow it) is 300 km/h (186 mph).
Technically they can go up to 350 km/h on the Bologna-Milano line but it was decided to limit the speed to 300 km/h as it would significantly increase maintenance costs for a slight gain in speed
I'm taking a spur of the moment trip to Italy because my plans to go to Paris are on hold due to the strikes. I have never been to Italy and this video is so helpful. I feel so much better after watching it. Thank you. Thank you!
From Paris you can take the FRECCIAROSSA High-Speed train from Paris Gare de Lyon to TORINO or MILANO Central Station (it takes around 5-6 hours). From both TORINO and MILANO you can then take other high speed trains throughout the country
Just got back from Europe specifically Italy. Thanks to your channel. I was able to survive the train ride...ha ha ha. Would be easier next time I go back there. Roma Termini is soooo busy and huge, but was able to find the platform # easily. Other train stations are easy to navigate! Trenitalia app is easy. I also tried to use the Biglettia machine with ease on some stations too. So, quite an experience for someone who's not familiar with European train system because we usually don't use train in the USA. Your video helped me. I watched it a few times before I embark on my trip. It's a great help and saver!
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm thrilled to hear that my video was able to help you on your trip. It means a lot to me that I could make a difference. Safe travels and hope you have more amazing adventures in the future!
I travelled by Train from Venezia to Bologna and was not fun, but tiring, we had 3 suitcases and disembarked from a cruise ship. At the train terminal there was no cart or porter! we asked people at customer service and they were not helpful! They had a very small elevator we could hardly fit in with our suit cases, and we lined up and waited 25 minutes to get our turn. It was like a joke! Finding a cab is another issue, and you have to wait pretty long!
Suggest you explain “buy train tickets early”. For best value (maybe 1/2 price) buy weeks ahead - not 1-2 days. 😐. Great video - you kept it moving with no wasted time (sometime several minute) of useless introduction.
Just a reminder..when you arrive by Leonardo Express, at the Fiumicino Airport station, you MUST show your ticket. I have have seen many tourists discard their tickets on the train, thinking they will no longer need it..then they are stopped trying to enter the airport. Keep your ticket. You need it to enter into the airport!
@@GregorBrown hi, I have a question please. I’m actually going to Rome tomorrow, arriving Tuesday 3/28. My question is about taking that Leonardo express to Termini. Should I buy a ticket online now?? Or wait to get it after I arrive and clear customs?? I’m unclear if that’s the ticket that’s for specific train time, or if it’s open for a couple of hours for example, since I don’t know when exactly we’ll be ready to board it. And are those tickets a must to be validated at those green and white machines? Or do Leonardo Express tickets don’t need to be validated? And if you don’t have a paper ticket, only online code, how do you validate that?? Or would you take the bus from Fiumicino to Termini, if it’s much cheaper?? Thanks! :)
@@GregorBrown I’m adding my response to my own questions above, since I just traveled there and came back today. I highly recommend just using the Express train from and to airport (going to Termini station). No way would I waste time or risk any delay by using a bus. Ticket doesn’t have specific time on it just the date and you must validate it in the green/white box before entering the train. No need to buy ahead, there’s lots of machines to buy from (or ticket office with a person in it), and it’s super easy and you can use cash or card. Ticket stub was not needed to enter the airport at all. All the little doors had green arrows and opened automatically when you got near them.
@cathyras1714 would you be able to answer my question- when you buy a ticket ahead of time, what’s the best way to have a hard copy? Do you just need the app, or do you need to go to the kiosk before boarding to get a physical copy? Thanks so much if you have a chance to reply!
@@arielfarrar5353 I just came back from Italy and if you have a ticket in the app or a screenshot, you don’t need a hard copy. They are able to scan off your phone just fine. You only get a hard copy if you buy it at the machine and it prints it out (and a teller too, I’m sure, but I used a machine).
Appreciated,Very informative and amazing blogs video ,,I really like it the way is exposed the beauty of train , surrounding and in a very simple communication way. Very Good
Excellent video! Makes me want to go back to Italy even more. The trains are awesome! For local route tickets, don’t forget to validate them using the yellow machines. This is typically done already when you pre-purchase online. In the past, I’ve also gotten a four-hour window in which to use the ticket. So if you need extra time, you may be able to take the next one
If you by tickets online through the official website or app you don’t need to validate them before departure. The ticket is valid for the next four hours starting from the scheduled departure of the train, so if you miss one you can take the next.
Great review, the only thing I would add is bring as little luggage as possible. The fast trains in particular have steep and narrow steps up from platform and juggling large suitcases can be difficult.
Thank you on this video since I'm planning going to Naples :D Ps. It's common thing to serve beverages and coffee in better trains, even in Serbia (at least in train that goes up to 200km/h. And it's cheap ticket is like 4€). If you have time come to Belgrade (you have cheap wizz air flights from 15€, from Rome to Belgrade).
Oh my gosh! Soooo helpful. Thank you for the app/website to order tix head of time! I'm super excited but anxious about my trip to Italia next month. Flyiing into Rome and going straight to Sorrento from the airport. Thank you Thank you!!
Your excitement for Italy is absolutely understandable - it's a beautiful country with so much to offer. Rome to Sorrento is a fantastic journey. Wishing you a wonderful trip filled with amazing experiences! Grazie and safe travels! 🇮🇹✈️🚆

Thanks for showing Florence's station, a masterpiece of rationalist architecture from the 1930s, designed by Giovanni Michelucci, one of the greatest modern Italian architects.
You can present everything and people would buy it,cause you can,you know how ….such a good quality of your video again, you are a professional👍…greetings from slovakia🇸🇰tom
Well done - just about all the critical info clearly presented in a few minutes. I probably studied Rick Steves for an hour to learn as much, back in 2000, when ticket machines were considered cutting edge tech and nobody had smartphones.
Yea well learn a little Italian so that you can show the people a some respect. I know as an American our language doesn't matter to the hoards that invade it everyday, but in Italian knowing a few words, and sentences go a long way in the locals in helping you order a meal, find the bathroom get on the right train etc. Enjoy your trip Italy is by far the greatest place my wife and I have ever visited. Oh and if you want some great pastry the pasticceria pastry shop in Italian right behind the station in Florence is beyond great, arrivederci.
As an italian I can tell you that the high-speed line it’s the better way to move around major cities: it’s fast, way more flexible hours than the plane (there are around 10 journey every day across major cities), no issues with the luggage (no weight, size or unit limits) and you can easily reach the city center of every city. TIP: mind to book them early (at least 20-30 days earlier, the earlier the better) to get bargain prices. If you buy tickets couple days before the price will be significantly higher (from 29€ if booked 20 days earlier to 120€ if booked couple days earlier) Welcome and enjoy ITALY 🇮🇹

Also, DON’T put a small bag, like a purse, sling bag or fanny pack, in the overhead rack, even in first class. Keep it in your lap and out the big bag up top.
Good man , gregor . Traveling is amazing when possible!
It really is! Every trip is a new adventure waiting to be discovered. 🌍✈️
so travelling with train is a must in Italy, can't wait to travel oneee
you will love it!
@@GregorBrown which one you prefer italo or treneitalia?
Trenitalia, more options for train times.
Thank you 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
Rode Italian trains in Sicily and from Rome to Bologna and back. WONDERFUL experience. No issues. Bought the tickets from the person behind the desk, not the machines, as it was my first time.
Naples is two stations in one. If you're confused af by your tkt, go into the basement. You're train is down there.
Bello che qualcuno sponsorizzi l'Italia. È interessante come uno straniero sia curioso riguardo al nostro sistema. Purtroppo va detto che Trenitalia non è il massimo, ma Italo e il Frecciarossa penso che siano il top
grazie!
the high speed Freeciarossa was a highlight of our trip! great ride and views of the italian countryside, recccomend paying more for Business class.
This is so well presented. 100% confirmed
Thanks for the positive vibes and sharing them here! 😎👍
Good advices! Funny about the last minute change of platform, it is really true! About the app, it works really well, you can check when the train you are expecting is coming, that way you can stop running in a change.
Thanks for sharing!!
I want to know if these apps provided by the train company tell you when your train is coming so that you don't have to be looking up at a board constantly (and also if they'll alert you to changes in train platforms.)
@@Neville60001 Once you know your train number (from your ticket), you can follow it up from the app, tha app tells you where it is at any moment, what platform it is arriving, the app is very intuitive, you'll find the info quickly.
so helpful, thanks!!
Glad it was helpful!
Took the Tranitalia bullet train from Paris to Milan. Great trip. Excellent service.
Happy to hear!
yes! and with the discounts for rail trips, perfect!
Sadly now it has to pass very slowly on an old track but they are building a crazy 57 km train tunnel under the alps
Well done concise presentation on trains in Italy. Thank u.
Glad you liked it!
Super informative. No extra irritating talk either!
I appreciate that! Glad you liked it!
Being a local from italy this is normal for me by going to school everyday. But you are like a crash course for italian train stations
Lovef travel by trains in Italy fun fun
yeah, it can me fun!
Nice informative video, from an Italian standpoint you nailed every point!
Glad you liked it!
This was honestly very very helpful & clear to understand!👌🏽

North europe station not clears ,because?
Well done and cheers, first time I trained around Europe was early 90's went back for 9 weeks in 17 train again,
Now my kids have grown up and can pay there own way there coming this time, May, June Yeeah Baby.
sounds like an epic family adventure awaits! Enjoy Europe. 🚂🌍
Great video, loved the clear and direct information, thanks looking forward for the next video......
thanks. I made another one on local trains too: ua-cam.com/video/lC_rosmjNW0/v-deo.html
Thanks a Lot for making such detailed videos.. we love it.
U saved me 😅
That's awesome and I'm glad I was able to help at the last minute
Helpful, understandable, informtive, great film and narrative. Thank you veru much. Grazie.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video, as an italian i can say this is a very complete guide
Glad to hear that!

Ok, thank you. Glad to have you along and watching the videos. Thanks for the positive vibes.
Great video Gregor. Very informative and well crafted.
Thank you kindly!
Thanks so much, great tips. Were traveling by train throughout Italy this summer.
Glad it was helpful!
That's a great idea! thanks for the tips
I'm glad I just discovered this video, as my wife and I will be taking trains from Rome to Florence to Naples and back to Rome later this year. Train travel has changed a bit since I last rode FS in 1980!
Have fun! thanks for watching!
You said ‘1980’. LOL, 1979 was the last time I took an Italian train. My memories are a ‘slightly’ less pleasant experience than mentioned in the comments. 🚂 😂
@@lesf5792 Unless my memory is not clear, there were wooden bench seats in 2nd class from Rome to Naples!
@@charlesbaran1106 lol. I took the train to Brindisi. It was God AWEFUL 🤪
I'm planning the exact same thing for next year. I'm exited about it. Already checking things out.
We used the Omio app when we were in Italy a few months ago. Worked great and I think it was cheaper. Works with any European trains.
thanks for the advice!! and sharing with the community.
This video was so helpful. Thanks for making it 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Hello, thank you for sharing an interesting tour, great video, useful and beautiful, friendly like, good luck and have a good week,😍😍🤗🤗😉😉
Thank you too
i did salerno to milano centrale then milano to zurich, it was a great experience and i would recommend any young person to do it.
However, the maximum speed of the Frecciarossa1000 (which it can reach on that route, because otherwise it would be over 400 km/h (248 mph), but the infrastructure does not yet allow it) is 300 km/h (186 mph).
wow, thanks for sharing
Technically they can go up to 350 km/h on the Bologna-Milano line but it was decided to limit the speed to 300 km/h as it would significantly increase maintenance costs for a slight gain in speed
technically in tests 392Km/h was reached, simply RFI don't want this speed because it will scratch the railway to fast increasing maintenance costs!

I'm taking a spur of the moment trip to Italy because my plans to go to Paris are on hold due to the strikes. I have never been to Italy and this video is so helpful. I feel so much better after watching it. Thank you. Thank you!
THANK YOU for the support. 😎❤️😊 I'm glad this video helped and yeah, you're going to love it.
How was it? Did you like your trip to Italy?
From Paris you can take the FRECCIAROSSA High-Speed train from Paris Gare de Lyon to TORINO or MILANO Central Station (it takes around 5-6 hours). From both TORINO and MILANO you can then take other high speed trains throughout the country
How did your trip go?
Thanks Gregor I am from India this is avery useful video will be traveling to Italy next month❤watching this video many doubts have been cleared 😊
Have fun!
Got our trip tix based on your recommendations. So excited for our trip on July 21st! Grazie!
Hope you enjoy it!
Thanks for your video. Visiting Italy in August for the first time :)
Hope you enjoy it!
Quite an original way of presenting materials! Some passerby must have wondered why he bent down talking to the camera. 😀
Excellent video! I'll post it for our Expat group in Italy. They will enjoy it!
awesome, glad you liked it and thanks for doing so.
Thank you for your helpful travel information. Our first train travel in Italy, Florence to Venice in October
Thank you and I hope it was helpful
Great video perfectly explained!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for your tips. Very helpful.
You're welcome
Suggest you explain “buy train tickets early”. For best value (maybe 1/2 price) buy weeks ahead - not 1-2 days. 😐. Great video - you kept it moving with no wasted time (sometime several minute) of useless introduction.
Thanks, get alot helpful information. We're planning go to italy & using fast train next year
Just a reminder..when you arrive by Leonardo Express, at the Fiumicino Airport station, you MUST show your ticket. I have have seen many tourists discard their tickets on the train, thinking they will no longer need it..then they are stopped trying to enter the airport. Keep your ticket. You need it to enter into the airport!
Good advice. Keep your ticket. But they don't always check. I was just there coming from the airport Monday and they did not.
Great video, thank you!
Appreciated,Very informative and amazing blogs video ,,I really like it the way is exposed the beauty of train , surrounding and in a very simple communication way. Very Good
thanks for saying that, I appreciate your feedback and positivity!
Excellent video! Makes me want to go back to Italy even more. The trains are awesome!
For local route tickets, don’t forget to validate them using the yellow machines. This is typically done already when you pre-purchase online. In the past, I’ve also gotten a four-hour window in which to use the ticket. So if you need extra time, you may be able to take the next one
yes! yesterday I forgot to validate my ticket but as soon as I got on the train, I told the train worker. good advice!
Btw, most validators are now green and white
@@GregorBrown you were luck finding a decent sympatetic ticket controller
If you by tickets online through the official website or app you don’t need to validate them before departure. The ticket is valid for the next four hours starting from the scheduled departure of the train, so if you miss one you can take the next.
Great review, the only thing I would add is bring as little luggage as possible. The fast trains in particular have steep and narrow steps up from platform and juggling large suitcases can be difficult.
Traveling light makes navigating trains much easier, especially on Italy's fast trains. 🚄🧳🇮🇹
Thank you for all your info.
My pleasure!

Excellent video! My friend and I are going to Italy this year and we’re nervous about taking the trains. This was very helpful.

Thank you for planning to come and visit Italy, I hope you will be able to enjoy it!🤗
Yea well learn a little Italian so that you can show the people a some respect.
If you buy tickets couple days before the price will be significantly higher (from 29€ if booked 20 days earlier to 120€ if booked couple days earlier)
Welcome and enjoy ITALY 🇮🇹
