I completely concur with you. Having a break every 300km is a sensible thing to do. Why do people have range anxiety? Too much bad UA-camrs out there spreading miss-information. Great video. Really enjoyed it. Thank you.
Nice balanced review of driving long distance and the RWD version which all journo's ignore. I drove 515 miles recently from West of France to the Welsh valleys in 1 day. I used to do this in my ICE car regularly and the journey took 15 minutes longer, as I wanted a 80% charge on the ferry so my UK journey had just 1 stop of 10 mins so I'd arrive with 40% at my destination. As you said the last 20% is the slowest charge and the last 5% the slowest part of that. There is no way I'd recommend the LR verion over the RWD, the acceleration of the AWD gets old very quickly, and the RWD is more than sufficient in 99%of my needs. I did keep my max speed to 110kph so did economise a bit, but again that is the speeds I used to maintain what I did with that. Tesla superchargers kept the stops reasonable and not too expensive, and no queues at any of them.
You really didn't pay full credit to the efficiency of this car, it has a 60kwh (nominal) and 57.5kwh usable battery - you used 74.5% = 42.8kwh for 342.2km = 125wh/km, even taking out the benefit of elevation drop that's still 132wh/km at freeway speeds with the climate on. It's interesting that the trip meter estimated you should benefit 8.3% from elevation drop and you only benefitted 4.2% - wonder if that's to do with the FSD / Auto pilot.
Good point. I'll try cover efficiency better on the trip back. Definitely agree, Tesla have done a fantastic job with efficiency and the new model 3 takes it a big step further
Thanks for posting this. I'm tossing up between the long range and performance, it's hard to give up the safety-blanket of the extra 100km range which would be a nice buffer for certain trips. It's great to see how practical the 500km rated range still is though going between cities no worries. EDIT: Also just a heads up I found it a bit hard to hear the final thoughts section as the audio was a bit quiet. Otherwise great and informative video!
Thanks mate, yeah need to invest in better equipment at some point. LR is pretty quick but Perf would be insane! Depends also where you are going. If it's all east coast then you really don't need the extra range. Either way you'll love it!
Yeah, glad to hear someone willing to take breaks! So used to getting comments from ICE drivers who think driving 6 or 7 hours straight is safe. I find around the 2-3 hour mark is good, especially with autopilot as it takes so much of the fatigue out of the drive. Key is to do what is comfortable and safe though.
The 350kW tritium chargers are amp limited on a Tesla, you will only get around 130kW max on a Tesla. (Need a higher voltage car to get more, from memory they are 350A and you would need a theoretical 1000V car to achieve 350kW). In your case though you would have been battery limited by the Tesla due to the high state of charge.
Awesome video, thank you (and your camera person!) very much for making it. Lots of very useful real world information. That ultra red really pops too (almost as good looking as stealth gray!) Safe travels !
That hasn’t been my experience. I’ve charged at Evie and Chargefox 350 kW stations before and maxed out at 180 kW, not 130 kW. It depends on your starting state of charge (the lower the SoC the higher the initial charge rate will be) and whether the battery has been preconditioned. Recently Tesla added third party charging stations to their navigation and if you use that to navigate to a station the battery will now be preconditioned.
@@beforetheinternet Your right. I misremembered the specs of the tritium chargers. They are capable of 500amps. Which aligns with 180kW for a 360V nominal voltage, which sounds about right for a Tesla battery at a lower state of charge.
@@recursion. Misleading? you can get roof racks on a Tesla, it's just a thumbnail chill have you not seen a thumbnail on UA-cam before? you must be real fun at parties
Interesting take, I get the take that you don't want to spend the money on EAP if you don't see the value. It does everything AP does plus gives you the automatic lane changes so it's better than AP, but I definitely wouldn't have got it on it's own. I chose to go full FSD as I know a bit about what is going on with testing here and see some future value there (it's a pure gamble though). Definitely wouldn't call it garbage, value for money is definitely up for debate. I'm definitely happy I had it on a trip like that.
@@Tesla-Red I got FSD with my last Tesla a couple of years ago but had to sell for life reasons. Personally I feel like I got pretty burned by FSD, paying a premium and not getting to use any of the actual FSD features for the whole time I used the car then not being able to transfer it. I really hope they get the new FSD working in Australia because that would make me actually consider buying it again but for my next Tesla I'm not buying it until I can use it.
@@jful Yeah, that sucks, I do think they should make it transferable for those that purchased it outright. Particularly here where it is taking longer to get the latest versions.
@@Tesla-Red I found the automatic lane changes annoying. I eventually turned them off. The lane change manoeuvre itself is also quite jarring. Autopilot can already be a bit hit or miss with phantom breaking, weird acceleration when the highway is stop\go. Worrying about unnecessary automatic lane changes was just a step too far.
Thanks. Great video. After watching this when I do get a Tesla it will have to be the red one. Looks so nice

Great video. Nice to have real life experience of using teslas for long trips.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!

Hi!
Hopefully I will get my car next week RWD ultra red. Ireland 🇮🇪

You picked the right colour too!
too much noise comes inside on raod ! is that road, tyre noise ?
Remember it's just a mobile phone camera, the cabin is extremely quiet.
curious, why does the video picture have luggage on the roof?
Just a little joke/ throwback to the old school road trips
