Sohla: "Was there Mac & Cheese in the 18th Century?" Me, who knows that Thomas Jefferson loved it so much that he imported it from France in quantities that almost caused a shortage: "Probably, I'm not sure."

The sad longer version was he sent his enslaved hostage, James Hemings, who was also his wife’s half brother to France to be trained as a chef. Finally Sohla's talent is getting showcased on camera. She was my favorite chef back at BA's channel and I'm so glad she seems to be doing great! She really deserves it and I hope more success comes her way.
One of my favorite things about this series is it positions a brown women as an expert, who is so good at her craft normal cooking is too Easy, So she has to be challenged. This is especially wonderful considering how she got to the BCU. More brown lady experts!
@@yukononun well yeah obviously she is, I don’t think they were trying to come off like they only saw her for her colour. But you can’t really ignore the reason she was mistreated in BA was likely due to her colour, since she is inarguably incredibly talented at her craft and deserves recognition. I think maybe the commenter was trying to acknowledge all of that, and sort of celebrate something that isn’t seen in western media as often as it should be, which is a brown woman actually being given the chance to show how skilled and talented and wonderful she is without it being like a “token” or something. She’s the main focus of this show, it’s all about what she can do, whereas on BA she was often swept to the sidelines and kind of ignored. Now she’s able to shine, and it must be nice for other brown women to see her succeeding, so I don’t see how it’s wrong to call attention to that since it is a lovely thing. Yes, everybody is more than just their race, but it’s still a big part of most people’s identity, and it undeniably can mean people aren’t treated as fairly as they should be just because of their colour. So it’s nice to be able to see Sohla, a brown woman who has been treated unfairly before, getting the chance to shine. But like I’m a white girl from Scotland so I’m just guessing, so please anybody who has more authority than me to speak on this chime in so there will actually be a meaningful perspective instead of my outsiders opinion hahaha
Seth DeMasi no way, they actually said she wasn’t marketable? That was the Bona fide reason? Literally every video the comments demanded her to have her own show
I cannot express how happy it makes me to see Sohla with her own show, she has such a big personality and I'm glad she's gotten this opportunity to show it off!
Might just entail Sohla dressing like a goth, not smiling or laughing at anything, being super pessimistic, and even if it turns out great, she ends the episode with "I don't care, everything sucks/I'm dead inside".
"People just ate all the cheese they wanted to eat and then they died." Never before have I been more jealous of an 18th century person. Also so good to see Sohla.
I’m happy to see more of Solah’s personality with this production staff. Solah has a shining personality, it was a great pitch to center a show around her!
She did some videos with the New York Times Cooking channel but it lacked any heart, the direction did not take advantage of her personality nearly as much as this video.
BA Fans, Pre Blow-Up: I’d love a series that lets Sohla use all that weird creativity she’s clearly exploding with and do some really off the wall stuff. BA: or, hear me out, we don’t and also act like she isn’t one of the most valuable and creative people we’re fortunate enough to work with Babish: well, if you don’t want that gold mine, I think I know where I’ll start digging... Honestly so glad that my dream series with my favorite chefs are coming together in a way that isn’t as douchey and exploitative. Love this and love y’all.
Kaespaetzle are still a thing, e.g. in Swabia in Germany: Spaetzle and tons of cheese, some fried onions on top...heaven. (Lots of others probably mentioned this already.)
Same! I was thinking she was gonna do a bunch of internet research on what was around in the 1800s and what she'd be able to use. But then she said she was gonna read some books and I got even more curious about her methodology. Like, was it a figure of speech or does she really have books on 18th century cooking just at the ready??
I love this! I wouldn't mind a slightly longer format to allow Sohla to walk us through what she is doing a bit more. Your usual videos have a perfect balance of entertainment and education that I think would fit so nicely in the new series! Can't wait to catch the next episode.
3:18 the absurdity of Sohla starting a fire by banging two rocks together over some twigs while an apple watch is on her arm perfectly encapsulates 2020
That was adorable. In her defense she was almost there. Just had to swap out one of the flint rocks for a piece of metal. Oh and line the pit to prevent those pesky explosions.
@@twospooky A fire after any sort of rain runs the risk. It's why if you make a fire in the wild, you never want to use rocks from a riverbed, as they have a tendency to explode.

Alexander and Alex, I was just referring to the "Fine, I'll do it myself" bit. Musk is all about power moves. I know they're not comparable personalities, generally.
Pretty entertaining. But I I found a lot of factual discrepancies in the video. She says corduroy didn't exist in the 18th century. I looked it up. Has been around since... Ancient Egypt! She says stoves didn't exist in the 18th century, I looked it up and stoves were invented in the 15th century and were mass produced and available in the 18th century. Also she says she's never started a fire, then proceeds to talk about how she used to start fires in holes as a child.
@@szymonmatyjaszek1440 she said they didnt have induction burners, not that they didnt have stoves. She said she's never built a fire, which is completely different than just starting a fire. Corduroy, at best, was invented in the 18th century, in England(it comes from the words cord and duroy), the predecessor of corduroy, fustian fabric, comes from at least the 1500's.
@@szymonmatyjaszek1440 also, the first thing we would even recognize as a stove was invented in 1735, however the first stove considered a range was invented in 1790. Though what could be called stoves have existed since at least 221 BCE.

Finally Sohla's talent is getting showcased on camera. She was my favorite chef back at BA's channel and I'm so glad she seems to be doing great! She really deserves it and I hope more success comes her way.
I thought the same thing!
One of my favorite things about this series is it positions a brown women as an expert, who is so good at her craft normal cooking is too Easy, So she has to be challenged. This is especially wonderful considering how she got to the BCU. More brown lady experts!
Wack
I'm pretty sure that she's more than her colour. She's an expert because of her skills and personality, not her race.
Cringe.

Literally me
ba: doesn’t give sohla a show
babish: immediately gives sohla a show
Moral of the story: bish is good
According to BA, sohla somehow wasn’t marketable. The 1.6 million views on this vid says otherwise lmao, good for sohla
@@Sethdemasi Everyone loved sohla BA was very foolish
Seth DeMasi no way, they actually said she wasn’t marketable? That was the Bona fide reason? Literally every video the comments demanded her to have her own show
I cannot express how happy it makes me to see Sohla with her own show, she has such a big personality and I'm glad she's gotten this opportunity to show it off!
Wth is “make it sad” on the wheel xD
Might just entail Sohla dressing like a goth, not smiling or laughing at anything, being super pessimistic, and even if it turns out great, she ends the episode with "I don't care, everything sucks/I'm dead inside".
Gives me a massive throwback to the bubble bass burger from binging where make it cry was just adding onions. Maybe? I don't know

I’m happy to see more of Solah’s personality with this production staff. Solah has a shining personality, it was a great pitch to center a show around her!
She did some videos with the New York Times Cooking channel but it lacked any heart, the direction did not take advantage of her personality nearly as much as this video.

Tbh the way they imploded was extraordinary. Totally showed other companies that power is truly in its people
BA Fans, Pre Blow-Up: I’d love a series that lets Sohla use all that weird creativity she’s clearly exploding with and do some really off the wall stuff.
BA: or, hear me out, we don’t and also act like she isn’t one of the most valuable and creative people we’re fortunate enough to work with
Babish: well, if you don’t want that gold mine, I think I know where I’ll start digging...
Honestly so glad that my dream series with my favorite chefs are coming together in a way that isn’t as douchey and exploitative. Love this and love y’all.
I know! When she did the dessert carbonara I was like can we have an entire series of her just exploring stuff like this?????
The really if a gold mine! I love this!
Missed chance to say "off the Waylly stuff"

100% agree - the bon appetit explosion kinda exposed a lot of shit in the industry which hopefully leads to more good stuff like this
Kaespaetzle are still a thing, e.g. in Swabia in Germany: Spaetzle and tons of cheese, some fried onions on top...heaven. (Lots of others probably mentioned this already.)
Also, I would actually love to see some portion of the research that Sohla might do, and/or more of her thought process.
Yes!
I second this!
Do we really want to know how to make this tho... Let's be real

Sohla: "I've never built a fire before"
Also Sohla: *HEATS CONCRETE TO EXPLOSION TEMPS*
dosnt take much depending how you mix it concrete is kind of a sponge
When concrete is heated, water inside the concrete evaporates and cannot exit, thus making the concrete explode, this is commonly known as spalling.
Was the firepit made with the wrong kind of bricks or something then?
TwoSpooky it was probably just too much water in the concrete
@@twospooky A fire after any sort of rain runs the risk. It's why if you make a fire in the wild, you never want to use rocks from a riverbed, as they have a tendency to explode.

Well this feels weirdly satisfying and entertaining. With all the chaos flying around. Congrats Sohla on your new show! Been a fan for so long.
