Sohla's comment on tasting menus: "it cost $600 and I got so drunk and angry. We got In and Out afterward," absolutely nails the tasting menu experience.
They always made her look like an assistant when she actually has more experience than the people she was assisting... lol what did you expect was going to happen? Glad she still on UA-cam for us tho.
I never realized that but that is true. She was always only in the background and was only brought to help with small tasks like chopping vegetables or tempering something
i realized this after the carbonara episode, where everyone wanted her to have her own show because of how talented and wholesome she is, but unfortunately, she was taken for granted.
This woman is a creative genius. The fact that she went so long being completely under-appreciated and undervalued at BA is just infuriating. Sohla is just the best!
@UCZ3oQLqrXDMQGccQ9MgS6sw She was paid $50k as an assistant editor to aid less experienced staff when she had more real world high level restaurant experience than basically every other chef in that kitchen. She was vastly underpaid, underutilized, and her hire date has nothing to do with that.
Henry Ettoit hes been growing this channel for over 5 years, was filming and editing all his stuff by himself for a good part of that, found a creative niche that helped him rise in popularity, and now another chef whos appeared on here twice should take over his channel because shes a woman and a poc?
I knew Sohla was all that when she did a deconstructed and sweet-ish version of ....was it carbonara? I can't remember exactly. She foamed something. And she candied another part. And everyone else was like "you f*cking showed me up". And she did. By miles and years.
I love how this shows both that Andrew is literally just a guy who loves food (and does extensive research and puts a lot of care into his videos) without real training and how extremely knowledgable and talented Sohla is
For real, actual professionals like Sohla are mad intimidating to me cause while we're technically doing the same thing, they operate on a higher level of skill and knowledge.
The only time they let her was the "experimental pasta carbonara" where she hit it out of the park compared to the other two. That's when I knew they weren't using her to her full potential. I have great hopes for this series!
For real like she clearly was one of the most talented people at ba, but still underpaid and under covered her. Dope to see her have her own show on another relatively large channel.

She sounds like a mad woman speaking ridiculousness until it comes together and you realize that she's a genius and I'm just not big brain enough for her.
I have enjoyed the binging with Babish episodes for a while, but now that Sohla is part of the channel I finally subscribed. I think it’s going to allow an even broader range of episodes, and I’m so happy to see her end up someplace where she can be appreciated for her knowledge and experience
I love how this show is so silly, but in the most natural way. It doesn't feel forced at all, like it does with s lot of similar shows. Sohla is so in her element here and it's really enjoyable to watch!
This is quite the coup by Babish, right? I’m impressed he saw an opportunity to get an amazing talent in sohla, and was willing to change his whole channel to do it. Although, I guess it was common sense too. Everybody knew that Sohla would be great where ever she ended up lol. Well done to both of them
Ironically, I’ve seen more of his face in this video than in most of his own videos. A man who spent years not showing his own face goes into the business of showcasing other people’s talents and personalities, and we see more of the man in the process.
Sohla creating and recreating dishes like a mad scientist in an apron is such a pleasure to watch. She’s crazy talented and I’m still upset with how BA downplayed how good she is. Looking forward to seeing greater things from you Sohla!
After having enjoyed many shows on BA for years, I was very upset to find out that a lot of my favourite people weren't happy there. Seeing Sohla happy in a new job, with a new show I actually enjoy (a LOOOOOOT!!!!) makes me soooo happy :)
Watching this, I'm getting legit teary-eyed at how happy I am Sohla is finally somewhere she can shine. I blame BA for sticking her in the background cast and never giving the world a chance to see how wonderfully talented, skilled, creative, AND educated she is!
@UCkZZqeofc-_N52Fgiq06aaQ so what your saying is that Sohla being pigeonholed into a supporting role on a show with a majority white lead cast by an editor who is now known to have done blackface is completely irrelevant. Stay fragile, white guy.
I love that Sohla is doing high-concept, personality-driven content on this channel and absolutely crushing it. That's what all of BA's most successful series were, so it just goes to show how unappreciated and underutilized she was (in addition to underpaid).
I really loved her interactions with the crew in this episode. Similar to the BA tone whilst still being distinct and unique. I feel like this show will be quite nice.
Just absolutely loved when Andrew said that he wasn't in a position of giving feedback to Sohla stating that she's a much more accomplished Chef. Loved it ❤️ lot of respect Babish
Andrew isn't a trained chef. I believe he's said his passion is actually film/TV and cooking is a "side" thing. Sohla, on the other hand, has been to culinary school.
I mean, it's not the first time he's done that. In the ricotta episode with Brad he said he's not a chef, the krabby patty contest with Alvin and Matty he said they were real chefs and he was a "jack-off with a camera", in a bunch of interviews he's dodged the title of "chef" etc.. He's a humble guy, he knows what he is and makes the most out of it.
@@Elandrianthetrue you're right! She has complete control on her dish because she knows how one or the other will interact. And! She's also curious and fearless in creating something new or trying something different. She's a very exciting cook to watch :)
Sohla is SUCH an incredible chef and she is so humble about it. She could have lorded it over Babish's head but instead she treats him as an equal. I love the friendship that you two have, it's truly heartwarming.
She's probably happy her talent & experience is finally being acknowledged, he made a point to refer to her skill several times. It's basic respect, something BA couldn't manage yet it goes such a long way. Even the fact the series is based on trying to stump her sends a clear message, that Babish knows she is up to crazy challenges because she's so knowledgeable & talented.

she so wholesome and great, what happened in bon appitite is a shame, which sucks both that the cast was cool (emile was my fav) and sohla brought the wholesomeness to it
@@chlorhex6785 I don't see it as bland, as much as she isn't used to performing for a camera. It's something that can only be solved with time, and she hasn't had too many opportunities to be the focus of a UA-cam video. In contrast, Claire has been starring regularly in BA videos for at least 5 years, Brad has had his own show for 3-4 years, Molly has been creating online content for nearly 6 years, and Babish has done nearly 200 videos in the past 4 years. Sohla also just seems chill and less performative, which IMO is pleasant to watch.
The amount of food theory mixed with technical knowledge to make such silly food possible requires an insane amount of talent. sohla is a god among men

I wonder if Sohla would have fewer headaches and breakdowns if she were to do a Gourmet Make... I love Clare - but it seems like Sohla has a lot more tricks up her sleeves. What do you think?
@@LilianaKali At the very least we know Sohla can effectively temper chocolate while Claire has a really hard time doing it. Still, there's something to be said about specific skill. Claire is a chef who can tackle savoury food from time to time (see her BBQ ribs) but her main skill is baking and sweets. I can't say Sohla has an upper hand on those specific grounds because we haven't had an opportunity to judge them accordingly. Sohla cooks general courses. Claire bakes pastries. It's in this situation that I can truly contemplate how great Sohla is as a chef. I was reluctant to watch this episode at first because "lower tier ingredients", But Sohla blew my mind.
loved this! a suggestion: when sohla breaks out a crazy chef-y technical term, could we get a definition on the screen? I don't know how to spell half the stuff to google it myself :)
The element I love the most about "stump sohla" is the fact that her creativity is let out wild! which we saw on BA where she was being a bit more limited to "doable" recipes but here she is going all out and creating amazing stuff. GENIUS! Go SOHLA!!!
We caught a glimpse of that a few times, like the video where they were doing carbonara and Sohla was like "dEsSERt CaRboNaRA!" and everyone was like "....okay, you do that."
We started to see it in that episode where they made three different types of Alfredo and she did some really cool and different cooking techniques and creative ideas

I hope they do it the next time and have some visual things going on. It’s gonna be more interesting to people who aren’t necessarily very into culinary arts
I don’t comment often but this is something my UA-cam feed has been missing. Really enjoyed the final tasting. Great banter. Really wish we could’ve gone to the bodega to hear some early game planning and puzzling through all the options. Keep it up.
I think it was more just feedback for the show as a whole. Show us the panning stage, doesn’t necessarily mean filming in places you can’t film, but more just the thought process behind it all.
This was such a treat, not only is Sohla the most precious person ever, but what.a.result! This gave me a new understanding of what a good chef can achieve by exploring ingredients rather than just making things generically "fancy". Man, did I love this!
I‘m impressed by how she seems totally in control but also in mad chaos all the time and I LOVE it. Sohla, I missed you a lot and I’m beyond happy to see you here, being appreciated, doing your thing and most important: being happy - well you seem like you are. :)
That's probably because she's really really experienced and knowledgeable. Chaos and control usually can't coexist for amateurs, regardless of the line of work.
That was one of the most pleasant viewing experiences I've had in a while (outside of the babish regulars). Sohla is a great addition, can't wait to see what else she brings to the table. I love seeing people just do fun stuff that they genuinely enjoy and sharing it with us. Thank you Babish for starting up the BCU, and thank you Sohla for deciding to mix in your exquisite talents. Also, the "this smells good" bit had me dying.
BA really messed up by making her just a background character. She could have had her own segment. Shame they not only disregarded her talent, but undercompensated her.
I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about this show. Mostly because I just love Babish so much and I wasn’t sure if I could become attached to a new show without him in the apron so to speak. But I’m surprisingly already hooked. Sohla is fun, bubbly, and very skilled. It’s very different from Babish’s show, but still has all of that charm. I’m very happy with Sohla in the Babish family.
same. i was so used to just binging with just Babish himself (Andrew) and was afraid she would ruin the channel, but hey, I'm glad to be proven wrong and enjoy her presence
This series is so chaotic but Sohla still manages to make great stuff with the challenges; I'm just incredibly charmed with her way of going through things.
From what you can find on the internet, it sounds like expectation creep, which happens in a lot of jobs. She was never contracted with the UA-cam channel portion of BA, but they brought her in to help people who were. Eventually she started appearing in videos, but still didn’t have a contract so wasn’t getting paid for that like people who were. I’ve experienced similar things in “normal” jobs - you’re good at computers, so you become unofficial IT. You know how to craft, so you’re assigned to decorate the office every holiday in addition to your normal job. You can handle pissed off customers better than anyone, so people let you handle someone who’s yelling if your manager isn’t there. Unfortunately, her situation resulted in much more lost money. I feel for her, and I know how one can feel like they can’t say “no”. If she asked for a contract and was denied, she should have stopped doing videos. If she never asked for a contract after she found out everyone else was being compensated more than she was, then she should have left. If she was then dismissed from her job, I feel like she could THEN have gone for blood. Obviously there’s a ton going on behind the scenes and it’s a tense atmosphere these days, but as someone who has been underutilized and underpaid in the past, I just left. No need to get revenge on the way out. That just looks petty.
This is such an amazing series, and I cannot wait to see more. Sohla is such a skilled chef, and she makes cooking so much fun to watch! The only thing I think could help the series in the future could be some text to supplement her planning and tell us a little more about what she's working on. Especially in an episode like this, where she is jumping between 7 different dishes, I had a few moments where I got confused or forgot what she was working on. It still kept me entranced the whole time, but could have used the tiniest bit more clarity. Overall, an amazing show, and I can't wait to see what other crazy challenges come from that wheel!
Yes. A suggestion. Instead of editing it in the order that she may have made each item, edit it in the order of the courses. The reason being: I got invested in specific courses from the jump. Keeping the organization set at the beginning of the video will reduce confusion when trying to watch the process.
As a former line cook i was ok following whatever order since thats how u do it professionally, but really, u make a well articulated point. Babish, this is a good point.
okay tbh, I wanna see a recipe book with this premise. Making actual meals just from snacks. I especially wanna know how she did the Ajo blanco, that just sounded real good.
It's so refreshing and it's so nice to see her looking happy. Knowing she was coerced and unpaid in the BA videos really makes them unwatchable for me now.
Fortunately it's rather early, and I have faith in Andrew to be able to figure this out. It's most likely due to the fact that he's filming different layouts with multiple people as opposed to his stationary layout for his solo show. But I'm just some guy on the internet what do I know?

I love seeing people just do fun stuff that they genuinely enjoy and sharing it with us. Thank you Babish for starting up the BCU, and thank you Sohla for deciding to mix in your exquisite talents. Also, the "this smells good" bit had me dying.
alternate tittle: Sohla abuses all blending kitchen equipment
Sohla is incredibly charming and I love that "mistakes" are included. It makes the video feel more authentic
BA really messed up by making her just a background character. She could have had her own segment. Shame they not only disregarded her talent, but undercompensated her.
i feel like Sohla should take over this channel. She is better in every way.
babish really just hired sohla to cook him the weirdest meals he can think of
Yep
C'mon, who wouldn't.
He saw desert carbonara and thought ‘I can do something with this’.
false.
And we are HERE for it
I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about this show. Mostly because I just love Babish so much and I wasn’t sure if I could become attached to a new show without him in the apron so to speak. But I’m surprisingly already hooked. Sohla is fun, bubbly, and very skilled. It’s very different from Babish’s show, but still has all of that charm. I’m very happy with Sohla in the Babish family.
i think his name is binging, but yes i agree
Surprised? Sohla is the GOAT. Clearly you haven’t seen her in action before LOL
Loren Napier well she didn’t exactly have much to work with over at BA tbf. This is already so much more interesting.
same. i was so used to just binging with just Babish himself (Andrew) and was afraid she would ruin the channel, but hey, I'm glad to be proven wrong and enjoy her presence
@@lorennapier1864 I've never seen her before but based on this video - she's great.
This series is so chaotic but Sohla still manages to make great stuff with the challenges; I'm just incredibly charmed with her way of going through things.
This is not only filling the HUGE BA shaped hole in my life it's totally beyond!! What were they thinking at BA? Talent squandered.
@@Lobsneaks She did ask and did leave. That's why she's here. If telling the truth is "getting revenge" and "being petty" to you, then so be it.
@@brycel4692 i don't think you read the commen properly
@@DreamItCraftIt I don't think you did.
@@VangaurdTDS exactly.
I second this. Great idea!
He probably wants to stay away from making these videos look similar to the Bon Apetit videos.
@@mtburr1089 Yeah, my first thought when I read this suggestion was 'so like how bon appetit does it?' Lol
The queen is back. And she's being paid
Yeah!!!🍕
@Akash Jacob youre actually right, Food Goddess
I can see why they didn't pay her as much, this video was only 60% as good as a usual babish vid
@@hedgemonkey6 stop
@@hedgemonkey6 Really? 😡
okay tbh, I wanna see a recipe book with this premise. Making actual meals just from snacks. I especially wanna know how she did the Ajo blanco, that just sounded real good.
Andrew's out here giving Sohla more love, praise and respect in a single video than BA ever did.
Love to see it
@@walmartshoes8955 Bon Apetit
It's so refreshing and it's so nice to see her looking happy. Knowing she was coerced and unpaid in the BA videos really makes them unwatchable for me now.
the sound mixing is a bit off, but overall loving the show so far. sohla is so hilarious!!
The dry twinkie processing absolutely gutted my ears. Jesus crust.
Fortunately it's rather early, and I have faith in Andrew to be able to figure this out. It's most likely due to the fact that he's filming different layouts with multiple people as opposed to his stationary layout for his solo show. But I'm just some guy on the internet what do I know?
and i feel like the colors are a bit off too. maybe it's just me tho..
@@anhariraushanfikri6089 The colour correction when Sohla wore the mustard shirt was definitely off, and her voice picked up better than his throughout. There's always a learning curve when starting a new endeavor.
Yeah, I normally listen at about 24 volume and I had to crank this up to 60 and then the Twinkie butter happened. RIP
Babish: hey I bet you can't make a tasting menu out of bodega food
Sohla: hold my ceramic chickens
If there were any comment awards, you would win all of them!
Sohla: "I'm not gonna stick my hand in there again cause I learned my lesson"
*5 seconds later*
Sohla: "I'm gonna stick my hand in there"
😂😂😂
The only time I had seen Sohla doing anything close to this when she was with BA was when she made the experimental carbonara and I’m so happy that I am able to see her do such things again!!!
That was the single best vid BA ever put out
