I remember when I was in my early 20's starting an informed CBT based on evolutionary psychology. The main premise of CBT is also the main premise of Stoicism. I started both at the same time and they blended together. For example, the main premise is that regardless of what the activating event is, the emotional disturbances/activations are controlled by how they are perceived to effect you. You cannot just change your mind however, you have to habitually through daily practice manually counter automatic emotions and thoughts with a change in perspective that nullifies emotional activation. Over time (it took me about 2 years), that part of the brain, those conectomes I guess, get a lot stronger where it no longer has 5o be manually countered in your head. You will have changed the door through which you experience the world... where before there was a filter that added anger, there is now no filter and events are experienced as they are and natural emotions like anger are null for most things, and transitory if occurred, and do not become articulated into words or habits. You become immune to being pulled by your emotions by for example the news. Tranquility. Seek it.

I always thought of stoicism as a really dispassionate approach to life and I’ve avoided it because it sounded depressing. But after this video and perhaps the timing of it as well, I see that it is very life changing way of thinking especially for anxious people. We do live in misery or happiness based on how we perceive things rather than how it is.

    • @btcpyr

lowercase stoicism is the personality trait of not showing or having any emotion (which is unhealthy if applied to all aspects of life). uppercase Stoicism is this philosophy which is a way of life. The founder of Stoicism, Zeno, taught this philosophy from the "Stoa Poikile"(which is greek for "Painted Porch"), which is how Stoicism got its name.

Stoicism, a subject near and dear to my heart. I see that it is very much in fashion these days, and one thing that I do want to add that many seem to gloss over is the emphasis on being a virtuous and good person. The ability to control your reactions, control your perceptions, and therefore be in control of your happiness is great; however, without the focus on being virtuous, we lose the benefits of Stoicism for our society.

That second quote hit home. One time I was feeling so frustrated that I couldn’t even think straight, I was hurt and angry and could process the situation. At that awful place I had an epiphany “wait, I’m incharge of my own emotions, so I can just choose to not care as much and calm down”
So I did. It was a thought that instantly took the weight of the world off my shoulders- I was fine and in control. I’m glad this is a thing, I thought I was a bit abnormal for bending my emotions to my will.

I'm a big fan of the Stoics. Since I discovered them, it has really enriched my life and given me the tools to handle life's ups and downs. That quotation from Viktor Frankl made me wonder if he was a Stoic, too! Lovely to meet Sam Ali. Be nice to hear more from him on some other occasion. I'll definitely subscribe to his channel and check out his content. It was also nice to see you having a good chat with a mate, rather than the deep dives you also do. For me it's also easier to be sure of watching when I only have to find 10-20 minutes, or even 30 minutes, out of my day. The longer deep dives are much harder to absorb and digest all in one go because of their length - even at 1.5 speed! ;-) Thanks again - always worth watching your content!

I always think about my parents and loved ones dying, and not from an emo, depressive way, but in a way more accepting impermenance kind of way !!! Entropy is real, everything we love will cease to exist, moments will pass, and whilst we might not have control over it, maybe we could learn to appreciate them a bit more when they happen, maybe hug tighter, maybe hold on a little stronger and accept how amazing this moment is but it can always come to an end

    Amazing video, Ali!😊✌
It's interesting to see this because Bhagvad Gita, the sacred hindu scripture states many of these ideas with a different verbatim but basically same essence and it predates the Greeks!!

Such a shame Ali doesn’t focus on religion right! Every single point in this video is taught to us in Islam!

Boti Bot yeah...but yet there is a considerable corpus of very questionable teachings, so much rather prefer Ali to stay away of religion altogether.

Hi, follow this channel for a while, and you guys are amazing! I was amazed how ambitious and self-discipline you can be, such as, no movie when there is no group activity. 😊It’s wonderful that ambitious smart people don’t go aggressive but pursue a gentle state of mind to understand and accept the world and self. A big fun of you, really enjoy it! Keen to learn more👍🤙
