“What we fear doing most is usually what we most need to do.” - Timothy Ferris This book is perfect for building systems for better productivity! Love it!
"Less is not laziness" That’s an idea I have had to get comfortable with. I remember reading this book 8 years ago and it was a new look at how to organize life and what matters. I'm going to read it again. Thank you for another great video.
I just read this book a month back and I still cannot grasp that this was written 14 years ago, before productivity UA-cam channels and blogs were even invented. Wow, this guy is revolutionary
I'm from the Philippines and I get that labor is cheaper here, but it would be more dignified and less offensive if people outside the country would pay more than $5 an hour (that's not even minimum wage here) so the ones they employ would have a higher quality of life. I was enjoying the video until I heard that one and had to say something- just food for thought.
@@johnpaulpunzalan8562 I'm a freelancer and the entitlement of some (not all) employers from other countries demanding the same output they would pay a high amount for, from people here they're happy to pay pennies. Tbh he could have gone without saying the cost, and just say 'cheaper'. It's the tone and the laugh that make it so offensive.
@@Evraaah Exactly. What's worse is everyone else in this comment section doesn't seem to have a problem with it hahaha :( I know Ali probably didn't mean to offend, but it's disappointing really that he can explicitly say the words "take advantage" of the difference between the developing and developed world without batting an eye. Corporations already take advantage of this, but I'd hope that individuals who would benefit massively from the labor of someone from my country would have empathy to pay them what they deserve, not just what they can get away with.
I tried to read that book. It's awful. Disrespectful attitude and ignorant/arrogant approach just did not sit with me. Would not recommend. For what you highlighted too...
"People would rather be unhappy than uncertain" - I've been thinking about this a lot and I definitely agree. However, it is important to acknowledge the level of privilege that comes with choosing uncertainty over "unhappiness"(assuming it means being stuck in job that just pays the bills). Unhappiness can be tied to a more stable lifestyle- albeit mundane. But it sometimes means a roof over your head, being able to pay the bills, being able to feed your kids, and knowing that you will pull through in a medical emergency. "Risking it all and seeing what happens" doesn't always come from courage, but also safety nets, whether it be your parents, your savings...or your parents' savings. If you are starting from scratch and you have dependents (whether it be your parents like in the case of South Asian culture or your kids), uncertainty may often not be a choice. Saying that as a fresh college graduate with dependents. Anyway, just offering my perspective, otherwise great video Ali!
I thought exactly this when he was talking. Risking everything when you're 23 and don't own much, don't have dependents is very different from risking everything when you're 43, with a family and whole bunch of commitments that you can lose. Not impossible, but much, much riskier.
@@jackiedelvalle Exactly!! When you have a family and commitments, sometimes taking that risk doesn't mean you're the only one who has to deal with the consequences. If your dependents don't consent to the risk, it's unfair to go and take the risk anyway and have them deal with the consequences just because you wanted to.
I read this book 8 years ago and it completely changed my perspective on life, retirement and the concept of money and how to use it. Such a brilliant book!
I started reading this book and had a really deep and tearful conversation with my wife after only the first 3 chapters about how we wanted to approach our lives differently. It completely shook some of my foundational beliefs and got me to think about many things differently.
I don't believe in luck. It's not all about how you work hard, it's about how you manage your time, resources, mind to work together for a better output.
There _is_ luck, there is privilege (which one could argue is a form of luck at birth). It is possible though to acknowledge that reality AND still work hard and learn to manage resources efficiently. 🤷
I'm with you that time is the main asset! I love the way the book encourages creative thinking, and finding alternative ways to make things happen with less resources.
I was eagerly wanting to read this after the exams!! I learned a lot from you, I am a 5th year medical student from SYRIA, Thanks Ali you are my hero! Best wishes ❤️
I loved 4hour work week! Definitely found it hard to implement when I first read it but your vids have helped make it more simple. Your channel has helped me start my own documenting life in law school. Thanks Ali!
Haven’t read a book since school until I watched this video and decided to buy a copy. Now thoroughly enjoy reading each day and half way through. Thank you for the videos like this please keep them coming 👌
Can’t agree with you more, This book changed my life 4 years ago when I read it, it gave me the courage to dabble in a few different businesses to see what I liked and ultimately gave me the confidence to ask my company if I could work remotely when covid started and ended up moving out of state. I’ve now been working remote ever since and doing mini vacations more often than I could have when we lived in Alaska lol great review Ali!

I’ve been wanting to read this book, but wasn’t convinced about the “new rich” concept. Thanks for simplifying the ideas and elaborating on what he is trying to emphasize. Great summary 👍🏽
This book is bullshit. Apple, Tesla, Amazon, Walmart, Southwest, Skadden, The Beatles were not built off a Four-hour Work Week, those places or groups took massive amount of time and brain power to stay on course. Damn I really hated this book. Lazy ass Millennials. I’m a millennial myself and we always trying finding a shortcut for everything. Enough of that shit.
@@franciscocolin2008 lol bro you missed the point he's not talking about building the next Apple, Tesla, or Microsoft, if this is your goal then you might want to look for a different book, he's talking about having time and freedom to live your life while you're young and healthy and also have the money coming in from say a business or something to sustain yourself. I'm glad you're passionate and determined to work hard but you also have to think about for example someone like Steve Jobs right, built one of THE best companies in the world with a cult following and died of cancer at age 56? I mean extreme example here but just saying it's about living life not working for mills for the sake of it.
@@franciscocolin2008 Yeah you just straight up missed. Also the idea that millennials are “lazy” is just honestly stupid and actually be shown that that is just not true. But yeah, they weren’t built off of a 4 hour week. That’s kinda not the whole point of the book, it’s just a title. Also, are you trying to build the next Apple or Amazon? Like that has no relative importance
The new rich way of thinking is the way to live a productive, successful and probably less stressful, more flexible life. Building systems really is a game changer. Great video as always, Ali 🙌🏽
I literally have a UA-cam pvt playlist titled “Ali’s book recommendations” it has 18 videos in it. Please make more such videos, they are really helpful!
The quote you shared in the Define stage its absolutely life changing. I totally agree that "someday" is a disease that take our dreams. I started my Photoshop UA-cam channel also with the same fears you also described, "will it has positive or negative feedback", "will they understand my English, because I'm not so fluent". Yeah, whatever, let's do it and see how it goes. And like you said "Just do it and correct course along the way".
UA-cam recommended your video from 2018 on how to study better - I'm a university instructor and always looking for compelling videos to share with students. Then went down the rabbit hole watching other excellent and interesting videos, including the 9 passive income ideas. I'm trying to picture any US doctor going through medical school with the thought of "how can I get to a place where I can choose whether to be a doctor", given the crippling cost of medical school here. Definitely highlights the difference between our healthcare systems.
Ali! Long time watcher, first time commenter. Your thumbnail. 😂 The fact you put Twilight and Fifty Shades of Grey as possible books had me laughing! Thank you for putting in such great attention to detail!
At 7:15, Ali mentioned getting approached by a book publisher, now to coming to the present he creates New York Times Best seller "Feel-Good Productivity"

I think I’m in between deferrers and new rich! I was going to skip watching this one not sure why but I ended up watching it, it was rather insightful in the way we do things!
I am SHOOK that this is the book that most changed your life. While some of the concepts are decent, overall I thought it was overhyped, and his practical advice on how to accomplish the "new rich" lifestyle is already pretty much obsolete. But that is the beauty of books, something in it obviously resonated with you and triggered some powerful growth. On a side note, I inadvertently got someone fired because of this book. I think I may make a video about it because you and Daniel Inskeep both mentioned this in your videos in the last week and it would make for a pretty good video.
I’ve been meaning to acquire and really dig into this book instead of just religiously watching reviews lol 😅😅😅 thanks so much for this opinion piece and review, I will get this book!
My brother was a deferrer with retirement plans: having been a teenage hippy surfer, all that sun came back to bite him. Melanoma at 61 and dead of liver cancer at 65. There's some good advice in this video: live while you can.
You know honestly all this seems so hard to understand and people will just get bored and let it slide past(including me), but you know deep down I know this counts, for us becoming better people. Thanks Ali!
The fact that it took you 52 videos just to get a 1000 subscribers blows my mind! It also inspires me to never give up on my UA-cam channel, so thank you :)
I completely disagree with ignoring weaknesses. If you don't fix where you're weak, you will constantly be attacked there, or lose ground to those weaknesses. I am not sure why people fall for this book. The only people that praise this book are those who eventually ended up being rich. I smell confirmation bias. In reality, you need more than 4 hours a week to become successful. And do you really think that you just work 4 hours to produce content of this magnitude? Don't bulls**t us.
i think the point isn't to work 4 hours to begin with but develop a business so you only have to work 4 hours once it's thriving (obviously difficult in practice lol)
Why need a book when u have Ali abdaal the library 📚 The amount of work that goes through making these videos is lit af Thanks for all the work u do to make us knowledgeable🙏
*Don’t wait for the moment to be perfect to get started.* Take action daily toward your goal. Make daily progress. Such a great book - definitely worth re-reading many times! 💪🏻🔥
One important idea regarding setting goals (D for definition chapter) that you didn't mention: Tim describes how we should set ambitious and unreasonable goals - these, unlike "realistic" goals keep us interested and inspired, whereas average goals will equal an average effort from us. Average goals also mean the most fierce competition, because that's the level at which most people set goals and operate. It's a pretty good chapter (System Reset), I recommend everyone reading to pay attention to it.
I think a better way of saving time would be to buy prepped healthy ingredients, like cut and washed veggies, cooked meat, premixed protein shakes and stuff like that
A book that my 'before she was my wife' bought was "Who Moved My Cheese?". She got it for when I was trying to discover my passion in life. It turned out to be right in front of me.
I read this book on 2007-2008. I was working full time and taking doctoral classes but was trying to start a wine importing business. I could not take calls or make them while I was at work so This book gave me the idea to hire a VA service that took my calls and made some calls for me. That was helpful
Alex Soojung-Kim Pang‘s ‘Rest: Why You Get More Done When You Work Less’ speaks of similar to this book. I suggest everyone try the book. I found it helpful.

Why need a book when u have Ali abdaal the library 📚
The amount of work that goes through making these videos is lit af
Thanks for all the work u do to make us knowledgeable🙏
*Don’t wait for the moment to be perfect to get started.*
Take action daily toward your goal.
I’m surprised that there’s no PRODUCTIVE in the title
Watching Ali abdaal changed my life.
ordering a takeaway to save you time, is cutting years from your life in the long-term
I think he orders healthy food instead of all the standard takeaway.
@@hustlahhh1790 even healthy takeaways aren’t that healthy when you look at the ingredients that they put (sadly)
I think a better way of saving time would be to buy prepped healthy ingredients, like cut and washed veggies, cooked meat, premixed protein shakes and stuff like that
This changed my life too. I really took entrepreneurship seriously after this.
A book that my 'before she was my wife' bought was "Who Moved My Cheese?". She got it for when I was trying to discover my passion in life. It turned out to be right in front of me.
Sir, I recommend you atomic habits please try it once
@@IshaSharma11 OMG THAT'S AN AMAZING BOOK. i read it last month and it did change my life alot

Yes! Got this for Christmas after looking at it on bookshop shelves for years!
Some amazing points!!!
The book that made me cry the MOST: Harrison’s Internal Medicine Book
You are not alone bro. It's still making me cry
Thank you very much for mentioning this book Pokhraj. I didn't know about the author before.
Ali Abdaal is a total game changer. He is a life hack that has changed the way I perceive how to live a full life and meaningful life. Thanks Ali!

When you said time is more important, I soon stopped this video and went to do some useful😊
Ali you have created the best channel on UA-cam. I feel grateful that you are sharing such life changing content. I also love the 4 Hour Work Week and pretty much all of Tim Ferriss’ work 🤙🏻🤙🏻
Perfect suggestion 📚👌
I have learnt a lot from you Ali and now I am more productive than ever. Thanks for that.
Hey ali,
could you make a video about which podcasts you listen to or recommend?
This was super insightful, especially the unhappiness over uncertainty aspect! Thanks for sharing 💜
Ali is too busy with productivity, he even outsource his lovelife
I started speed watching / listening sincecoming across the idea in your videos. Thanks Ali!!
The sad thing is that these books are all focused on what I can get out of society rather than what I can do for society
You can do something for the society while happily gaining something from it
I just finished this book. Great book but needs correlation with your own personality.
NOTE: Almost all of the 'new rich' don't have kids
that's bang on, who's gonna marry this guy?
