My first time with UltraWide was NOT what I expected! - ASUS ProArt PA34VC

  • After many, MANY suggestions to give ultrawide monitors a try for my video production workflow, I finally gave in. I gave up my first time to the ASUS ProArt PA34VC - a 3440x1440 100hz IPS HDR (sorta) monitor that is both great for gaming and video editing.
But... maybe I won't replace my dual 4K monitor workflow with this one just yet... Let's talk about the differences between an ultra wide monitor vs normal 16:9 monitor when it comes to video production and screen casting.
This is my ASUS ProArt PA34VC Review

I've been using 3440x1440 for about 3 years and 4k for 2 years. If anyone's interested, I'll share my impressions too.
    # My Recent Monitor History:
    *2009* -- Triple 22"
*2010* -- Replaced center monitor with a 30" 16:9 in landscape; turned the two 22" flanking it into portrait.
*2017* -- 34" 3440x1440 replaced all of that. Not having a second monitor still made me itch.
*2018* -- 23" 2160p added to scratch that itch. Subsequently decided to build a dedicated gaming rig. 3440x1440 moved to the gaming rig and bought a second 4k for the workstation. In other words, ultrawide on the gaming rig and dual 23" 2160p (4k) monitors on the workstation.
*2019* -- 43" 2160p took the ultrawide's spot on the gaming rig. What to do with the ultrawide? I moved it back to the workstation in addition to the 2x 4k displays. So now it's dual 4k plus ultrawide on the workstation and a 43" 4k for the gaming rig.
    *Streaming/Recording*
For streaming or recording, I'd _emphatically_ suggest to anyone to stay at 16:9. The pixel scaling issues, and then the layout hassles aren't worth it. Whether you letterbox or crop, half of your audience will complain. I'd say go with 2160p if you can/want, but good old 1080p if you can't or don't care about that many pixels. 2160 --> 1080 is easy downscaling. 1440 --> 720 is another 2:1 step. At 1080p, your resolution won't be a reason you're not growing/retaining viewers. 720 might get you the occasional comment, but this channel has shown how it could actually improve your stream to do so. Either is plenty good, especially with the continuing shift to viewership in handheld screens. Ultrawide content creators definitely have more of a struggle. It's wonky on non-ultrawide displays and viewers click away.
    *I just wanna play, man*
For gaming with no regard for recording/streaming, it depends on what you play. I love the real estate of the 21:9 monitor for some games like MMOs where I can have some UI elements up but out of my way, or panoramic games, driving games, etc. Side scrollers are interesting on ultra-wide. However, for some older titles, they'll puke all over your screen if you try to play them. Skyrim for example, the UI gets very derpy to the point of unusable without some mods that replace the elements with ultrawide versions, but then those mods may not be compatible with other mods you might want. However, when I go back to 16:9 I really miss the panorama sometimes. I've done multi-monitor gaming in the past, starting with expensive hardware signal splitters and even with small bezels, it just isn't the same.
    *4K?*
As for 4k, I was very hyped when I got my first monitor. I'd heard all the amazing tales and I was so excited to bask in the glory. When I fired up a few games after plugging it in, my reaction was kinda "That's it?" Now, where I really noticed the pixel density made a huge difference for me when working with text. So much crisper and less eye fatigue. I immediately switched over to doing the bulk of my 'day job' work primarily on 4k and I've noticed a huge difference in how my eyes feel at the end of a day.
    *Large Format*
I had a 30" 16:9 at my desk at one point, but it was too big. Eye movement was way too excessive and lead to headaches and eye fatigue. If you can push back away from it, it's fine. That actually lead to where I'm at now with my gaming monitor. I'm using a 43" 2160p for gaming, but it's like 2 arms-lengths away from me. Last year, my wife and I set up side-by-side gaming stations with mini-recliners and 43" 4k monitors. We looked up THX guidelines for screen size to viewing distance, and at that scale, the 4k is worthwhile IMO for gaming or video/movies. It's been great, both from a gaming perspective and a relationship perspective.
    *Current Workstation*
The desk where my workstation is at is set up in an L-shape with two 27" 2160p monitors on one side and a 34" 3440x1440 on the other. I just can't make up my mind. My eyes love working on the higher pixel density of the 4k monitors, but there are some tasks that are just nicer to do on the wider screen. I can't quite bring myself to ditch the ultra-wide. If I could have a 21:9 with the pixel pitch/density of a 23" 4k monitor, that just might be my perfect monitor if I could have only one. I do find myself enjoying having at least one additional monitor though, even if it's just to throw up UA-cam of Netflix. If I could only have one monitor and I was stuck with a 16:9, I'd be very, very frustrated. Being stuck with one monitor at 21:9 is less painful than a single monitor at 16:9.
I'm not totally content with the display situation on my workstation. Having both the dual 4k side and the ultra-wide side feels wasteful and excessive and not particularly ergonomic. Frankly, it's a bit awkward to use. It's more like having two workstations where I have to rotate 90-degrees to use one or the other. The ultra-wide is just too wide to comfortable have flanking monitors like my old triple-monitor setup. They'd be usable for something like half-backgrounding some UA-cam videos while you work or throwing up some seldom-used monitoring software or something, but the eye and head movement wouldn't be nice for a long workday if it was something more actively used.
I'm toying with the idea of experimenting with a pair of 15.6" 1080p monitors in portrait (since they'll match the screen height of the 23") in a triple monitor config. I prefer having one main central monitor versus having to cock my head left or right for prolonged periods with a dual setup.
    *Recommendations:*
    * Streaming/recording: 16:9 @ 2160p if you wan/want; 1080p if you can't/don't.
    * For gaming and not streaming/recording: 3440x1440 accepting that some older titles may need to be played in windowed mode if available.
    * Only going to have one monitor: 3440x1440 and see if Asus MultiFrame, Display Fusion or similar will help.
    * For working with text: All other things being equal, a higher resolution on the same size screen will be much easier on the eyes (assuming the text is scaled so you aren't having to squint.)
For a dream dedicated editing station, I imagine you'd want maybe 4 monitors if you have room & budget.
    (1) 3440x1440 for your timeline and main editor suite UI
    (2) A standard office monitor where you have all of your clips, assets, etc to grab and pull in quickly. (Panoramic ideal)
    (3) A standard office monitor for things like the script, notes, desktop, etc. (Panoramic ideal)
    (4) Reference/grading monitor where you can fullscreen the project you're working on
    * Note separate GPUs are recommended for the displays and image processing.
I know that's a heck of a lot of text for a YT comment, and only the most dedicated of monitor nerds (like me) will have actually read it, but I hope it's useful to at least someone. :)

So I think this is a better deal for me considering high frame rates, But I am worried about the connectivity with mac (USB c), how does it work? it's fine? You are mentioning that there is some kind of issue with this as it does not work as USB c for connectivity. I am not sure. Kindly guide me. Looking forward. :) I want to use it mainly with my mac, and windows often & connectivity hubs are my main concern after all that.

Even after getting my 34' 1440p a few years back I still kept my dual 1080 setup to flank the big one . Trust me after a while it will feel wrong to use any smaller aspect monitors. I would try adding a second one in portrait to the right to be used for comms use like discord, web browsing, and other tasks while "content creating". Forgoing the stand I went with a monitor riser shelf so I can still have storage underneath it.

I've been trying many monitors, however, found 34" 3440x1440 the best option for me (for coding, movies, and sometimes games with split screen). Now I'm reconsidering my workspace again. Finally deciding between 32" UHD and 34" 3440x1440. The good thing about 34" is that I can easily split screen and use two apps, and I'm satisfied to have only one monitor cos it works like two.
But the total square of 32" is a bit bigger than 34", so I'm still thinking...

As someone that jumped on the ultrawide bandwagon really early, I can't disagree with any of your points.
I honestly thought we'd have some better options for snapping to the middle, or setting custom zones or... something, by now. Newp. I can make my windows take up half the screen or all of it. those are my options. I currently am in the habit of snapping firefox to the right, and discord to the left, then dragging firefox over until I can fit a full youtube video into the window.
I'm running the Acer XCR341CK (Terrible name. The g-sync version is the "Predator", and I'm over here with a screen I spent $300 less and I get this shit) which is a really nice 10-bit IPS panel @75hz with a freesync range from 30-75hz. Movies are beautiful. Games are amazing. I can't not use adaptive sync, and though it's not 100hz or 144hz, 75hz is still a pretty decent step over 60.
I have no desire to replace my screen any time soon. But it has it's frustrations and I can't ever recommend ultrawide to people without a big asterisk and some qualifiers.

Monitor arms that hold 17ish lbs will not function as advertised with a heavier monitor. That doesn't mean they will not hold a heavier one. See, a lot of them can be tightened, but will gradually lose flexibility. Mine is holding the 120hz Dell Alienware ultrawide. I had to tighten it so much that I can't easily move it up or down, I had to find a good height and sort of lock it at that. But it did allow me to get it at a good height and distance that I am very happy with. This arm was only $35, and entirely worth it just for that use IMO.

I play City Skylines on my ultrawide and it's great. I also had to learn how to snap windows. It actually works well if you're working with smart layers in Photoshop (you don't have to switch tabs). I'd just like to add that if you're a music producer or architect and change to a ultrawide monitor, you're basically fucked. I'm pretty sure I'll never consider going back to a 16:9 desktop monitor or even a laptop.
Using Gimp, Revit and Twinmotion simultaniously with a manageable screen real state, in the *same* monitor, was a game changer to me. Now I'm fast as fuck, boi.
As for the music stuff, now I'm always able to keep an eye on the mix and routing, ever with how littered some VSTs interfaces are.

I couldn't get into the 21:9 aspect ratio myself, in FPS games I didn't feel I had more of an advantage then how much it did distract me from keeping my eyes focused where they supposed to be (in the crossair). Other games did feel more immersive but still not to the point I felt I couldn't live without it. The desktop experience however didn't feel that great, I kinda have to use 2 monitors period, and hooking up 2 Ultrawides is kinda expensive and takes up a huge space. Also, alot videos still isn't in the 21:9 ratio and same goes for some games that scales poorly or simply zoom in instead of giving You extra visibility. One screen to consider tho if You need more vertical space and yet get ultrawide: LG 38GL950G-B with 3840x1600, it's still not 2160p if u comming from 4k :)

    I don't know.
For one, i NEED to have my near field monitors around the display. I don't know that i really NEED NEED them there but i don't think i have a better solution at this time. Naturally i could get them up above it and angle them down, but then i predict them to become incredibly sensitive to my position. Because... well there is a vertical phase cancellation pattern caused by the driver locations and the crossover, completely unavoidable, that's just in the nature of multi-way speakers.
For other, yes, the workflow. Just throwing something on the second monitor is so easy! And besides it's not like you can have a fullscreen application in a portion of an ultrawide running at adaptive sync.
Third, curve. I understand at sizes like this, it is a necessary evil, and may be relatively inoffensive - i mean, we had Trinitrons/Diamondtrons, and we lived. I haven't edited a video in decades, while i've done CAD and 3D modelling yesterday and digital painting not too long ago. I don't want the extra risk of it confusing me and making me question whether something has a subtle curvature or more or less of it or proportions of things.
Fourth, i primarily work with text, and you already made the point about vertical space.
Wide FOV gaming would be great, racing sims, FPS, etc, but when HUD is so far out of view, that's an absolute no-go, so you butt up again against software being at odds with it. Besides, i only have a gtx970, so that wouldn't get it very far. Now of course being poor, 1080p 16:9 6-bit panel monitors are the best i can hope for anyway, but with ultrawide and curved gradually becoming available, naturally i had some thoughts.

My first ultra-wide will be the Samsung Odyssey G9 as soon as it launches.
    5120x1440p, 240hz, 1ms, HDR1000, 1000R curve.
It was rumored to launched Q2 of this year, so April/May/June.... I can't wait.
And if Big Navi ends up a "true disruption at 4k", it will drive the 5120x1440 no sweat. I mean, we know its going to be double the core count at 80cu's.... that alone I theorized to be 30% faster than a 2080ti.... how did I get that number? Tech Yes City did a video of 2070 super in SLI vs a single 2080ti. In games that supported SLI, the 2070 SLI setup was 30% faster.... I know I know, how does a 2070 super relate to AMD you are asking.... well, the 5700xt is on par with the 2070 super, win some, lose some, tie some, in various games. So 2070 super SLI is like having 5700xt Crossfire.... so it can give us a theoretical performance area to look at. AKA 30%. So Big Navi will be AT LEAST 30% faster than a 2080ti..... but then AMD stated its RDNA2, and that RDNA2 is 50% faster than RDNA at same power consumption.... which means Big Navi can have a MINIMUM of 80% faster performance than a 2080ti. THAT IS INSANE. In my own mind, I think going double cores on a monolithic chip will be even faster than the 30% gains from the SLI setup, mainly because SLI isn't really efficient.... So in my mind, double cores, I assume AT LEAST 50% gains (I double double cores would be 100% gains). So 50% from double cores, then 50% from RDNA2, will be 100% faster than a 2080ti.... that really would disrupt 4k gaming.... If you get 120fps at 4k with X settings, then the new Big Navi should get 240fps at 4k with the same settings based on that % gains. The question is, how much of this ideal is true, and how will Nvidia combat AMD this year?
But still, I plan to get Big Navi and the new Samsung Odyssey G9. Its gonna be sweet. I hate dual monitors. I am on dual monitor now, but I have two different ones. I have a 1440p 144hz HDR that I was using for gaming, but now use as a secondary, and my primary I went back to 1080p for 240hz. Which causes a ton of fucking issues. Luckily, the G9 is like having TWO 2560x1440p screens in one. So I can have one monitor that will work the same as two.

@@TAGSlays I absolutely HATE watching streams from someone who plays ultrawide though. It's nauseating, and i can't even see bloody shit. @KuJoe 4 роки тому

@@TAGSlays if your game supports 21:9 correctly then it's a good experience, but games that just stretch to fit the 21:9 aspect ratio look pretty bad. The extra screen real estate for overlays, widgets, and cams can be really nice depending on the game genre so I can see how 21:9 would be good for certain types of games. Personally though, I've had more issues with gaming and streaming on an ultrawide than I've had good experiences so I can't wait to replace it. For now when I stream/record the first thing I do is set my monitor resolution back to 16:9 ratio so at least there's an easy workaround for it.

    • @TAGSlays
      @TAGSlays 4 роки тому +1

@@KuJoe Who plays games stretched? That's just dumb. Use a widescreen app if it supports the game, OR just set the resolution to be 16:9. No stretching. Honestly, If it doesn't play in 21:9 natively I just play it on my 4K monitor. Either way, never play it in stretched mode. The monitor will do 21:9, and 16:9 both... So there are black bars on the sides. Still no reason to NOT play the game in the proper aspect ratio. Most AAA games support UWHD today. And if they don't I generally do not support them.
