  • The BenQ EX2780Q is a 27" 1440p 144hz IPS gaming monitor with a built in speaker bar and 5 watt subwoofer. This is truly a gaming AND movie-watching experience in one monitor - not something we usually see.

[Product sent for review by BenQ]
This BenQ gaming monitor features up to 144hz high refresh rate, 2560x1440 high resolution, 2.1 speaker system, USB C connectivity, FreeSync support, AND glorious HDR - well, sorta. It's only 350 or 400 nits peak brightness, which isn't all that great for HDR. But it still looks nice and the Game and Cinema "HDRi" modes help give a competitive edge while gaming in HDR.
The remote is a really nice touch, too.
Too bad my monitor has a dead pixel!

Currently I'm testing out using a 55" LG OLED panel to replace my dual color grading and gaming monitor setup.
This is a straight up impractical setup for most, but it has honestly filled a lot of my requirements for an all-in-one work and play display. 4k, HDR, color accurate enough for critical work in multiple color spaces, ultra fast pixel response times, low input lag, 120hz, and GSync compatible.
I've tried so many displays and I always have an issue with color accuracy, uniformity, input lag, etc... It's especially hard to find a display that can do everything. And honestly

funny engou i just made a similar responce. i totaly agree. join the master race TV as monitor user, but its a high price TV 1500$ as u need the 55" models to show 120hz in 4k support the 49" only have 60hz 4k support.

@@henrikandersen4777 yeah it's definitely an expensive replacement to your average monitor. I will say that, at least for me, it was an absolute steal as all the monitors that competed with it were $2000 or above.

I just bought my wife a new BenQ monitor because it was one of the cheapest options on Amazon and I was pretty impressed with their quality, the Eye Care features, and the built-in speakers are decent also. After watching this review and confirming that I wasn't just lucky, I've added them to my list of monitor brands I'd recommend.

Hey Epos! I know that it might not be the best place to ask this, but I would appreciate it if you could give me an advice with this. Basically, I have a 3900X coupled with a 5700XT and 32GB Ram@3600Mhz. I want to start streaming and I don't know which one is better: encoding with my cpu in x264 or encoding with my GPU. I know that you've covered this topic on AMF a few months ago but I don't know if things have changed since then etc. I am running the latest driver for my gpu (19.12.3). My upload speed is also not a problem, as I have around 400Mbits upload speed. Thanks in advance and Happy New Year!

As long as it has a decent wide color gamut I can live without the 1000+ nit luminance. I still use a good CRT for a lot of things and the honest truth is monitors that bright hurt my eyes. I'm happy with 150-350 nits, it's the 10 bit color that interests me more. Not for gaming but for movies. If only these IPS panels had really black blacks like an Oled with the 400 nit limited brightness, that would be something I would really be interested in.

Ive been going crazy trying to find a good monitor for color accuracy, good contrast, picture quality. Like i keep switching from monitor to monitor. Never knew the hardest part of my build would be to find a monitor that does it all (which doesn’t seem to be any). Like i just want a monitor that is great for gaming and movies and idek what to go for its kinda driving me cray cray. This monitor looks promising but ive heard the lg gl850-b is a better choice but its contrast sucks, and i heard this one is better but, i dont know what to go for....

Yea, with monitors I have never ever gotten a dead pixel out the box or ever for that matter. My first hdtv was a emerson, from walmart, got a dead pixel out the box, brought it back. The next two boxes they gave me had dead pixels. Brought it back and got a sony bravia.
For $430 for them to have dead pixels out the box, maybe it was messed up in shipping, but that is not acceptable. Like you said, that type of stuff drives me up the wall. Can’t do it. I’d have to return it and ask for another, even if they sent it to me for review purposes. For that alone I’d have told them to ship another for my video and if they refused, i’d have moved forward with the video and given it a poor review.
I got the msi g27c4 and I have no dead pixels and it was $89 at walmart. It may not have HDR, or the movie/game stuff, but it doesn’t drive me up the wall. For editing with vegas, photoshop and streaming with obs it works just fine. I do however need to find another 27” curved monitor to match it.

The idea is that 144 and 120 are multiples of 24 so when you watch 24fps content it should display the content at the proper 24 without jutter that you might experience at 60 because 60 isn't a proper multiple and might have issues delivering frames as a result. You shouldn't have to bother changing hz.

I think TV's will be the bang for gaming/movies buck, at larger sizes, as they increasingly pay attention to gaming with the advent of the new consoles.
I've just switched from a monitor to a £300 43 inch 4k TV, and gaming is great on it (I don't play competitive shooters). The variety of inputs and the remote for it are such a boon. And it has wifi.

Wait, isn't 120Hz superior to 144Hz since 120 is an even multiple of 60, and some games are capped at 60FPS? Should I lower the refresh rate of my monitor to 120Hz? I barely notice a difference between 120Hz and 144Hz anyway.

Look at some pan and scan shots from any 24p film on a 60Hz panel! It looks really jerky. That's why some media players like MPC-BE include options to automatically change the refresh rate of the display, based on whatever video is playing. There are also Directshow filters like ReClock that fixes that annoying pulldown jutter. I guess you simply could search "pulldown jutter" on UA-cam to find some good examples.

And it have better colors and blacks , higher brust nits, the list go on and on. but its a 55" TV/pc monitor, so if you like me 27">to a 34" ultrawide>to a 49" super ultrawide> natural progression is a 55" OLED TV whit all the bells and extras pc monitors just dont have "yet".

Bad backlight bleed which ruins the hdr experience. 165hz is dumb.

And most monitors that are rated 165Hz or 144Hz on the box, are just marketing ratings.
165Hz panels run best on 144Hz and 144Hz panels run best on 120Hz.
Watch some "Hardware Unboxed" video's, they have the best graph for real refresh rate performance.

@@EposVox I think its natively 144HZ has to be overclocked to 165? Alot of reviewers have said good things about them so I was curious about your opinion on it too

I get that it's not "real hdr" but tbh I find lower brightness hdr a much better gaming experience

@@EposVox I agree. I think that's why I prefer HDR on OLED panels. However, I do think peak brightness is important for HDR content even if the general brightness level is set lower to preference.

There's way more that goes into a good HDR experience, and this monitor delivers far better than most I've reviewed. I'll have a video after CES coming that compares the "faux HDR" on a few monitors to the "real HDR" on both my TV and $1500 professional monitors to discuss this.

@@EposVox oh that's definitely true. I was just commenting on my anecdotal experience with peak brightness.
Most of the reason I tend to not like "fake HDR" displays is because they try to mimic the effects of having a high contrast and high peak brightness which usually tends to destroy any accuracy the monitor had in SDR.
This is more of an issue I have with implementation, not necessarily brightness. It's good to hear this monitor seems to go in a different direction. Look forward to hearing more of your thoughts on the subject.
