"Hello darkness my old friend, I've come to talk with you again" Paul Simon wrote this song in the 60's to describe peoples want to talk over others, but never listen to what the others have to say. Hence the line "People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening." He was a 20 something year old wanting to reach out to people and get them to understand one another. "take my voice that i might teach you, take my arms that i might reach you. But my words, like silent raindrops fell, and echoed in the wells of silence."
Not only that but he was very prophetic. We did create a neon god with technology... and hardly anyone communicates the way we used to. It's all through social media. We bow down to it every day.
Respectfully, I disagree. The song was written in the 1960's. The era of counterculture where questioning authority became the norm. This included challenging the government's explanations for it's actions and not blindly accepting them as truth. This was seen in the protests and civil unrest over America's involvement in the Vietnam War. Set to a folk song tune, the words seem to be reminding everyone of the dangers of remaining silent on government policy; that a lot can be lost if we simply let it happen and don't stand up and protest. Fast forward 50 years and Disturbed's version of the same message is delivered in a much more angry fashion. Sort of "you didn't listen 50 years ago, now look where we are." It's a reminder of the age-old message that the only thing evil needs to triumph over good is silence by those watching. I have to say, I absolutely love watching you "feel" the music. I love that you let yourself go, to experience the power of music. It's truly a beautiful thing to watch.
The song's lyrics are haunting. How I've always interpreted it as the death of the soul with the loss of connection with each other. We're so busy focusing on getting more, being more, having more...even more so with all the technology available these days-plugged into our phones when we're next to each other.
I cried the first time I heard this song and I am not an emotional person (take my word for it) its an amazing roller coaster ride of pure emotions that were brought from deep inside me I felt totally vulnerable. The music, voice, and song all come together and made it into a brilliant masterpiece of perfection.
That is what anybody should do with this. For many it's hard to one up S&G and of all bands in the world Disturbed hit a bases empty grandslam. I dare anyone short of the god whomever reads this believes in to sing this better. Period. The end
If that rendition of "the Sound of Silence " did not burn into the core of your soul and set your mind on fire.......you might want to check your pulse. You might be dead.
If you look up the live version Disturbed did, you'll see it's almost identical to the studio version. David simply blew this song into a new dimension.
The original version was a warning against the rise of technology (Television / now 'social media') - causing less and less 'human' interaction (think about how people brag they have 6,000 'friends' on Facebook, or how people will 'text' someone whom is literately sitting next to them, rather than just 'talk' to them). Disturbed's version is equated to the 'rage' of someone because those warnings were not listened to - and how its becoming so 'uncomfortable' to even just 'talk' to someone without worrying about offending or being offended, because it feels easier to just 'use social media' instead of our own voices. The short version is its a warning about humanity losing what makes us 'human' - and instead embracing the 'neon god' (tech) which lets us 'communicate' but also leaves us in silence - and in turn is making us forget HOW to communicate with each other.
This was more a warning against people staying silent, just accepting what they are given, not standing up for what is right, accepting being lied to by politicians, not so much technology being the problem.
This was one of the first songs I remember hearing. It came out when I was a kindergartner, and my parents had the album and played the grooves off of it. I remember as a little kid thinking that the first line was, "Out of the darkness smiled a friend."
Both Art Garfunkel and Paul Simon really liked this version and it reached a new generation with their message. I grew up with the original version listening to my dad’s 8-Tracks and radio. So I am 15+/- years younger than the people that criticize this version
I have been a fan of Disturbed for over 10 years now. They have amazing music. He is actually a Classically trained singer. That is why he has so much range and depth to his voice.
I was incredibly nervous the first time I heard this; Disturbed has a tendency to be known for a wilder sound and a fair bit of screaming. And I love how he just built up to the rage in this one and paced himself.
That is a cover that Disturbed is doing. He is a Classically trained singer. He does one of the best renditions of this song I've heard. The original is by Simon and Garfunkel from 1966.
"... the words of the prophets are written on subway walls and tenament halls ..." Simon & Garfunkel's rendition was a melancholy lament, full of resignation over the social disillusionment. I hear Disturbed's rendition as a powerfull call to arms, the anthem for the coming revolution!
No offense intended, and at the risk of sounding like the old fart that I am, how do so many young people not know of this incredibly powerful and classic song?
Im asking my 54 year old self the same thing. It blows my mind. I'm thinking its because they play video games and dont listen to real music. Most of the stuff they listen to these days just sux and is all computerized, sampling, things like that. Its the only answer I have.
I am 28 first time I heard sound of silence was when I was 13 or 14. You have to remember that most of the songs we will listen to as young people are the ones on the radio and this type of music hardly ever gets into the pop culture stuff that most young people listen to. Its sad but its hard to find diamonds when there are so many out there.
I was a "hippie" in the late 1960s and 1970's. I am so glad you are learning about the power of some many song in that time period, from mid 1960s and ended by 1990. It is just the way it was. Also in 1968 to 1970 I was one of DJ's at my college local AM Radio station.
-Draiman covers roughly two-and-a-half octaves from bottom to top. His vocals are so distinctive. -Disturbed had been nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Rock Performance for their rendition of "The Sound of Silence" while appearing on Conan. -David: "The fact that I was sick as a dog (laughs). I remember I was definitely fighting something off, but it was a cool experience. It was cool performing with an actual orchestra. It was really vibing and the mood helped, I think, enhance the delivery. The stars just aligned that night and everything went right." -
You should watch other talk shows where he performed. Conan and his producers insisted on adding a small bit of autotune to the mic to make it sound better for TV. He didn't want that. I'm not saying to say it wasn't good at all, just I believe it's better without the autotune. Check it out
Just as Johnny Cash covering Nine Inch Nails doesn't make sense on it's face, neither does Disturbed covering Simon & Garfunkel - but both are stellar.
I am always in awe of the way he has manipulated his voice to take you on a journey and forces you to pay attention to the words... I hope we all learn someday to take these words and use them to make changes. We all need to take a week and step away from social media. Video games. TV. Maybe even cell phones. And instead visit with our neighbors. Our relatives. Our friends. Really visit. Spend time with these people and be truly present.
Notice the arch of musicians crossing the river to the people on shore holding sheet music. They need each other to end the silence. Music is the universal language.

My interpretation of this song, revised: This song is written with two separate people or consciousnesses singing it. Those that are waking up and those that have been awake for a very long time. The first, third and fifth verse is sung from the perspective of the unawakened and the second and forth verse are sung from the perspective of the awakened. Hello, darkness, my old friend I've come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping Left its seeds while I was sleeping And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains Within the sound of silence Hello, darkness, my old friend is about people that have been kept in the dark and they're telling the darkness that they are experiencing something new in their vision. They (the awakened/aware ones) planted the seeds of truth/Light, and they are just starting to become aware. In restless dreams I walked alone Narrow streets of cobblestone 'Neath the halo of a streetlamp I turned my collar to the cold and damp When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light That split the night And touched the sound of silence There are fewer of the awakened, and they feel as if they are alone under the Light of truth, because they refused to by into the lies the dark has been trying to feed them. Then one day they saw a crack in the armor of dark, they saw a opportunity to break the sound of silence. And in the naked light I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more People talking without speaking People hearing without listening People writing songs that voices never share No one dared Disturb the sound of silence And in that moment they saw all of the light workers/star seeds (awakened Ones) telling those that were still asleep the truth/Light, through telepathy those that were sleeping heard and saw the truth/Light in a very subtle way, but yet they couldn't share this Light/truths with anyone for fear of being attacked by those that controlled the sound of silence. They wrote the truth in songs, the truth had to be give covertly as not to disturb the sound of silence (the dark). And when the people became aware of the Light/truth and realized that they had been in darkness the whole time, it really pissed them off. "Fools," said I, "You do not know Silence like a cancer grows Hear my words that I might teach you Take my arms that I might reach you." But my words like silent raindrops fell And echoed in the wells of silence They reached out to those still in slumber, trying to give them Light/truths, but they wouldn't open their minds to new truths, instead remained in the sound of silence. And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming And the sign said, "The words of the prophets Are written on the subway walls And tenement halls And whispered in the sounds of silence." The people were so caught up in working hard to pay for all of the things, the boats, cars, electronics, all of the toys that they covet. They couldn't see or hear the truth, they were too distracted by consumerism. The awakened/prophets have been trying to tell them through their songs and poems, and that whisper of Light/truth awakened the people from their slumber and they became ONE. Did you notice the ship sailing into the Light at the end of the studio version?
The singer of disturbed has had his voice studied by singing coaches and that most could not pull of his tone with that much strength repeatedly without damaging their vocal chords..theres a trick he learned to make those almost soothing raspy vibrations that make singers lose their voice, not effect him at all his voice is better from when he first became mainstream which was about 15 years ago..his voice has not deteriorated at alll, it only gets better but if even a pro singer attempted his style, they would develope permanent damage over time. not my words, lots of high profile singing coaches that major artists hire say the same thing..the original singer says "hello darkness my old friend, because when he practiced in the dark he was more comfortable and able to concentrate om his voice..then he starts talking sbout a vision in his dream that wont leave his mind..its about how people are becoming shallow and dependent on technology and expensive material possessions that mean nothing untill someone sees them on a advertisement or billboard..the original song is old and all the lights used to draw attention to a product were neon.."people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made" hes describing being materialistic.."people talking without speaking, people hearing without listening" hes saying people are not spreading a meaningful message and that the content of music is becoming dumbed down because peoples lyrics are loosing depth and becoming trash because everyone just wants to listen to a good hook and beat but dont absorb the lyrics so artists dont need to put effort into lyrics and the songs never shared are the ones that are musical works of art but they go unnoticed because people are are becoming more and more shallow and dumbed down. he saw a patttern in our behavior that worried him about the future of humanity..his prophecy came true..all people care about is what designer brand is trending or look at how mumble rap lacks complexity, meaning, the only message is drugs, money, thots and jewelry..its the epitome of shallow

I heard that Paul Simon himself, was so humbled and impressed by Disturb’s version, that he literally told them that it’s THEIR song now!
Folk Music Lovers: Simon and Garfunkel's Sound of Silence could never be redone.
Disturbed: Hold my beer.
This is the best description of this song I have ever seen.
Exactly....never been one for covers...but this is the best one ever
It's ok, but it doesn't evoke silence (which was the point) the way that Simon's original (sans drums and bass, the way they recorded it, first) ...
Except, no folkie would ever have said that; folk music lives and breathes by the fact that other people play the tunes and sing the songs.
OH so true!
SHE WASN'T READY 😂😂😂. your face when he hit those notes said it all.
For none of it after 4:40 lol
Everybody , who hears this can't be ready for how good it is !!!!!!! Conan's performance ….. Even better !
That’s what I said, that she wasn’t ready for that! Love it!
His energy could be frightful to most who aren't prepared making pp and poopoo in the shorts.
Their live performance in Conan really showed how good his vocal is.
The Conan version had autotune
He did not know they were going to auto tune him. Oh, and he was so sick they had to have him sitting because he couldn’t stand for long, and still gave a great performance. But yeah, he was auto tuned🙄

@@rolandoalaniz12 problem is simon and garfunkel done it without autotune, i do love this version but not as much and we must face facts here, but his voice is strong
This version of Sound of Silence brings tears in my eyes every time I hear it. The way David’s voice builds up to the finale. Gosh! Words can’t explain it. You just have to let it in and it takes over your mind and soul! Man! He has some amazing pipes! That voice and those piecing eyes
The fact that Paul Simon himself said this is now Disturbeds song tells alot. The warning behind the orginal and the power Disturbed delivered over 50ys later because the warning was not heard tells it all
Sushi: "I hope it is uplifting."
Not uplifting, simply powerful.
Not uplifting, but definitely moving and thought provoking. I don't think she was disappointed, even though it wasn't the mood she was hoping for.
"His voice is a choir." Wow! Pretty apt statement.
I can't hardly listen to this. I just would rather listen to down with the sickness or Stupified. Of course his voice is awesome.
"I'm hoping for happy and uplifting!"
Oh my sweet summer child...

Agreed.
LOLzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!
His words are powerful, but his message is exponentially more powerful.
this song gives me the chills and you can see it was giving her chills as well
Introduced to this version by a friend much younger than I. He knew I loved Simon and Garfunkel. Because I'm not a fan of covers,I didn't expect much. Well, the hairs on my arms stood up. Need I say more.
I could only imagine Him preforming the nation anthem... I bet it would be awesome.

I have to say, I absolutely love watching you "feel" the music. I love that you let yourself go, to experience the power of music. It's truly a beautiful thing to watch.
"I'm hoping this song is not going to be sad. I'm hoping it's going to be happy, and uplifting." Uh-oh .

Every time I hear it. Such a powerful song and message.

I saw the the emotion run through you while watching this, you're right, this song is very powerful
David Draiman studied in Operatic Singing. He left because he was told his voice was too deep for Opera.
He trained to be a cantor.

Seen them in concert twice, his voice is 100 times more powerful live.
His voice and this song are more than just a voice and a song. They are together a force of nature.
I think the song is about the way so many people stay quiet, about matters they're passionate about.

The original is best
Amen to that
If you look up the live version Disturbed did, you'll see it's almost identical to the studio version.
@@bexmacphee7987 i feel like this could apply to the rise of technology as well
This was one of the first songs I remember hearing.

One of the best male vocalist of all time. He is classically and opera trained. Amazing stuff.
Both this and johnny cash’s “hurt”. Best covers of all time

I have been a fan of Disturbed for over 10 years now. They have amazing music. He is actually a Classically trained singer. That is why he has so much range and depth to his voice.
Less a classically trained singer and more accurately he was trained as a cantor. That's where his power and projection comes from.
I was incredibly nervous the first time I heard this; Disturbed has a tendency to be known for a wilder sound and a fair bit of screaming.
And I love how he just built up to the rage in this one and paced himself.

This song was written many years ago by Paul Simon, in his dark bathroom, which just happened to be his favorite place to write songs.
That is a cover that Disturbed is doing. He is a Classically trained singer. He does one of the best renditions of this song I've heard. The original is by Simon and Garfunkel from 1966.
This is my favorite cover of this song. I like it more the Simon and Garfunkel's. It's honestly the first time I "felt" the song.

Simon & Garfunkel's rendition was a melancholy lament,
full of resignation over the social disillusionment.
I hear Disturbed's rendition as a powerfull
call to arms, the anthem for the coming revolution!
David Draiman is a classically trained singer. and he doesn't use autotuned or any other voice enhancements
Did he say that? I'd be surprised if he didn't, a lot of artist, even ones who are talented at vocals, use autotune at a minor level
The original song is by Simon and Garfunkel

Its that neon god.
Wait till you hear the actual version. Simon and Garfunkel. The harmony is incredible.
I was a "hippie" in the late 1960s and 1970's. I am so glad you are learning about the power of some many song in that time period,
from mid 1960s and ended by 1990. It is just the way it was.
Also in 1968 to 1970 I was one of DJ's at my college local AM Radio station.
"His voice is a choir".

Yep definitely have to react to the official music video for The Light by Disturbed!
Simon and Garfunkel Loved this version and called them up and thanked him for doing it.
The stars just aligned that night and everything went right."

The acoustic version of this on Conan is epic!
Best version ever
It's quite a bit better, IMO. It's by far the most watched video on Conan's youtube channel as well.
nah, this one is so much more powerful and moving.
You should watch other talk shows where he performed. Conan and his producers insisted on adding a small bit of autotune to the mic to make it sound better for TV. He didn't want that. I'm not saying to say it wasn't good at all, just I believe it's better without the autotune. Check it out
Have to checkout that funny 😂 seeing people's reaction.
My mom always said “if a person shows you something you enjoy thank them “.Thankyou. my twin brother and my son would have loved this video
The song "The Light" by Disturbed has an amazing message.

I'm so incredibly happy for you to have an opportunity to discover great music.
Yeah not around nowadays
But this song is amazing at showing off his vocal talents. It’s incredible.
Notice the arch of musicians crossing the river to the people on shore holding sheet music. They need each other to end the silence. Music is the universal language.

Truly sorry to hear about your sister . It was always one of my favorite songs too.
My interpretation of this song, revised:
This song is written with two separate people or consciousnesses singing
it. Those that are waking up and those that have been awake for a very
long time. The first, third and fifth verse is sung from the perspective
of the unawakened and the second and forth verse are sung from the
perspective of the awakened.
Hello, darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
Hello, darkness, my old friend is about people that have been kept in
the dark and they're telling the darkness that they are experiencing
something new in their vision. They (the awakened/aware ones) planted
the seeds of truth/Light, and they are just starting to become aware.
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a streetlamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
There are fewer of the awakened, and they feel as if they are alone
under the Light of truth, because they refused to by into the lies the
dark has been trying to feed them. Then one day they saw a crack in
the armor of dark, they saw a opportunity to break the sound of silence.
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
No one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
And in that moment they saw all of the light workers/star seeds
(awakened Ones) telling
those that were still asleep the truth/Light, through telepathy
those that were sleeping heard and saw the truth/Light in a very subtle
way,
but yet they couldn't share this Light/truths with anyone for fear of
being attacked
by those that controlled the sound of silence.
They wrote the truth in songs, the truth had to be give covertly as not
to disturb the sound of silence (the dark). And when the people became
aware of the
Light/truth and realized that they had been in darkness the whole time,
it really pissed them off.
"Fools," said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
They reached out to those still in slumber, trying to give them
Light/truths, but they wouldn't open their minds to new truths, instead
remained in the sound of silence.
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence."
The people were so caught up in working hard to pay for all of the
things, the boats, cars, electronics, all of the toys that they covet.
They couldn't see or hear the truth, they were too distracted by
consumerism. The awakened/prophets have been trying to tell them through
their songs and poems, and that whisper of Light/truth awakened the
people from their slumber and they became ONE. Did you notice the ship
sailing into the Light at the end of the studio version?
Wow, thank you Sushi - never heard of that guy (or band) - yes living under a rock for past 10 years....awesome.
Thanks for the education. I mean it. As much as I loved Simon & Garfunkel - and especially this song - I must admit that never in all my years did I pay as much attention to the lyrics as I should have. In my ignorance, I simply put the lyrics down to how people can become absorbed by crass consumerism. From your comment it was much, much more insidious than that. Much more.
Thank you.
@@tompurcell1499 He used alot of metaphors, I tried to interpret it..i thought it was about people being distracted with TV and not communicating with loved ones or maybe religion and how youd have to remain silent about blasphemous thoughts or ideas because of the god line and "no one dared disturbedf the sound of silence", out of fear of being shunned..but i researched it and found multiple theories but nothing from the source or close to it and found out the original writer spread misinformation about the meaning of the song. Then i finally find a credible source site that had the interview with a close friend and he explained what he was told but felt there was more but he didnt push the issue. Theres celebrity voice coaches on youtube who will analyze singers ppl request to see if they are legit, the 3 i watched were blown away and didnt believe the singer of disturbed could actually be doing that without just dismantling his career time with his voice but his voice has remained strong..He covered this song flawlessly and i loved it b4 it was remade but the soft almost haunting sound of the song didnt demand the full capability of his talent..youre welcome..it took me a while to find the right source so i just wanted people to realize how accurate and significant this song is..True work of art

Some songs can convey different interpretations, I suppose. As it happens, as a result of your comment, I went onto a voice coach's channel and she first thought that David Draiman was using auto-tune (which I never heard of before). However, I think she ended up accepting his voice as the real thing.
But thanks for your info. All the best!
@@tompurcell1499 lol no ive been to his concerts..he actually explained how he learned it, it took alot of practice but he can hit multiple notes at the same time that makes it sound like autotune or editing multiple layers just in different pitches on top of each other and hes been accused but more credible people know the truth..its not impossible to hit 2 or more notes with your voice at once..old mongolian throat singers could hit multiple pitches and notes along with that raspy vibration to give it a unique touch all at once..Hes just very talented, ive been to his concerts and he sings live right there, he doesnt sing along to song playing out the speakers, he will finish the concert, yelling the entire time and his voice is fine afterwards
@@tompurcell1499 you are very right about songs being interpreted in many ways depending on the times, events or what the individual listener draws from them..and a bar from a song can hit multiple subjects and whatever you are going through or have been through which will influence your interpretation..especially deep songs and not simplified direct trash

It´s a cover of the main theme of 'the film 'The Graduate ´´ by Simon and Garfunkel.
This was originally written and performed by Simon and Garfunkel in the 60’s. It’s a very prophetic song because it’s speaking about people worshipping technology over human contact. Which wasn’t even around in the 60’s. People say the original was warning us and this version by Disturbed has an angry vibe because it’s telling us now and we didn’t listen. Idk but man...this is hauntingly beautiful
