A Rower's Diet: 7000 Calories Every Day MINIMUM

  • Hello Yotubers! After receiving my new fitness watch I have been looking at the stats it is giving me. What I find really interesting is the calories burned. 7000 calories every day is a lot of calories and to be very honest more than I would see on a day, especially when the day wasn't a 'full day'. Hopefully soon I will be able to make a video and see how many calories I can burn in a full day given that is the goal, rather than an outcome of training.

    Hi cam. I've been using a polar watch since February to track all my rowing training and more. The caloric expense will be even more accurate if you enter your v02 max in your settings. I did a test that my watch proposed. For me, the number of calories burned for really high for some same effort workouts, since my estimated V02 max was high.
    I hope this makes sens and will help you find out if your watch is accurate with the calories

      Already entered! Although pretty sure the number I put in is lower than it actually is! #yamsquad

      2000 is extremely low if you're training. Like in this video I did 2 sessions and burned over 2k, in your case that'd mean you're in a negative calorie consumption!

    I have owned several Polar watches over the years which I have used in conjunction with a heart rate monitor strap. Heart rate readout is accurate and calories burnt is consistent in the sense that the same workout done day after day shows about the same calories expended - something which is useful for keeping you honest in the gym. In terms of absolute calories consumed for any piece of exercise I don't consider these devices very accurate. Each of my Polar heart rate monitors gives quite different numbers of calories for the same exercise. The variation in calories burnt is of the order +/- 30% between my devices.

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  4 роки тому

      Are the devices that use a chest strap similar to eachother? I can see if the HR is all over the shop then the calorie burned value could be inaccurate. Have you seen a difference in the older watches giving different values to the newer watches? Really interesting topic!

    • @iankidd5414
      @iankidd5414 4 роки тому +1

      @@CameronBuchan I think all devices operate in very much the same way. They pickup up a heart rate from the user which is very simple technology and then use that data in a calculation to give the calories burnt number. The variation comes in the calculation part as it is very complex and to be accurate would require a large number of physiological inputs. Simpler watches make many approximations depending on manufacturer or model.

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  4 роки тому

      Agreed. That's why I ask if the newer watches may give different numbers. Perhaps tech has improved where the calculations are better!

    Good video, and super fascinating. The calories seem high! Guessing part must be the energy required to move your relatively big body around? Would love to see more on the subject. And a provocation: a strong man like Eddie Hall will eat 10-12K a day and it’s a LOT. Energy consumption for rowing vs straight heavy weight training?

    • @wongawonga1000
      @wongawonga1000 4 роки тому +4

      I would LOVE to see Cam and Eddie Hall get together for a training session. Eddie is doing allot more cardio these days so Cam's style of work out would probably suit his training needs. Based upon one of Eddie's recent videos, they both have similar calorie needs too. The interesting part would be to see how Eddie's immense strength would fair against Cam's stamina - particularly now that Eddie has been doing allot more cardio. If nothing else, the two extroverted personalities would make for a pretty full-on video. Also, Eddie would be able to introduce Cam to the benefits of Cranberry Juice for staying hydrated. I can only foresee two issues: 1) If Eddie decides to fart and 2) If Eddie breaks out his leotard for the session (I found the whole leotard thing quite disturbing).
      Cam, if you read this: hint hint!!!

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, moving around 225 requires some energy but probably more the faster metabolism is what is pushing the numbers so high as the numbers for, say the erg, aren't actually 'that high' as I've become reasonably efficient on BAE!
      Would love to do something with Eddie Hall! Think it would be hilarious, just need to know who to get in touch with! Quote difficult to talk to the right people to set it up. If you have any ideas let me know!! #yamsquad

    I think the polar system does over estimate the calorie burn. I’m not a professional athlete, row in the morning and then do a desk job all day and it estimates I burn around 3800kcals on average. It would have been a lot easier to lose weight if that was true 😛
    I have the Polar Vantage M

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  4 роки тому +1

      Well depending on your row on the morning you could be burning 1000+ calories which then doesn't leave 'that' much for the rest of the day. It might not be that far off!

    • @DavidWebb_uk
      @DavidWebb_uk 4 роки тому +1

      @@CameronBuchan similar experience to you with the HR calorie and the PM3 calorie estimate being close (800-1000kcals) and when doing an activity on the watch (walking etc) it seems pretty good. General office based movement. I think it's a bit generous.
      I'm nearly at my goal weight so I'll be shifting to trying to maintain so that'll be another good indication.
