    At the ripe old age of 76 I took up the cudgels and trained for several months gradually increasing the distances from a mere half marathon, full`marathon then a couple of 50K's before I attempted the Century. Obviously I required the permission of my local gym, as I would be using the erg for most of the day, which they kindly granted.
    I used a folded towel, Concept sponge seat and best of all, the secret ingredient, Bum Butter. Bikers would all be aware of this creamy saviour.
    Fuel, hydration and toilet breaks were going to be very important if I was to complete the challenge.
    I looked on the Concept site and discovered the Century hadn't been completed in my age/weight group for more than twenty years.
    Clearly there were good reasons for this!
    However, I completed the task in 8 hours, 57 mins, which included stopping for 34 mins.
    I felt ok at 40K, when I stopped for a toilet break, plus fuel, but at 75K I felt done for. However your efforts inspired me to continue and I pulled in hard for the last 2k at the wondrous split of 2.10.LOL
    Would I do it again, possibly next year, if I am still alive.

    W.o.w. Captain Buchan, you made 100k in a day look easy! Syncing your 💯 to to C2 logbook World ERG challenge will push the Yamsquad over 16 million metres in just over 8 days!! I'm surprised your watch indicated only 1000 calories burned on the first 25km (likely closer to 1600) I don't think heart rate is a reliable indicator of calories burned. 120 HR for your first 25km just shows how fit you are, and doesn't measure how much work you did or how much energy was required to do that work. I suspect your watch algorithm really underestimated your calories burned because it's likely based on some data that contains averages in which most people with a HR of 120 can only burn about 600 calories/hour (something like that). It was more accurate for your last 3 sessions because your HR was closer to data averages, though I suspect for your size, it was still an underestimate. Just my suspicion.

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  4 роки тому +1

      Also, the variables like cardiac output and being seated come into play. Cam is a beast so his heart is able to deliver tons of oxygen per beat.
      I'm no cardiophysiologist but I bet if we knew his VO2 max we could better estimate caloric burn.

    For fitness, is it better to train at lower heart rates (140-50ish) or higher heart rates (160-70ish)? Is doing 1 hour at 170 less beneficial than 1 hour at 150?

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  4 роки тому

      Depends on your goals, weakness and your stats as a human being. 65% is where you gain the most aerobic benefits for the least effort. Going higher than this enters other zones, depletes energy faster and encroaches on other sessions
