  • Hello UA-camrs! Today we managed to get back out on the water and what a lovely day out on the water it was! A priveledge to be on the water and it also makes it that little bit easier to focus on technique with less extrenal factors to deal with. As always, the journey is not always smooth and just when i feel like I am improving reasonably I get hit with a mistake that reminds me that I am still a beginner and have to keep the focus to stay afloat!

    I use the Garmin Vivosport as a fitness tracker, and while it is great for most things it's one quirk is it doesn't track heart rate accurately while using the erg - a recognised problem and something to do with the way skin moves around the wrist confusing the optical sensor. Unfortunately it is incompatible with any chest strap monitors.

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  4 роки тому

      Yes, wrist HR is notoriously inaccurate, I don't really trust the HR on my watch from the wrist!

    2:17, if you freeze frame at the point where thing starts going awry, you can see that the reflex was to bend the elbows, and add all sorts of new vertical movements, to make a crisis out of a drama. (Vertical movements = flip).
    The trick is to go limp for a moment when you clip a log with your spoons / get caught in weed, whatever it is.
    100kg takes an awful lot to flip over. So, if you don't throw in all sorts of hand movements, but just let the caught up spoon resolve itself, and keep the balance with the other hand, drama is lessened, halved.
    You seem to have knocked something with the left spoon, but your right hand goes on an interesting adventure all on its own, to magnify the left hand drama many times over. watch it a 0.25 speed..... horror show!
    "Don't do that". (sculling is simple! if you relax).

      @@CameronBuchan Can i suggest that you let your outing buddy have a 5 minute paddle in your boat, to get a second opinion on the set-up from someone experienced in 1x, to feel the blades/boat working set-up for you.
      (covid advice, give the hands/handles a soapy wash on each change).
      Your outing looks a very twitchy, and honestly, it need not be so, nor should be so.
      That could be you, but could also be the boat set-up: story:-
      My (old) sculls' collars wore down a bit, and one day, strangely so suddenly, they made my boat un-rowable: i looked just like you, tense and twitchy.
      Sometimes, a really little thing can screw up a boat set-up, and make a novice rower out of anyone.
      As a new sculler, you have no great reference on how a single should feel, where your buddy will know instinctively if your boat is "normal" .
      If the boat is 'normal' to your buddy, the twitchi-ness is indeed then your fault.
      At least you then know that for sure then. It would be a shame to waste loads of time trying to learn on a naff set-up.
      As you are not experienced in how a single should feel when perfect, you cannot know whether your boat is perfect, or 'a nail', whether it is all down to you, or if the boat set up is needing a bit of attention.

      @@CameronBuchan happy to bung an idea your way to help. Whilst absolutely simple when experienced, the 1x can initially be a tricky game at times, particularly when setting off at your stage, with high expectations from larger boats.

    Yeah, rigger just touching the water, that's nowhere near going in :-) If you want to scull one hand above the other, just need a little more offset in the swivel heights. I prefer to do that because it helps to get the arcs symmetrical, which seems to work better for me than trying to knit the handles together at different speeds or scull slightly different lengths.
    Have you tried a Polar strap (I use a simple H7) with the Polar Beat app on your phone? You get a GPS trace as well as heart rate and zones, it's quite nice. Stick the phone in an aquapac and it is waterproofed and strapped to the footplate.

      Second person to have said that! If the reverse wing is in the water it's not going to be a great time! I'll have to try harder!

    Late square looks like the root cause. Looks like you were not fully square as you take the catch. Blades properly off the water makes that easier. You tend to hit the water as you square because your blades are too close to the water.

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  4 роки тому

      I agree the late square is an issue but not the root cause. The root cause in my understanding is my hand positioning and ability to balance. The reason I'm tapping the water before the square is a lack of confidence and "tells me" where the water is. Over time, with drills and patience this will improve. Already good improvements since last week!

    • @dermotbalaam5358
      @dermotbalaam5358 4 роки тому +1

      Cameron Buchan Fair call. When it comes to balance it can be better to approach it from a viewpoint of eliminating the things that lead to imbalance, rather than actively trying to balance. First of those is probably staying loose and relaxed.

      @@CameronBuchan maybe you have a more experienced coach, but I think, the thing which will give you way more stability is the same handle height at the finish. In this camera angle it becomes pretty obvious. Nevertheless, it looked like a really nice paddle

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  4 роки тому +1

      @@dermotbalaam5358 agreed on both terms. I guess what I really mean is trying to fix the smaller more beginner things (like Laurits is saying about hand spacing) that should lead to for example, blades getting odd the water one day!
