For those wondering, on the second pass/touch, any plane EXCEPT the opposing team's plane is legal to play. Also on the second pass, it is legal to CROSS a non legal space (net, line, etc).
So the setter crossed legally into the opposing teams space, but only made contact when it was out, and therefore no longer in the opposing team's area of play

Opposing players should go to the corner of THEIR playing space where the setter needs to go through so he cannot go through their side set the ball. They're not obligated to allow the opposing players to come into their space before leaving their space to play the ball.

Like when would he hit it otherwise? Not on the 1st pass cos it would be his point anyway. Not on the 3rd pass cos the point is already lost. Not when it'll hit in the opponents court cos the point is still in play. There's only that 1 instance he would ever run to the opposite side side of the net and that's to hit it back for the 3rd pass

@@ForumLight that is totally legal. The opponent can also touch the net on the second pass, for example, to deflect a pass into the net. A lot of things the opposing team can do on the second pass to "not help" the attacking team, just that they don't often get the chance to do so

And they are strictly prohibited on the 3rd pass for those exact reasons

I just want to draw attention to the spiker.
Don't let the fact that this video is clearly slowed down draw you away from the fact that the spiker only had about 0.5-1 second to react, move and jump to where the setter had bounced the ball back to his side of the court. Then he successfully spiked it hard and deep (that's what she said) and won the point. Great job 🎉

And anyway, they have to leave the net, because a ball that gets set like this, is never going to be a hard driven ball, there is no point in blocking. It's better for everybody to participate in floor defense.
But their formation was bad, they should have been standing deeper. My guess is they were expecting a bad set and a free ball, but Micah somehow makes a hittable set and defalco managed to hit it hard.

For those wondering why the other team (Germany) is complaning.. Long story short, at this level, it’s part of “the show”. The officials, players and coaches know this. The rules about it are: if the receive goes through legal space (over the net in between antennas) it’s gone. However if it goes through illegal space (under the net, or right/left) you can continue to play. Then the set must go through illegal space again (never over the net) and then has to be returned through legal space

The ball can ONLY cross the net between the antennas once per posession. As lon gas the over set is not between the antennas its legal. This does NOT look to be legal.
Note it must pass BETWEEN and not over. 1mm over the antenna, is OB.
