It is said that George Jones was the only person on the planet who could get 10 notes out of one syllable. You caught that when he said "HER today". I'm very proud of you for immediately catching on to the fact that "they placed a wreath upon his door" was another way of saying he had died. I watched one reaction and the guy listened to the entire song, and he had a huge smile on his face and said, "He finally moved on because he stopped loving her today." I sort of wanted to bang my head against the wall because he TOTALLY missed the point of the song. You said it's a sad song and yes, it is. In fact, it's so sad that George did not want to record it because he said, "It so sad that no one will want to hear it." It became his biggest hit! Thank you so much for reacting to this monster hit by George Jones!

Geez! I knew that this song was going this way. And now I'm crying. I know G.J.'s history. Grew up with this music. And now 50 years later, I'm crying. 🙁
Talk about crying, I drove into Nashville for the first time on April 26, 2013 around 10:00 AM and as I was pulling into the city they announced on the radio that George Jones had just passed away. My friends and I stayed all week, they went to the funeral, I watched it from our hotel room. Every country artist you could think of was there. George’s wife was in the front row of the Grand Ol Opry and Allen Jackson sung “He stopped loving her today”, there was as not a dry eye in the building.
George Jones was one helluva nice and humble person who never forgot where he came from and would talk to anyone like he knew them forever. He fell into the addictions that accompany fame a lot but I'm proud to say he was one of my heroes and a friend. Nobody did it better than George. R.I.P. my friend. I miss you
I am so glad you understood. So many people today either don't catch or don't understand the line "they placed a wreath upon his door". Here in the deep south we still place a wreath on the door of a deceased person.

Hello Confusion ... 💙💙💙🎼💙💙💙 .. so you made it to the greatest Country Music song of all time. All others are compared to this .. a true pleasure to see you enjoy this. George Jones is on Mt Rushmore.. this is what Country Music is all about. TY
George was a true icon🎉❤. He was desperately alcoholic, it really interfered with this personal life, his career and I believe his spirituality. George Jones and Tammy Wynette sang together for years. They had a very tumultuous relationship 4 years. George and Tammy are worth a deep dive. Poor George. Pulled over on the freeway trying to get to the liquor store. I finally took this cars away after so many drunk driving tickets, no problem for George, he tried to drive his lawnmower😂🤣🙄 the law man got him first😮😮😮
And they should get it when they place a wreath upon his door but people don't really do that anymore...y'all they used to put a black wreath on the door to let people know...
I saw George Jones in concert several years before he passed. As soon as the first rift on the guitar played this song, the whole stadium was on its feet! Certainly one of his best. Other good ones by Jones are Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes and The Grand Tour.
This is considered to be the greatest country song of all time. And George is arguably the greatest country singer. When he first heard the song he said " I'll sing it. I love the song. But, it will never sell. It's just to damn sad."
Released in 1980, this was named the number 4 saddest song in country music history by Rolling Stone Magazine. George didn't even want to do this song at first, yet it became his biggest hit.
The song got nominated in 1980 and 1981. Not sure if it got an award for both years. Brit, check out his hair for White Lightning. Other songs George sang were Bartender's Blues, She Still Thinks I Still Care, The Race Is On, and there is another song where he uses his upper range and lower range. Conway Twitty is a singer to check out. His hits are Hello Darlin', Don't Cry, Joni (a story song you might like,) It's Only Make Believe, Slow Hand (Pointer Sisters' song), The Rose (Bette Midler song), Lay You Down, and more.
No one ever said RS magazine was ever astute. Not only was this the saddest song ever written, It was also the greatest love song ever written. That's a lot considering some of Elvis's songs.
If I remember right, this song was the #1 Country song of both 1980 & 1981. It must have been released at just the right time to straddle the two years.
I was a teenager into my 20's in the 1970's. I loved and played rock n roll. Later in life I found an appreciation for, and then a love for old country music. With apologies to Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin, Puccini's Nessun Dorma...and several thousand others...This song, sang by this man, is the one and only perfect song every recorded.
lol I still come back to this one almost a year later,, you crack me up the first time you heard this song,,, right when it dawned on you the mfer was dead,,,, lmao... Instant Classic,,, Brit,,, you're alright... lol
OMG woman! Not only have I been observing people get introduced to this song that weren't really familiar with the older Country Music my whole life, I have also watched many reactions to it and I am not exaggerating when I say that you are the very fastest reaction to get this that I have ever seen. Ever. You got it right in the middle of the third line of the chorus, "All dressed up to go away." You are so damn quick. The line that absolutely kills me initially though is the second line, where they placed a wreath upon his door. That for me is when the whole meaning of the song starts to shift, and I think that's what happened to you as well, and then that next line confirms it. A lot of people don't even get it by the end of the song. And to be fair, I was a child when I first started hearing it on the radio, but it really wasn't until I was older that it dawned on me what the real meaning was. To me as a little kid, it was just another sappy adult song, but it was such a massive hit and I could literally see it make the older women in my family get teary-eyed. But it transcended for me because his voice is so amazing and I loved George Jones even then, mostly because of his upbeat funny stuff. The Ole' Possum, as they called him, was the King of Country Music there for a while, along with his wife Tammy Wynette, the Queen of Country Music. And she is still probably my favorite country singer, although there are many. But there is also a singer from decades later in the 90s that someone mentioned below, whom I absolutely revere. Her real-life story is heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time, and her name is Patti Loveless. Check out one of her biggest earlier hit songs, The Night's Too Long. I think you would love the lyrics because it's kind of about empowerment but it also talks about what happens when you buy into the regular work world to get ahead, and I've seen you talk about your own experience with that not that long ago. Plus I love the song, it just kicks and her voice is incredible. She really represents the older style of country music even while she was breaking norms in the 90s. As far as George Jones, there is some early stuff in black and white footage that shows his manic and hilarious side, for example White Lightning, huge early hit for him. But since you are new to country music, and I thought of this the other day on the Patsy Cline reaction, you are excellent at picking out little voice ornamentations and pitch and you can replicate it perfectly, but what you REALLY have to pay very close attention to in this kind of music, is the vocal phrasing. It is a complete art and it is amazing when you really start to notice what all they are doing, and it can get technically very rhythmically complicated, and yet they make it sound so natural, just part of the emotional conversation they are having with you. It reminds me of the concept of flow in hip-hop and rap. They sing before the beat and after the beat and they stretch things out and then compress them, and it's very malleable and expressive. So much so that it actually takes talented musicians and a tight band or studio musicians to be able to hold down the beat with the right feeling underneath it and not be pulled off of the meter. "Rubato" would be the closest classical term for it. And then when it hits right on the beat, it has all this punch - it just creates wonderful emotional tension and then release. It's my favorite thing about country music singing and a lot of other singing for that matter. I love the way Tammy Wynette phrases as well, but it really is a hallmark of good country music singing. Conway Twitty singing Hello, Darling is another fantastic example from later the 1970s. And there is a live cut of that floating around UA-cam that is quite popular. Absolutely love your reactions. And I'm so happy that you've got the media playback volume up and really present now, and got rid of the echo and the thin sounding mix by using good headphones. It's already one of the best presented reaction channels out there and I love it. I also really like how the video just starts right in and once you do your sign-off, it's immediately over. There's something about that that really appeals to me. Congratulations on 30K subs!

Yes he did, but not in this lifetime! Another George Jones song is The One I Loved Before and. Whose Gonna Fill Their Shoes! ❤❤❤
George....one of the very greatest.
At the end, he was escorted home by a chorus of angels and now, all the pain is over. He's finally at peace.
Geez! I knew that this song was going this way. And now I'm crying. I know G.J.'s history. Grew up with this music. And now 50 years later, I'm crying. 🙁
I grew up with his music. Seeing you discover George and how the story hits you half way through brought me to tears. Thanks
Listen to a George Jones song called "The Grand Tour". Absolutely beautiful. Another beautiful song by George Jones is "A Picture Of Me Without You".
This is the greatest country song ever made
The number one country song of all time!
you got the meaning in this song right away, im 54 and heard this song as a child and did not get it till i was in my 20's congrats,
George Jones was one helluva nice and humble person who never forgot where he came from and would talk to anyone like he knew them forever. He fell into the addictions that accompany fame a lot but I'm proud to say he was one of my heroes and a friend. Nobody did it better than George. R.I.P. my friend. I miss you
The greatest country song and singer ever !
Always chosen as one of the best country song of all time.
I am so glad you understood. So many people today either don't catch or don't understand the line "they placed a wreath upon his door". Here in the deep south we still place a wreath on the door of a deceased person.
That is the top country song of all time by the top country singer of all time. Thank you so much for listening to it. It’s been my favorite song for decades.
I finally took this cars away after so many drunk driving tickets, no problem for George, he tried to drive his lawnmower😂🤣🙄 the law man got him first😮😮😮
Sooo glad you caught the meaning of the song. Can't tell you how many reactioners have missed it. "He said I'll love you, till I die...." Great job!
Over 30 years I've listened to this song, and every year it hits harder. Truth cuts deep. Here's to the possum.
I am glad you found traditional country music. George Jones is considered the king of country music.
He couldn't get Tammy Waynette out of his mind. He loved her so much. But after the divorce they remained friends. ❤
YOU GOT IT!!! BRITT, YOU GOT IT WHERE SO MANY HAVE MISSED THE WHOLE POINT OF THE SONG.... Good for you... BCNU...
The best blues & country songs are sad as hell and tell a vivid story.
This is one of the best.
Britt, this is quite possibly the greatest country song ever written. Not just my opinion, it's generally acknowledged.
Song was released in 1980. "Preying on his mind," in this sense, means he can't stop thinking about her.
Girl, this is the greatest country Song ever.😊
George Jones was a story teller!
Thank You for being the first reactor I've seen who got it. The key is the first line"He said he'd love her til he died".
And they should get it when they place a wreath upon his door but people don't really do that anymore...y'all they used to put a black wreath on the door to let people know...
Incredible love song
I love the sincere shock on your face when you catch the meaning of these country songs
I live ur dimples and the opossum will always be one of my favorite country music singers
I saw George Jones in concert several years before he passed. As soon as the first rift on the guitar played this song, the whole stadium was on its feet! Certainly one of his best. Other good ones by Jones are Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes and The Grand Tour.
You'll never hear anything any better than the great George Jones.
This is considered to be the greatest country song of all time. And George is arguably the greatest country singer. When he first heard the song he said " I'll sing it. I love the song. But, it will never sell. It's just to damn sad."
Mama take me home by George Jones
It’s been considered the greatest country song ever.
I feel like whiskey lullaby is the modern he stopped loving her today. But George is the blueprint for this tragic love loss.
If I remember right, this song was the #1 Country song of both 1980 & 1981. It must have been released at just the right time to straddle the two years.
@@sparky6086 In April 1980, It was just that good.
Widely considered the greatest country song of all time. Excellent choice for reaction.
This is considered to be the greatest country song by many of all time
One of the best and saddest songs ever written and performed. 😢❤ Yes, the 70’s clothes and whole vibes were awesome!! 😊
lol I still come back to this one almost a year later,, you crack me up the first time you heard this song,,, right when it dawned on you the mfer was dead,,,, lmao... Instant Classic,,, Brit,,, you're alright... lol
I loved your reactions to this song. That is the way everyone feels that listens to the song.
This story is so Heartbreaking and well sung.
Now this is a comment that everyone should aspire to post once in a lifetime! Well done Sir!!
@@djmattese I totally agree 😊
@@djmatteseI just stumbled across this nearly a year later, but thank you for saying so. I just read through that long diatribe and yeah man I was really feeling it I guess. I still agree with all of those things.
Best country Sling ever written. Love your reation, you get it.
You nailed it!!!!! You dont know how many reactors totally miss the meaning...im going to be honest, I was a little nervous for you to do this one, but you knocked it out of the park!!!! Great reaction!!!!
Perfect reaction - what George would have wanted.
Saddest song ever written.
The thing about the "Side Burns" - everybody tried to emulate Elvis - but ONLY Elvis could rock the sideburns... Hardly anyone comments on Elvis's sideburns - but I THINK you are getting it... This was George Jones's best song - in my opinion... Love this song.
This song has been voted the best country song in history multiple times. Even though George didn't want to record it. Said it was too morbid.
ha ha,in the begining George said it was the dumbest son ever before he finally recorded then change his tune after it was released !! if you UA-cam it type in the name and add "studio version
He has said in interviews that he did t want to record it because it didn't go anywhere. It was brought to him multiple times but it didn't feel complete. He did initially think it was morbid.
When it was brought to him with the spoken word verse, that changed his mind. He said the song felt complete and he liked it.
George Jones was one of the best of his genre and this is, arguably, the best song he ever sang.
