Seger was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2012. From the 1960s to the 1990s, he had 31 songs on the 100 Top Hits chart. He captured the youthful pursuit of meaning on the road. Enjoy

The fact that this was a LIVE performance, and yet sounds more like it was a studio recording, just goes to prove how talented and amazing Bob Seger was as a singer, and a performer. Not to mention how good the Silver Bullet Band were when they were doing a show.

He is talking about being on the road as a musician. Bob Seger spent decades on the road performing. This is speaking from his soul.
I was fortunate enough to see him many times including Detroit shows which were dang hard to get tickets for. In 2019 he did his last tour and I saw him in Shreveport Louisiana. Whole stadium goes pitch black and that sax riff at the beginning rings out over the crowd in the dark. CHILLS

Somewhere on the album "Live Bullet" there is a 15 year old fan standing 3 rows back from the stage cheering his lungs out. Me, on September 5th, 1975 Cobo Hall in Detroit.
Yes, they said that because of his long hair. Viet Nam hadn't been over long and "hippies" weren't looked upon favorably.

Absolutely! I grew up with my parents blaring classic rock like this, and folks today are giving me perspective on how amazing those artists were and yet it was just "normal" to me.
The Eagles, Foreigner, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Bob Seger, Led Zeppelin, Tom Petty ... too many to mention but many are becoming lost gold, IMO. Lots of awesome country disappearing as well. Bob Seger though... holy smokes, many many crazy good songs! That band is a showing of true talent.

I lived in Detroit (Ann Arbor actually) for 10 years and got to see Bob Seger in concert around 1982 or 83. Start to finish great songs. In fact, I can't think of any of his songs that weren't great. He's the ultimate singer/songwriter, genuine, authentic, and lacking the celebrity BS that surrounds most rock singers today. His songs tell a story and it's always an interesting one. When I moved to LA I was disappointed that they didn't play his songs nearly as much as I was used to hearing in Detroit. But thanks to UA-cam you can find most of them and a new generation can enjoy them. So many great songs, but try listening to Roll Me Away or Hollywood Nights to get an idea of his range as a song writer.

Each person can see some of their life in this song. I see so much of my life when I was in the Navy and people would sometimes judge us thinking we were just women trying to be men. Even the "amplifiers ringing in your head - " I was in ship and shore communications and spent a lot of mornings trying to get to sleep after a long night shift (including a different sort of amplifier) but I can't get the buzz and clatter of a complex work center out of my head.

I see you smile at every point where the beat comes in with a slow "chugga chugga" vib and I remember that you said you felt a western vib early in your video. I feel those sections of the song as a train chugging along, mainly because of the line where he sings "the engine's one note song", as in, the horn a train engine will sound as it approaches a crossroad, early in the song, but I could easily experience that as a horse galloping across the plains, as well. (the locomotive was called the "iron horse" at one time for some reason!)

Your review of this song was great! This was the music of my youth and I don't expect you to have the same connection to it that a teenager from that time would have, but your analysis is very insightful. Sonically, Bob Segar's voice and the band's performance was quite soulful and hypnotic. But more importantly, his ability to portray what it was like to live a life on the road as a "celebrity/character" was a revelation to myself and many of my friends, at the time. This song was not important because it provided deep thought provoking insights, but rather, that it shoved the reality and loneliness of being a rock star in all of our faces.

Strung out from the road. I never thought about it being a play on words, I know the feeling after driving for days on end, but good point.

"Wanted Dead or Alive" - Bon Jovi's take on the same thing. Not sure if she is even old enough for this, but she might know "Like a Rock" from the chevy commercials. Of course, Seger has a a bunch of GREAT songs.

When I first heard this song as a child, I had the same thought that it was a truck driver, but I slowly released more as I listen to it, it was more about his personal experiences as a rock star & what the constant state of touring can do to you. Like the line "the same old cliches, is it a woman or a man" was something him and his band members experienced in a small-town diner back when they had long hair and would get remarks about it.
Course, back then in the time he was actively touring and when this song came out, long hair was less acceptable on men.

Blue's rock. It is old time rock and roll, and yes, that is the name of another of his songs.

I'm also from Detroit, so I remember when he was still playing small local bars and venues. In the '60s, if you had long hair (as a man) people would often make snide remarks (such as is that a woman or a man) knowing full well he was a man. Needless to say, as his notoriety and success grew, those comments stopped. He's always been one of my favorites. The best times for me, were at the beginning when he played the local bar circuit. As always, you did a phenomenal job at catching the nuances of the artist and the times. Thanks again for your review and for taking me back to my teens and twenties. (Yes, a looooooooong time ago. Bobby is only a few years older than me)

Bob Seger is from Detroit. He has had a 50 year career which is now over as he has retired. Peter Frampton sold out Cobo Hall arena 7 nights running Bob Seger sold it out 8 nights and it could have been 14 days A rabbit hole so deep you may never get through it.

One of the best. When he was coming up he spent a lot time across the border from Detroit in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Like many of the Motown Stars and musicians all over he got a lot of airplay on CKLW in Windsor as well as advice ftom a lady by the name of Rosalie Tremblay know as the girl with the golden ear. He has a song, Rosalie written about her that was later covered by Thin Lizzy. My father worked at CKLW back then, I was just a little kid at the time.
Other songs to check out from Bob Seger (pronounced Seeger) would be The Famous Final Scene, Sunburst is one no one reacts to as well as Rosalie among many, many others.
Also check out some of his early stuff such as Heavy Music (Bob Seger & The Last Herd) , 2+2, Ramblin', Gamblin' Man and Beautiful Loser.

Yes, a lot of rock stars in the 70's and 80's had long hair. And strung out from the road means just touring life. Doing one night stands playing in a different city all the time, etc... It has to wear on you.
