I can’t believe how many people miss the meaning of this song. This isn’t about a husband and wife. It’s about a man who loved a woman who left him that he couldn’t get over. He kept old love letters, kept thinking she’d come back someday she never did and he stopped, loving her the day he died. It’s right in the lyrics.
He said, "I'll love you till I die"
She told him, "You'll forget in time"
He kept her picture on his wall
Went half crazy now and then
But he still loved her through it all
    Hoping she'd come back again.
His friends weren’t even sure if she would show up to the funeral
You know, she came to see him one last time (ooh)
Ah, and we all wondered if she would (ooh)
And it kept runnin' through my mind (ooh)
"This time he's over her for good"

This kind of story telling is emblematic of the best of country music. Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, George Jones, Tom T. @@setonhillstudios The Statler Brothers are my personal favorites. "We Got Paid by Cash" is their tribute song to Johnny Cash who gave them their break into music. He greatly influenced their songwriting and musical style though they did develope their own style that no one else in country music had or sounded like. They toured with him for over 8 years before they went out on their own. They stayed loyal friends to Johnny and his wife, and he to them. I think you would like that song. They remain to this day, some 20 years after retiring, the most awarded act in the history of Country Music and are known as The Entertainers on and off the Record. They had tv specials, a tv show for 7 years, and 40 years of albums and tours after leaving Johnny. They were funny, highly entertaining, and put on great shows! They did funny songs, songs with clever turns of phrase, heartbreak songs, gospel songs, patriotic songs and more. With the exception of about 3 songs from the years they recorded albums under Johnny's label they never did the bar songs or drinking songs which is what makes me love them more than most country singers. Much of their music is nostalgic and that's always a great place to be. I hope you'll check them out. They are legends!

He was married at one time to fellow country music singer Tammy Wynette & they had some great duets together. He had so many hits such as "White Lightnin'", "She Thinks I Still Care", "We Must Have Been Out Of Our Minds", "Love Bug", "Things Have Gone to Pieces", "The Race Is On", "My Favorite Lies", "I'll Share My World With You", "Take Me", "A Good Year For The Roses," "If My Heart Had Windows" & many others.

Producer Billy Sherrill introduced Jones to the song in 1978 but, according to Sherrill and Jones himself, the singer hated the song when he first heard it. In Bob Allen's biography of the singer, Sherrill states, "He thought it was too long, too sad, too depressing and that nobody would ever play it. He hated the melody and wouldn't learn it." It has been named in several surveys as the greatest country song of all time.

Old “Possum” was the absolute GOAT of Country music. There never was one like him and there will never be again. He was the Country singer’s Country singer. Every male Country singer wanted to sound like him. His voice sounds like fresh-poured whiskey, so warm, smooth and kind of smoky. Just glorious. He was nicknamed “Possum” way back in the day when he wore a crew cut. With the crew cut, the long, straight nose and close-set eyes, he did look very much like an opossum. LOL! He loved the nickname and kept it.

In the really olden days, the coffin would be in the living room of the deceased's home.

You got it! The friend died, so he finally stopped loving the woman. Now you need to listen to Randy Travis’ beautiful “ Three Wooden Crosses” and see if you can get it. Most people think too hard and over-analyze, but I think you’ll catch on. The lyrics and paying attention are everything in a Country song.

George was super popular in the 60s and 70s. His solo career and his duets with is wife/ex-wife Tammy Wynette were epic! Unfortunately he had a drinking problem and he was pretty much washed up until he was talked into recording this song....he hated it. But it revived his career. During his drinking years he earned the nickname "No Show Jones" because of being late, not showing up at all or having to cut shows short. Regardless of his struggles, he is a legend and deserves the accolades that older and newer generations are giving him.

Hey man, I'm late catching this reaction from you. This is a really great song by Mr. Jones, one of his biggest hits in a stellar Country music career. A song that he didn't even want to record, he had to be talked into doing it, he said that he didn't even know how to sing the song and had to basically be coached daily, by his producer, as how to perform it in the studio , as you can see, it all worked out well as this is often described as Country's greatest song ever. You should delve a bit more into classic Country music from the 1960s to the 1980s, there's some really great music from those years.

I'm not a big country fan (I kind of am now but wasn't when I was younger) but pre-80s country is a lot different from post-80s country. I'm a 70s kid and grew up in an R&B environment but was exposed to some country on the radio or on TV occasionally. From my ears, pre-80s country seems to have more "soul" in it. This song has a lot of soul in it and I remember country singers like Willie Nelson, Glen Campbell, Donna Fargo, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Merle Haggard, and a lot of others whose music had a lot of soul. I've become kind of a fan of old-school country as I got older because of the soul in it. Country does have gospel and blues roots as part of its base but post-80s it kind of lost some of that for the most part though there were exceptions. There are some current artists who seem to be influenced by the old school country vibe like Chris Stapleton, whose music I really like, and their stratospheric popularity shows how that sound can still hit deep with younger people today.
