Remembering driving home from an all-night high school graduation party back in June 1980 in Los Angeles, the song came on the radio along with the sunrise, I would never forget it. We went to Denny's and had breakfast, just like the title of the album..."Breakfast in America."
Guys, its about one night stands. Nothing more, nothing less. Feel no sorrow, feel no shame. It's the life I've chosen, everyday. He wakes up in a new town and has to say goodbye to women all over again wondering if they will ever meet again.
Supertramp is an intelligent band that incorporated a lot of traditional rock, pop rock, and art rock into their music. I always just labeled them as an art rock band along with another intelligent band called 10cc. It is well worth exploring their deeper cuts (both Supertramp & 10cc).
I love how halfway through Lex is like "its so heartwarming" when the songs about a guy saying goodbye to all his one-night stands lol. Anyways the production and arrangement on this song is great.
@@Layjus123 I think they probably intentionally wrote in the double meaning there. The lyrics make sense either way. But regardless of which way you go with it, I still think its funny describing the song as heartwarming lol

When I was 13 years old here in Toronto, I went to the fair (CNE) and in one of those sideshow games where you win small, usually worthless prizes, I won my very first prize ever, a Supertramp Breakfast In America record lol. I had no idea who these guys were and pondered throwing it out somewhere so I can enjoy the rest of the evening at the fair but, thankfully, I held on to that thing for the rest of the night and the very next day when I finally put it on my parents ancient, cheesy, disco ball turntable, I was mesmerized at the beautiful sounds coming out of that thing. I think I listened to that record so many times, it turned white. One of the all time best rock albums, I'd rate it up there with Pink Floyd's Dark Side, Fleetwood Mac's Rumours etc.. fantastic band.

Right, it perfectly conveys his cavalier ways. It's essentially about a guy who loves women in general too much to stick with any one of them. I mean, what other takeaway can you have with lines like, "Just the thought of those sweet ladies sends a shiver though my veins?" ;)
I was in 8th grade when "Breakfast in America" was released. My English teacher brought in song lyrics for songs as a way to help teach poetry to kids in a way that was relatable. At the time, all the kids thought here we go again, an adult trying to be cool. BUT, one day see came in with lyrics from this album. He told us his 17 year-old son recently purchased the album and after hearing the lyrics, he and his son had a deep conversation about many topics that concern parents and children, like drug use, heartache, etc. So he brought the lyrics into class. I remember discussing Child of Vision in particular, as a class exercise interpreting the meaning behind the lyrics. Just like you guys are doing in this reaction. I bought the album the next day. Yes, my 8th grade English teacher introduced me to Supertramp, and, consequently, Mary Jane too.

Supertramp often uses contrasts in the way that their lyrics and music fit together. The album, Breakfast in America, which this song is from, is loaded with them. To me this song has a light hearted feel and speaks about a guy enjoying the rock star lifestyle. The guitar solo at the end has an emotional feel to me and provides the counterpoint.

Yes, Mary Jane was used back in the 70's as slang for Pot. The song is about hooking up with groupies for one night stands before he moves on to the next concert. Or maybe also about pot. could be both, but definitely the groupies.

This is my favorite Supertramp song! I was so stoked to see this reaction pop up!! I was 15 when this came out, 1979, and I bought the album. Great memories! I didn't know for many years that this song is about "One night stands"!
Keep going with Supertramp. CANNONBALL, DREAMER, HIDE IN YOUR SHELL, & IT'S RAINING AGAIN. They always bring the best musical temperament to each song. Nothing like exploring territory with artists that care.
My fave Supertramp song for the outro alone! Definitely cruise with the windows down to this one! 💗 Brad, I think there are 2 Supertramp songs you might like: 1) Take the Long Way Home (a MUST for both of you) - it really has a dual meaning, and it has harmonica that I think Lex would love! 2) The Logical Song - it has lyrics to create introspection and has depth, and I know Brad's all about breaking down those lyrics! 😁
Man, I still have this CD from back in the day, although I never bought the album when it came out, but this was like a jump over "In The Quietest of Moments" album that I had on tape. The whole album is outstanding. Side note: Back in the day when Jon Anderson left YES, the lead singer of Supertramp was approached, and he said no. (Like the story of AC/DC approaching the singer of Krokus after Bon Scott died, and he said no)
Does this man ever show emotion?. You go girl

This is a super special song for me, this is the same sweet and free-shame attitude that I love to have with girls, if we spent a beautiful time together but the feelings are passed away don't feel ashamed, see you tomorrow or whenever, friends like strangers that I knew before, have a good life and we'll meet again, maybe today! Jane. Mary for me are just girls name, this is what I feel for this incredible song! Thanks for sharing this reaction guys!
Literally the cutest thing you thought the song was about an actual platonic encounter with a stranger lol. Awesome reaction
For the record, it's about one nighters lol
This is my favorite Supertramp song! I was so stoked to see this reaction pop up!!
I was 15 when this came out, 1979, and I bought the album. Great memories! I didn't know for many years that this song is about "One night stands"!
It’s funny how you question the genre of Supertramp! They’re DEF a rock band! Saw them live back in the 80’s! I was DEF a rocker chick! 🤘🏼
My damn theme song! I never look behind me my troubles will be few!
Keep going with Supertramp.
CANNONBALL,
DREAMER,
HIDE IN YOUR SHELL,
& IT'S RAINING AGAIN.
They always bring the best musical temperament to each song. Nothing like exploring territory with artists that care.
Supertramp were awesome! I still love Roger.
My fave Supertramp song for the outro alone! Definitely cruise with the windows down to this one! 💗 Brad, I think there are 2 Supertramp songs you might like:
1) Take the Long Way Home (a MUST for both of you) - it really has a dual meaning, and it has harmonica that I think Lex would love!
(Like the story of AC/DC approaching the singer of Krokus after Bon Scott died, and he said no)
Supertramp hangs with the very best. There is a concert out there with a full orchestra!
