These guys pounded out 10 solid years of creative, unique, well composed songs at a high level of musicianship. I know you have done 4 or 5 Supertramp songs so far, but there are a lot more from this band. They won't let you down.
You've loved every song of theirs you've done. Considering that, please consider doing 'School,' and 'Rudy.' Many of us feel they are blues-jazz, prog rock masterpieces.
You know, Supertramp was a prog band, as well as jazz and rock, but this one is pure jazz to me. I'm surprised that she picked up on prog through this one.
Also - Hide In Your Shell - off of the same album. Crime Of The Century is so worth the trip. Much heavier than the Breakfast In America pop-oriented stuff
The Breakfast In America album is probably their best known work because Logical Song and Breakfast In America were huge singles at the time and along with It's Raining Again and Goodbye Stranger still get a lot of radio play.
This is how you do an intro...Supertramp often mixes jazz and prog, this is a prime example(some call Supertramp "prog pop") the live version from the " Paris " album adds some jazz-type singing on the outro, mixed with the sax riffs, worth a listen
Over the 45ish years of listening to this Crime of the Century album, my favourite song on the album has changed multiple times. Currently it’s Hide in Your Shell.
For me, one of the best intros ever with those keys and that wah wah. Definitely a 'good progressive' track about the British class system in the seventies. Bangin sax solo, as well. You guys may want to check out School from the same Crime of the Century LP, which is also a prime example of some of the most tasteful progressive you'll ever hear. ✌
Certainly an era that peaked in musicianship - the intro here, Boston's 'Foreplay', amazing stuff! Sure wish we could have some of that back in the mainstream again. The musicans are there, but the labels aren't. The last 'new' band I heard that truly made an impression with their song writing & musicianship was Hurt, from around the 2010s, known for their single 'Rapture'(albeit, you realize that the radio edit is a total butcher when you hear the album cut; their first major album 'Vol 1' is incredible BTW). They were around for a decent amount of time, but, while they were on a major label, this was after the big money dried up and they never got a strong push. At least the talent is out there independently today though, we do have that going for us!
Ah Yaaaas!! Supertramp! Bloody well right!! What an amazing group with so many terrific songs! Ya just can't go wrong! They are just as 'fresh' today as when gheir music first came out! you never know 'What!' To expect from them.. other than Excellence! Please spend some time taking a deep dive and listening to each/ every album individually, you won't regret it!❣️😁👍
I feel jealous... Brad & Lex get to hear all this great stuff for the first time. And there's so much more great stuff they've got ahead of them. Give 'Dreamer' a listen...
Good observation Brad, that it’s a jazz-rock hybrid, the electric piano and sax reinforce the jazz vibe, while the guitar, bass and drums keep the rock feel. And yes, it’s about speaking their minds about the British school system they grew up with. 👍
Have been with my wife on one of their good by concerts in germany, Karlsruhe Schwarzwaldhalle, i never saw a band that changed so often instruments, also while a song, all great musicians. Fun fact everywhere it smelled sweet and my wife didn´t recognize, that all around her smoked weed. I smile till today when i remember this 30 years after. thx for reaction.
I think this song is best understood within the context of the whole album. It's a snapshot of a moment that fits within the bigger picture perfectly. Maybe one of the best albums of all time.
After hearing that tune a gazillion times since it first came out, I'd have thought I'd be sick of it by now. But I still crank it up every time I hear it. Love y'all's reaction! 👍👍👋
Hugely underrated band. Great songs, brilliant arrangements. The Crime of the Century album really needs to be hit in one listen though. The song's basically about "it's who you know, not what you know", and flows on from the song "School", which is about how school doesn't really prepare you for life and just leaves a lot of people more confused. Great prog/pop/jazz/rock.
I meant underrated in terms of today's audience, although they are making a critical comeback. Say "bands of the 70s" to people, and Supertramp won't be near the top of most people's lists. And no matter how highly you rate them, it still isn't high enough :)
you listen to my past ^^ I used to be a DJ in a youth center in Germany in the 70s and these things were happening every day. supertramp one of my favorite bands
So glad you finally got to this band. I'm on the road and looking forward to watching when I get home. I wish you could do the whole album. If Everyone Was Listening and Asylum are great closures
Easily my favorite from the classic "Crime Of The Century" album. Or maybe it's "School", "Asylum" or "Hide In Your Shell". Or anything else on the album. Their best, IMO.
Wife here..I swear last night my Husband and I were discussing how very very popular this band really was and is..!!!...You are "guranteed" to hear them 4 to 5 times on classic/soft rock stations until this day!!.."Milk the distortion"..Love it!!
I have been fortunate enough to have seen Supertramp “The Tramp” Live 4 times. Their live shows are a spectacle and brilliant. Each member is a musical genius. Rick Davies is my favorite keyboards player and John Helliwell is favorite Sax player. He is a blast to watch live. The bass and drummer are awesome and Roger’s guitars are superb. The only live show I put above Supertramp is Pink Floyd, who I have seen 4 times.
Seriously underrated band! I went to their last concert... drove from Boston to Philly to see it...and it was amazing!... Roger Hudson is a genius! I consider him on the same level as Tom Scholz from Boston. Give A Little Bit next!! ... great content guys!
Ironic but I learned in 8th grade to love Supertramp in 1975 from my buddies sister's boyfriend in Grand Forks and he was from the Peg with his star jeans even.
This album was the soundtrack of my junior high and senior high years (for all the young 'uns out there, junior high=middle school 🤣). So good played loud and with a little herbal enhancement. 45 years later, I still love it. 😎
I know when they came out it was hard to call them prog, it was hard to put your finger on their sound. But they were hugely popular amongst prog fans and straight-ahead rock fans alike. I think the definition of prog would definitely include Supertramp.
They filled the gap between Pop & Prog. I've seen them described as Art-Pop & Prog-Pop. They always were a difficult band to categorize, as they had the songwriting skills of pop masters, while also having the musicianship of prog monsters, and they weren't afraid to display both skillsets in the same song...
