I’ve returned to this song recently and it perfectly parallels the protests right now at universities- you start young and want to learn, you start learning, then you learn too much but keep human values which make you dangerous and difficult to control… “radical, liberal… criminal.” A song released 45 years ago still very relevant.
The song is basically, as a kid you just accept life. It’s magical, joyful, in tune with the birds and nature. Then society “teaches” you how to part of the chaos. Pushing away your innocence.
To me the song is about, Who am I underneath all this garbage society has put on top me? Who am I REALLY? Who would I be if I had been left alone, and continued to grow as an adult from the place of the little boy with the trees and one with nature, who would I be right now?
Without a society a human wouldnt be much more than an animal. There surely is a lot "garbage" in society... but also a lot wonderful stuff. For example... arts like this music ;)
@@BoothTheGrey Well ,we are social "animals" and have been for over 200K years. However, Gregory's take is still valid: what would be without undue influence of an overbearing, stifling, over-populated and cold world? You can be an artist without people telling you how to live and how to think. However, all of those people can't make you have talent.
Very well said. I have been asking the same question more & more lately. Who am I really? Very deep question that I will continue to try to find an answer to.
@@paulf4802 If you dont like the word "animal" as showing difference... I give some examples, what you would have NOT without society:
No language. No arts. No entertainment from external sources. No roots. No goals. And no training on whatever. So no understanding in whatever. How could anybody find out about his artist talent when there is no art?
For me this is also very, very "cold" (well... not "cold" but just something I wouldnt wish at all for me).
I do understand the critique of our modern world in which especially our economic system leads to many inhuman problems but also still a lot religious and/or political fundamentalism.
Interestingly some artists think most problems are linked to technology. Or that we in industrialized countries would have any problem with "overpopulation" (although here in Germany we have really many people per square meter... no... overpopulation isnt an issue at all here).
I really like also very critical arts about our world. But sometimes... I see it go a bit wrong. Maybe Roger Hodgson was really a "simple man". Maybe it was just poetry and everybody can put into the words whatever he wants to. Maybe I dont understand him and you.
For me its very easy: Without society (and already just a familiy or a little clan is a society)... there is nothing your brain can learn from on such an intense level - not even close. Again: No language, (almost) no learning, (almost) no training, no understanding.
And maybe its all my "problem" with your statements... cause... I really like to try to understand the world I live in :)
@@BoothTheGrey I don't there is anything wrong with your take on the world or that you have a "problem." Indeed, without other humans, we couldn't achieve as much without social learning or cues. Art without humans to appreciate it would not be art. We are social beings and evolved that way. We will evolve as human beings as the world changes, for better or for worse. It would be cold and lonely without other humans with which to socialize; however, a person can feel lonely in a crowded auditorium.
“Goodbye Stranger” and “Take the long way home” next please- 💖💙👍
Great choices!!
I'd throw in Bloody Well Right, Lord Is It Mine and Dreamer (live in Paris).
Agreed
School, and Give a little bit, as well!
Kimberlini Bambini speaks TRUTH!
One of the greatest songs of all time ‼️💯🔥
Supertramp's Breakfast In America album is one of the all time great listens. Pretty much every song is a classic and you can just sit back without the need to skip a song. Perfection with songs like Goodbye Stranger, Breakfast in America, Take The Long Way Home etc..
One of the first albums I ever bought and still a fave!
Somehow I would not like
Curry and Kippers for
Breakfast
Right up there with Dark Side of the Moon
I would take Crime of the Century.
Supertramp is like Pink Floyd. Very talented musically and very deep lyrically but with their own unique sound.
i pefere pink floyd way more but yeah there good with their lyrics
Pink Floyd is my favourite. But man.. it’s hard for me not to put supertramp top 10 easy.
I grew up listening to Supertramp. And i love Pink Floyd i discovered later even though it was at the same period but i was too young to understand their music.
My dad introduced me to both in the mid 70s.
I thought I was the only one , Thank you , middleman
You two kill me - there is Brad, like a rabbit in the headlights, deep in concentration, trying desperately to 'understand' what is flashing before his eyes - while also there is Lex, bopping out, riding the wave, absorbing it all and turning it into groove...
Musically and lyrically about as good as it gets. The meaning of the song questions the education system. Roger Hodgson said: "They teach us how to function on the outside and to be very intellectual, but they don't tell us how to act with our intuition & heart or give us a real plausible explanation on what life's about." So very true and it's why so many people grow up and become sheep.
The problem, and you articulate it perfectly, is that too many people expect too much. Education is primarily the responsibility of parents. The educational system adds book learning, maths, physics, history, parents don't know.
It is the parent's job to teach their children about life.
Sheep help build strong societies.
@@PanglossDr Was just about to attemtpt to write
the very same thought.. well said.
Nice thoughtful words....maybe it is God that tells us to act on our own intuition and heart which could or would make life's meaning worthwhile, free to act and make choices, but accountable for our actions
In the end, he does become a sheep though, right? "One two three five" - going with the flow even though he knows it's wrong
Brad's grooving on the words while Lex is grooving on the music. What a great combo.
ALL of Supertramp is legend and absolutely the greatest!!! Been a dedicated listener since the 70's. Love love & LOVE Supertramp. They are loved by millions+!!!!!!!!
Brad&Lex, you'll love their "Goodbye Stranger", "Give A Little Bit" and "Take The Long Way Home". Roger Hodgson wrote this song at as teen!!! Brad, you are spot on, one of your best reactions!!!
As well as Breakfast in America!
@@adamsgrad93 yes! they recently reacted to that one ua-cam.com/video/__Om4jNpLUk/v-deo.html
Asylum, or the whole Crime of the Century album, in fact you could just throw a dart at any list of Supertramp songs and hit a great song
I totally agree with you, yes Brad is spot on, coming into his own it would seem..
I bet they will hate _Goodbye Stranger_ like the rest of us do! Brad and Lex have good taste. 😎
Lex is the reason you need to be here. Her reaction to music is addictive.
Lex is great but I'm here for Brad :)
I absolutely loved this band back in the 70's and early 80's. Their music still sounds great today.
Lex's reactions are superb....she really got this song .not just intellectually but its soul depth musically
I think they really complement each other. Brad really follows the lyrics, and Lex really pays attention to the music.
I mean they both do both... but they have their strengths.
@@coolworx Yes, exactly, these guys are the best reactors and have such a great temperament; Not that I've seen that many reactors. Each is clearly high IQ, good cognitive skills too, in the flexibility of their thinking, humility of their understanding of themselves and the capability of accepting each other's views, some of the maverick and insightful, without impulsive knee-jerk reactions and they actually build upon each other's thoughts. As a couple, they Complement each other, with Brad's clear raw realism and practical intelligence and Lex's abstract and intuitive, incisive thinking. If thhey stick together, long-term, they will undoubtedly be very successful
school, crime of the century , child of vision and fools overture are one of the best supertrammp songs of all time
Supertramp is a really underrated band. Their song "It's raining again" is also a very nice one, worth listening. :)
Supertramp was called one of the Supergroups in "former" times ... so Supertramp wasn't underrated
@@Wisgurd
Crime of the Century
Supertramp was a hugely successful band. Heh.
Yes That one is awesome! My Favprite!!
They were so good musicians, on stage there were 5 saxophones, several guitars and basses, they changed them several times. The singer played also the piano. Real handmade music
My favorite Supertramp song and one of my top 20 all time for sure. I love this song.
MORE SUPERTRAMP!!!!! The most underrated band in history... "crime of the century" is a top 10 album of all time in my opinion. pure genius! Breakfast in America was loaded with hits.
Start with "school" then "bloody well right" (one of my personal favs). Oh and brad/ the title track "crime of the century" is a great tune to add "questions in the mind"
I second every single word of this!! The entire "Crime of the Century" album is epic!
Love the 3 top Supertramp albums, always adored their music. Crime of the Century came out when I was in middle school - we all blasted that album to death!!!
I heard the Logical Song for the first time when I was in my teens - my darling Dad introduced me to Supertramp. At age 60 I still often 'say' to myself and to the universe "please tell me who I am". Supertramp were ahead of their time lyrically/musically... I still listen to their albums 'Crime of the Century' and 'Breakfast in America' and I'm still a Dreamer.
This is one of those songs I've heard hundreds of times over the years but never paid attention to the lyrics and meaning until fairly recently, it's a very clever song
SAME HERE . . I was like . . "Wait, this lyrics . .what . .woah . . okay . . ."
There is both a Sax and a Clarinet. In terms of lyrics it’s fantastic as well. I figured Brad would relate to those.
I think that solo is on a soprano sax. this instrument has a louder, raspier tone than clarinet. They say the sax as an instrument (not counting synths, vocoders, or other electronic modulated instruments) is the closest analog to a human voice.
The lyrics are so obvious even Brad can understand them.
@@larrybremer4930 clarinet is at the beginning of the song, not in the solo
@@jeffcocco7123 I have the Paris DVD, I am going to have to look for that clarinet at my next watch - ty
"Breakfast in America" was once the biggest album of all time back in the 70s
This was Supertramp's biggest American hit ever!!! The song peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 back in the spring of 1979.
What a joy it was back on a beautiful day in the early eighties to put this record on the turntable and play it for the very first time! What a band!
I remember when this song came out sitting in my mother's Ford Torino turning the volume up,I was just a kid but those were great years.
In this episode of Brad & Lex, the struggle of lyrics and music is apparent but apparently not intruding in on Brad's signature "side to side sway" while Lex "Talladega Nights" it, not knowing what to do with her hands but still gives us her "70,s bop"
That's what I saw
Lyrical, vegetable, lol. Insightful reaction, guys! It describes the lead singer's experience of being sent away to a boarding school for 10 years, when he was young. They're a massively talented band, these guys. Great songwriters, lyricists & top notch musicians. Breakfast in America was a great LP, but my personal fav is Crime of the Century. Bloody Well Right is a bangin track from that one, & was a big single. Cheers!
Great album, I totally agree. The title track, Crime of the Century is probably what you should listen to next from Supertramp.
@@Christographer_UK I second this, it's just epic.
So agree with you Ben. "Crime" is near progressive rock and a masterpiece in my opinion - but you need to listen to it front to back. Breakfast was one of my favorite albums when I was in college. Played it over and over.
I kick my support in for that one too!👍👍👍
Brad was smiling, lol good man about time! Love the reaction and Lex's expression when the sax kicked in.
It looks like he's finally just relaxing and letting the music flow, without being too clinical, intellectual and cynical.
@@matthewhudson5685 a vegetable?
@@SquirminHermanthe1eyedGerman 😂
That sax spoke... directly to her.
This song was HUGE in Toronto at that time. It still stands up, and just wow with that high budget analog production !
Yeah, we Canadians were nuts for Supertramp. Saw them at the Gardens 3 times from about 75 to 79
Summer of 79. Saw them at Exhibition stadium
Its amazing on how this generation really studies the words of the songs. I was born in 1962 so I grew up with this music and we never broke down the songs like this, we just listen to the song a sang along with it. Back in the days you really at times never knew most of the words unless you read them on the back of an album or from the LP sleeve. We never had the option to watch it on youtube, in fact the only time you saw any performance if you caught the band on TV, American Bandstand, Soul Train, Midnight Special with Wolfman Jack or Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. We had no MTV back then. Enjoy our past it was wonderful.
The sax was recorded in a tiled bathroom next to the studio. Worth it's weight in gold.
Whimsical. That was the key to this album. Whimsical embedded within serious content (music and lyrics). It's a masterpiece.
As a young saxophone player John Helliwell was a huge influence on me back then. I practiced for hours to duplicate and then change those solo licks. So sweet. 🎷 👍🇨🇦🤠
Great band from the late 70's, early 80's
I was 13 years old when this was released. So many bands and musicians shaped my whole life outlook to this day
Many more Great Supertramp songs to dive into, you have just scratched the surface. Some of my favorites "Take the Long Way Home", "Bloody Well Right" (more great sax, and some guitar), and "Dreamer" (more Rhodes piano)!
you forgot "Goodbye Stranger"
Not a Rhodes, Wurlitzer electric piano
@@michaelbaucom4019 Just assumed, similar sound.
Watching all the Brad & Lex reactions i have so far, I've come to the conclusion that Lex was born to appreciate REALLY good music.
Part of my Teen years...Great music to grow up on
Such deep lyrics combined with such whimsical sounding music. Someone should remake this song with dark music to match the dark lyrics.
Prog Rock is its own beast.
Watching you 3 years after ... and having heard this over and over since I was 15 years old ... 35 years ago ... I love your reaction.
Apart from that, I've fallen in love with you both: each of you representing a part of me when I listen to music. And for some reason I think I can see/feel that Lex has been to my country (Germany) in the past. But yeah... .I'm a few years older than the couple of you! But I have subscribed because your style seems to suit me!
This si a superb example of the talent that surfaced from the mid 60's into the mid 80's. So many of the bands (like this) relatively little known today. Roxy Music was another of my favourites. Fronted by Bryan Ferry, the smooooooooothest man on the planet. As said by others, Supertramps albums are a treat to the ears.
Love that I grew up back then and all these musical great works happened then...made you think anything was possible.
Love this song
Went to this concert (Breakfast in America tour) in 79 at Cobo Arena in Detroit. Brings back great memories. Not a bad song on the album. You’ll like them all. 👍🏻
There are 4 basic basic types of 🎷's.
Soprano, alto, tenor, and a baritone. The one used in this song is a tenor saxophone.
its an alto bro. there are 4 standard or common types as you suggest. they arent more "basic" than the others ( sopranino, bass, contrabass, c-melody, f-mezzo, contralto, sopranissimo, subcontrabass, etc are all the same "basic" design.)
"Long way home" is an absolute must
A long time favorite Supertramp song is "School". Check it out! That song is a serious ride and a musical experience.
I never thought I would have the thought "Supertramp has bars," and yet here we are.
One of the best piano solos ever is on a song called 'School' and an extended masterpiece is 'Fool's Overture'.
This was one of those albums I played over and over and over again!
This is a good one. There’s a rhythm to the lyrics and poetic style in this song that Brad has picked up on I totally agree with. And Lex is always getting right up to the vibes of the song. Lex has her visceral relationship with each song. Two completely different approaches to music and often like the song for two completely different reasons. In the end what I really like is that you both are open to trying to understand the others response. You are definitely my favourite couple reactors. Opposites to some degree but so respectful of each other’s opinion. I like it. I like it a lot. Nice work.
Lotsa great Supertramp songs: Dreamer, Bloody Well Right, Give a Little Bit, The Logical Song, Breakfast in America, Oh, Darling, Take the Long Way Home, Goodbye, Stranger, It's Raining Again, Child of Vision.
The song is a commentary on the way that society can stifle individuality and creativity, and the importance of maintaining a sense of childlike wonder even as we grow older.
Roger Hodgson and his family live in my town and have been here for years. Super nice, down to earth folks.
Lex, you are the only reactor, out of dozens, who noticed the word "vegetable". Congrats!!!
Supertramp are great - Even In The Quietest Moments, Bloody Well Right, Crime Of The Century.
You know it’s good when you just listen speechless!!!!!💯🫶🏼
"Bloody Well Right" has one of my favorite openings ever.
Have a great day!
My favorite Supertramp is - *_Even in the Quietest Moments_* - It holds a special memory in my heart.
Lyrical masterpiece brilliantly melodied!
Supertramp was famous for their saxophone solos.
SUPERTRAMP "IT'S RAINING AGAIN"
This is still one I play from my vinyl collection. In the 70s/80s I bought an album most every week until I had all my faves: Journey, Styx, Cars, Boston,Foreigner, and yes "Breakfast in America" by Supertramp.
Supertramp is the kind of 1970s band whose albums one listens to, straight through.
Supertramp was sooo much fun. Love them.
Criminal they aren't in the RnRHOF. Nobody else like them, so unique, so fantastically musically talented.
My favorite Supertramp song 👍
"Supertramp" is a rabbit hole, that you MUST go down!!
this song is the jam, the groove on this is frackin great
I love it when you are both into it! Brad is happy with the analysis and Lex gets a full grove. This was great to watch!
The chorus to this song was my son's Senior Quote. Pretty much summed up four years of high school. 😁
Supertrap was huge in the 70s. They did stadium tours and fans were part of the Supertramp Army. This song is one of their best. I suggest listening to "School" or "Sister Moonshine". My favorite is "Oh Darling", for sentamental reasons.
It was a sax, you ned to hear more Supertramp, a very underrated band, full of quality songs.
"take the long way home" is my favorite !!!
This is my song from my first quarter in college. There are 4 of us that always remember each other when we hear this song
Ya All need to Watch the Live Version of this Band . 👌✌️💗💯
Classic 70s love it
Supertramp is a unique super talented band. Always loved their interesting transitions in their songs.
"Bloody Well Right" is a great tune for y'all to check out.
It was a saxophone. Saxophones come in different sizes and produce different tone ranges. The soprano produces the highest pitch while the contrabass makes the deepest tone.
They actually it a live video of this exact studio version and also the same thing with "Goodbye Stranger" This one has co-founder Roger doing the lead vocals
It's basically a song about how the "system" corrupts us all. Our world starts out as magical, beautiful, wholesome when we are young and devolves into something logical and structural, basically turning people from wonder to cynicism. Lyrically a great song and the music perfectly fits the lyrics by getting more an more hectic as the song goes on.
The clarinet sounding sax was an alto saxophone played by John Heliwell.
I remember this song being played all the time at the Roller Rink, when I was a kid.
Roger Hodgson - lead and backing vocals, Wurlitzer electronic piano, electric and 12-string acoustic guitars
Rick Davies - Elka and Oberheim synthesisers, acoustic piano, Hammond organ, Hohner Clavinet with wah-wah, backing vocal
John Helliwell - alto saxophone, siren whistle, backing vocal, intro breathing
Bob Siebenberg - drums, castanets, timbales, cowbell, woodblocks
Dougie Thomson - bass
A CLASSIC!!..LISTEN TO ALL ALBUM!!.
Yes Lex, it was a sax, there are several different types “Soprano” (most commonly shaped like a clarinet), “Alto”, “Tenor”, “Baritone” and “Bass”. Most saxophone solo’s you’ve probably heard are “Tenor” saxophones, “Alto” saxophones are higher pitched which I played in High School (marching, pep, symphony and concert bands), “Soprano” saxes are higher pitched than “Altos”, played “Baritone” in Jazz Band, deeper tone than “Tenor” sax, same goes for vocalists ranges.
Thanks for the info. Which kind was on this song? Are you able to tell?
Mel, you are adorable!
I just love watching your reactions, it’s so fun to watch people listening and loving the music I love and grew up with❤️
You know your parents are proud when you embody all the words that end in ible.
Ah, the 80’s. Supertramp and Cheap Trick. Or was it Supertrick and Cheap Tramp. Never seen in the same place at the same time.
One man singlehandedly rescued the decade. Stevie Ray Vaughan.
That sound at the 4:20 mark came from a hand held electronic football game from mattel in the 1970's. The sound you hear is when you turned the football over.
BIA is such a legendary album.
First band I ever saw in concert, summer of '79. Live they sounded like their albums with rock solid vocals hitting the high notes and all those different saxophones and other wind instruments.
This L. P. was huge when it came out. Many hits on it.
Met Roger at a New Years party on the first of January the winter after Breakfast in America came out in Yountville, CA(middle of Napa Valley) at one of the roadies on the tours Dad's house. He was one of the biggest rock stars in the world at the time and just sat around chilling and playing his guitar and most of the people there had no idea how how great a musician he was.
Anything from the Crime of the Century album is musical gold, you can’t go wrong. It’s cool the way you don’t know all the fancy words but you know what you like.
Supertramp’s music is absolute genius! Just listen to the composition and arrangement, oh and the lyrics! BTW, I think I’ve now found my favorite reaction channel. Brad looks like he’s always studying the material while Lex gets into the music. You play off of each other well. Funny thing, Brad reminded me of people “watching” the radio before TV was invented. But what does that make us, your viewers???😊
Enjoyed Your reaction to SuperTramp Logical Song. I have told my kids I want this played at my funeral. First, this song is from an album of the late 70s (band formed in the 60s,) so Eminen was a baby. The instrument is indeed a Sax. Yes, you have it correct, the character does have insomnia and is laying in bed during the refrain thinking about his life and the deep questions, (I do the same as I have insomnia as well). The song is basically about society molding us from an innocent child, into just another mindless automata and teaching us not to step out of societal normalality. Of course Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies were English, where sending your kids off to school, was big in the day. But even in America, we send the kids off daily to private or public schools, where the kids are expected to stop being innocent and silly kids, and to grow up and become sensible, logical, responsible, practical, intellectual, and cynical. Then we jump out into the adult world, where people are judging us, and we try to conform to life by trying to act respectable, and like everyone else by having no individual feelings or opinions like a vegetable. I relate to all this, being in my mature years, and looking back on my life. I especially relate to, and find the refrain relatable, as I too lay in bed at night, while everyone is a sleep, and think about my life and where it went, and why I was put here. (insomnia sucks!) Anyway, I enjoy your videos and being open to different things.
School and Bloody Well Right are two classic Supertramp songs to check out.👍
