'School' is about how schools expect you to act a certain way, and, if you don't, you'll be cast aside. So if you want to do something your own way, its up to you. "It's always up to you if you wanna be that, wanna see that, wanna see it that way!" -'School'.

For me, it's a Mother watching over her son, being protective and watching him proudly go off to school, where he'd conform to the set standards and ideas of education, without really letting his creativeness shine...as with many kids. A theme they expanded on with the Logical song. Conformity, expected to be someone you're not in order to fit in.

Roger is playing the part of the mother though. The antagonist voice is played by Rick. The last part is a war going on with Roger stomping his way through making the determination that one can continue pointing in the upwards direction if that is their choice.
We need to take full responsibility for what our eyes behold.

I'm 67, and grew up in the San Fernando Valley in CA in the 60's. I've listened to this song MANY times, and have never made the effort to pay attention to the words because for me, music is about the MUSIC, and the lyrics are secondary. What always amazes me is how young these musicians were when they were writing and performing this music. Most of them were in their 20s.

Rick left home I believe at the age of twelve years home to try to catch on with a band. His mother said he would one day watch a drum corp parade by and would go marching following after them never to return as the same after that. The incredible maturity came from Rick. He spoke of a group he once listened to as a youngster - this being his version of Supertramp - and would listen to it over and over never getting enough of it. After his dad died, Rick had to go back home to work in a steel smelter to take care of his family. Rick let out here recently that his first chance to play with a band only need someone that could play the organ which he knew nothing about. So, he would fake it.

We are all so lucky to have not only the music, but the information about the song and the band right at our fingertips. Back in the day, if you heard a song on the radio, but the DJ didn't tell you anything about it, you would have to wait and wait and wait until it was played again and then, maybe, just maybe they might tell you the name of the song, the band, the singer, etc. It could literally take years (and it did) to find out stuff about music back then unless your friends knew or the local music store knew or something like that. Just crazy.

The clarity and richness on the bass is really nice. Very very inventive band. School is my favorite Supertramp song, although Fool's Overture is close. But I think it starts out as if it is a stranger danger song, but by the end it has morphed into the opposite. By the end the message seems to be, don't let them scare you into conformity. The idea is that as a schoolboy everybody is telling you what you should be to be good. But the singer ultimately comes down on the side of not conforming unless you want to. Ultimately you have to decide what is right and what is wrong.

Supertramp had some great concept albums, not just a group of singles made for radio. That was a thing back then and they were among the best at it.

As a junior in High school, I had a brother return from his first year of college for summer break. Knowing he had experienced a year of dorm life, and having bought my first car and 8-track player, I asked him what new music I should buy.
He asked me if I had ever heard of “Supertramp”?
I told him I hadn’t, but ran to the Mall and bought “Crime of the Century”. I have been a lifelong Supertramp fan from that day forward. I’ve seen them “live” 4 times and have never been disappointed. I wore out that 8 track, several cassettes, and I own pristine vinyls as well as CD’s of all of their music. I have never heard a bad song on their 5 most popular albums and at 65,
I hope to continue to listen until I take my last breath.

It's about the Prussian model of schooling, like that used in the US & UK, that institutionalizes kids, turning them into obedient slaves to the State.

(edit) That is to say, look how obedient so many were.
Never question, just roll up that sleeve.

Supertramp were an excellent and complex band, and this is one of their finest.
Also, it seems like Pink Floyd took at least some inspiration from this for "The Wall".

Supertramp I have seen them 3x and I absolutely love their old stuff. Being from Detroit area Ford Auditorium a 3k seating venue would have concerts during the week for bands that were up and coming for $2.00 from 72 to 78. My cousin had listened to their previous album Crisis? What Crisis? and talked us into going. There were 3 bands Supertramp, Reo Speedwagon and some other band. Reo was decent but Supertramp came on played this whole album and some older stuff. We were godsmacked. We all walked out of there wondering how they have not made it already. 2 months later they exploded. They became to myself very pop after Breakfast in America (borderline pop) which is the result of record companies and success.

i was a teen when this song was out, i allways thought it was about being young and growing up when life was changing for young people, and parents and teachers didnt see that we were young adults, not children, and that we needed more than just negative reinforcments about life, we needed to be encouraged to live life, to go out and be part of the world as it changed around us, and be part of the new world, no longer just doing as we are told, but deciding for ourselves what would and wouldent be, the 70's was a sweeping change in the UK for young people, a decade that would never be repeated.

Hi I always felt it was just about society's high expectations of conformance and how that can limit creativity.
Pink Floyd songs were sometimes about that as well

  • @jamesdignanmusic2765

As with a lot of albums from this era, it's better to hear this in the context of the album, which is all about how society's conformities f**k you up. This song leads naturally into "Bloody Well Right", which continues the concepts of it. The whole album is perectly produced and orchestrated too - the way the instruments blend into each other is wonderful.
